[App] GPSTest by Mike Lockwood- Real Instant lock every time. - T-Mobile LG G2x

I tried many apps on the market to help my gps locking issues. I tried every rom out, and played with the conf files, and still get no instant lock. It usually takes 15 mins to get a lock. With this app I get instant lock when i inject Xtra data, which is weird cause all of the others apps I used seem to do the same
I'm running 2.3.3, EB 1.0.7, Stock Kernel
Try it out and report

yes,
while navigation says searching for gps, open the app and hit inject xtra data

is this an option that pops up only while navigation is on? because i just opened the app and dont see an option to inject xtra data....

Why would a GPS app require full internet access. The Chart Cross GPS works and does not require that permission level.

The description reads it's only for devs and requires Cupcake or later...?

we are on later.... and i dont know what it does... but i just open the app same time as navigation and instant locks also... so it works whatever it's doing... i also upgraded to eb 107 so who knows...

XDA/XDAII Locking software

Does anybody know of any software that will restrict the programs able to run on the xda and xdaII?
The reason for this is that i have ~100 xda/xdaII that are being sent out to drivers for use, and they will be using custom made software and a few other programs. therefore we dont want the drivers playing on solitaire or surfing the internet ect ect
Any suggestions?

Pendaz,
Check out SPB Kiosk. I did not use this application and I do not work for SPB but it does look like its designed to serve your exact need. Hope this helps.

aaah! u see i already tried that program and it does work quite well, but it doesnt allow me to run my custom app fully. because it locks more or less everything exept one application, whereas my custom app requires a few different programs to run in the background
thanks for the suggestion tho, i probably should have stated that in my original post :?
any more suggestions?
From the blurb on their web site it looks pretty customizable. Did you try asking SPB for help? I find them usually very responsive. Good luck.
yes i contacted their support team with the error message i was recieving using the form on the website first thing this morning (9am) it is now 14:10 and i still have no reply
i guess ill just have to sit and wait.

[FIX] GPS fix for devices WITHOUT HiddenMenu

After a lot of fiddling, I've found a fairly easy way of fixing the GPS on this device. gps.conf has two lines of code which make a lock nearly impossible. Anyways, here's the fix. Use root explorer to navigate to /etc and find "gps.conf". Mount as r/w, and long press gps.conf. Select "Open in text editor". Scroll down to

I would but whenever I install a nightly over another, there are always little problems and the battery life seems worse. (Yes, I did do a fix permissions.) So I have to do a full wipe whenever I install which is a bit of a PITA. (Apps, settings, themes, layout, etc).
Anyone have any suggestions if this doesn't work? I run CM7 RC1 and have done this fix but still rarely get a fix and when it does work it takes 15 minutes. I also had the problem on stock. It doesn't seem like hardware though because using GPS Status, I can see that I get a lock on 6 satellites or more, but it just won't lock on a location. It should after at least 4, so there seems to be an underlying software issue that carried over from stock to CM.
YUP!

I was about to post almost exactly the same thing. The only difference is I stuck the same port 7275, but changed over to the supl.google.com server. I think 7276 is not encrypted.
In the past I was not able to get a GPS sync from my balcony, but with the Google SUPL server, I got a sync in about 30s.
I'm in Canada and it makes sense. When I was down in the US, my sync was a lot faster off the T-mobile servers, but I think Google servers covers worldwide.

[Q] Solution for GPS Issues in Galaxy S 4G?

Hi,
Has anyone been able to successfully solve the GPS issue on GS4G? I was able to get into lbstest mode when on Froyo and was able to get a lock in about 2 minutes, but since the time I have upgraded to 2.3.6 official, there has been not one instance where I have been able to get a lock by opening up Gogle maps(not even after like 20 minutes!).
I have tried the app GPS Status &Toolbox which seems to be the only thing that was able to give me a lock but it takes about 15 minutes for the first lock.
Has anybody been able to find a suitable solution to fix the GPS issue on GS4G? If so please share, I am sure it will be extremely helpful to countless users like me!
PS: I really do not want to install a new ROM or anything but want to know if there are ways of fixing the GPS issues with on the stock 2.3.6.
BTW, I have root access.
Please help.
Thanks,
Rakshith
If you are rooted, you can dl super manager from the market. Open in and go to the apk manager. Find the lbstestmode.apk, click on activities and then in the first description, click the "create short cut" and it will place a shortcut on your home screen. Then open the shortcut navigate to supl settings and change the server to supl.google.com. Oh, and don't forget to rip lbstestmode.apk out of an old ROM before you do this...

I tried the GPS Aids app but was not of any use. Also, regarding other threads, I was unable to find a concrete solution to this issue, that's why I thought I would put up a new thread.
Is there anything other than GPS Aids that I can try?

