After updating to 3.2, I noticed that the touch screen has a ton of bugs. I used this program to check the inputs (I can't post links now due to forum restrictions):
Multitouch visible test
Basically if I scroll from far left to far right (Asus logo on the top left of my view), there is always a cutoff somewhere on the screen.
I never or hardly ever notice this problem when I'm in 3.1.
Any ideas on how to fix the problem? Or is it just 3.2 that has this and I should go back to 3.1?
Help is totally appreciated. Thanks!
Update:
Sent in the TF to Asus (to Ontario Canada) on August 9, 2011
Received it back from Asus on August 29, 2011 via UPS
Problem: they only reloaded the OS and did NOT test the touch screen so I have the exact SAME problem... Requesting RMA again
Can you grab a video of the issue?
Plonk it on youtube and then stick the url on here.
Cheers
Video is at youtube:

Basically a portion of the screen does not respond to touch, and the classic turning screen on and off does not fully solve this problem.
had this problem before 3.2.
my screen have only small places..quarter of inch, random places.
noticed this only after rooting. and with some kernels more than others.
have you rooted?
No root. All stock since I am too lazy to do anything other than install apps, view video and manga.

Quality vid there, top notch.
Have you tried a hard reboot?
And a restore to factory default settings?
For some reason that sounds sarcastic there... but the video was taken by a Desire HD so it's not that good quality. It conveys the point (I hope).
Haven't tried hard reboot or factory default settings because that would mean I have to reinstall stuff and re-setup things like gmail.
Lol dude, i wasnt being sarcastic, for some reason i was expecting some half-assed effort.
Hard reset shouldnt wipe your data.
Hard Reset:
Unplug the power cord and shut the unit off and Press and Hold the power button and the "Down" volume button together for 6-10 seconds and let them both go. After a few seconds you should see a couple of shapes in the middle of the screen called "Wipe Data" and "Android". Wait a few more seconds until the term "Cold Boot" appears in the list near the top of the screens and just press and release the "Down" volume button again and let it reboot. If you own the dock be sure and do this with the dock connected.
Sorry man, I guess my sarcasm detector is pretty off today.
I tried the hard reset and the same problem persists. I will have to see how this can be fixed though (I see that many people have similar problems though).
Thanks for your help =)
might be worth giving asus a tinkle and see what they say.

I just started having this "bug" yesterday. Basically, what happens (randomly) is that when I press the power button, remove the stylus, or slide the phone open to wake it up I'll be met with a black/blank screen. The backlighting will be on, and the phone is responsive (can receive messages, make calls, sounds/notifications work), but I won't be able to use the screen. If I use the power button to turn the screen back off and wait a few seconds, the screen might start working again. This is completely random and I cannot duplicate it with any guaranteed process, but it seems to be when the phone is waking up from standby. After a soft reset, probably half of the time I'll be met with this same delima, which leads me to believe it's hardware and not completely software.
At the same time the phone is also struggling to re-paint the screen from the change of Landscape-to-Portrait and visa versa. Also opening and closing windows to get back to the today screen also cause a problem. I've disabled TF3D to see if that makes a difference, it doesn't. I have a blank today screen with no plugins to free up the system resources, and am still having this issue.
I'm using JD's Rom (probably around 1.3, it's been running fine with no issues up to this point).
I'm also using S2U2 1.35 (if that makes any difference, haven't had any problems until recently)
The phone has never been dropped, it's in InvisibleShield, and normally sits on my desk charging all day.
This started happening last night for no apparent reason and it's really starting to irratate me.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Re the black screen:
Sounds like its software related. For example, I sometimes have this if I leave PocketTwit in the foreground and turn off phone. What software did you install yesterday? Also, do you try to press the home key and see if that clears the screen?
After more testing..
After some more fiddling around with the phone I'm about 90% certain it's a hardware issue. I noticed that when I slide the keyboard out if the slide portion is past the number line then the screen will stay on, but not update. I don't know how well I can explain it. If I'm typing and hold the screen to keep it from opening all the way then I can see the letters/words appear (in txt msg/email), but if I let the screen goes and it slides all the way open then the screen will stay on and only show what has already happened, any more typed characters will not appear, but if I move the screen back to the number row then the screen will re-draw and update what has happened.
Is this something that Sprint should fix no questions asked?

