Sensation issues.. - HTC Sensation

Srry for the cheesy title, but it's all i can think of atm.
I'm new to the Android world (Sensation 4G TMOUS being my first phone; owned for about a month) - using it on ROGERS on 2G atm until i can switch to an appropriate AWS carrier.
So anyways, my phone's rooted and has the Android Revolution HD 1.1.7 ROM flashed, but despite this, it's suffering from occasional lag and has some other certain issues such as it will randomly hang and i have to do a hard reset (battery removal) for it to function again... this is getting really frustrating because of how random the issue is. I tried the no-sense script, but that still hangs as well. Could this have to do with the kernels or something? I flashed the right radio for 1.1.7, but am not entirely sure what part the kernel plays and how it affects things.
It also at times when put on standby, fails to power on (rarely but it does occur); as in when i press the power button, the 4 buttons at the bottom light up, but there's nothing on the display... followed by them staying on for a few seconds before turning off again.
Just this morning (for the first time), when i unplugged the phone from the charger, it was burning hot.. and by hot i don't mean warm, but actually uncomfortable to hold - had to do a hard reset for it function again after which it gradually cooled down.
Another thing i wasn't too sure about is "trace". How come i can use trace in the "messages" app, but not in the browser/facebook etc. What's up with that ?
It's really frustrating that i'm stuck with the catastrophe that is lag.. once again (coming from a Nokia N95) and honestly at times i feel really disappointed in the decision i made when choosing a new phone.. it seems. I mean not only does the competition beat us in benchies/day-to-day tasks, but this horrid lag issue is really taking the Sensation right outta the contest.
I've contemplated creating a new thread about this, but wasn't sure because a lot of these issues have been discussed, but i had not heard of this dead-on-standby issue plus the fact that i sorta wanted to rant a little bit and thought instead of flooding the forum with multiple threads, why not make one big one. In any case i apologize if this is frustrating for anyone, but all i'm looking for is some help. Thank you.

It looks like these are the issues with newest ARHD. For speed try InsertCoin 2.3.4 (or RCMIX 2.3.4, they're basically the same). Probably the fastest Sense ROM
Swyped from my HTC Sensation

The problems you have, have been mentioned many times in the ARHD thread. It's a kernel issue. Try flashing another kernel like the unity kernel.

Thing is i'm really contemplating exchanging the phone for another (Galaxy SII preferably), but i'm not sure if this lag issue and other minor hiccups are gonna be a regular occurence or not.
If i'm going to sell it.. i have to sell it now when it has some sort of value in the market and not say in a few months by when perhaps cyanogenmod is already out and the price of the phone has dropped.
What would you guys do ?

You want to exchange the phone because of an issue with CUSTOM Rom/Kernel (except the lag, it also happens on stock). At least try stock/other Rom/kernel before that.

Download the latest ARHD 1.1.8 and many of these issues should be over.

Stock is worse..
@DiZzle.
Yea i'll give that a try. Thanks.

I had similar issues and went back to stock ROM with ADW launcher. I tried various kernels etc. but gave up. 1.1.8 might be better, can't comment on it though. I think that 1.1.8 was going to revert to stock kernel btw. I also used a ROM cleaner to remove a lot of bloatware.
I'm just waiting for CM7 on my Sensation.

Just hang on and follow how fast the custom rom scene is evolving right now.
I guess for kernel issues we gotta wait until there's a proper kernel source available

Say Hello to a Confused and Recent HTC Convert

I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!
hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).
What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.
Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.
Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).
hello_______
GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.
came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Curious because I'm considering returning the captivate for the aria (other than the Screen the Captivate Really Kinda Sucks). If you had it to do again would you pick the Aria over the Captivate?

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.
rant over.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

