AOSP:
Android is an open-source software stack created for mobile phones and other devices. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP), led by Google, is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. Many device manufacturers have brought to market devices running Android, and they are readibly available around the world.
CAF:
The Code Aurora Forum is a mutually beneficial non-profit corporation promoting open source software that enables mobile and wireless ecosystems that rely on wireless internet and cellular technology. This innovative technology is changing rapidly and we are here to help you keep up with the flow.
So, is code aurora also open source?

After going thru various roms, my best experience has been with cm7, but I REALLY like the file explorer from MIUI. Is there any way to get an apk of that and install it to cm7 (or any rom). Thanks.

from what i have read MIUI is closed source and much of it cannot be ported over to other roms
How can something that is based on open source be closed source?

I doubt it. The MIUI File Explorer depends on proprietary libs, and since it's closed source, it's nearly impossible to rewrite the necessary libs.

The Chinese devs make changes or additions to the source code and don't release them. Yeah, it's probably illegal, but they're in China. There's almost no legal recourse available if someone wanted to sue.
Damn...forgot about the whole closed source thing. What a shame...that app is really slick. I miss MIUI because of it alone. Sticking with cm7, though. The kernels play nicer with cm.

it's not illegal.
HTC does the same thing - you don't have the sources for their Mail or Weather apps, do you ?

Google releases Android's source code through the Apache License.
The Apache License does not require modified versions of the software to be distributed using the same license, so you can make a change to the source code and not have to provide that modified source code to anyone.
The underlying Kernel that Android runs on top of is licensed under the "GNU General Public License version 2" which does require that modification so the source be provided.

Not a bad implementation, wish it included an FTP server service inside, like MIUI. But we cant have everything i suppose!
I was looking at the Vibrant source code and I could not find the source for the music player. I downloaded the firmware source code from Samsung's website but could not find the music app in it. Does anyone know where it is?
Download bloater. Its in most of vibrant roms and its also a paid app in the market. It brings back bloat ware on jfd. Really useful!

He's asking about the source code, not the apk.
AFAIK Samsung has only released what they're obligated to under GPL - ie. the modifications they've made to existing open source software governed by the license. The music player is part of the Touchwiz framework, which is Samsung's proprietary code, and is not open sourced. Similar to HTC only releasing kernel code, and not the code behind Sense.

In my dream world this will make it into the real Android...
My understanding of building an OS is extremely limited, I'm just a user. But based on the article, it implies that this OS was run on two different devices (HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia Tab) with improvements noted... and the team that developed XobotOS isn't working on this anymore, but released their work to the public... does this mean that in theory, developers could take this and build for other platforms at this point? Would it even be worth developers looking into this?

Not really, because most/all apps are coded for Java, so would stop working

I am a big fan of .NET (and off course Mono), I was thinking of starting a similar project myself, but unless Google approves this project and merges it with AOSP it's kinda pointless...
If there will be a high-level translator integrated into the OS, I will surely try to port it over to my device (Acer Liquid Metal).

It makes me wonder, why Samsung would release the Google sources on their servers.
I thought it is Nexus like thingy, thus Google maintains the code and subsequently host them on their servers.

But, Mr. Targaryen, I think he meant that Google should host these sources since it's a Nexus device now.

So this is probably not the Google Edition source code, but for a different device.

Well, the fact is the source code is explicitly marked as for the GT-I9505G, so it's normally for the Google Edition.
I had not time to see what this source code contains...but I would like to ask if someone did for telling us if specific drivers are included or not...
Yes it is the Google edition source code. I checked the files.

Is there a way to know the hardware?
So im on the fence about this phone i have the source on its way down, but i am unsure if i should go buy a t-mobile s4 right now or wait until the 26th for the google edition...? i wouldn't mind trying the new "features" of the regular s4 although i hate touchwiz... but will the google edition come with the drivers for the extra sensors on the s4..?
I wat to put this unlocked iPhone 5 to rest..

If the Google Edition will really support the extra sensors, it will be a really nice news. Anyway, I think that if Samsung/Google release the i9505G as a i9505 with pure AOSP, I mean without extra drivers (for example for the IR blaster, hygrometer and so on...) nor funcionalities, why then to buy such an amputee and so expensive phone ! In addition, Samsung might see its brand heavily affected with such stupidity!
Maybe I'm wrong, but even Nexus devices contains open source software and proprietary programs like Google Apps. So, in my opinion, having a i9505G doesn't mean 100% AOSP and drivers port can be illegal for copyrighted material !

Hey all of you Devs, RC's, and so forth...
I plan to start using GITHUB, but I am currently trying to build a list of possible Google play apps that will work like GITHUB, and/or any third party apps. This is so I can work on repos from my device when I am not by a computer.
So if any of you know of one that works for you, please, post about it here so I may be able to check it out.
Thanks

Ok, for you git users out there. I have narrowed it down to two apps for android. These apps will allow you to use git from your phone for times when you are not by a pc. The first one is called SGit. This app is pretty legit. It is also open source (that means java, c, and so on). Works really well, but my only problem with it is that it does not give options for working with branches whether you are trying to create, merge, checkout, etc. However, been looking at the source and its apparent that those options are being added so I look forward to the update.
The other app is called AIDE. This app is mainly for building apks from your device, but due to its wide diversity you can pretty much use this app for a wide variety of projects. It comes with git built in and features A LOT of git commands with a pretty slick gui. The ONLY problem with that app is you will NOT be able to use git with AIDE like you want to unless you purchase the apps premium key from the play store which is currently selling for $9.99 U.S. dollars. As it stands these two apps are best fitted when working on repos.
I currently have both on my device and I plan to keep both.
