[Q] T-Mobile Sensation on AT&T 3G? - HTC Sensation

Hello all,
I've lurked for a while, but finally got around to making an account and posting!
Anyways, I was wondering it it's possible to convert a T-Mobile Sensation to work with AT&T's 850/1900 3G network. Yes, I know they use different bands yada yada, however, many websites list the device has having quad-band UMTS.
So far users that have unlocked and used the T-Mobile Sensation on AT&T have confirmed that it does not work with AT&T 3G.
Considering the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, it is possible that HTC threw in a radio capable of AT&T's 3G bands and had them disabled. This would give them the option to enable those bands if the merger goes through. This would also lend credence to all the spec sheets out there that claim the device is quad-band UMTS.
If the hardware is there then it's simply a matter of using software that enables the 850/1900 bands.
Perhaps one could flash a radio from the Bell Sensation on the T-Mobile Sensation? Radio might not be the right term, but maybe there's a file or files (modem? baseband?) that can be sourced from the Bell Sensation and flashed to the T-Mobile Sensation?
Perhaps there's a service menu like there was for certain versions of the Galaxy S?
Anybody have any ideas or experience with this?

Why not just buy the bell sensation? I'm using it on ATT 3g with no issues.

kindroid hit the nail on the head.
NO you need one with the proper bands.
sell yours on ebay and buy the proper one with the money you got from yours, or even try to trade someone there or in the marketplace here

I know, but cost is an issue as I'm a full time student. I looked into buying a z710a from Canada, but they're really expensive - $700 USD on Negri right now... I can get a T-Mobile Sensation 4G for around $350.

I tried trading over on Hofo, but no one's interested. I'll post in the Marketplace here later tonight.

[Q] Will inspire's 4G work in Europe?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently in the USA for an internship and I'm tempted to buy an Inspire since it's so much cheaper than what it would cost back in the Netherlands. However I've searched a lot now and I can't figure this out.
Will the Inspire work on my network back in the Netherlands? I'm on T-mobile. I'm sure GSM will work and so on, but I would really like to know if 3G and even 4G will work back at home?
So, bottomline, buy or don't buy ?

Yes it will work but, if you want to use it on another gsm network in the Netherlands you will need to unlock it. I suggest you root it using the ace hack kit. I tested this method and I can say my phone is unlocked.
4G on the Inspire is HSDPA+ its just a upgraded 3g network. If your network in the Netherlands supports this you will have the same speeds or faster. Just check the freq for you home network with the inspire tech spec. I suspect it will work since its the same phone as the Desire HD sold in Europe.

Not if T-Mobile is your provider, T-Mobiles 3G/HSPA+ network uses different frequencies than the Inspire operates on. T-Mobile uses 1700/2100 for their 3G/HSPA+. ATT and the Inspire use 850/1900 (which T-Mobile uses for Edge). So with T-Mobile you'll get voice and Edge data, but no 3G/4G

T-Mobile in Europe uses different frequencies than T-Mobile in the US (probably 900MHz or 2100MHz), but regardless, the Inspire won't support them.

Good point. Looks like T-Mobile in the netherlands uses GSM1800 and WCDMA2100 - which won't give you high speed data on the Inspire
The Inspire does not suppprt 3g bands that are commonly used outside of north america, so while the phone will generally work, you can only get 2g (edge) data in Europe/Asia/etc..

[Q] HTC sensation for Canada ?

Any info on when this might released in canada.
I am on ATT and I feel terrible that another great handset is going to T mobile and F**** att is not interested. Carriers in Canada like rogers and telus have the same band for ATT.
( But again no 4G )
So curious to know if canada is getting one.
Just letting you know that Telus AND Bell use a 4G network (HSPA+)
The DHD actually came out on what was considered a 3G+ network, with DL speeds up to 14 Mb/s, which is really the American 4G standard. With Telus' LTE coming in soon, you can expect DL speeds up to 75 Mb/s... So yeah, canadians don't really lag behind in that aspect!
As for the phone coming out here, Bell and Telus are big fans of HTC, and Bell even launched the Incredible S! So I'd say the chances are pretty good for it to come out here... Only thing is that if it comes to Telus, it might take a few months, as they tend to take their time with phone launches, and Rogers is just a Sony fan...
is Telus received the HTC Deasire HD and the first Desire look to see the Sensation on Telus as well but Telus has issues with taking to long to release phones but dont be suprised to see the phone with bell as well since the Atrix was a hit and miss

I dint mean to say that US was ahead in terms of 4G. I thought the band for 4G was different between the networks. However its really good to know they are the same. Will be jumping to get hold of sensation when its released in canada.
Now have to find out someone to ship me one

Rogers uses the same type of HSPA+ network as well.. I really wish they wouldn't call it 4g though.
Having been on both sides , I miss the net speeds in Canada.

