[Q] Issue with Boot Recovery - HTC Inspire 4G

Hello,
First thanks to all who help and contribute to this forum, specially to attn1 and contributors to the Hack Kit.
I been playing with different ROMs to find one that suits me, I had been able to successfully follow the Hack Kit manual and root the phone and later install different ROMs.
I wanted to check out the new AT&T Stock ROM
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_Cingular_US_2.47.502.7_Radio _12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M
and after installing it with the executable from HTC I have an issue with the Recovery Boot. When I press the Power+Down Volume as expected I go to the menu and got the following:
ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.85.0024
MICROP-0438
Radio-26.10.04.03_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 12 2011,00:55:45
and the HBOOT Menu.
If I click any key before movine the the options I got a meesages that says that the following files are missing or are not valid.
PD98DIAG.zip
PD98DIAG.nbh
PD98IMG.zip
PD98IMG.nbh
and then I can move between menus without problem, if I go back to the BOOTLOADER menu I get again the messages about the files.
If I try a recovery I got a error screen (I only tried one) that is like a cellphone with a red something on it.
I think I miss something or did something wrong while chaging ROMs or rooting the phone.
Can some describe me what is happening and how can I correct it?
Many thanks

Flashing the RUU deletes your ClockworkMod Recovery. Not sure if you can a temp root would allow you to flash CWR.
Edit- just realized that if you flash genes rom there is no need to go down to attn1 rom, my bad
Edit 2- heres the link to genes thread. the file is in post 4. download that rename it to PD98IMG. flash through hboot. now youll be on stock rooted and be able to reinstall CWR.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191949

Apologize for the question, how do I flash through hboot, just copy the renamed file to the root of the SD Card and perform a recovery?
EDIT - Sorry, I just read Gene's post in full
This is an unsigned PD98IMG so you must have S-OFF and it will delete your data partition so backup (titanium
and nandroid just to be sure). All AT&T bloatware included.
Instructions: Download it, rename to PD98IMG.zip, copy it to your SDCARD, then boot into hboot (hold VOL-DOWN
and press POWER) then let hboot finish its check and then hit VOL-UP to install.
Many thanks!

in a sense yes. it'll look for the file as you stated in your first post. this time with th file there it will find it and ask if you want to apply it.

Rather then go back wards why not go forwards?
Be careful not to quickly take out and replace your battery
Look at the INDEX sticky thread in the development Section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601, there you should find
1) EXT4 recovery
2) pre rooted stock roms, use the latest version
(RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085 AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed_prerooted)
Download both to you PC then copy to your sd card.
Boot into recovery and first flash EXT4 zip file to install the new recovery
Then from recovery wipe cache, dalvik cache, data and system.
Then flash the ROM zip file and hopefully this should solve your problem
First boot will take longer than usual
I'm also curious as to why your bootloader screen days "meadow" I've never seen that before.

Thank you for your prompt response!
After I had written my post yesterday I took the battery out of my unit and put it in again and there after, the total death now I can not turn it on. so there is probably nothing more than to bring it back to warranty?

Bugger, when you say won't turn on, exactly what happens or doesn't happen?
Are you sure that the battery is charged (daft question) but had I ask
plug it in and see if the led lights
Swyped from HTC Desire S using XDA Premium
When I press the power button nothing happens .. no light in the LED phone is 80% power remaining.
I sent it for repair on warranty :-(

You need to follow the guides shown in this thread.
Look for this "How To: S-Off your device with Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool" part of the guide.
Good luck....update this thread if you have any issues or problems....but first there is a lot of software that you'll need to download and some reading to do.

