[FIX][HOW-TO]Gingerbread 2.3.3 GPS Instant Lock - T-Mobile LG G2x

So I was wondering why some people with the new baseband where having issues getting instant locks.
Well it happen to me too and It couldn't get a lock. Really frustrating. Probably first thing everyone that likes to have a working GPS do is flash a different ROM. No more!
to fix this, what you need to do is the following:
Go to settings>applications>maps
Under maps
-Clear data
-Clear cache
-Uninstall updates
Open maps with an open sky first to download the required data, open GPS and BAM instant lock!
Try it and let me know if it works for you too

Gonna give this a try in the morning, will report back with results.

So we need an old version of google maps for it to work?

You don't have to have an older version, you can immediately update through market to the newest if you like.

How do you do this?

Not trying to sound like a smarta$$, but if you're standing outside for a few minutes attempting this "fix", the GPS (unless disabled) is obtaining its lock in the background and is not dependent on the maps service. You could spend 10 minutes outside playing with your ding dong, then open maps and BAM! Instant lock!
Maybe somebody who isn't a noob like myself can confirm this, but I think you may have been too close to the trees to see the forest on this one.

If you install a AOSP ROM without Gapps you will notice that Navigation (gps) is not included until you either flash gapps or download "maps" from the market, since navigation is included with maps.
When I said I was getting instant locks I was actually referring to navigation and not to maps even though that I'm getting 6 meters of accuracy with maps.
Hope that helps

I see no real improvement. GPS still sucks in Gingerbread.

I had a bad GPS with my first G2X. Called tmo customer service and got a new one and now it locks on within 5-20 seconds. It's hardware, none of the software fixes worked for me.
Sent from my Transformer TF101

I tried it and I got an instant lock indoors. We'll see how it hold up.

You need to open maps and let it download the data. Close gps open it, and you should great instant lock.

GPS isn't used unless an app enables it. Your phone isn't always searching for GPS lock in the background. It it activates when you open an app that uses it.

Op updated with more accurate instructions
Btw, this does works, been doing it with every ROM I flashed after I updated to the new baseband and in getting instant locks.

Thanks dude...that works for me....

No luck for me.
Interesting note: using GPS STATUS, I can get data from 8 satellites at a time without a fix/lock. The satellites however are all piloted on top of eachother. In otherwords, the app knows the birds are there bit doesn't know where they are.
If I check the birds with the hidden menu, same thing. The birds are there but zero azimuth angle and "false" ephimerus(?) data.
It seems like a simple software issue.....pull the data from the birds signals?

GPS Questions

Guys, I have a rather stupid question, and feel free to flame my newbness on the question all you want, I'm just trying to find an answer, for like monthes now...
I have NEVER been able to get my GPS to work, not even once.... It's been a problem for so long, that I eventually just told myself, well I guess I have to pay AT&T for that..... but I don't see why that's the case....
I have tried all of the programs, HTCGPSTool, QuickGPS, Google Maps, etc, all with multiple ROMs.... Right now I'm flashing the Official Update to see if I can get it working with that, but I'm truly dumbfounded.... It has never once, ever gotten a lock, or even found satellites.... It's making me want to bring my fuze to warranty center to try and get a new one
Information about my device:
I have installed HardSPL, usually run EnergyROM latest build, with Radio 1.14.25.05
I've had the phone since last Nov so something different has always been running on it, and not ONCE has my GPS worked for me....
Any ideas?
Thanks
Try first turning on ChartCross GPSTEST (in GPS folder on Energy Rom) wait for lock and then turn on your desired GPS program. BTW Google maps only works with aGPS (needs internet). I recommend TomTom (what I use), iGo or Gramin.

GPS
I recently gave up on the hit and miss of Pocket CoPilot v6, and now I just load GPSToday to run in the background to get the sat connection and now PCP works like a champ. FINALLY!
Can't wait for v8 this year!
I would like to confirm that TomTom is infact the bomb, works perfectly
I'm using version 7.915.9196 with USA and Canada Maps V-830.2323 reccomend anyone to check it out
garmin is so much nicer than tomtom. the interface is prettier and easier to use. it does cost alot though. i thought it was worth it.

i would recommend u change ur radio to 1.12.25.19 and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468249 <-- its a program called fusion GPS that gets a lock upon restarting ur device so u wont have to wait for that long dreadful first time lock. also that Radio is the best GPS radio i have found so far, works even faster with aGPS, i have used that radio and i get like 3-15sec lock outside and 30-80 sec lock inside my house, depending on if am close to a window or not

it always keeps timing out after the five minute interval.... maybe because my data connection doesn't auto-start on boot.... any way I can make that happen? but even when i do go start it, it still times out... seems ChartCross has been the best for me, and with aGPS, it will get a lock pretty quickly

