[Q] HTML5 mobile sites on IE9 - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have an HD7 from Tmobile and downloaded Mango 7720 last night. Everything seems like its working perfectly but one problem I am having is with IE9 and HTML5 mobile sites. If I navigate to m.bing.com or m.google.com or even mobile youtube I get the old standard mobile sites NOT the html5 mobile versions. Navigating to Bing mobile is especially bad, I cant even see the full menu of bing services. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm just curious to know if anyone else has this issue before I try to reinstall the update.

Anyone? Maybe the sites don't recognize the browser. Not sure what it is but some people claim these sites come up fine on their phones (except for youtube mobile).

Same here. Weird. Maybe they need some time to integrate Mobile IE9 user-agent code?
However 'enhanced' mobile Facebook works well (touch.facebook.com)

Yes, touch facebook works nicely! Hopefully they impliment the user-agent code soon. I guess since Mango is not officially released they havent implemented it yet.

I'm still having this problem with my HTC Titan running Mango 7740. Surely these sites recognise the ie9 useragent now. Though i'm sure that other Mango users aren't still having this issue, i can't work it out!

Don't worry, you're not alone. Google is a major culprit for me. Its almost impossible to get the newer looking mobile site on my phone, instead it looks like the old barebones mobile site. *shudder*

This is not because IE9 does not support HTML5. It is because your website preference is set to mobile or viceversa.
E.g. if you goto google.com with Desktop mode, you will be presented a majorly cut down HTML google version. However, if you visit with Mobile Profile, you will be presented the HTML5 version

Not even the facebook is that good in my opinion, there are some visual artefacts visible.
Same with dropbox.
And it is missing "swiping" functionality. For example, mobile.theverge.com, you have to tap the small dots, instead of just swiping to the next story.

It's not the mobile/desktop setting. I can actually get to the mobile sites (incl. google) but they all look awful. m.facebook.com goes to the oldschool html4 mobile site. touch.facebook.com goes to the html5 mobile site but it's quite broken and not slick. m.google.com has plain text hyperlinks along the top instead of the graphical tabs seen on other mobile OS's.
I guess it's just a trade-off between having a lovely looking OS and Apps, and not having a decent view of mobile web apps.

Windows Mobile Web Browsers

Hi people,
I know of pocket explorer, and the opera release, but is there any other webbrowsers out there that are any good?
What i am looking for is something like the iphones safari. That would be nice
Pocket Explorer
Opera
Deepfish - damn shame this was never continued!
Cheers
Opera have 2 releases, you didn't mention which one you have. Opera Mobile is one of them but its not free, its good for tabbed browsing and downloads but personally i can't get along with it as it runs slow on my handset and often has script errors, plus struggles with desktop pages and uses alot of data. Opera Mini is the other one and i personally think its amazing. You can load up full web pages quickly and easily and it allows you to zoom in and out of the pages so you can view them like you would on your desktop. It uses very low amounts of data so its cheap to use, plus its free to download.
I personally use opera on my handset as it works well with windows, its the best thing so far anyway.
If your thinking of something more along the lines of the safari (iphone) experience, there is nothing at this time that matches it exactly, but there are similar programs you can get hold of that have been around a little while like Picsel Browser. Which can load up full pages (but cost you alot of data), and renders the pages pretty well, plus you can scroll with your finger and zoom in and out of pages without a stylus. I used to use this browser but i'm now totally hooked on Opera Mini.
I'm sure there are some other browsers out there but these two i mentioned are the only 2 i consider worth mentioning.
PS. Deepfish is similar to Opera mini, its optimises pages server side to make them smaller (data wise anyway), but i think opera have stollen the game from microsoft, thus them stopping any more work on the project, from what we can see anyway!
Hope this all helps btw

Personally I don't use opera mini, because it doesn't come for the htc p4350, i can run the generic, but I have to startup java first, then opera, and with every text area (including adress) it opens a new typing window..

That's the same way it works on my wing. However, as I'm browsing from a phone, I really don't have the highest of expectations for my browsing experience, and all things considered, opera mini is the best option I've found thus far.