From Inspire to Atrix back to Inspire :D

I really enjoyed the Inspire but I started to get all crazy reception issues where I couldnt make a call or receive sometimes. Anyone else having these issues? Someone at the att store said alot of ppl are complaining of this.
Yesterday I exchanged for the atrix and it felt a lil bit more snappy, nothing to wow me but I could make calls and receive, no issues at all. My main issue was it would hardly charge on usb from any pc I used, and it would get really hot trying so right there I said, this is going back. In less than 24hrs I was back at the AT&T store to get a new inspire.
I really dont want to have any reception issues, and I almost believe all the flashing roms, radios, kernels, I messed something up along the way. Heck, Im even scared to root now. I want to use the phone totally stock and make sure it works great whereever I am before I root even. I'm also wondering if rooting causes battery to drain quicker.
So I ask all you experienced Android users/developers. Am I right in believing that all the flashing I've done might of messed my reception? Even maybe rooting might have messed something up? If not, is there a way to make a complete backup right now, so I can go right back to this when I do begin to root and what not. I almost feel like the stock rom, when I went back to it and unrooted before I returned the last inspire made no difference. The new Inspire seems to hold a better signal now. So can I back up the current stock rom before I do anything?
Interested to hear what advice this drums up. I went from Atrix (painfully bad PenTile LCD, shamelessly locked down) to Inspire back to my old N1 because I got a few days of no signal and missed calls in the office. I read recently that there's some sort of leaked magical radio that fixes a lot of the issues, so I'm keeping an eye towards the Inspire. $20 at Costco is a worthy use of my contract upgrade.
Yeah, there are other phones coming down the pike. I'm stuck with AT&T and given this is an otherwise solid phone and how awesome HTC tech support has been with my N1 I don't want to go with another mfr. Also Optimus 3D has only 512MB RAM? WTF?
If you have patience, your issues will be ironed out. Inspire ROMs and development is still kind of early.
If you just be patient, GPS...reception....bugs....will all be a thing of the past. Both devices are excellent. HTC build quality and 'openness' is something to envy. Just relax, I think you made a wise choice.
Just out of curiosity, what rom were you running when you started having issues? I'm on stock with root and have yet to have any problems with gps or reception.

nailed my main problems right there (in bold)...
Nice to see you lingering in the inspire forums DG
I purchased the Inspire the day it came out and absolutely loved it. That one had major issues with the screen. It would not register my touch about 80% of the time. So I exchanged that one for another Inspire and the second one had all sorts of problems. Dropped calls, calls no received, no VM notification, random reboots, and of course the always popular, locked phone that required a battery pull.
At that point I just thought the Inspire was not that great of a phone so I exchanged for the Atrix. When the phone arrived I knew two seconds after it booted that I hated the phone. It felt cheap, it was tiny, and Motoblur reminded me too much of TouchWiz - which is a shame because the guts of the phone should have made it a monster but Moto has a long way to go with their Motoblur. Within 2 hours of getting the Atrix I took it back.
So, I am on my third Inspire and so far so good. No missed calls, dropped calls, texts, no reboots, no locks, no problems at all. Right now I am rooted running the stock rom. I have tried a few different roms - RCMiXHD_v5X, LeeDroid_HD v2.2.2, and Android Revolution 4G. I had GPS issues with LeeDroid and Revolution and data problems with RCMiXHD. The phone has performed pretty dang good with root+Stock so I will probably keep it that way. Hopefully a GB version will drop soon because I do like the extra features that brings.
Anyway, thats just my experience.
This thread is getting some good information placed in it, and a good OP as well.
My recommendation is that you follow the hack kit, but stick to ROMs based off of the Stock Inspire ROM for now. As much as I enjoy a UV/OC kernal, I can't say it's making a huge impact in my day-to-day use of this phone. I'm running AR 3.2, without any issues right now on the stock inspire radio, but my next flash will probably be a ROM like ClearDroid.
I also wish we had an easy stock backup procedure, but as far as i know we're stuck with the reflash + s-off combo.
As a side note: Where the heck did DG come from?! It's good to see you popping your head in here. I started with your Super-rooter and lived on Cognition and Perception for my Captivate.

Im not sure which rom was the culprit, I dont want to bad mouth anyones work as it could of just been my doing and I definitely appreciate the hard work and effort the devs put in. I cant really recall as battery life hasnt been a huge issue for me on the inspire, but for everyone that has rooted their phone, would you say battery life improved or worsened? I'm probably going to root later on tonight.
Oh and why no 'one click' root/unroot scripts for the Inspire yet? Just wondering, because even the atrix had a one click root script.

Yeah I meant more of a legit release not a leaked version. I have tried RCMix and Adroid Revolution and had issues with both. Nothing major but enough for me to go back to stock.
I'm having an oposite dilemma.. I first bought the Atrix and then after i noticed a little lag when unlocking the device i bought the Inspire.. I had the Atrix for 2 weeks and i have had the Inspire for 1 week.
What i have noticed about the Inspire is that when I try to open a .doc file thats only 62kb large, its not nearly as smooth as the Atrix with the scrolling and double tapping to zoom in. I dont know why this is... 62kb is pretty small. When i had the Atrix, it opened the same file super fast and there was no lag at all..
Also, with websites like adultswim and phonedog which has a lot of flash, the Inspire lags quite a bit compared to the Atrix which has little to no lag.
Im very tempted to go back to the Atrix and just live with the little bit of lag when unlocking.. IDK what i should do..