I've had this exact same problem when also running latest Energy rom with radio 1.14.25.05, (I also have a lot of problems keeping a constant wifi connection even at full signal but thats another story).
This morning i flashed back to my original stock rom (vodafone uk) and although i had to wait FOUTY FIVE minutes for my first GPS signal i now have no problems with the latest version of TomTom and my uptodate USA & Canada map (i now live in Montreal)
Im going to run the stock rom for a day or two to see how it should run, then switch back to the Energy "Magic" rom as i really like that one out of all the 6.5 Roms.
Very strange.
Still the only way I can get it to work on a cooked ROM, is to use ChartCrossGPSTest.... wait until it says GPS Running, and go launch TomTom, leave ChartCross minimized

Google Maps 4.0

Has anyone tried out the new GMAPS 4.0 on their device? Has anyone got it to work when using GPS? I installed it and everytime I click on Use GPS it crashes the application. This use to happen to my old I910 with version 3.32 and not sure why.

wow, I just got my i-920 omnia2 about 4 weeks ago and it was about 3 weeks ago I downloaded and installed google maps. it is version 3.3.0. when did they come out with version 4? the one I have works fine. takes a while to acquire satellites. I just tried out that latitude yesterday. very cool thing, but it didn't work. but the phone that I was "tracking" had latidute running then "exit". it asks if you want to still send location info and yes was selected. per google, when in this mode it sends signal based on cell tower info--does this to preserve battery life since if the gps were on constantly and sending signal if would drain it. cell tower info not as accurate. but it didn't work at all. showed essentially no movement. was going to try to leave google maps open and thus sending gps info to see if it worked that way.
oh, to original poster--didn't the i910 have gps locked so you couldn't use it except for verizon stuff?

The GPS on the I910 was unlocked. I used IGO8 as well as GOOGLE MAPS and BING.
GPS
I have the i920 and have installed the google4 with no problems. The gps was locked within one minute, didn't time it but was within 10 meters.
Just installed Google Maps 4.0 yesterday -- works AWESOME on my i920, gps lock within 30 seconds when outside. Unfortunately still no navigation like they have on the newer android devices (grr, google bastadz!) but it most certainly does not crash.
What ROM are you using, and did you uninstall the older version manually before installing the new one? Also try using SKTools' uninstaller -- that will also scan for left behind registry keys \ temp\cache files and remove them.
Well I installed the newest version which is 4.1 with the voice command and it works great.
Working great
I would make sure you have the version available for the windows 6.5. Other than that I can't think of anything that would cause this problem besides the fact you don't have the GPS turned on for both the phone and the program.

GPS Locking

Hi all, is it only me having difficulty locking on GPS? I tried stock, leaked gb, bionix and eagleblood but no lock. It shows 5 or more available sats but it won't lock.
Any help is appreciated.

No, definitely not just you. There's something definitely off about the GPS driver in this phone. If you use an app like GPS Status or GPS Test, you'll see that the signal-to-noise ratios are all lots higher than they should be; whether that has a direct effect on TTFF (time to first fix), I don't know, but it's certainly indicative that the interface isn't right. It's also clear that it's not using the AGPS the way it's supposed to; it should load the ephemeris data and give essentially a hot fix (<15 seconds) every time, but I only get a warm fix (75-120 seconds) if it's been long enough for the ephemeris data from the satellites to have expired (~4 hours) since the last time I used the GPS. It also happens that occasionally I won't get a fix at all, but generally rebooting allows it to get a fix quickly.
I don't know whether it will help or not, but you could try fiddling with some of the GPS system parameters via the hidden menu (dial 1809#*999# and find "GPS Test").
I'm hoping that this is one of the things that will be fixes when we get the Gingerbread/bug-fix update, but I don't have any basis for that hope.