OK if i understand it right i wil do like this.
S-OFF your phone using Windows:
1. Download Revolutionary tool for Windows from http://revolutionary.io/ (Keep the browser open)
2. Extract the zip file to a new folder.
3. Connect phone to your computer and make sure that Debugging Mode is enabled on your phone.
4. Open the new folder and right click on "revolutionary.exe" and select run as administrator.
5. Follow steps from Step 11 above.
11. It'll provide a key. Go back to the browser window where you downloaded Revolutionary tool - there's a form to fill out. Type in the key. It'll generate a second key. Type that key into the Terminal.
12. Make sure it says that everything is successful. It'll ask if you want to flash Clockwork. Type in "Y".
13. Once it shows success, reboot phone.
And root it hwit Gingerbreak right ?
Now you have CWM, so you don't have to use Gingerbreak, just flash su (http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip) from recovery. You may also want to flash 4EXT recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130004) that will replace the one installed by Revolutionary.

CWM = Clock Work Mod, which is the type of Custom RECOVERY that we all use that enables us to flash custom ROMS etc, I'd recommend that you upgrade to the the EXT4 RECOVERY which is based on CWM but is more user friendly and constantly being improved.

You need to start following the advise that's being given, or at least inform us whether you've done the suggested steps...
For example two people have suggested that you now install EXT4 over CWM (RECOVERY) have you done this?

Check for super user, simply download ROM Manager (free) from android market and that will tell you.
A Backup (or a Nandroid backup or as you'll here it referred to) can be taken two ways:
1) from ROM Manager - easiest option (as it then boots device into recovery, backs up phone and then reboots again)
2) from recovery (EXT4) you need to take manually Backup option (although is good to know how to do this way)
Using both methods the backups will be stored on your SD card in clockworkmod/backup directory within date&time stamped folders

[Q] My phone doesn't boot after loading back a stock firmware

Hi,
Recently I flashed my phone to CyanogenMod 7.1. Later on I changed my mind and wanted to use the latest stock ROM. Specifically RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.5_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_219480_signed.exe.
I extracted the file and followed the instructions. After the flashing is done, I got stuck with the HTC logo on the white screen.
Before that I rooted my phone using Revolutionary and used ClockworkMod to install any image, but now this part is gone due to flashing to stock firmware... so I get the original Android system recovery with options like reboot, apply update from sd card, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.
So, as a result, I am still able to go to the boot menu as usual, but I can't install any image. When I try to open the CyanogenMod ROM file from the sdcard, I get this message:
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

I tried to connect the USB cable to my PC, but I could not get adb working. Actually, the only thing that recognized my phone was the exe file of the stock firmware (in FASTBOOT USB mode). I wish that I could use revolutionary again or at least to deactivate signature verification, so I would be able to flash using the extended recovery screen (and as a result I would be able to install any ROM that I want).
How do I get out of this messy situation?
Thanks a lot for your help.
The thing messed up because the phone was able to successfully update the ROM, but its your HBOOT now which has a problem. What you've tried to do will NEVER gonna work. You have managed to S-OFF your phone, you should have know already that its unchangeable (on a certain angle).
The latest official ROM uses system/lib on a separate partition but your HBOOT does not support that. That maybe one of the reason why ROM is not booting up.
Installing CM directly won't be successful as you are not in a custom recovery.
Method to get out of this messy situation:
1. Install custom recovery via fastboot
2. Install custom ROM again
3. If you really want to be on stock, you need to change your HBOOT first to either the old S-ON or S-OFF HBOOT, then RUU (GoldCard recommended). It's just easy considering you are still on revolutionary HBOOT.
All the step's guides has already been posted a LOT on the forum, use search.
Hint!

Thanks so much. That really helped. I thought that getting the original stock ROM back would be as easy as setting a new ROM, so I am back to CM7.1 and everything is fine now.

The RUU.exe needs to be executed on a PC and then you will find the ROM.zip file in the %TEMP directory structure. This ROM.zip file is the one you copy to you SD card and rename as PG88IMG.zip.
You can't simply rename the RUU.exe file to PG88IMG.zip.