Is this phone going to work properly on rogers?
I've read that on rogers its only going to get 2G speeds...
I've been waiting for rogers to get a good phone for almost a year now, I'm going to leave if they don't get any good phones soon.
Rogers, Bell and Telus use 1900MHz for 3G.
The Sensation uses 1700MHz.
If you want a carrier that's compatible with the Sensation, you need Mobilicity (ME!) or Wind.
I think htc will release one with a compatible band

The G2 was released with T-Mobile bands, then later released with support for 1900 as the Desire Z. I'm returning my Nexus S and am going to stick with the Nexus One for the time being - I really hope this model makes it to Telus. There's nothing about it that I'd change other than maybe a bigger battery. Sense is tolerable.

Actually,
Rogers, Telus and Bell use 850/1900 for 3G, and many phones with just the 850 UMTS frequency work on these networks (i.e. The Australian HTC HD2)

The sensation only uses 1700 in the US for T-Mobile. But who cares about 1700? No one ****ing uses that band. 2100 is what's used worldwide, and that's the sensation the world will get. What we're wondering is when a 850/1900 Sensation will hit.
As an AT&T customer, I'm not even counting on AT&T to get it, nor do I care if they get the phone. I don't want to be thrown on their smartphone data plan anyway. I like importing phones and slapping a SIM in so I can keep going on the $15/plan
Anyway, so if Canada carries the Sensation, that means it will come in 850/1900 flavors.

If you use a non carrier smartphone you can get away with it. AT&T's not gonna make a huge list of all the smartphones in the world and blacklist them from the $15 plan.
They did it for the N1 but taht's because it was sold in the US targetted @ AT&T customers with the 850/1900 bands.
They can only really control the phones they sell to make sure that if you want data with their phones, if it's a smartphone you will be on the $30 plan. Suck it ATT.

Well AT&T is rather nice to you. Up here in Canada, Rogers (AT&T's counterpart in Canada) forces you into a minimum $45 Data Plan if you upgrade from a normal phone to a smartphone. Negotiations never seem to work unless you're extremely lucky, or know someone in the business.
On the topic of the Sensation coming to Canada, I have my doubts on Rogers getting it. They haven't supported many HTC devices in the past, and I doubt they will now. Rogers always carries Samsung and LG, with the occasional Sony Ericsson device.
I'd be willing to put money on Telus and/or Bell getting the Sensation, while Rogers probably taking the Galaxy S II.
If the phone comes out on telus or bell ill still be happy, since telus/bell/rogers all use the same 3G bands now.
Actually in Canada, for BlackBerry you need a minimum of $40 V&D, but for any other smartphone, it's $50... That said, I hear in the US V&D plans can go as high as $100 (here too, but they're the exception, not the norm). Unfortunately though, around these parts most plans don't come with more than 1GB of data.
One of the benefits of our plans though, is that download speeds destroy US speeds. LTE here is 125 Mb/s vs the 14 Mb/s you guys get. For us 14 Mb/s is considered regular HSPA+ (3G+).
As a Bestbuy mobile rep though, I get a fair plan for myself ($35 all incl) for my V&D plan that gives me all the add-ons i need (unlimited txt, Caller ID, VM, early nights) + 200 min and 1 GB data. Pretty good if you ask me
As a Telus customer though, and back on topic, whichever new phone to come out first to Bell or Telus (Sensation or S2), will be the one I buy. I'm hoping both will launch this summer, but I don't really feel like leaving Telus unless I have to...
I am hoping that the sensation gets a GSM release. Being it supports the MAP bluetooth profile, i would like to get a Android phone for my Focus to work with the My ford touch system. There are no android phones in canada that i know of that work with that profile.
When is the glaxy s2 supposed to be released in canada?
ive been with every big phone supplier 4 at least afew weeks and htc is the only 1 im interested in. the galaxy s could be a great phone but they dont give you enough great features. if samsung had its own "friendstream" style social widget, it woyuld compete. but after flahsing sense 3.0 on my desire hd, ill never go back to plain android. every company's UI look sboring in comparision to sense 3.0. only flaw with htc right now is psx4droid doesnt work on the updated sense ui. oncenthat is fixed, this is easily the best brand phone

Question
Will the tmobile sensation work on AT&T's 4G network if AT&T messes with tmobile bandwidth after the takeover?

Except for that pesky wcdma band 2 thing. Is it hardware or software?

No, the t-mobile sensation will not work with at&t 3g or 4g. When the merger does finalize, I beleive the main 3g/4g band that t-mobile is using will be part of at&t LTE band spectrum. All of this will of coarse not take place until my kids are in college thou...