Well good luck in your decision. I dont doubt the Atrix was a tad faster at some things left stock, but that wasnt a main concern for me as I know on the Inspire a rom here a kernel there can remedy that.
I've actually opened .doc and .xls files close to that size on a daily basis with no real lag issue. Then again I'm using Documents To Go, app I used from my Blackberry days. Works pretty smoothly.

Well good luck in your decision. I dont doubt the Atrix was a tad faster at some things left stock, but that wasnt a main concern for me as I know on the Inspire a rom here a kernel there can remedy that.

Thats weird cause i used quickoffice to open the .doc and it was really laggy just now, being on the phone at the same time..
Though the Inspire is able the flash roms ....Atrix is by far a better phone. I've played with cousins Inspire, it doesn't compare to my Atrix

I m running the rooted stock rom self-cleaned from the ATT bloat with TiBU in chuck norris mode... No problem with my GPS, no problem with the reception... battery life around one day of pretty intensive use... I notice altough I m not having issues as i mentioned the signal's strength displayed is always pretty low (2/3 on 5)...
I tried ClearDroid but since it was pretty much the same as my 'self-purified' stock i just got back to it...
I don't think the reception's issue was related to the rooting itself... some device is just kinda defective from factory...
In the end it boils down to personal preferences.
I had both and got rid of the Atrix for the Inspire because of screen size and its speedy as is out the box. Don't really see the need for a Dual CoreS unless I'm gonna shell out more cash for the laptop Which I see is pointless since I might as well lug around my Vaio i7. In the end I'm happy with the Inspires build quality and performance.

It depends on your needs/preferences. Specs wise, yes the Atrix might be better but the Atrix does have its issues as well which irked me enough to come back to the Inspire which I liked so much I'm willing to give it a second try. One thing is for sure, I cant see myself getting another Motorola device anytime soon. Been there a few times, and had bad experiences with their locked devices. HTC has been the better experience for me so far and I'm enjoying the Inspire more than I did the Atrix.
Very true about preference...I like the Inspire's size wouldn't want to go bigger. Many hate motor for locking down the BL....but it seems like HTC will be doing the same on future devices

[Q] Does a custom ROM fix reboot issue?

Hello,
I am looking to get this device as a gift. I have a good deal on it and will pick it up later today. My question is will a custom ROM fix any reboot issues? I don't want to give a broken gift.
Thanks!
EDIT: I am told the phone doesn't have any reboot issues, but I am asking just in case.
Thats a hard one to call. If its not having any issues you may be getting a good one and if so its a great gift. What I can say is running customs on mine has helped me not shoot it, run it over and then commence to destroying it. If your worried over it and you have time to use it for a few days maybe thats an option as well.
Either way, good luck
Thanks for the response. I already got her an LG Optimus One (bad idea) and she hates LG phones now (it keeps getting stuck in emergency mode) so I am not sure if I should risk another LG failure.
Every G2X is different... Some have the issue, other's don't. If it doesn't have the reboot issue to start off with, then you shouldn't worry about other ROMs.
Anyway to know if it has the issue or not? The seller says it doesn't but I want to make sure.

Even if it doesn't have reboot issues I'd still consider flashing a different rom. For the most part you'll get better battery life, better stability, and more features with a custom rom than with stock.

Not really sure other than using it. Mine was weird because I'd have reboots on stock sometimes like once or twice a day, and then other times I could go all day or longer with no issues.
But I've had no issues running custom roms.

Take a sim card with you, put it in and boot the phone up. Make sure you get signal. Make a test call, send a text message, browse the web. Another poster on here said he bought a G2X from someone only to get home and realize the seller had screwed up something and the phone had no baseband. No baseband = no phone functionality.

Only rom that has fixed reboot issues with me has been MIUI rom. Not sure why, but I've had it for like two weeks now and nothing yet.
I've tried several others and this is the only one.