Give it a try before buying to make sure that it is compatible with your phone first. Best of luck...

newb questions about GPS on my phone

Hi everyone,
Running a galaxy sII lte, rooted on official 4.0.4 and my carrier is Rogers. I believe this is the same phone a the skyrocket so I hope I'm in the right forum.
I have a problem with the GPS on my device, or maybe the option is not available on my device I don't know. I did some research about it but still couldn't address this problem. I turn on my GPS signal and it tries to locate me for hours never actually pinning me anywhere on the map. Now I don't have a data connection, but the maps are all cached to my phone, it's the pinning that doesn't work for me. My question is, is my phone capable of doing this without a data connection? If not, what makes an iPhone different that it can do this? Why even have a GPS toggle if I'm getting limited through data?
Thanks in advance!
First off, let me say welcome to xda! Also yes u are in the right section.
Secondly, look for the "agps fix.". It will address the issue with non-locking. With it, I went from 20 seconds to 3.
If that doesn't work look for the galaxy nexus GPS fix, its pretty much the same as agps, which I recommend u try first.
Lastly, caching of Google maps is frankly, [email protected] U need a data connection to use them. For offline GPS, theres really only one app capable, sygic. Look for it in the play store. I have no experience with it so I can't comment on its effectiveness.
If I helped hit the thanks button
Hi!
I totally agree with Icenight89. I also have the Rogers' Skyrocket (the model number is SGH-i727R; you can verify this under the battery inside the phone), and I got problem with GPS position locking. It took about 10 to 15 minutes to lock my position; after I applied the fix, locking takes seconds.
Google Maps needs an active data connection -- be it WiFi or a data plan from Rogers -- in order to guide you through the maps. Caching just takes an instant of the map/area you want, and allows you to view it while you are offline. Without a data connection, though, you won't be able to, say, search for a specific address, look for restaurant/gas station/touristic attraction or get directions. If that is what you are looking for, you might be interested in another GPS navigation app.

Thanks guys, the patch worked wonders!
I wonder if there is a fix for those that don't root, because doesn't that take away one of the key functionalities of the phone? Was this addressed in jelly bean?
It looks like the GPS is working wonderfully for some people, but awfully for others. I had no problem with the GPS when I was on stock Gingerbread. I did not stay long enough on stock ICS to tell if the problem started when I upgraded, I went pretty quick to CM9 nightly, and I had the GPS to work not so good. Applying this patch was like night and day, now the GPS is working great.
So no, I'm not sure that this patch will make its way into a stable ROM -- in your case, Rogers' stock ROM. You may want to take a look at Rogers Community Forum and ask if someone had problem with the GPS. If a lot of people report GPS malfunction to Rogers, Rogers might consider patching its ROM.
And about your other question: I don't think there is a way to patch the GPS on an unrooted phone. This patch write/replace a system file, which means you have to have root access to apply the modifications.

Technically u don't need a rooted phone, merely a custom recovery on Samsung based devices, which u can flash via Odin, and reflash stock after but yes, in principle u are correct. U cannot use it with a non-stock phone

Most of them require root permissions or a custom recovery (CWMR) to install.
Hope this benefits SOMEBODY, I spent a great deal of time researching this...

[Q] GPS/Navigation issues

Is anyone else having problems with the gps/navigation on after downloading cm 10.1.2 or any of the updates? For whatever reason whenever I try to use my google nag it seems to work but the gps cannot lock in on my coordinates, I tried using navigon and that app just keeps crashing besides that everything else works perfectly. Any ideas what is going on ?
I always flash the AGPS patch from the dev forum on every ROM I've ever used, and I've never had issues with GPS since doing that. Worth a try.

I would also suggest getting 'GPS Status' from the play store. I have found a few times where the GPS needs a kickstart, and GPS Status does it. Just open up GPS Status, and it will get your location, then go back to maps and it will nail it.

I used to do this too when I mixed up giving google apps permission to use GPS with enabling google ads. I simply refused to read that text about google apps and gps and assumed it was google ads lol. Wow did I feel stupid when I finally enabled GPS access for google apps and got that fast GPS again... I felt really stupid dumb :silly:
EDIT:
I've had issues with AGPS patch here in Sweden. When using the correct patch for this region it locks in about 1-2 seconds with an error in two whole kilometers and stays that way for 5-10 minutes after which it starts jumping between the correct location and a 1.5 kilometer error. AGPS patch is really obsolete and useless for me as GPS works flawlessly without it.
Premature celebration
seems I celebrated a bit prematurely, I got the gps working a bit when I patched the location fix however the main problem is still here. That being that the directions are give, my location is found however the actual route guidance just hangs. My location is shown, if I choose the turn by turn list all the correction instructions are give but for some reason the route guidance just hangs. I am now going to try reinstalling stock rom to see if it is a rom issue. Hope someone out there knows of a fix without having to flash back to stock I really like cm 10.1.2