[Q] AT&T Turns off 3G Stunt

So there is millions of AT&T crap network without 3G service across the US. Does anyone feel like I do in the sense that AT&T is doing this as a stunt to the government to show how crappy their network is and why they need to dismantle the beautiful creation TMO created with HSPA+. Its sad the AT&T has to stoop so low to get what they want.

i disagree both AT&T are both GSM the only difference is the frequency they operate on. AT&T will dismantle TMO HSPA+ for their "LTE" rollout. of course raise prices.
AT&T didn't storm Deutsche Telekom's offices with guns to get them to agree to sell T-Mobile U.S. Deutsche Telekom is in a world of financial hurt and needs the $39B to reinvest in what's left once T-Mobile's gone. In fact, they're giving back 1/3 of the $39B to shareholders after closing to compensate for their ****ty financial performance.
T-Mobile U.S. has the lowest yield per pre-paid customer of all four carriers, the highest attrition rate, the highest bad debt write-off, and the lowest margins. That all adds up to less money to invest in new products and services in a highly competitive environment. None of this is sustainable for a public company that answers to shareholders. So if it wasn't AT&T, it would be Sprint or private equity (which means slash and burn). Fat, dumb, and happy wasn't ever really an option.
Let your voice be heard. Go to the FCC website, and post your comment about the merger. fjallfoss dot fcc dot gov/ecfs/hotdocket/list proceeding number 11-65.
@flack0, they have different radios, hence the reason a T-Mobile phone will not run at&TS 3g and an at&t phone won't run tmobiles 3g

Unless you have a G2x with unlocked AT&T frequencies or the other high end phones that Tmobile is coming out with that supports both Tmobile and AT&T 3G frequencies.
Tmobile is pretty confident that the merger is going to go through and is releasing some of their high end phones with dual support
Those rumors about the g2x having both at&t and T-Mobile 3g/4g bands have been long proven to be false...same with the sensation ....to my knowledge there isn't a phone out as of yet that supports both. Please correct me if I'm wrong ...and if you unlock this phone to at&t it will work, but only on edge and wifi

ATT gave half a billion dollars to democrat lawmakers to ensure the deal will go through. It's a done deal. Tmobile is history. All hail new higher prices and crappy service.
I plan on re-signing a new two year agreement at my grandfathered pricing as late as possible to push back the inevitable price hikes.

??? Not that I doubt you, but do you have any solid proof that it will work on ATT 3g? Conformation from ATT, Tmo or LG? Have any of the companies involved guaranteed it will work? All that thread says it should support it. I find the claims that it is locked down and hidden but will magically work later dubious at best.

There are several phones out right now that support 3g on att and tmobile nokia makes atleast 6 phones that are pentaband wcdma 5 bands and the tmobile vibrant will do 3g on att Band I (UMTS 2100, Europe's main 3G band)
Band II (UMTS 1900, US band)
Band IV (UMTS 1700/2100, US band)
Band V (UMTS 850, US band)
Band VIII (UMTS 900, Europe and used e.g. in France and Finland in rural areas)
Well you saying it ISN'T possible isn't warranted either.
The hardware specs specifically say it supports those bands. Tmobile also said it supported those bands. LG said it supported those bands. It passed the FCC with those bands.
Tmobile stated that several of their high end phones will support the AT&T 3G bands and will be unlocked to do so once the merger goes through.
The G2x was the first to support them. The Sensation doesn't. I think the Hercules will as well (although be still be locked until the merger).
Now really, no one REALLY knows one way or another... but looking at the evidence (which are referenced all over the place) it would be best to say that one day we COULD have support for AT&T 3G (unlike the Sensation which doesn't have the hardware).
We do have the hardware but it is locked down. Being it is such a new phone and we don't have any other baselands available, we can't simply flash and be successful. Perhaps the Canadian version will have them all unlocked and we can use theirs.
But to say it isn't possible is not proven just as much as saying it is possible. I would say it IS possible but not right now (AKA it doesn't work out of the box).
i hope you're right sir....that is if the merger happens

The hardware specs are all over the place. It was only AFTER the phone was released that Tmobile said the phone didn't support it and it was restricted by "hardware".
pfft.
The G2x is based off the O2x. Sure slightly different but I would almost bet they used the same "quadband EDGE, and quadband HSPA+ (with future-proof support for 2100, 1900, 1700 / AWS, and 850MHz)" chip.
I bet the G2x and the O2x use the same chip. Tmobile probably just ordered it to be locked down (lack of drivers or something).
It would require a tear down of both the G2x and O2x to be certain.