Just goes to show everyone's mileage varies. I've used mainly CM7, and Ultimate G2X when i want a froyo rom, and I've had no reboot issues whatsoever with either of them.
G2X CM7
ive had my g2x preloaded with gingerbread when i got it new from tmobiles customer service and it hasnt had one reboot or shut down yet. i do notice some screen leakage but i dont see the big deal about it. its not that bad and u only see it if the screen is all black like using the app "draw!". then turning up the screen to 100% brightness
I haven't heard many issues about reboots running CM7. I think the issue is around the stock OS varieties (some roms are just custom stock roms ie Eagles Blood and Weapon)
Try MIUI and CM7. They both use a completely different Kernel which is where the reboot is caused. My Asus Transformer is a Tegra 2 device and with the wrong kernel (stock) will reboot often. Same applied, the right kernel won't reboot.
MIUI and CM7 both use the CyanogenMod kernel which primarily uses AOSP drivers in the kernel.
Unfortunately your mileage will vary depending on what nightly you are running. Right now I am running the CM7 Nightly from Aug 11th (101 I think?) and I'm actually getting really good battery out of it and it is stable.
Buying a G2x for a GF might borderline being a bad idea. She needs something that just works, and while the G2x will work perfectly under the right conditions, it would require that you would use the phone for a few days to test it before handing it over.
I LOVE the G2x but would have a hard time honestly recommending it for someone who isn't one of us. Like I said, using the right combination of Rom/Kernel the phone is a ROCK and a BEAST but you decide.
One thing that kinda sucks is some apps and games. The LG G2x had a bad start and therefore seems to fall by the way side. Stuff like Skype and some graphical games don't have full support like something a Nexus or Galaxy S has.
Honestly for your GF, I think a Galaxy S 4G would be a great buy, or a Nexus S even. Those are some really mainstream popular phones that will cut down on aggrevation from your GF.
Although most GF's won't be doing anything crazy like that. Just calls, text, facebook, and angry birds.
I love mine and bought it full price new. I also waited around for it and came from a Nexus One, which had support for EVERYTHING. So coming from that to a G2x, having some apps not work without hacking at it or custom tweaks can be annoying, like Netflix has to be downloaded and installed outside of the market to work.

Sensation user here considering going S-Off and rooting, advice?

Alright, so in the past I've owned an HTC HD2 that I was able to Android on by stumbling though the posts here, a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant that I was able to root, albeit slowly and clumsily, and also my fiancee's old HTC Mytouch 3G. It has seemed though that after rooting and flashing a custom ROM on each phone, a few months later, problems begin to arise. The phone will start lagging, freezing, crashing, etc. It becomes unresponsive at times, won't receive or send calls/messages at times, etc. Now, I readily admit that this is most likely my fault due to my inexperience, so this raises my next question.
Should I attempt to go S-off and what not with my Sensation? Is it worth the risk? Could someone walk me though it, like leading the blind lol, as where to I won't make any mistakes?
A little background, I love my Sensation, and I really like the Sense 3.0 UI, though some of the widgets not updating, such as Friend Stream and News, is really rather aggravating.
So, with my history of rooted/custom ROM phones going bad, and my being mostly satisfied with my Sensation, should I bother going S-Off and rooting? Will I notice a great improvement in performance? Do any ROMs out there offer a version of Sense 3.0?
Thanks for you help, it is greatly appreciated,
Signed,
A lost noob
The whole process is easier than the hd2. It's a must for me there are plenty of roms and they all will improve the speed of your device
You can overclock your cpu to 1.5 like the processor was intended to be used. Go in to the development thread and there's a noob guide in stickies, read it a few times and go for it its easy and safe if you follow every step.
Roms are installed from sd via cwm like on the hd2
Get reading if your stuck ill help you the best I can.

Alright, will do, thanks for that.
It'll have to wait a day, I called T-Mobile today to get a replacement phone, as I have dust under my screen, they're sending me a replacement next day air, should arrive tomorrow. That is pretty damn good service if I may say so. Though I have to keep the original back, a shame, as it has a couple nicks that bug me to no end.

Be careful, as I almost rooted my phone two months ago when ROM's started flying around this forum. Thankfully I waited, since I am now on my third replacement Sensation because they have all developed dust under the screen. If you root it, dont expect to be able to return it. You better REALLY like that dusty look if you do!

But you can go back to Stock ROM without root an S-ON. I had to return my device, so I flashed the stock ROM and went back to S-ON. It was no problem at all...

Apart from Revolutionary not working for three times and CWM not installing through Revolutionary everything went fine. If something doesn't work as expected just google it - there is someone out there with the same problem.
I tried a few ROMs and kernels out there and i can strongly recommend Bulletproof due to its stability. The best about it is that it's stock based (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1214023).
It will work even better with the Bricked Kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668) and system tuner of the market. I am using the new 1.2.5 test-kernel (it's unbelievable fast).
There is only a issue with the camera causing an fc. But you can fix it using the sense 3.5 hack from faux: http://www.multiupload.com/7BIGBQTDLF

Yeah, hopefully I don't run into any problems, I'll end up bricking my phone if I do...
As for the ROM, I've been strongly considering Android Revolution HD.
I have never rooted a phone before now. The process was so simple, if you follow the guide correctly. I'm on Android Revolution HD 3.6.2 and loving it. Very fast a stable, no issues or force closing.
Just remember to back up everything.