The last piece of software I installed was Gyrator 2 on Friday-ish. Thinking that it was the problem, I removed it using MemMaid. I'm going to give the phone a flash tonight and see if it is software related (hoping for the easy fix) but as the post above says, I'm almost certain it's a hardware issue. I just wish I knew how it happened. . . So much for that time putting those InvShld on.
Final Update (this can be closed)
I took it into a Sprint store and they replaced the "flip" on the top for free (I have insurance).
Point of the story/thread, this can be closed, it was a hardware issue, and now it's fixed.
Hello, I have recently discovered a very annoying problem with the touchscreen on my Motorola Defy:
I have noticed that the touch screen acts strange sometimes, so I have installed a touch test application(Touchtest by Hermit). In this application I have noticed that if I touch the screen in two different points in a fast succession, a line appears between these two dots. This makes a lot of application that require multitouch pretty much useless, because I have to restart the application to have the touch screen working again.
Is there any solution for this? I have heard that this may be a software issue, so I have e-mailed Motorola, but they have not answered yet.
I have attached two pictures to illustrate what I am saying, one taken before this strange error, and one after pressing on two spots very fast. You can see the line connecting the dots in the second picture. I can make a video if you still can't figure out what I am saying.
Thank you.
Im having a very similar problem here on my defy. When I play games on psx4droid and when I keep pressing x key, it stops working for a while then I have to release the button and when I press it again, it stops working and it continues
I encounter similar problems with my Defy.
When for instance using slide to unlock , 1 / 5 sildes fails. I have to slide 2 - 3 times until it unlock.
It also scrolls very slow in applications and the same thing happens when typing a message.
Solution : Unse lock button.
It currently runs Pays ROM, but the situation appeared since I installed 2.2.1.
I don't remember having this problems on 2.1.
Don't know if the situation is only related to software but it is really annoying.
Found this info regarding touchscreen slowness, but I am using the original charger so it doesn't apply for me.
Motorola Defy Touchscreen Problem
I recently got my Motorola Defy,my Defy's touchscreen acts sometimes really weird, on keyboard it's hard to enter 'r' or 'b' and some other characters, it takes little while to unlock the phone, it automatically opens applications, I don't know if it's due to faulty handset or software, I am considering it returning to Phone4U and get a replacement handset.
What version of Android are you using ?
Same problems here, but I think it is a software issue.
I'm having the same problem on my Defy.
After a while, the multi touch stops. I posted on the Motorola Forums
https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/44733
but no response.
I used YAMTT and when having two touches, after 20 seconds, one of them disappears
This is repeatable
2.51.1 UK with 2.1 Android
Well, it is clear that this is a problem that affects many Motorola Defy users. But I wonder if someone could fix this thing?
Looks like the new software version 2.51.1 did not fix this bug. I haven't tried it yet, but I see some of you have.
So it looks like our only solution could be a developer from XDA. Could someone help please?
This is ridiculous...i've sent my phone to motorola only because it was giving this problem and basically what i think is that their own software is causing this problem so i'll be waiting for 3 weeks and when i get my defy...it'll still have that problem...Ridiculous...
I did a bit more experimenting.
I flashed the 2.2 Finnish blur, multitouch still disappears after 20 seconds using the touch testing programs
I also booted into Safe Mode (vol up + vol down during boot)
The same problem persists; I was using gallery image zoom to test.
However, I got my friend who has a Motorola Droid to install YAMTT. The multitouch lasted about 30-40 seconds. Not sure what to make of that. He's running some version of Cyanogen Mod on Android 2.3

I was messing around today and even the single touch disappears after a while
30 seconds or so
Mine sometime stop response after few seconds

Tell me who is on stock rom and is having problem..because im on 2.2 leaked..so i cant really say if u hv this problem on 2.1...
I got this response from a Motorola employee. Anyone know of a way around this?
Motorola Employee said:
If you touch the screen and don't move for a long time, the screen will eventually try to ignore that touch as it'll be considered invaild. That's what you're seeing. If you continue to move your finger(s), touch will continue to work. Also, when you release the screen, it acts to clear the invalid touch region that you generated earlier.

somebody please help us. I am also having this weird problem. Touchscreen gets pressed itself not everytime but it happens very frequently. Tried everything, hard reseted too.
At least I gotta hope that its not a hardware problem as many of u are also facing this problem. Any body please confirm if flashing cm7 has helped u or any other solution.