Hmm, I don't know. Did you find the thread regarding wiping out a couple of xml files? I'd link you but cannot sesrch @ the moment.
Also GPS Aids has a hard reset function thst might help. Fair warning - it will completely reset your phone so you will lose data, appd, and settings. Make a backup first!

AngryGPS
-Download and Install angrygps on your phone from above
-Create shortcut on homescreen (add > shortcut > activities > angrygps> ...angrygps)
-Run and click tracking test
-Let it run till the accuracy gets under 10m (it will get multiple satelite lockons)
-Your GPS should now lock fairly quickly from now on
This was taken from this thread BUT the CWM flashable zip never worked for me, so i just stripped AngryGPS out and installed it manually. The file at the top link is the AngryGPS.apk that i stripped from the CWM zip.
Let me know how it goes..
EDIT: Supposedly this program used to be included in certain roms, so you may already have it. I think it should be included simply because it seems to work for people to get their GPS going AND its only 106kb, so I don't think people would mind the extra room it takes up
Download Valhalla Black Final. Raver's got a custom GPS driver in it. Trust me, it works well. haven't had issues with GPS since I've used it.

He told me a few months ago when he made it that the GPS would lock in seconds. I didn't believe him at ALL (the default GPS driver on our phone is pretty crappy) then I finally got around to testing it and I couldn't believe how fast it locked. =|. Haven't really used others' ROMs in a while so I forget that the default GPS is pretty damn crappy.
Just wanted to mention that the GPS is working extremely well for me also since migrating to Valhalla Black...and that's after trying many apps, patches and hair pulling since getting the SGS4G a year ago.
Kudos to the crew for their most excellent dev work, keep it up!
GPS works fine for me on octane 3.0.
Of course I never had GPS problems even when completely stock.

There are many threads out there on how to pull and push apps from other ROMs, just search for them. Yes this did fix the issue. When you are in lbstestmode, hit the get position test button and let the phone set for a few minutes. After that, you shouldn't have much wait time to get a lock.

Aside from this, here's another way of using AngryGPS. This will install the system app with an app menu icon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15721652&postcount=13
This has the same file, just not modded.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15695743&postcount=6288
In both cases a phone reboot is ideal, though not really necessary with the modded one. Both work the same and didn't require anything else outside of stock.
There are a lot of threads on this subject for many of the Galaxy S models by Samsung, and each model varies. The system application to test and change settings on the SGS4G (and probably the Vibrant) changes between stock Froyo and stock Gingerbread.
On Froyo (VUVKB5), the application, called LbsTestMode, is ready and easy to access with the Samsung system code: *#*#3214789650#*#*
On the 3 Gingerbread (VUVKJ6) phones I tested, the same code, along with trying out a few others didn't bring up anything. So I installed the AngryGPS (new name in 2.3) files linked above, allowing me to use the system code (or app menu if you installed the mod version) to access it.
You can also look at this simple hardware fix too:

And if it does, what has worked out as the best way to configure it? I had it working when I was on build 40, but it would always revert to it's old behavior of not locking if I rebooted or turned off GPS or even exited AngryGPS.

Google maps running in the background

I like to use Google latitude so I have it enabled but I have it set manual so that it doesn't update my location automatically. But for some reason maps is running in the background and using gps. Even with latitude enabled, maps is not supposed to use gps in the background. What could be causing maps to use gps in the background?
Using better battery stats, SignalCollector.ScannerThread is what is activating maps. Anyone know what that is?

Maps being always on is bugging me too. When I look at battery usage I almost always see something similar to the Screen using 43% and Maps using 25% of the battery with everything else only 2%-10%. Holy hell! Why the heck is Maps eating up a quarter of my battery life?

So either be annoyed one way or annoyed another? You'd think the phone would kill the Maps app since it's not even being used yet it's using a lot of battery. I don't remember my Captivate constantly running the Maps app unless I actually opened it.
I wonder if it's the weather/clock widget on the home screen. You'd think that would only periodically check GPS location for the weather. And you'd also think that it was possible to get location without using Maps.
I need to do bit research before I can answer your question in depth. But one quick solution you can you "tasker" to configure when to use maps

It can, and does (get location without Maps). AFAIK, GPS isn't used to update that location, its based on info from cell network and WiFi network.
I'm on an AT&T Galaxy S3, but am having the same issue. Maps is always using 10-15% of my battery. BBS reports SignalCollector.ScannerThread as the top wakelock. When I look at my battery I see repeated use of the GPS when I haven't actually initialized it.
Anyways, the suggestions to turn off GPS or use tasker to automate the process seem like bandaids. It would be nice to understand first what the problem or 'feature' actually is.
I'm fairly new to android, but I'm frustrated that I can't restrict apps from location services.
Also to clarify, I don't use Lattitude and attempted to turn off all location based services.