Total Disappointment

I got to say that even with all of the great development here this phone has been overly disappointing..
This is my Wife's phone I use an SGS II. I was going to keep it stock but she was complaining about it locking up occasionally and poor battery life. So i rooted and have had her try out several roms of several flavors, sense 3.0 and 3.5 gingerbread of all sorts, and different kernels and all.. It seems no matter the combo the general use of the device seem sluggish at times.
Her biggest complaint is how sometimes she needs to pull for the notification bar 3 or 4 times before it will pull down.. Whats crazy is non of these issues are present at first, usually do not show for a few days.
I at first thought it was the set up but after so many mixes of different things i checked that off, then i thought it was an app but i had her go for a few days without installing anything and it eventually still happened..
I have decided it either the device just plain sucks or its the sense garbage clogging it up..
Any good ASOP rom recommendations?
Or any recommendations at all? Maybe someone else who had had issues with this device and who has found happiness could point me in a good rom kernel combo for this POS...
Sorry had to vent.. and any help would be great..
No problems whatsoever on the ROM I'm running. Did you make sure to superwipe in between each ROM flash?

No one else seams to have these problems i get no lag what so ever but if your looking for a good AOSP Gingerbread ROM have you tried Cyanogen Mod 7????? or eve MIUI as far as ICS ROM i like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408351
have you tried swapping/formatting your SD card?
other than that, it sounds like you've tried everything...you may just have a bung handset...your problems are not common
I was having some of the same problems. No matter what Rom/kernel combo I had there were bugs. I went back to stock and voila... Smooth as butter. I guess the updates tmo released really fixed all of the problems I had when I first purchased the sensation. I suggest you try it out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
I have been using sensation for 4+ months now. Yes the stock ROM is buggy but definitely not as bad as you are experiencing. I rooted and install custom ROM after one week stock ROM usage. May be you can try by 1) factory reset if not fixed then 2) format or new memory card.
All Gingerbread based ROM's are pretty good in terms of feature, performance and stability. For starters you can try insertcoin or android revolution HD. I would not recommend ICS based ROM since they are still work in progress kind of mode. Though most of the things will work with ICS ROM, looking at your frustrating experience I would recommend only GB based ROMs.
All The Best!
Faulty handset.
Get it replaced/fixed.
Never have I experienced any of these issues with my Sensation.
I use ARHD 3.6.x since day 1 and it's still as smooth as butter.
I use Daemon controller to take the CPU down to 1GHz.
I have many many apps installed and have nearly filled the internal memory with a few apps on the SD too.
I have removed a few system apps using root. What accounts are you using on the device? I have heard that a sense account can be a bit of a drain on battery and resources.

I think because her nails are long
I had a lot of sluggishness with stock but now I'm using MIUI and it's really smooth and is better on batt life w/o all that stock bloat nonsense. I don't know why I waited so long to root. Every now and then I have issues pulling the status bar but I figure it's just my finger placement or another app is running a task and hogging the CPU for a sec.

Thank you guys for so many responses im going to have her try an ASOP rom like CM7 and see if it helps if not maybe ill get it replaced..

I really think that you guys are just used to a less than smooth experience. and i don't mean this in a bad way. I have not only been exposed to my wife's Sensation but the weird dude upstairs Sensation >though its stock< is slow and choppy and has horrible battery life as well.. just saying its bad when when you take her G2 running a sense 3.0 rom and put it next to the Sensation running a similar rom and the older device is running it better..
OK, So after trying out the CM7 build and now Hypersensation I am going to say even without waiting <but the next few days will tell> sense is what really hinders this phones performance. Totally 1000% more responsive than ANY Sense rom i have had on this device.. still not up to par where i feel it should be but much nicer..
Ok if shes still in cm7 just leave it dont overclock it. Give it a few charges to settle. Everything should work smooth except the video camera. Glad i could help u.

If she doesnt like cm7 give the latest miui a go. Everything works great. Only bug ive noticed is the wifi likes to turn on by itself once in awhile so keep an eye on it if u try miui. Ive came over from a nexus s and comparing both phones id say the sensation is a hair better plus the build quality is much much better.