"all over the place" ... "I bet" ... and "probably" don't really prove anything. You're just speculating, and so far it's based only on your opinion because you haven't provided any sort of links or references to prove your point. The only things I can find regarding the G2X having quad band HSPA+ are when T-Mobile admitted that they were wrong in saying it supported those bands in the first place. On LG's own website they list the G2X as supporting only 2 HSPA+ frequencies (1700/2100). Also on LG's website, they list the O2x as supporting 3 HSPA+ frequencies (900/1900/2100).
It would be awesome if T-Mobile had been correct, but there is nothing I can find that suggests they were. I'm just asking that you pull one or two links from your "all over the place" evidence so that I can have the same faith that you do. I'm not finding it, so I'm asking you to show me. That's all.
Here are the links to LG's product listings for the O2x and the G2X, and the specifications can be viewed by clicking on the specifications tab for each product:

O2x here: http://www.lg.com/uk/mobile-phones/all-lg-phones/LG-android-mobile-phone-P990.jsp
**EDIT** -- Let me just add that I sincerely hope you prove me wrong, because that would be some awesome news about this phone.

There's a ton of posts on the One X forum where people got it working using EDGE for data. Folks on this forum are trying to get the XL working for 3G data on Wind. If they do, it'll work on T-Mobile U.S. also.
The AT&T model does not have the correct bands to work on 3G/4G TMo. All you will get is Edge.

There's a huge conversation going on about what's published and what the radio's capable of. There's a hack for the G-Note that folks are going to try and make work on the One X (assuming the h/w supports the bands). With the hack, the G-Note lost a bunch of signal strength and battery life so it's far from perfect.

The AT&T model does not have the correct bands to work on 3G/4G TMo. All you will get is Edge.

Hardware-wise it has.
If you go to HTC USA website you see that it does. The Tegra 3 based international version doesn't, but Rogers/AT&T version does. There is another thread where someone purchased the Rogers version and tried to use it on WIND (which uses the same band as tmobile usa), and got no data (phone is unlocked, but no edge no 3G). If the problem is due to the lack of WIND/tmobile 3G bands, he would have at least get EDGE data. He contacted HTC Canada and HTC verified that the phone hardware indeed support those band, and the issue has to do with Rogers implementation of the software.
The same happened with AT&T Galaxy Note. It supports tmobile 3G band, but was disabled in software. People here are able to open up those bands by flashing new radio on it.
It is still not know whether the AT&T One X has T-Mobile 3G bands disabled in software or not, and if it does, whether it can be easily re-enabled. But the hardware support is there.
So if I buy the att one XL outright (and dont do nothing else) and pop in the tmobile micro sim will it work..meaning make phone calls and all? And it'll just get edge right?

As long as you purchase an unlock code and unlock the phone then it will give you edge + voice on Tmobile.

This sucks. I'm on Tmobile and was holding out for the AT&T One X to use on Tmobile. Didnt want the One S because of the small screen. May have to go with the Galaxy Nexus for 400.00.

Well assuming you unlock it and live in a refarmed 1900 hsdpa area from tmobile can you get 3G that way?

1900 hasn't been refarmed in my area but that would be the only option for somebody to use the One X on 3g/4g.

Is there or will there be an unlock for the one x so we can use it (phone calls, edge etc) on the tmobile network?

Yes...most definitely. Once the AT&T version is officially released, you'll likely see numerous posts on how to unlock. There are some threads already starting if you search...
Here is an unlock site the says they can unlock the ONE X (AT&T Version) phone already. It costs in the neighborhood of $15, but that is a small price to pay to carrier unlock. If you live in a TMobile area that has reassigned their HSPA+ to the same 1900MHz Band AT&T uses it should be well worth being able to grab a tmobile sim for back up data or switching over completely. From what I have read, TMobile will be moving most of their markets HSPA+ to the 1900 MHz band in the not too distant future so this could be win win. I am going to give this a shot on May 4th when my phone is supposed to show up, I will post back with my success or failure.
Just a random thought that came into my head.
T-mobile is getting the One S, which also uses the S4. Given that the radio is integrated in the S4 chipset, and both the One X(AT&T) and One S are using the same SoC, they probably have the same capabilities with regards to the networks. In that case, it may "simply" be a matter of producing a modem driver with support for the T-mobile bands.
Disclaimer: This is all conjecture on my part, as I'm not entirely sure what is involved with cell phone radios and the more modern technologies.

Sorry, that's a negative.
There are several variations of the Snapdragon S4. Some with LTE, some without.
In this case, the One X LTE has the S4 MSM8960 with LTE. The One S has the S4 MSM8260A, without LTE.
What exactly is WCDMA AWS band? Because on the HTC website it says the One XL has that. I thought that is both bands for tmobile 4G.