Hi,
You should try to run google maps, go to its cache settings and clear the "map tile cache". That fixed my issue of maps always running in the background. Mine wasn't using GPS, I've set it to only detect my location when I am connected to a wireless network.
Hope it helps.

Let's not reactivate threads that have been dead for 3 months...
I've also witnessed a huge increase in battery consumption with the latest version(s), about half the power is consumed in Maps. Killing it doesn't last, it's launched again in background.
After a few tests, this seems to do the trick (with Maps 6.14.1 on JB 4.1.2):
In Settings / Location settings, uncheck "Report from this device".
Make also sure to disable this stupid Google Now gadget (a real battery killer, not to mention the privacy issues - I'm not keen on providing Google with my private life data, who knows to what purpose they're collecting that!).

Why not? People are told not to create new threads, and search, but if they search and find a thread that relates to their issue they are told not to 'reactivate' a dead thread.
So in order for LePunk to keep you happy he is not to create a new thread, but to search for any past threads related to his subject. Once he finds a related thread he must not DARE post there as it will 'reactivate' a dead thread. So how was LePunk supposed to post his very helpful information? Get over yourself.
I am thankful for LePunks post in a supposed dead thread as it helped with an issue I was having.
Also, notice that LePunk has one and only post. He went out of his way to join XDA because he felt he had some information that may be helpful to someone and the response he gets is you crying. He has not posted since. Great way to introduce a new member to the forums!

I was wondering if you all could help me out. I have installed the 7/22 build of jellybean and I send quite a bit of text messages. The problem is, I send a lot at one time and in JB, it stops me after I've send about 4 messages within a minute or two to the same person, asking me to allow this to happen. If I don't say allow, the text message will not send. By text message, I do mean sms to be specific. I searched through settings and found nothing to stop this message from popping up. I love the stock messaging app and I don't want to have to give it up unless there is no way around this. Does this happen to you and if so does anyone know a way around it? Thanks
hey i am running the 7-22 and gapps 7-19
i just sent 5-6 texts to my fb status update system and they all went through with no errors and they were sms messages
also i am having no problems receiving mms

Hmm thanks for your reply. I don't know what would cause this at all
It asks you to allow what to happen?

I'm currently trying to recreate the issue. It's happened several times with normal text messaging to my girlfriend. It basically tells me that I've sent a lot of sms messages in a short period of time. A prompt comes up telling me that after I hit send. In order for the message to send I have to say "allow" in the prompt. The other option is, of course, "deny". This is an android OS prompt, not a superuser prompt. I can't seem to recreate it at the moment with google voice as my contact, but I'm sure it will happen again tomorrow when I'm texting my girlfriend and I will screen capture it, unless anyone knows what this is and how to disable it of course.
Is this the SMS to mms conversion count?

After some very specific searching, I found one topic in the GNex forums about the issue. It seems to be security for SMS bombing apps. Kind of a bummer for me. I hope this is disabled in the future or toggled somewhere. http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1742226.html

And here's a picture from the same forum of the exact message I get if you don't want to read down. http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/521/ddf8dd88394d472eb82a42c.png

Oh, weird, I've never gotten that or even heard that function existed. I bet someone could pretty easily hack the messaging app to remove that limitation. It seems like a valid security feature though to prevent any app from mass texting. Maybe you should just write longer messages, haha.

Hahaha if only i wasn't in a long distance relationship. :/ If anyone knows a thing or two about hacking the app please feel free to hack away. I will provide the beers!

Yeah, I am having the same problem on my HTC Inspire 4G running unofficial CM10 called JellyTime by randomblame ported to my phone. The easiest way to avoid this would be to get a second texting app and bounce back and fourth between the 2 apps. I was running Go SMS Pro and got the same prompt. So that's the best way I can think of to avoid the prompt for the time being.
Ever get one of those "You just won a $1,000 shopping spree at Best Buy" messages?
That's what this is supposed to prevent from happening to you, so your phone doesn't text random people who aren't even in your contact list.
I would say... put up with it. Eventually the mass SMS spammers will get the hint and they'll stop, at which point someone at Google will lift the limit, unless an app dev fixes the apk itself, at which point you'll have to manually monitor outgoing messages.
Edit: I wonder if someone has tried taking the messaging apk from gapps 4/29 and put it in the gapps 7/26 package? Would be a sensible attempt at avoiding the security block, but not sure if it would negate the security feature itself...
Actually, there is an app for rooted users that I found while using the search feature, called BAMF SMS fix. Check it out. Unfortunately I no longer have the link to the file, but I still have the file itself. PM me if you need the file. It is a flashable .zip

So what, we flash the zip and the message never appears no matter how much we text?
