[Q] Ghost touches (especially in dock) with TF700t. How to fix this? - Asus Transformer TF700

I had issues with my Asus TF700t that quite often it did not react on touch gestures.
And on the home screen the "change backround" dialog opened sometimes without any touch on the device.
This happend very very often when it was in the dock, but also without the dock (less occurence).
Now i know that the reason are ghost touches. By the usage of touch test apps (e.g. "Simple Touchscreen Tester" oder "Yet Another MultiTouch Test") i realized the ghost touches.
This touches are recognized always on the same coordinates. The multitouch test app detects 4 fingers on the same y-axis.
When the tab is in the dock and i open it completely to the maximum the two bolts from the dock are pressing very strong to the background of the screen glass. This is causing the ghost touches.
I opened the tab and tried to find what could be wrong (especially on the area where the touches are detected).
Anyhow i could not find anything. The only thing i noticed was the on the y-axis of the ghost touches the screen is fixed on the left and the right.
I check everything else closed the case ... but the ghost touches are still present.
Any idea how to fix the issue??? Who else realized the same issue???
Attached some screen shots from the touch test apps.

Sounds like you have a digitiser hardware issue to me. Had the same on my Surface RT. Only fix was to get it replaced.

Yeah, I just got mine back from warranty digitizer recalibration.
tapatalkin'

Another TF700T here that just returned from RMA with digitizer repair. Went very smoothly for me and I have a TF700T that again works extremely well.

Do they replace parts or just recalibration? Is it possible to so this myself?
I have unlocked bootloader and i do not know if they will repair it without any problem. Any experience on this?

Hi,
First, sorry for my english...
Second, I have same problem since saturday 24 august with my TF700T. Buy november 2012.
I tried to updated to android 4.2 But it didn't solve my pb.
I try "Multi Touch test" app and I observed same problem than mr_cg. Thanks for your good description "Ghost touch"
Ghost disappear when i unplug and re-plug dock, (some time two or three time) but just for some second ...

If you are root, you can perhaps try this app:
ILITEK Touch Utility
or
(less chance i think, it did for S2,S3) TouchScreenTune
Me i am not root, but if it is working for you, perhaps i will try to be.
Thanks for your help

Thanks for the hint. I tried the apps, but both do not solve my issues.
ILITEK ... descriptions sounds good, but unfortunately not working (i get always "access denied" even i have root for sure).
TouchScreenTune ... Based on description it should be also good tool to reduce/improve situation with ghost touches. Anyhow ... it is not working with TF700t.
I am just thinking if i should open the case again???

If with root permissions you don't find solution ... I think i should call Asus support for my first RMA..
snif snif.
Thanks for your return. I win a lot of time.

Same issue
I'm having the same issue here, but only when docked. Seems like I'll stop using the dock since I am out of waranty because I unlocked the bootloader ...:S

I've been having a similar issue very badly on the right side of my screen, it was practically unusable. I am also out of warranty because I'm unlocked. What I did to make it at least somewhat usable was go into the build prop and change my max touch screen events from 200 to 4, and changed my touch sensitivity from .001 to 1 (this setting may have only been available on CROMI. Anyway, now my touchscreen doesn't work on the right side, however it does work everywhere else, and most importantly I can still use the tab as a laptop in its dock. It's a bumm it doesn't work right, but it's better than a total loss!

Sorry guys, it is a failed design problem due to connection to the touch screen. see my post in the "so i took it apart" thread.
Cost me a ruined lcd screen to figure it out