i returned my defy months ago but what you can do is, try to flash cyanogenmod on your defy...that should fix the problem.
Hi, I've registered myself just a minute ago, reading the link that efpod left here and I've remembered that I charged my Defy with a Galaxy S i9000 charger friday (I've charged it once the batery was drained later with my original charger) and today it is failing A LOT, it's really anoying.
I got Cyanogen Mod (latest) installed on my phone so that doesn't fix the problem.
I'm uncharging it with "StabilityTest - CPU / GPU Test" and when the battery drains out I'm gonna charge it with the original one, after that, I'll test it during the day and I'll leave a messege to keep you informed.
Naturally I bought a g Tablet Saturday and Woot has them today for almost $100 less! Oh well. Big big big improvement from my old FlyTouch2 which was a great idea poorly executed.
Immediately flashed VEGAn with supplements etc. All working VERY well but a few questions/observations.
1) If I wanted to hook this up to a USB or Bluetooth modem (well, actually a BlackBerry) it looks like there is no setup for this? Yes, I know if I could find a way to make the BB broadcast WiFi but its corporate so that's a nonstarter.
2) When I hold down the power button, the menu that comes up it clipped off at the bottom. Is that normal?
3) Screen lock on Kindle software is not getting the accelerometer fix somehow. The trick was to put the thing in portrait UPSIDE DOWN and lock the screen. That caused it to lock it 180 degrees off. But then when it is locked you can go back to right side up (to me, right side up is with the buttons to the top). Of course, if you want to lock it another way you have to experiment.
4) Camera Fun shows camera upside down. No big deal -- again accelerometer I think.
5) Sometimes I am sure the machine is asleep and when I turn it on it is booting from the birds screen. Anyone else seeing this?
6) I don't understand the .nomedia thing although I've read a lot about it. I don't seem to get files erased, but nothing shows up in Video. But if I navigate to the folder (on /mnt/sdcard2) and play videos that's fine. Then later the files will show up in video. Whoops spoke to soon. Now they are gone. What's up with that?
7) My old tablet had GPS but without the external antenna it was worthless. But it still managed to find rough location with WiFi somehow. I assume by figuring out the geographic location of the IP. That doesn't seem to work on this machine. Yes Use Wireless networks is checked in Location and security.
8) What's with the little plastic cover? How hard is it to take out? I don't want a little rubber dingle rolling around inside.
8) In System Preferences, About Device | Status consistently crashes.
9) Does the audio jack support a headset or just headphones? Yeah I know -- I could just try it.
If it matters I'm using Launcher Pro.
Still and all the VEGAn ROM is superb. Compared to the FlyTouch this is super fast, the screen is a joy, and the battery life wonderful. And with the woot deal only about $80 more than a FlyTouch2.
Ok I'll answer some of my own questions:
5) I think this is the unresponsive power button problem. If you press and wait it seems ok. If you press, get impatient and press again you might reboot.
9) No, at least not with a Blackberry headset.
Most of these are answered on the forum somewhere, but I'll give it a shot..

Known issue.
These aren't much help (maybe reassurance?)
1) Pretty sure it's wifi only. Have trawled the internet looking for a usb or bluetooth alternative because wifi hammers the phone battery
2) It happens on mine as well, so it's not just you
5) Same here - I just turn it off when not in use now
7) Only GPS functionality seems to come with the need for an external GPS unit
8) Think this is normal
(Re reading above, it looks like I'm negative re VEGAn - this is not the case. It is way better than what came standard and does everything I need it to do)
Yeah I like it too. Haven't tried the others, but very satisfied with Vegan.
Another observation: Long pressing the Menu button (hardware) brings up the keyboard. However, long pressing the menu button on the status bar does NOT have that behavior.
Clemsyns newest kernel will fix sleep issues. Also has some other great improvements too.
Buttons on status bar do not respond to long presses. Home doesn't bring up its usual long press of recent apps either. Funny, i Never even tried long press on status bar keys before now.