Look for Picsel browser, it works almost exactly as the iPhone safari, the zoom, the kinetic scrolling, all that stuff. Execpt it's made for only samsung phones so they don't make it availible for everybody. I have aa copy, but i don't think i can post it here. Type it in google, there a lot of them there. That's where i found mine. And by the way Picsel dosent just view web pages, it also views pictures, word, excel, pdf and powerpoint. Goodluck

Ever thought about the FTX browser or Webby?
well..guys i got the file..but havent test it yet..well..atleast not yet..lolz jus typed in Picsel Browser 1.0.5 download..nd got it ;D
I tried Piscel and it was very snazzy, however, it does have some site limitations so it looks like the pay version of opera is the way to go.

Why is Opera mobile so crappy? (Rant)

This is another one of my multi-site threads, allright now lets get started with my claims. I will start with talking about the very first version of opera mobile ive ever used, it was 8.5.x it loaded the PC versions of every site BUT it would often cry low memory and then crash and it would also not display text right (larger than normal even with settings on minimum) and when i would type it would input large spaces in between words and yet we were expected to pay $29.99 for it (were they crazy?).
Now that i am on my HTC touch pro which comes with opera 9.5 preinstalled it runs pretty stable but there are still problems.
-it cries low memory even tho i have plenty of RAM free and then stops loading a webpage.
-regular links dont respond when i click them unless i do it about after 20 times or so
-mobile site redirects (but this is fixed with the UA hacks)
-rendering problems on sites, certain boxes dont pop up (ie. facebook friend request dialogs.),cant respond to messages on myspace.com or compose new ones, this means i cant do a new browse when away from the computer.opera officials and tech bloggers cite that opera mobile has excellent ajax and web standards support tho my experience is quite the opposite.
-when typing the screen does not scroll over as i type.
-CANT even close it or access it from the task manager unless you do some hacking.
-links sometimes dont respond unless i pull out stylus or press on it multiple times.
-CANT render the frames on my schools student websites properly (ie blackboard NOTE: PIE does this perfectly)
-CRASHES when trying to access ppcgeeks.com
I've also tried most of the opera 9.7 betas and its improved all issues I've had with opera 9.5 except:
-mobile site redirects are worse even with the UA hacks
-screen corruption problems when i recieve a text message, email or IM
-tap and hold menus sometimes dont work
-still cant send messages on myspace and other networking sites
now we are at opera 10 the latest beta suffers these problems
-memory hog
-graphics on sites are pixelated
-does not play nice with OzIM
-mobile redirects are solved with UA hacks tho i would like to see them resolved without having to do this.
-STILL cannot send messages on myspace and tagged.com but at least can send friend requests and access notifications on facebook so thats an improvement.
-when typing with the touch screen, the type cursor moves back to the top line which causes me to have to use the hardware keyboard when typing 2 line messages.
WHY cant they get it right? the iris browser does not suffer these problems only thing i dont like about it is theres no text reflow when zooming in IM not giving them any of my $$$ until all these problems are resolved and also if it will have flash support. has anyone found other issues other than those i have reported? and is there a build of opera mobile that does not suffer these issues, if so can i have a link to it?
Sorry to hear you had such bad experience
On mine, Opera Mobile 10 b2 is working great and I´m so happy with it
The new tab selection is just great!
You seem to be having a great many problems, most of which i have not sufferered on any of my devices (diamond, topaz, HD2)
Im currently using opera 10b2 and its working very well.
sometimes i get the "not scrolling as im entering text" problem, and on a rare occasion i have trouble with redirects. but the majority of the time opera performs as i would expect
Maybe you could give more examples of sites you have trouble with and detail the problem. for example you mentioned PPCgeeks crashing but not what the crash was?
I have just visited PPCG and it rendered fine, i clicked a few links and it has all worked as expected prehaps the problems are specific to the version of opera you are running?
It may also be worth reporting your bugs direct to opera, it will allow them to better address shortcomings in their product in the future.

well the crashes on ppcgeeks only occur in 9.5. the rendering problems I have are with ajax for example on the full facebook site I can't comment on status updates or send friend requests because the ajax boxes don't pop up. it works a lot better in version 10 but still not as good as iris or skyfire browser and WOW I just discovered something else. I went to the official opera forums and I couldn't even answer any threads because the reply forms wouldn't appear. the bug report form also didn't appear. that's a shame when a browser doesn't support its own site.
Get the new Netfront. Works fine and highly recommended

Would agree with Orb, using Opera 10 beta 2 and having no issues with it.
Opera 9.7 and 10 both can not render Hotmail right ( when in desktop view ). You can not reply to messages or compose new ones. You just can't type in the message body field. Opera should attend this problem, since it seems like the problem has been out there for a long time.