What a great thread! Thanks, I've posted this elsewhere but having just send my TF700 back to ASUS I now have a pretty good idea of what might have been wrong with it. Here's what I posted and what I've told them anyway. I've overlooked the Ghost touches unfortunately, so I will let them know that (if they don't already)......any comments welcome...
Asus Transformer S/N D20KAS016975
I've struggled with this tablet since purchase in April this year, not being at all familiar with tablets I did not know whether it was just me, the general setup, or the tablet itself at fault. Most certainly the performance is not satisfactory. I have done three 'Factory Resets' and numerous Soft Resets.
Intermittently, the tablet will scroll and flash through various apps, when I open it. Originally File Manager would open itself up, then I got the feeling the Weather app would upset things. Sometimes a browser would make it do the same. Then I tried various Launchers, but the best of them (I think) sometimes shows the menu unannounced. Same thing, on and off until I intervene.
It is also prone to do this just sitting open by itself.
Clearing the caches sometimes fixes this. Sometimes this will stop by itself, other times I need to either close the lid, press the lock button, or turn it off. Then it will be OK.
At times Gmail will scroll randomly through the accounts, messages, labels etc.
Every browser I've tried will sometimes shut itself off, especially if I try to type something into a message box, usually when I've spent some time doing this!
Occasionally I can feel a slight tingling sensation when I'm lightly touching the back of the screen.
One other thing: When left overnight the mouse doesn't work and the tablet needs to be turned off and on again for the mouse to work. I also think the screen doesn't turn off sometimes (can see a light).
At other times the whole thing works just fine.
Hope this helps.

Grant

Tablet arrived back this morning and seems all OK. Report indicates they replaced the LCD panel (new) & replaced the touch controller board (also new). And did various tests. Good service I think, no fuss. I'll let you know how it's going in a few days.

Grant,
Was your tablet still under warranty? Did they charge anything? I wonder if they redesigned the digitizer connection or just put a new screen which will wear out as well. The digitizer connector runs along the bottom left of tablet screen. Same area is being pressed when you close dock, which wears it out.
You can go to developer settings and enable "show touches" (lowers tablet performance) then press on the bottom left edge of the screen, roughly 1/3 point of its length, and see if you get the ghosts to appear.

Yes, still under warranty (problem was there from day 1 although I didn't realise it at the time) and no charge. See attached pdf Customer report. Shows replacement Led panel, & controller board. No sign of ghost touches so far, and really working well actually. Early days yet, but I also note elsewhere in these forums someone mentioned their tablet not working properly 'upside down'. I neglected to mention it earlier but upside down isn't as funny as his respondents made out. I use mine often lying on the couch watching TV, with the tab upside down. Reason I mention it now is that mine acted up in those circumstances too. Anyway, that's fixed too.

Sporadic touches in lower right corner

Got my US TF700T couple of days ago. It seems that every few minutes or so it sporadically detects touch in the lower right corner.
It's not exactly the same spot - sometimes it's lower and opens notification bar, sometimes it's higher and usually results either on opening shortcut that is their or clicking on the link in browser. I could not find anything that would cause it.
It seems that someone else reported similar problem in Amazon review.
So does it sound like a defect that requires a return? Does anyone else have the same problem?

I've read about something like that on the tf300t forum if my memory doesn't trick me and that user used a multitouch testing app to caught the issue on video. If a factory restore doesn't solve the issue i would say that asking for a replacement unit is the best way.

i haven't had any "unintended touches" problems on the tablet* but i do sometimes have problems where in that lower right corner it's very hard to get it to register a touch. this seems to be a software problem thoug - as it comes and goes and a cold boot always fixes it (warm boot usually does). i'm hoping when i jump from 21 to 26 (or whatever it is when i have time to do it - auto-update not working, even after CM and DM cold-boot and process kills) it'll "go away".
IMPORTANT: if you experiment with touch sensitivity by bringing your finger close to the screen slowly you'll figure out how damn sensitive it is when you're even still a ways away from touching the glass. it MAY be the fact that your right thumb is creating those unintended sporadic touches. FYI/FWIW/YMMV.
Doody
* the touchpad on the dock/keyboard is HUGE prone to phantom touches - especially from my left thumb. i finally had to turn the touchpad off so i could use the keyboard!

I just upgraded to 26. It seems lot better. Watched a video for an hour and not a single sporadic touch. I actually enabled developer option to show screen touches. I don't see any excessive sensitivity. My issue was purely random and not related to fingers position. I will continue testing with 26 for few days to decide whether it worth keeping the tablet.