I have Pershoot's kernel. I'll try changing. I presume I shouldn't need to clear too many things in CWM after flashing a kernel. Maybe the Dalvik cache?
I had issues with my Asus TF700t that quite often it did not react on touch gestures.
And on the home screen the "change backround" dialog opened sometimes without any touch on the device.
This happend very very often when it was in the dock, but also without the dock (less occurence).
Now i know that the reason are ghost touches. By the usage of touch test apps (e.g. "Simple Touchscreen Tester" oder "Yet Another MultiTouch Test") i realized the ghost touches.
This touches are recognized always on the same coordinates. The multitouch test app detects 4 fingers on the same y-axis.
When the tab is in the dock and i open it completely to the maximum the two bolts from the dock are pressing very strong to the background of the screen glass. This is causing the ghost touches.
I opened the tab and tried to find what could be wrong (especially on the area where the touches are detected).
Anyhow i could not find anything. The only thing i noticed was the on the y-axis of the ghost touches the screen is fixed on the left and the right.
I check everything else closed the case ... but the ghost touches are still present.
Any idea how to fix the issue??? Who else realized the same issue???
Attached some screen shots from the touch test apps.

Yeah, I just got mine back from warranty digitizer recalibration.

Another TF700T here that just returned from RMA with digitizer repair. Went very smoothly for me and I have a TF700T that again works extremely well.
Do they replace parts or just recalibration? Is it possible to so this myself?
I have unlocked bootloader and i do not know if they will repair it without any problem. Any experience on this?
Hi,
First, sorry for my english...
Second, I have same problem since saturday 24 august with my TF700T. Buy november 2012.
I tried to updated to android 4.2 But it didn't solve my pb.
I try "Multi Touch test" app and I observed same problem than mr_cg. Thanks for your good description "Ghost touch"

If you are root, you can perhaps try this app:
ILITEK Touch Utility
or
(less chance i think, it did for S2,S3) TouchScreenTune
Me i am not root, but if it is working for you, perhaps i will try to be.
Thanks for your help

Thanks for the hint. I tried the apps, but both do not solve my issues.
ILITEK ... descriptions sounds good, but unfortunately not working (i get always "access denied" even i have root for sure).
TouchScreenTune ... Based on description it should be also good tool to reduce/improve situation with ghost touches. Anyhow ... it is not working with TF700t.
I am just thinking if i should open the case again???
If with root permissions you don't find solution ... I think i should call Asus support for my first RMA..

Thanks for your return. I win a lot of time.
Same issue
I'm having the same issue here, but only when docked. Seems like I'll stop using the dock since I am out of waranty because I unlocked the bootloader ...:S
I've been having a similar issue very badly on the right side of my screen, it was practically unusable. I am also out of warranty because I'm unlocked. What I did to make it at least somewhat usable was go into the build prop and change my max touch screen events from 200 to 4, and changed my touch sensitivity from .001 to 1 (this setting may have only been available on CROMI. Anyway, now my touchscreen doesn't work on the right side, however it does work everywhere else, and most importantly I can still use the tab as a laptop in its dock. It's a bumm it doesn't work right, but it's better than a total loss!
Sorry guys, it is a failed design problem due to connection to the touch screen. see my post in the "so i took it apart" thread.
Cost me a ruined lcd screen to figure it out

What a great thread! Thanks, I've posted this elsewhere but having just send my TF700 back to ASUS I now have a pretty good idea of what might have been wrong with it. Asus Transformer S/N D20KAS016975
I've struggled with this tablet since purchase in April this year, not being at all familiar with tablets I did not know whether it was just me, the general setup, or the tablet itself at fault. Most certainly the performance is not satisfactory. I have done three 'Factory Resets' and numerous Soft Resets.
Intermittently, the tablet will scroll and flash through various apps, when I open it. Originally File Manager would open itself up, then I got the feeling the Weather app would upset things. Sometimes a browser would make it do the same. Then I tried various Launchers, but the best of them (I think) sometimes shows the menu unannounced. Same thing, on and off until I intervene.
It is also prone to do this just sitting open by itself.
Clearing the caches sometimes fixes this. Sometimes this will stop by itself, other times I need to either close the lid, press the lock button, or turn it off. Then it will be OK.
At times Gmail will scroll randomly through the accounts, messages, labels etc.
Every browser I've tried will sometimes shut itself off, especially if I try to type something into a message box, usually when I've spent some time doing this!
Occasionally I can feel a slight tingling sensation when I'm lightly touching the back of the screen.
One other thing: When left overnight the mouse doesn't work and the tablet needs to be turned off and on again for the mouse to work. I also think the screen doesn't turn off sometimes (can see a light).
At other times the whole thing works just fine.
Hope this helps.

