So I've got a non-rooted HTC Sensation 4G (TMoUS) and the phone has been acting very weird. I finally called T-Mobile because data was working in 4G areas but not 2G areas. My apn was correct, so I couldn't think of a reason for it. As you likely suspect, guy had me power down to reprovision me.
My phone was taking forever to reboot (as usual - 3+ minutes) and the guy told me to pull the battery. At the point that I pulled the battery, I had the black HTC splash screen up. After I rebooted again, I only get to the T-Mobile "Stick Together" splash screen, the screen goes black as if the phone is turned off (no backlighting), and never to the black HTC splash screen anymore. The phone no longer responds to any key presses and to reboot I need to remove the battery.
I did the thing where I hold the volume button down and can access hboot. My issue is that I don't want to do a factory reset just yet. I want to get booted up so I can backup my SMS/Call Logs and whatever else isn't automatically backed up. I tried choosing the "recovery" option from hboot and get the red triangle with exclamation mark. By accident, I discovered that holding volume up and hitting the power button brings up an additional menu. It also shows some yellow text that says the following:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
E:Error in /data/data/recovery/log
(Read-only file system)
I go ahead and select the "Reboot system now" option and see a message that says:
Success Rebooting by reasonem-00...
E:Error in /data/data/recovery/log
E:Error in /data/data/recovery/log
...and then it reboots; with no success, of course.
What am I able to do to backup or recover the data not automatically backed-up? Is there a self-healing or self-repair mode that stops short of wiping my data? What isn't backed up by the phone to Google and what is backed up to the SD card? It's a shame that the manual doesn't explain this crap. I actually can't even find a post that explains the options in the hboot menu and the potential repercussions of selecting a particular option. I'm at a loss here, sorry.
I know you say it's a last resort, but I would try resetting to factory using the stock RUU. If you still have these problems it maybe a problem with the NAND (I've seen similar problems with PCs but I don't know how reliable NAND is compared to regular RAM).
I just don't want to lose my call logs and/or SMS messages.
If my phone can make it to hboot, can't I use the SDK/ADB to somehow grab my /data from the phone?
I'm having a very hard time accepting that there is no self-heal or self-repair function for Android short of doing a factory reset and losing all but the data on your SD. There must be a way.

it automatically backs up your call log and sms messages to your gmail account and can also restore it from there onto another phone.
If you had an htc sense account linked to your phone all your texts and your call log are backed up to the cloud automatically. If you send it for repair and it gets reset or replaced, add the sense account back to the new phone to get your logs back.
You can go to htcsense.com if you wish to confirm your stuff is up in the cloud.

Ok so this morning I go to backup my phone since I haven't done it in 4 months. (I'm running an AT&T Tilt)
I open up the Sprite Backup program and set it to back up the phone. It restarts the phone (as usual) and begins the backup process on startup. Then, when it finishes, it restarts again but it won't boot up. It goes to a white error screen that says something along the lines of "A program with an unsigned cab has been installed" or something like that and says to "press the SEND button to reset the phone or any other button to cancel. This operation will delete all of your personal data and reset the phone to factory settings."
Uh-oh, I thought... So I hit another button because I don't want to lose all of my personal data. It stayed on the white AT&T screen with the R, G, and D numbers on the bottom right corner.
After resetting and taking out the battery and resetting again, nothing changed. So I popped the microSD card into my computer to see if SpriteBackup actually finished backing up the system. Hey! It was there, about 62MB in size and it was a whole file (no corruption), with today's date and the time that I backed it up. So I said, alright, let me just turn on the phone, press the SEND button to reset it, and then just restore the Backup file with SpriteBackup. I did it and it restored it, but after rebooting, the initial configuration screen for the phone kicks in again (the one that comes up when you first buy the phone) and it reinstalls the "stock" programs and settings.
Almost everything is back to normal, except:
I'm missing some contacts that I've added within the past 3 months.
I'm missing some text/MMS messages since May 19th...
In the "Remove Programs" windows, there are only 5 programs installed, the ones that come stock with the phone.
Does anyone know a solution? Or if there's a way to transfer my contacts/messages out of the SpriteBackup file to my computer, i might as well just wipe my phone clean, install an updated rom, and start from scratch.
All I need are all my contacts and my messages. Does anyone know where they are located?