Touch screen acting up

The touch screen started to go absolutely bananas this week. To the point of calling ASUS for an replacement.
1st, The screen would make phantom clicks when pressing on the bezel (by the bottom). It would also do the same thing when opening and closing the screen (when connected to the keyboard).
Later, the same day, a 1" strip (top 2 bottom) in the screen lost all touch sensitivity. Could not scroll or type on the on-screen keyboard.
Then, the main area of the screen stopped working (but the bottom tool bar would still work). However, if you removed and reinsert it into the keyboard... It all came back.
Thinking it is a hardware issue, I called Best Buy, then ASUS and requested a replacement. While waiting on hold, I ran "Settings > Backup & rest > Factory Data Reset" and after it reset and lost everything, the problem went away and has been working GREAT! for the last 3 days.
Then today, I found a guy at work says his Nexus 7 had the same problem (un-responsive strip down the middle of the screen). So now I'm thinking it might be a Tegra 3 thing. perhaps a driver issue.
Anyway, I wanted to posting it here in case anyone else is suffering from the same thing.
Your problem sounds like premature hardware failure... I'd get another tablet just to be safe. My touchscreen quirks consist of oversensitivity. When scrolling up and down it'll zoom in and out.. mostly when reading using ezpdf reader, Kindle app, repligo PDF.. its all the same. I'm on my third tf700 by coincidence they've all been C7 's... a touchscreen firmware update is needed or I think I'm going to unlock the paranoid android ROM. It has a touchscreen sensitivity adjustment built in.

[Q] [help] notification bar randomly opening

Hey guys,
Had my transformer for 2weeks now and loving it. However recently (first noticed it 2 days ago) the notification bar has randomly started opening itself. It doesnt happen on a regular schedule -sometimes it will happen 3 or4 times in a couple of minutes, sometimes only once or twice an hour but not less often than that.
It happens even when im not touching the tablet at the time so i dont think the screen accuracy/calibration would be causing it.
I have turned it off and off a number of times to no avail and Ive also tried a factory reset and even with no additional apps installed it still happens.
Finally ive tried it both with and without sd card in and it happens in both situations.
Oh, and the dock connector being attached or unattached doesnt stop it either.
Has anyone heard of this happening before and or have any ideas to solve this problem?
i get this too all the time. i'm not touching the screen and the notification pops up for no reason. sometimes apps open up randomly too, for example i get an email notification and the email app opens. very annoying when plugged into a projector whilst giving a presentation.
somebody must be able to help. I'm not rooted by the way and have no intention too.
Sounds like a hardware problem - the touchscreen registering fake touch events. Check for mechanical stress in the lower right corner.
Update
I probably should have added, like yours mine isn't rooted.
I also turned on the developer options for touch detection, and it's definitely detecting "phantom" touches in the bottom right corner so definitely hardware not software issue.
Unfortunately, yesterday I started having issues with the touch screen being unresponsive in the right third or so of the screen, so I've called Asus this morning and am RMAing the tablet anyway.
I'd suggest you do the same rob if it's still in warranty, in case its a prelude to larger issues like mine was.
interesting thanks both. i was weighing up an rma because my keyboard dock is getting very loose, letting the top of tablet move about an inch without hinge moving. i've turned on show screen taps and already seen one. thanks again.

[Q] Center of touchscreen intermittent

Hi, has anyone else had the center of their touchscreen stop responding? It has been intermittently happening for a couple of days, and I can't seem to pin it to anything I am doing or anything I have changed.
I attached a screen shot of the screen while scribbling in SketchBook to show how the center third of the screen is being skipped. To click anything in the center of the screen, I have to use the track pad on the keyboard.. Powering off and back on clears the issue, but it has come back several times. I hope this is not a hardware issue, what do you think?
Thanks!
BTW - This only happens while using the keyboard dock.
yeah when you close the tab, the keyboard holder presses on the screen too hard and creates a "ghost touch". On//off screen fixes it. as the hinge gets more loose it goes away. i went to developer setings and enabled visual feedback so could spot it.
It seems like when I pinch the rails together to reduce the slop and wiggle of the keyboard and tablet, the ghost spots stop for a few days. I got an AR Drone at Christmas and get nervous about flying it and losing control of the screen (crash and burn).

[Q] Anyone else have an unresponsive touch screen, especially in games?