Grant,
Was your tablet still under warranty? Did they charge anything? I wonder if they redesigned the digitizer connection or just put a new screen which will wear out as well. The digitizer connector runs along the bottom left of tablet screen. Same area is being pressed when you close dock, which wears it out.
You can go to developer settings and enable "show touches" (lowers tablet performance) then press on the bottom left edge of the screen, roughly 1/3 point of its length, and see if you get the ghosts to appear.

Yes, still under warranty (problem was there from day 1 although I didn't realise it at the time) and no charge. See attached pdf Customer report. Shows replacement Led panel, & controller board. No sign of ghost touches so far, and really working well actually. Early days yet, but I also note elsewhere in these forums someone mentioned their tablet not working properly 'upside down'. I neglected to mention it earlier but upside down isn't as funny as his respondents made out. I use mine often lying on the couch watching TV, with the tab upside down. Reason I mention it now is that mine acted up in those circumstances too. Anyway, that's fixed too.
Hey all,
Praying you can help as I'm soooo pissed at AT&T. So my wife's Galaxy S6 is only a 4 months old and for the last 2 months she has been dealing with this issue of her phone just randomly switching between apps and programs. For example her phone will just be sitting on the table and we hear a clicking noise (the same noise like when you text) so I look we look at phone and it's switching between messages, pandora, phone list etc. there is not set of apps/programs it chooses them at random. I tried shutting down some apps and no good. I called AT&T and they had me do a factory reset of the phone, no good. Took it to the store and they sent us to the service center for replacement. But when we got there they said there is water damage to the phone so we are SOL. Now i'm pissed, her phone has never been in water. She works at a hospital and when she comes home, all she does is wipe down the phone with a baby wipe and that's it. I tried to explain to them I understand where they are coming from but this is clearly a software issue. They are refusing to help us. I told them I work in the IT field and again it's clearly software issue or a lemon device, but they are hanging their hats on water damage of course.
So my question to you all, is there some way to roll back the software or to jailbreak it to fix this issue?
Has anyone seen or heard of this before?
Lastly I have this on video happening if anyone wants to see it i can text or email it to you.
Sorry so long....Thanks in advance,
Ryan
Sounds like screen issue whereby a portion of the screen believes it's being interacted with. Factory reset may be a good start. Backup anything you need to first of course!
Settings > Backup and a reset > factory data reset. Failing that it's a hardware fault and the vendor should advise where to get the device looked and and repaired. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply yeah we did that and no go. And like I said above they did tell us to go to the service center and they said cause the phone had water damage (which it was never in or around water) that they won't touch it.
You could try this:
Open the dialpad and dial: *#0*# to start "Testmode".
The test "Touch" will test your screen for touch events, just leave it, and see if something happens without you interacting.
Test "Sub key" will test all the hardware keys. The screen will change color if a key is pressed. Again, just leave it and see if the screen change color by itself.
Use doubletap on back-key to get back to menu.
Let us know the results.

Ok I tried what you told me. In "Touch" test the screen is white with a bunch of boxes that form a box with an X in it. I hear the phone clicking back and forth like it does when it's switching between apps/programs, but I do not see them switching on the screen like I normally do. Other than than nothing else happens. If I touch the screen the boxes turn green as I touch them. When I turn all the boxes green it takes me back to the main screen
In "Sub Key" test, the screen turns a mustard color and stays that way. Again I hear the clicking like it is switching between apps/programs but I don't see them I just see the mustard screen. If I hit the back key twice to return to the main menu the screen turns purple and then violet and then takes me back to the main screen
At the main screen, again I hear all the clicking but don't see the apps/programs I just see the main screen that appears after I put in the sequence you gave me.
There are many other options, would any of those help?
Thanks again!!
Ryan
Lastly it seems to happen far more frequently in this mode than when using the phone normally

Mustard color in sub key test means your app switching key (to the left of fingerprint key) is pressed down by itself. If all OK, screen stays black.

OMG awesome!! so now I know what the heck is going on!! thank you sooo much. Now is that something I can get fixed? I had a S4 a few years back and dropped it in water not once but twice. I had to take that phone apart a few times to cover it in rice and to replace a few parts (camera, mic, and antenna). Is this something I can do myself or can take somewhere and have someone do it or am I just SOL?
I would leave it to a pro, but if you feel comfy with disassembly of cellphones and have the right tools, go for it. Let us know how this ends.