So did that work for you? If so please edit your title from [Q] to [SOLVED] to help inform others.
I think I had the same problem, but it's now solved with a little luck and studying the xda foorums. My situation was pretty complex, unbranded UK model didn't update so I rooted it with Revolutionary and installed Cyanogenmod 7.1. I didn't like it, so I restored original backup through ROM Manager. I was happy with the stock 2.3.3, until I realized that 2.3.5 is out. After factory reset the OTA update kicked in. At that time I didn't know that Hboot is still Revolutionary and S-off. No root, however. So the update failed.
Yesterday I decided that I want the 2.3.5 and downloaded stock RUU update and installed it. It was the same 1.28.401 version I was running. Installation via PC went fine, then came OTA updates (three of them). First two went fine, but the third update hanged on yellow exclamation mark. After removing the battery phone hang on white HTC screen. I was able to access the boot manager, but nothing else.
Next step was to restore original Hboot. It was tricky, fastboot found the device but installation failed with image error! (Platform check fail). Adb didn't even find the phone. I assume that eMMC was corrupted at this point. I was not able to access Recovery to fix it. Then I found recovery.img and was able to install it from SD-card. I booted recovery, formatted all partitions (cache, system etc.), reset battery data. Next I tried fastboot flash hboot engHBOOToverARX.img again and it worked! Goodbye Revolutionary
Then I just loaded the stock (RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8) ROM on SD card (renamed ROM.zip to PG88IMG.zip as always), installed it from Hboot and everything was fine. Hboot is locked and S-on. Running the latest 2.10.401.8 software with Android 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0.
All the needed information is on this forum. I cannot thank you enough for bringing my brick back to life!
Hi Daatta, I have the same problem as you did. It won't load update.zip or PG88IMG.zip ...I've tried everything (sort of)
What do you mean exactly "Then I found recovery.img and was able to install it from SD-card. " How did you do that?
How can I make the phone read from the sd card?
Thanks!
Just head for this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488672
I did it! But now it won't install my rom....it's the same I was using before...installation begins, but suddenly it gets aborted..weird...any ideas?
SOLVED! I was using the wrong file it was a renaming screw up

[Q] Desire S, Rooted, S-On, Cant flash new custom ROM

Hey Guys
First time poster here and not massively technical at all so be gentle with me
Ok so over the weekend I decided I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with these custom ROM's that you can download. So I did some research and decided to give it a go. Please bear with me dudes. So what I did was as follows:
1) Unlocked the bootloader following HTCdev.com guide. Success
2) Rooted the phone, now have super user and can grant SU permissions to apps. Success
3) Installed ROM Manager, latest version. Success
4) Attempted to Flash clockworkmod to recovery using ROM Manager. Stated success in the app.
5) In ROM Manager I attempted to make a backup of my stock rom, asked me to enter a backup name and click OK, device reboots and I see a red exclamation mark when it tried to reboot into recovery, suggesting that step 4 was actually a failure.
6)Downloaded latest clockworkmod image file from the clockworkmod site and using a tool called android flasher (I think) I was able to flash the recovery image to the recovery partition. Phone reboots and boots into recovery and boom I have the clockworkmod recovery available to me.
7) Immediately took a backup of my stock rom so can convert back if things go pear shaped. Success.
8) I downloaded 2 custom rom's, Cyanogenmod latest 7.1.0 build and MIUI custom rom, both for Desire S. Success
9) Put both rom's onto my 8GB sd card as instructed by a guide I was following and booted into clockworkmod and wiped cache, data and system. Success
10) In clockworkmod selected install zip from SD card, found the Cyanogen zip and selected it, it proceeds to install. Reports success.
11) Reboot phone and it hangs on the HTC logo screen, nothing doing. Failure.
12) I have to boot back into CWM and restore my backup which is a success.
So what I end up with is my stock rom with an unlocked bootloader, rooted as I have superuser app and can grant SU permissions to ROM Manager and titanium backup. But I don't seem to be able to get a custom rom on there. I have tried formatting sd card, putting a new rom on and then taking battery out for 15 mins but again nothing doing, everything I try I just get a hanging HTC logo after reboot and again I have to restore my backup that I made to get a working phone again.
Here are some details from the bootloader:

Sorry for the mahoooooossive post guys but its really bugging me that I cant get a custom rom on there, stock rom rooted just wasn't what I was looking for.
Really hope you guys can give some help/advice
Stewie
All yours steps seems fine to me.
The first time you flash a custom rom, it could takes MINUTES before boot (Once I waited 10 min with a rom).
How long did u wait when the HTC logo appeared?
Have you tried to S-OFF your Desire S?
It could be one of the reason why you can't flash properly.
Here all the guides (maybe you already know everything):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401
EDIT:
As I suspected, it does stated it clearly in the link I gave you:
FAQs:
1. What's S-OFF and S-ON?
- If your phone is S-ON, you won't be able to root or flash custom ROMs to your phone. S-OFF let's you to have full control of your phone.
(NOTE: S-OFF is not ROOT, S-OFF your device does not mean that your device is Rooted. They are totally two different things.)
yukinok25, dude thanks for that, I was kinda thinking that it may have something to do with the s-on / s-off thing.
I'll have a butchers at trying to s-off the device, but I thought it was supposed to be a pretty tricky procedure with the version of HBoot that I have on my device, i.e 2.00.0002. So I was hoping to avoide the s-off process but if I gotta do it then I gotta do it, just hope it all goes ok.
Again thanks for the link man, good to get some help as im a bit of a rookie at this sort of stuff ;-)
Cheers
Stewie
Anytime mate.
Just because you are new to XDA: you can use the thanks button next time...
Not sure if this is still relevant, but there is a simple guide on the Dev forum on how to S-OFF the new HBOOT:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100
Also, the recommended custom recovery is 4EXT, which is based on Clockwork but more advanced. There is even a touch version now:

[GUIDE] Using the ICS OTA files

Seeing as there are FAR too many stupid people on this forum I'm going to make this REALLY simple...
*** NOTE*** - This guide assumes you are already S-OFF. If you are not (e.g. 100% stock) then you WILL have to run Revolutionary to get S-OFF before continuing
Original Sensation:
Firstly - you HAVE to be running 1.50.401.1 to use this OTA file. If you're on ANY other build then don't ask about flashing it as I WILL report you to Mods for being a dumbass.
You also have to be 100% stock (e.g. NOT rooted). If you are running a custom ROM you HAVE to use the 1.50.401.1 RUU to get back to stock but you HAVE to leave the phone S-OFF. CID can be whatever you had if you are running x.xx.401.x when you got it new but if you've flashed the RUU coming from another build then set yours to HTC__001 before starting
1. Download the 3.32.401.5 OTA file from HTC - http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_PYRAMID_I...1.50.401.1_release_252072fll6erqo75dsziua.zip. You do NOT have to rename the file
2. Copy the file to the root of your SD card
3. Turn your phone off and turn it back on whilst holding the volume down button. If the HBOOT menu doesn'y appear then you need to turn off fast boot in the Settings>Power menu
4. Select 'Recovery' from the menu to enter the stock Recovery. If CWM loads up, stop now and flash the 1.50.401.1 RUU
5. When you get to the screen with the red ! on it, hold volume up and press power. It will say 'cant open cache/recovery/command' and then bring up the recovery menu
6. Select the option to apply an update from your SD card and then select the OTA file
7. Wait the 10 minutes or so for it to flash
8. When prompted, reboot the phone
9. You're now running stock ICS 4.0.3 with Sense 3.6
Sensation XE:
Firstly - you HAVE to be running 1.73.401.4 to use this OTA file. If you're on ANY other build then don't ask about flashing it as I WILL report you to Mods for being a dumbass.
You also have to be 100% stock (e.g. NOT rooted). If you are running a custom ROM you HAVE to use the 1.73.401.4 RUU to get back to stock but you HAVE to leave the phone S-OFF. CID can be whatever you had if you are running x.xx.401.x when you got it new but if you've flashed the RUU coming from another build then set yours to HTC__001 before starting
1. Download the 3.32.401.105 OTA file from HTC - http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_PYRAMID_L...73.401.4_P_release_246589q3t6rh79ci68p68k.zip.
If CWM loads up, stop now and flash the 1.73.401.4 RUU
9. You're now running stock ICS 4.0.3 with Sense 3.6 and Beats Audio
Now, this can't really be made ANY clearer. If you can't follow this then you should walk away now as I will not tolerate anyone asking something that is already stated above. If I have actually missed something then please PM me - do NOT post it here in this thread as it's a reference thread
*** EDIT: I've attached the stock recovery taken from the 1.50.401.1 RUU. It's the same as the XE one so will work for all users ***
haha lol, i see you used your "anger" to help other people and make this world better
Great job, this should clear up the ICS OTA thread!
And its as easy and as simple as that... , i will say tho that when i downgraded from ICS custom rom and was flashing 1.73.401.4 i did by downgrade by PG58IMG.zip on sdcard, when it came to the system.img to be flashed it looks like it has trouble , instead of the side column being blue , mine went red / black 3 or 4 times in a row... still flashed all good tho..
You can do it that way too but I'm guessing n00bs would have a nightmare and having to write up a guide on extracting the PG58IMG.zip from the RUU is a ballache
Might do it, though, but this thread isn't about flashing an RUU - it's for flashing the OTA over the top of it
Very noob here so be gentle -ish.
Thanks for the guide very clear, one small question if the volume rocker of my sensation has fallen off can I still use this method?
Many thanks for that very precise and clear guide, Eddy.
I guess now everyone should be able to perform that update.
May I raise a question in regard to restoring system settings and installed apps?
Obviously, when flashing the original RUU to get the phone into the right status for flashing the update all system settings and individualy installed apps will be gone.
How do I proceed to get a restorable backup?
Should I just make a full backup using e.g. Titanium Backup before I flash the original RUU and will it be possible to restore it later on the updated ICS device?
I am not sure if its that easy, since as far as I know Titanium needs a rooted device to work, right?
This would mean I need to root the ICS device before I will be able to restore?
Will the backup be compatible with ICS so that all system data and apps will be there again?
Would be great if you could provide me with some guidance on this question as well.
Many thanks in advance.

Is it possible to do this, because I did:
1. Download the 3.32.401.5 OTA file from HTC - http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_PYRAMID_IC...tztog0er50.zip. You do NOT have to rename the file
2. Copy the file to the root of your SD card
3. Turn your phone off and turn it back on whilst holding the volume down button.
4. Select 'Recovery' from the menu to enter the stock Recovery.
5.When you get to the screen with the red ! on it, hold volume up and press power. This will bring up the recovery menu
When do step 5. say: E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command. OK I ignored and go to step 6.Select the option to apply an update from your SD card and then select the OTA file but say Invalid operation, succes rebooting.....
Whats wrong ?

Yes, and ... ?
If you are, then you'll get it OTA, you won't be able to flash it manually.

I will wait for OTA, because want to do s off because must go on waranty because dropping calls
You need to take the battery out, then put it back in to get into recovery first off. Second off the reason that the phone is booting up in one second is because you have Fast Boot enabled, so your phone is not really turning off it is actually going into a "Sleep Mode" hence how it can boot up so fast.
Thank you EddyOS. Followed your guide and now I'm running ICS! It's way faster.

Hi. I've read whole tutorial. My phone is a Sensation with stock XE rom 1.73.401.4, not root, S-Off and HTC__001 CID. I can't apply update from recovery, on verifying system it fails on something like "/system/blah/blah/mpdecision...". I applied kernele patch to 1.5ghz when I installed stock rom and I think this is the reason. Any idea?