I first noticed this on a running game where you have to hold down either the left or right side of the screen to move in that direction. It would usually register the first press, but not that I had held my finger down so I wasnt moving properly. I thought this was due to the game it's self rather than my phone.
I've just downloaded Naugh where you have to rotate the screen by touching either side of the phone, and again the same issue. It's really unresponsive - It will recognise the tap but not that i've held it, it will stop working. Occasionaly this will also happen when scrolling a page.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or if not, any suggestions on figuring out whats wrong?
I have recorded a video that shows what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW2gCWpThWc

When you go to Settings>About phone - there is a Diagnostics section>Test device. You will see a list of tests you could do including touch screen.
I've tried this, thanks.
There is no aparrent issue using this diagnostic. It doesnt detect multi-touch though, which I find a little odd.
I did find this article though:
http://johnhaller.com/blog/2014-03-06--sony-xperia-z1-z1s-touch-screen-issue
Which seems to be the exact same issue I have on my Z3 now.

What do you mean? There are two options; one which shows dots where you are touching, and another which shows two lines for each point you touch; the lines cross at the point you are touching. They absolutely do detect multitouch, so if you're using more than 1 finger but only seeing one point, or one pair of lines, then you have a problem.
I only have one option under that test, which is to see a yelow line. It doesnt detect more than one touch at a time though.
I have downloaded a seperate screen testing app, and that detects up to ten points at once - again without any obvious issues with unresponsive.
I really can only reliably replicate the issue when playing games.
Mine does have a similarish issue.
Double tap doesn't work on first try when you last use the phone for some time.
But i think it is a software thing cause it worked fine when in continuous use.

In Settings, enable the Developer Options, then tick "show touches" and "pointer location".
I notice this issue all of the time in Ingress, however I have tried multi touch test apps and can easily get perfect tracking with 5 fingers on the screen, so I am sure the multitouch and display is working fine, and I have no problems with Google Maps or Waze where similar gestures to tap on things, and two fingers to rotate and shrink/enlarge are used.
I have no idea what is causing it, but it seems to be software rather than hardware.

I don't play games on the phone, but did try Modern Combat 3/4, which I have purchased long time ago, just to try them out. So I have played last night and have not had touch screen issues.
Yes I have noticed it, and it has at times been extremely frustrating, and 99% of the time I think part of my fingers holding the phone are touching the screen somewhere, each time I see this and adjust my grip the problem is not longer there. I think this also is partly related to the thread about ghost touches.

Yes exactly the same issue.
I agree I think it's software. Another strange thing is If I flip the phone around (So the headphone jack is now on the right, rather the left), and the game allows the screen to rotate, the issue goes away completely.
Such a strange bug.
Same thing here, and it happens very often. I ran all tests and it seems a software issue. Hope Sony solves it 'coz it's damn annoying.
Just discovered something else, in Ingress, it's always been dodgy with multitouch, however if I put the phone on the table or sofa and just touch the screen it's even worse.
Again using the same gestures in Google Maps it works fine.
I don't understand why not holding the phone would make a difference. I tried propping it up on the table to see if it was related to the angle, but still a lot worse when not holding it compared to holding it.
Never had it during games but during calls it kinda doesn't respond to touches properly.....weird.
I am facing too many issues with the Z3. First the camera quality, then the front bezel leaking light, then the 3G, now touch response. Duh!!! Should've bought the HTC M8 EYE.
No such issue for me so far at least.
Isn't the M8 Eye for China only?
I can't type for **** on my Z3 compared to my SIII. Taps don't register as quickly. Not sure what the heck is going on.
I can confirm that the latest firmware 23.0.1.A.5.73 released by Sony today, has fixed my issues with the responsiveness with the screen and games.
I hope I see that update soon. I can't wait to type quickly and double tap with no issues.
No issue with games but, typing is a chore, it keeps pressing the wrong keys like b for spacebar etc....

I've been noticing this lately as well when using the phone when it's on a flat surface.
Sometimes pulling the notification bar down can take a few times.
While play Ruzzle, it's nearly impossible to spell a word unless you pick the phone up.
Was thinking it might be the way it detects your finger, as I normally use the tip of my finger when it's flat, and my thumb when it's in my hand.