New to windows mobile Help please

I went from iphone to android to webos to comeback to android.
I use google voice. I use last.fm to scrobble. And pandora.
None of this are on windows mobile marketplace.
I just got the htc hd2 today while i love the hardware and everything. Comparing other mobile os's windows mobile sucks in terms of
app choices.
Can somebody please guide me in the right direction for replacements
or if the programs are available please tell me how to get them?
I also noticed my email inbox looks like it never left the 90's. Html emails are not being displayed and pictures are not loading automatically.

Okay... look here for all the apps we use on our hd2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603880
On Windows Mobile.. you can look for apps outside of the "marketplace".. you download them as a .cab file (on pc or phone) and place them on the sd card if you want... which out the box is unique to windows mobile (doesn't eat up phone memory (but not that we lack it on the new hd2 lol))
Once the .cab file is on your phone/sd card... in the phone you go to file explorer (in the start menu)... click on it and navigate to where you placed the .cab file and run it. You can save the installation to the "device" because there is plenty of memory and tends to run better.
To awnser your questions;
[1] Google voice idk, but im sure google will have a wm app out soon (if not already, im not 'in' google voice so dunno)
[2] Last.fm Googling around a bit i see they (or someone) released a windows mobile app in 2008, but all links to it trow a 404, so check out their mobile forums, specifically this sticky
[3] Pandora, just read this; http://www.pandora.com/on-windowsmobile (Point your mobile phone's browser to www.pandora.com)
[4] Incomplete emails Thats just a setting since most people use gprs/hsdpa, im sure you can change it, either somewhere in the settings or trough a registry edit
Though i just have to say/write this, DONT GET ME WRONG but honestly, you shouldn't try to make this like your iPhone, although Microsoft/HTC are clearly trying to 'collect' some iPhone users, overall the HD2 isn't user friendly enough to be a iPhone (yes i sayd it) That doesn't mean you shouldn't stick with the HD2 though, just forget the iPhone
To put some strength behind my 'user friendly' statement, if your ROM is from before 1.66, the HD2 will have quite some silly bugs, like SMS messages that get stuck in the outbox but only (if your lucky) send 3 weeks later, problems with the camera, not beeing able to read/write large miniSD cards & more.
On the other hand, if your in any way IT related or just in general good with computers, this is currently the best phone on the market (counting HD2 and HD2b as one) it does the latest wireless connection methods, has build-in gps, compass and g-sensor, a 1ghz gpu, a 'gpu' (kinda) and more geeky features, and hey, it can emulate most psx games at full speed (www.fpsece.net)
I'd just strongly suggest you to get a new ROM from the HTC site, assuming you have a device with pre 1.66
I hope the above helped a bit, not trying to make windows mobile even more confusing for you, just trying to tell you that it cant really be compared to iPhone/Android, it can be compared to windows, there are actually millions of apps, nobody ever felt the need for a windows marketplace until iPhone got one and Microsoft had to compete, at which they currently fail hard i agree, the windows marketplace thing is a joke, just use google.

Looking for an App

Dear All,
I'm looking for a proxy software to bypass the filtered sites in my location for Windows Mobile 6.5 (I have HTC HD2).

[Q] IE9 Not Showing Comments on Gawker Sites

I have trawled the interwebs extensively as well as this site, but haven't found anyone else experiencing this:
I have the Samsung Focus S and it's a great phone, but IE9 is a little ropey... When I visit any of the Gawker mobile sites, Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Gawker, etc... I cannot see/read ANY of the comments.
Flip back to my HTC Desire Android phone and I am able to see them. Does anyone know what's going on here? I can't be the only one out there to experience this.
It is really annoying because I use those sites quite a lot... any help would be much appreciated.
You could try switching the phone between the mobile and desktop user-agents (it's under Settings -> Internet Explorer). Desktop mode *should* give you the same experience as on a PC, except for Flash of course.
Yeah, that does in fact work fine. I suppose I'm just keen to have the issue resolved for the mobile site so that I don't have to flick around the whole page to see all the content (if that makes sense?)
So thank you, but I guess I'm still looking for an answer :-|
Changing the "mode" has no impact on the browser itself. The server is sending you code that doesn't include the comments when you use the Mobile user-agent string.
Hey GoodDayToDie,
Thanks for this tip, I'll give it a go and report back.