I have a Tmobile HTC One M7 that I paid $300 for. It was awesome! However, I wanted to root it. So I successfully unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and then proceeded to attempt to root. Something went wrong and now this thing is useless! I cannot tell you where it went wrong because when the first sign of trouble appeared I started doing all kinds of **** to try and fix it, none of which worked and I have lost track of what I did in the process of trying to root and then subsequently trying to fix. I know there were some wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, install zip from SD, I may have even tried to flash a custom ROM without the thing being rooted. I have been reading for days, trying this, trying that to no avail. The phone is brand new, without a scratch. It will power up like normal, but when it gets to the lock screen where you swipe the little lock in the bottom tray to use the phone it will not respond at all! It recognizes the network because it is displayed in the notifications bar up top, it can see the signal strength, it knows what time it is, it knows what the date is, but it will not get past the damn lock screen. ADB sideload works. I was able to push a zip and flashed it, even said android is upgrading when I rebooted, but it did not solve my problem. It will not power off, but when I hold the power button down, to turn it off the back arrow < and home symbol flash and after about 10 seconds a dialog box pops up that says to restart your phone continue to press and hold the power button and starts a countdown. Once the countdown gets to zero it restarts. If I hold the volume down button while doing this it will go into the boatloader and I can get into recovery. Apparently there is no backup to restore because when I try a restore I get the same exact same thing. I thought I had done one, I must have erased it somehow. I have been trying to resolve this for weeks now and am at my wits end. Any suggestions please !?!? Will anyone on this forum take it if I ship to them and fix for a fee? Otherwise this things going in the trash.
My tablet froze on me and I powered it down to restart it and then it went into what folks on here call a bootloop. After holding down Power and volume down, it brought me to a screen that had three icons and I chose the one on the right by mistake and now it's looping again, but instead of the Asus screen with the refreshing icon, it's the android falling with an Error on his chest after quickly flashing Installing System Update.
The power volume combo works no more and the only way I can shut off my tablet completely is to use the power and volume up button. I can't get back to screen with the three icons no matter how many times I try.
I've already resolved myself to purchasing a new device, so my main concern is recovering the data, slim as that might be. Any recommendations?
Also, note that Ive never rooted or installed anything on my tablet. No roms or kernels or any other modifications. If I can get my data by any means necessary, I'd be satisfied, even If I Ihad to open it and retrieve the harddrive.

If I read your post correctly, you selected the right icon which is a Wipe data from your bootloader. When you executed that Wipe data, it will wipe everything on your internal SD including your /media folder or your personal files and data... The chance is very slim unless someone knows how to recover data from a wipe. Technically, your data is still there but it is only a dumb files which contain only 0's and 1's. Some recovery tools may be able to retrieve your data but I don't have that knowledge.. I hope that someone will be able to help you out and good luck...:fingers-crossed:

Do I suspect correctly that you interrupted the Wipe Data process after selecting it "accidentally"?
Choosign Wipe Data from the bootloader causes the BL to write a command to the misc partition to start the recovery and wipe the data partition. If you interrupted the process, there's no telling what and where that got corrupted - unless you just let it loop and pray that it finishes the wipe process which would erase the BL command. Connect it to power and let it loop for a few hours. What have you got to loose?
But your data is gone either way - sorry.

