There's Something called Text+ (look for Textplus in market) i used that on my ipod touch for unlimited free SMS, doesnt support calling though... it does give you your own phone number, and you can send and receive texts

Google Voice = not in Canada
I don't care if the service is free or pay-for but I would like some options.
Any info would be appreciated.
Try the new new Vonage app. Downside is that it only works between Facebook users with the app installed on their Android, Apple or Blackberry phones. Other than that it looks good and is totally free worldwide.

Tried it.. just can't get it to work. After I enter my facebook login and passwd, it says Can't connect to facebook, try again later and closes itself.
Guess I have to stick to crappy fring
Google voice works in Canada. U need an Alberta number to forward to. The only downside is having to use the web browser to make outgoing calls.

But you have to pay about 50$ for the sip settings (user/pass)
Free local calls and between some cities.
Unfortunately without sip settings, you can't use sipdroid.
3cx phone seems to work best for me since it supports g711. Sipdroid doesnt seem to have that codec. Havent found any that support g729 yet. 3cx also allows multiple sip accounts. Used it with voipcheap and gizmo5. Seems to work best for me.

Installed it last night but haven't tried it out yet.
I'll play with Vonage today and maybe look into a sip account.
Thanks to all.

Do you know any sip provider with prepaid for international which doesn't expire and preferably free local or north america calls?
You can also try Nimbuzz. They just released a new version the other day, that is supposed to reinstate Skype VoIP service. Haven't tried it myself yet, though.

Thanks.
I just created a Sipgate account (VPN on the home computer combined with a friend with a US cell phone got me an invitation code).
I've tried to set it up with Sipdroid and although it connects (green light on top) it fails to sustain a phone call. It makes the call and then drops it. I've tried with and without using the STUN server and have also tried various ports.
The Sipgate account is working. I called my Sipgate number and left myself a voicemail.
Is Rogers simply blocking my 3G VOIP trials?
i decided to put this together all in one place
as we all know there are various ways to get free text, mms, outgoing and incomming calls and video chat
if you know of any more please feel free to post here
google talk =chating
skype provides voice chat for skype user
nettalk = free calling usa and canada works on 3g to
csipsimple= provides free soft phone for voip wokrs with many sip providers
sipgate = provides a free number and free incoming calls outgoing calls cost a fee
google voice can be linked to sipgate for local number to call
pinger text free= provides number and free incoming and outgoing text and now mms
haywire= provides number for free text
oovoo great for videochat
with a combination of these apps i can now sms, mms, place calls ,receive calls and video chat over wifi and 3g for FREE!!!!!!
hope you enjoy

There's an app called, "chikka" where you can send free sms and phone calls to the Philippines. I haven't tried it yet, though, but it's in the market.
I've search and am unable to find a messaging service that uses a data plan as a send / recieve instead of your text messaging plan. Anyone know of a app out there that does this? I dont care if its paid or not......
I believe you can with Google talk.

If you download SMS chomp there is a feature in there to text for free, you could check that out.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Yeah, check out ChompSMS- you can use your carrier for SMS or switch and use the "chompsms network". This also integrates with TextFreek (textfreek .com), so you can get free text messaging this way.
Currently have an iPhone 4 and am waiting for my new Infuse to arrive. The iPhone had an app (that when jailbroken) allows you to use your Google Voice phone number for BOTH incoming and outgoing texting at no charge using data. The app even integrates with the native SMS app on the iPhone and works flawlessly.
I have been looking for a similar Android app and can't find one. Anyone know of such an app that allows FREE in and outbound texting using data?
To me the $10/month is a waste for a texting plan when I maybe will do 10-20 texts/month and AT&T's "pay per text" rate is a total ripoff.
U should be trying out "Google Voice" first. This does exactly what u r looking for.
I thought Google Voice on Android only allows free INCOMING texts and all outbound were still charged as "normal" texts either to a plan or at AT&T pricing?
If not, I was misinformed and am glad to hear that.
Google Voice in Android is much more integrated and you should be able to do the same with your Infuse (as you did with your iPhone), seamlessly and without the need for jailbreak/root and no extra charge

Close, but I don't want yet another phone number.
I'm looking for a Google Voice solution and I am being told that (strangely enough) the Google Voice app should work although I am still a bit skeptical about that because everything I have read says it's only for incoming text and outgoing text through G.V. is charged at regular text rates.
I'll have to wait until my INFUSE shows up then I will find out for sure. All I have now is a Samsung 10.1 Android tablet which won't let me download G.V. so I can't even try.
I would like to know as well if GV outgoing is free. I dont text much but my wife does quite a bit.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Outbound and incoming texts through a Google Voice number is completely free. I've already sent a hundred or so texts without incurring charges through Voice.
you can't get MMS though right?? is there a work around for that??

So far, none.
Well, finally got my Infuse and loaded up my Google Account and as others said I do indeed get 2-way free texting.
The only thing I don't like is that it is not integrated into the "stock" messaging app. I have to keep a GV widget on the home screen. As I mentioned in my OP there was an iPhone app that fully integrated GV into the iPhone messaging app complete with pop-up notifications which was very nice. I'm surprised that doesn't exist for Android since Google and Android are so closely related.
You can forward GV texts to email or even to your carriers text messaging but of course it then becomes a chargeable text.

+1
I use GV for all my texting needs. So no need for native messaging app. And for occasional/stray texts that need to come to my phone, I use GoSMS.
This site is great! Thanks for the help so far.
I have a pre-paid normal tracfone (basic non-smart phone) and was wondering if there is a way to receive my text messages that I get on my phone to send to my asus tablet and reply back to them on my asus?
Try google voice u can set it up with ur trackfone number and get txts and such to ur voice number Idk about getting ur txts from ur track number

mysms is not bad considering it is in beta stage. Been using it for a couple of weeks.
syncsms is great

Keep in mind OP has a "dumb" phone so app like SyncSMS, TabletTalk, ect is no good to him.
Google Voice work on the TF without a need to sync with a phone.

SMS: Google Voice
Voice: Groove IP and Google Voice
Either way, you should install google voice, and login to google voice from a PC and you may assign it a local phone number (Free from google might I add)
Groove IP is a paid app, but I highly recommend it. I've used it in conjunction with gvoice for a while, and can easily make/receive calls and texts through my tablet. Microphone quality is fairly horrid though, so I'd recommend an external mic/headset combo
Google Voice will only allowed sending 150 texts a person per day unless you are using the SMS forwarding, something my fiancee learned after a month of like 10k texts (combined).
You can use Google Voice to forward texts to a dumb phone and only have to worry about your carrier. No application on phone required.
Other services, I'm not familiar with.
