[Q] rooting question - HTC Sensation

im on my stock rom and stock everything just rooted... i do have clockwork recovery though. question is does this prevent me from getting ota updates or not? i have read various things saying that if you have a custom recovery installed it will prevent the install of the ota update but you still get the file ota.... Also, if it does work to install an ota update will i lose root? thanks

[Q] Rooted sensation can be update official ics??

is it rooted android can update official ics??
If you are on a custom ROM, no. If it is only stock ROM with root, maybe. Typically, you need a stock recovery to accept OTA updates. If you used the HTCdev unlock method, you might still have stock recovery. If you used Revolutionary, most likely you have a custom recovery.
There's no way to recieve the update via ota while rooted unless your stock rooted but I'm pretty sure a dev will make a custom rom thats fully stock with the lates ICS build for the Sensation
if you are using stock rom

Im using rooted stock rom.....and i receive automatic update yesterday for ics... After updating the root was not remove but the boot loader is now s on.....
you should flash stock RUU first to get everything completely stock, especially the recovery.
no need to s-on. s-off is fine. and do not flash any custom recovery this time!
leave it stock and unrooted.
then you can apply ICS OTA after applying first OTA until ICS OTA.
after that you can flash custom recovery and root your device.

Haha yes, i have faith in the devs from our forum. OTA updates will come attached with sense and other bloatware, not exactly something I want to deal with.
if i flash back to stock rom can get the official update??
still on old custom rom not the ICS version

With the highest possibility - Yes!
So i think i have the same question.
I have my official stock rom rooted on my htc sensation, no custom rom installed.
But when i try to update to ICS (i get the option to update over the air) it gives me the "error" screen showing an android man, besides a warning mark.
So is this superuser blocking the update or something else?
And how can i update to ICS.
(i don't care if i lose my root, the phone can be rooted after the update)..

Just restore stock recovery and intact stock Rom file (not delete any apps in original stock rom) and you can update via OTA. But the bootloader could be lock again.

If you're rooted it is NOT advised to apply the OTA as it's more than likely going to screw your phone up. You're better off just going to a custom ROM instead

Update OTA after root

Hi , i have my one s rooted but i have recived one update message of one update.
For this my question is , How to update after root?
I´m trying install but every time i can do it , the phone goes to teamwin recovery.
Help me.
I can tell you my experience with TMO US 2.35.531.12 minor update. First, I needed to flash stock recovery. It didn't work with a custom recovery (mine was TWRP). Then I needed to revert HBOOT state back to "relocked." Then for this particular update I was required to unroot.
Not sure if these apply to you but apparently these are pretty common processes you may need to go through for an OTA update for HTC devices, even with stock firmware. For the 2.35.531.10 update I didn't have to unroot.
Must have to relock. Im rooted. Stock recovey. Ota wont complete. Unrooted, still wont complete.

[Q] updating device.

I was just wondering, is the only way to be able to receive updates from Samsung is to be on the stock rom, I currently own a rooted Asus tablet with a stock rom But I can no longer receive Updates through Asus because of unlocked bootloader . So all in all I guess I'm asking how do the updates work on this phone with, root, unlocked boot loader, stock/custom roms. Thanks.

It's all the same for all devices, unlocked bootloader you don't get OTA. If you're using custom/stock rom with unlocked bootloader, you just have to wait for a repack stock rom or update custom rom. If you have rooted pure stock rom you should able to receive OTA and use OTA root keeper to preserve root. If you modify your build.props or removed system apps, the update will failed. Hope that answer your quesiton.

So from what I understand as long as Im on the stock rom even if its rooted I can receive updates and I need to use ota root keeper to continue to be rooted after an OTA update, correct?

I should probably add, if I had just rooted and got twrp and made a backup of the stock rom, then flashed a custom rom and if I wanted to update could I just reflash the backup of the stock in twrp to be able to update, this would be for if they Didn't have a custom rom out for the latest update. As of right now I have a tablet on ics but I cannot update to jb because I don't have the jb boot loader or whatever, but say I was to flash a stock Asus rom on ics And use OTA rootkeeper Would I then be able to flash jb custom roms? I assume the OTA update from ics To jb installs the correct boot loader instead of having to do it manually from a cimputer, big thanks for any help.

Q: Noob asking about root and OTA

Hi guys. Will i lose my OTA if i root my device and keep my stock revovery? I read somewhere that root disables OTA no matter are you on stock or custom recovery like CWM. And then some says: it is ok, you get your OTA after root as long as you are on stock recovery.
Sorry noob question and bad english.
If you are on Stock ROM you will still be able to get notification and download the OTA but it won't install because it checks for all the Mods and stuff before installing. the simplest way is to flash a stock firmware and then update
Otherwise if you have stock recovery and you manage to remove all the mods and stuff it will update

Return to stock only if you don't want root. If you do want root. You don't want OTA

You can have ota and root, as long as you don't have a custom recovery. once you get the update you loose root, and have to root it back. just don't install a custom recovery if you want ota updates
As for getting ota back, you will have to flash stock images. that means wiping your device..

Actually you can OTA with root AND a custom recovery. However my real point is just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD... And if that isn't clear - rooted users shouldn't rely on or think about OTAs.
how to back to original recovery?

If you really want to... Even though people are telling you you don't need to..
Just grab the factory images, inside update.zip there's recovery.img, flash that with fastboot.
Why do we go through this every time there is an update?