I'm not all too sure what the Icon on the left wad, but I'm sure it said RKU or some sort. I would have given up all hope if I had hit the wipe data on the right.
Days recovery aside, is there anyway I can get my looped tablet to work? I plugged it into a comp and it didn't recognise it.
A couple of months back I decided to root my device. I did this using the unlocking the bootloader method. I had to download the stock Android 4.4.4 from online, which I flashed my phone with - no problems. Things ran smoothly from then for about a month, and then I realised that my cellular network started to malfunction, and I couldn't access apps like YouTube and Snapchat on the cellular network. This prompted me today to do a "soft reset" of my phone, by holding the power button and volume up button simultaneously for about 3 seconds - under the impression that it would restore my phone settings back to the factory default.
Much to my horror, the worst case scenario happened. When I performed the soft reset, my phone vibrated 3 times and switched off. When I tried to turn it back on, it would show the boot-up screen indicating "SONY", followed by the next screen indicating "powered by android", and then it would show the blue screen with the wavy lines. It stayed on this screen for about 20 minutes. I figured something was wrong, and I tried to soft reset it again, only to be stuck at the blue screen once again. I decided to let it stay that way for 2 more hours, in order to drain the battery. When the battery drained, I turned it back on, and it was still stuck at the blue wavy screen.
I don't know a whole lot about Android phones, and I have no idea why this is happening, but it is causing me an immense amount of frustration - I have invaluable data on that phone, and to lose it would just be devastating. I can't even begin to describe it. I'm using TWRP recovery, and I'm also using TitaniumBackup which is backed up onto my phone's internal storage, and I can't access any of the files on my phone from my computer, because it doesn't recognise my phone.
This has been a long one, thanks for bearing with me. I've got a few questions:
1. What's the problem that's preventing my phone from booting?
2. How do I fix it?
3. If it's unfixable, how can I retrieve my data from my phone?

Can you boot into TWRP's recovery mode using the volume down key?
Just press volume down when you see the green light on your notification led upon powering on your phone
Well something keeps the phone to boot, try to clean cache in recovery, it might help.
But to restore data on internal storage, count it as unpossible.

I connect to local WiFi
The Terms of Use are displayed. I select NEXT.
The phone displays:

Checking for Updates...

Then, a Google sign on screen appears, and immediately is replaced by the "Just a Sec..." screen and a notification window that says "Android Setup has stopped."
I've never done anything more advanced with phones than wiping a cache partition, but am willing to try most anything with this phone at this point. I've nothing to lose, but would love to get it back into service.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would try the hole process not connecting to WIFI
Also you might try to do a Hard Reset, just be sure to have enough battery

A hard reset will wipe all data from the device and set everything back to factory settings. Ensure you have backed up your data before proceeding.

Turn the phone off by pressing and holding the “Power” button for 3 seconds, then selecting “Power off“.
Press and hold the “Volume Down” button and press release the “Power” button to turn the U11 on.
When the HTC logo appears, release both buttons.
Press “Volume Down” to select “Factory Reset“, then press the “Power” button to choose it.
The device will then restart and the hard reset will be complete.

Excellent! I bypassed WiFi and everything else, and now I'm looking at a proper home screen! Any other tips or suggestions to get the most out of this device? Maybe getting it back to Oreo, when everything worked? I'm now getting the "Unable to start Camera" error that I've heard a lot of users have had.

Hey ESJ...I have the same issue with my HTCU11 here in Australia. I just posted yesterday to this Q&A session (above yours, sorry, didn't see your post) . I eventually got it to go past this point (don't ask me how). I went back and forth between a factory reset to clearing the cache partition and re-starting and finally it just booted up to the basic HTC screen with the factory installed apps. I have everything backed up, but the problem is, now I can't log in to any Google accounts. It crashes at the log in screen with ""Google Play services has stopped". I read elsehwere that there was aproblem with Chrome and "Android System Webview" and that there's an update to fix this problem, but I can't log into my Google accounts (Acounts, GMail, Play Store, etc) to download the update...I'm stymied. I suspect you have a similar issue? Hopefully an Andorid/Google guru will have a step by step solution, otherwise, I'll just get a new phone....and not an HTC!!!

I was an HTC fan for years, but I am done with them. I'm currently studying the process for downgrading to Oreo on this U11 to see if I can get it revived. That may be your best strategy as well. Good luck, Mate!
