how far are we from permanent root??

Be patient

I would say no closer than the day the update rolled out. Temp root has been found but that in no way indicates permanent root will be found or will be in any way the same process as the temp root.

Seems to me our best bet is to pray that HTC will unlock it themselves through their new policy change and HTCdev.com - but they still haven't announced that the Shift will be receiving the same "official" unlock as the Evo and 3D.
I'm notably bummed. One of the major reasons I left behind my Milestone was Motorola's eFuse, and that was even fairly hackable. HTC until very recently has been so hack-friendly! What gives, I ask. Pressure from the cellcos, perhaps?

You guys are aware that revolutionary has been tested on most phones and may be released soon right? with shift being on the list of supported.

I think when you drop by and make a post that says "shift is included " or "shift is next" post a link to who, what,or where.

Another OTA?

So tmonews.com just announced another update for the 4g. http://www.tmonews.com/2010/11/android-phone-updates-galore/
I wonder if the mytouch 4g update is the second update or if its the first one that many of us got in the first few days of owning the device. Any one know?
Damnit I still haven't gotten the first one!

Personally, I would wait for CM or another rom to come out. Video chat will probably be optimized (among other things) in those roms anyway and there is no telling what this will do to root. It may "fix" root and plug up the exploit so that you are back at square one again.

It's the same update we know about.
I would love cm on here but I hope there will be some way to keep the genius button. That's one piece of bloat ware that I love. I heard someone with a g2 had it on their rooted device so maybe a easy to add it to our custom ruins when they come out?

I was wondering about that also. If it was to plug a hole, it will become evident if those with the 2nd OTA find that the s=off and/or the rooting itself procedures no longer work. And then there is tethering....
Would TMo be that mean ???
If you make a backup using Clockwork, could you just reflash to get back to where you were if the new OTA takes away root?
If it's just a Qik update, can Qik from the new version be pulled from it and then installed on a phone without the newest OTA?
no because you need root to nandroid your phone
Only one update. If you have 2.2.1 thats the update for qik and some bugs; I got the email from HTC in their monthly news email.

[Q] How will HTC unlocking bootloaders affect our phones

Guys, I've read it about 50 times in the past 24 hrs - MAYBE HTC will re-consider their bootloader locking policy. My question is very simple - HOW WILL IT AFFECT PHONES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN PURCHASED???? Will we get S-OFF too? How?
i don't think it will affect desire and incredible s, they are too old now and the main buying hype is already in the past
dunno if htc cares so much about them to unlock

This announcement has obviuosly been SCRUBBED by HTC legal. They just created a ****ton of loopholes for themselves, and gave themselves a LOT more time. We need to realize that the way they worded this sets it up to where we'll have to accept OTAs BEFORE the whole 'unlocking capability' is updated.

I totally agree with the quoted post above. Their statement is pure Legalese. To me this just sets up the scenario where a portion of the globe is given first the ability to unlock the boatloader and then sometime later the ability to use the capability to unlock the boatloader. No real precise time frames for either one. HTC states that The US Senation 4g is to follow with no real time frame and then sometime perhaps in latter part of Sept the capability to use the unlock boatloader update. They also did not mention which year, I am betting on Dec 12 of 2011.

My problems must have been user error, the power button was sticking and it was recessed into the phone, another one had a messed up audio jack, the next had the same issue and this one has the audio jack issue as well just not as bad and this new one also has random reboots even on the new OTA GB radio, the last three only had reboots on froyo radios.

They'll unlock the bootloader to the evo 3d and sensation but not the tbolt. Their unlocking tool will require you to provide them with your device information to void your warranty. Only good I see is developers might be able to use the tool to unlock other devices like the tbolt and future devices without having to provide htc with any of your phones information.

On top of that from what I have been reading it is somewhat limiting when compared to s-off. No hboot, radio, or splash1 flashing. Last I heard kernels had to be fastbooted on. There is probably more I don't know about. Voids your warranty and you can't even switch around to find what radio works best for you. Unlocked my a$$!!

[Warning] OTA Rumor/RUU download

This is a prewarning for anyone still nieve enough to accept an ota before its been torn down and examined. The One X, brother device(EVO 4g LTE) recently received an ota that SIGNIFICANTLY improved security on the device. Changes included a new hboot(as seen in the new hox ruu leaked) along with other patches, any EVO that was not previously s OFF can no longer use the s OFF exploit, lazypanda. On top of that, EVO and hox were both able to flash radios and kernals with the unlocked bootloader. The EVO, s on with unlocked bootloader can NO LONGER flash radios or kernals. Recoveries only. I am posting this to make the community aware that this update WILL most likely implement the same security changes that were put on EVO LTE owners.
If you accept the ota, you will likely:
Lose ability to flash kernals, and radios
Lose ability to use a s OFF exploit if it becomes available on the current(non updated) hboot.
Do thank the person bringing the ruu leak to xda for developers to examine and warning us of the soon to come ota. If it weren't for him, it would just show on our devices and a good percentage would accept, clogging our forums with help me threads. Check out the ruu leak thread to thank.

Not talking about devs, who contribute something to the overall environment (I would never refer to devs as "clowns"). I'm talking about the people who start fooling around with their phones without knowing what they're doing, brick them, then post things like "Will AT&T know what I did if I return this for a warranty replacement?"
And, whether the carriers can afford it (they can) isn't the point. It's that these folks motivate the carriers to make their phones ever more locked down in order to avoid having to deal with these bogus exchanges.
Wait, you got that wrong, reason we are getting more bricked phones is because the security on this device is NEW. Can't figure it out if you don't try, trying consists of trial and error. Well you know the sweetest of the story....
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
For every guy that takes a risk and flashes something that might achieve s off, 10 people have returned their phone because the email doesn't work, or the screen is too yellow, or its too quiet.. or loud. Do you see what I'm sayin?
Normal people don't root.. they just complain. So HTC locking down the phone more isn't preventative measures for tech support or return rates... Its just HTC being sloppy. Next it'll be that source is being delayed because they don't want people to brick their phones lol

Thanks, good looking out. Some people will heed your warnings, others wont. I'm afraid this would be a little harder to overcome than the 1.85 fiasco when everyone updated before there was a root exploit. Maybe google will open Motorola up. HTC is goin backwards

Yeah, it's definitely a concern to me. I wish they would understand and just make it easy to do. The unlock site.could have an optional S-off to go with it. I would think it would be pretty easy for these guys to design a device to be very dev friendly, and also easy to recover if/when things go bad.
