VOIP in Canada - XPERIA X10 Themes and Apps

Anyone using 3G VOIP on the X10 with a high level of success?
Skype Beta, tried but doesn't work in this "region"
Fring = crap
Google Voice = not in Canada
I don't care if the service is free or pay-for but I would like some options.
Any info would be appreciated.

Try the new new Vonage app. Downside is that it only works between Facebook users with the app installed on their Android, Apple or Blackberry phones. Other than that it looks good and is totally free worldwide.

Tried it.. just can't get it to work. After I enter my facebook login and passwd, it says Can't connect to facebook, try again later and closes itself.
Guess I have to stick to crappy fring

Google voice works in Canada. U need an Alberta number to forward to. The only downside is having to use the web browser to make outgoing calls.

But you have to pay about 50$ for the sip settings (user/pass)
Free local calls and between some cities.
Unfortunately without sip settings, you can't use sipdroid.

3cx phone seems to work best for me since it supports g711. Sipdroid doesnt seem to have that codec. Havent found any that support g729 yet. 3cx also allows multiple sip accounts. Used it with voipcheap and gizmo5. Seems to work best for me.

Installed it last night but haven't tried it out yet.

I'll play with Vonage today and maybe look into a sip account.
Thanks to all.

Do you know any sip provider with prepaid for international which doesn't expire and preferably free local or north america calls?

You can also try Nimbuzz. They just released a new version the other day, that is supposed to reinstate Skype VoIP service. Haven't tried it myself yet, though.

Just added Tubaloo to my to test list.
Thanks.

I just created a Sipgate account (VPN on the home computer combined with a friend with a US cell phone got me an invitation code).
I've tried to set it up with Sipdroid and although it connects (green light on top) it fails to sustain a phone call. It makes the call and then drops it. I've tried with and without using the STUN server and have also tried various ports.
The Sipgate account is working. I called my Sipgate number and left myself a voicemail.
Is Rogers simply blocking my 3G VOIP trials?

Anyone know an app thats more reliable than Nimbuzz? I use it when I can, but its very inconsistent. Sometimes it's fantastic, other times it refuses to connect to my skype acct. I'm overseas 200+ days a year and it's a shame I have to use my ipod touch to call home instead of my nice new evo.

[Q] Talkatone || How to get VoIP through GTalk on Android?

Does anyone know if there is a similar app for Android, or a way to get the same functionality as this: http://www.talkatone.com/
I already know how to get something similar with GV + Sipdroid. In fact I am using it right now. What I am basically looking for I guess is a app that will let me use VOIP over GTalk instead of a sip service like Talkatone does.
Same here
I would like to know that too... It always seemed very odd that google themselves didnt make that work...
Still looking
^Bump. Anyone seen anything new on this?
Is there any similar app exists?

Well, it finally seems that something has been done. Check the GrooVe IP app on the market which came out just a few days back. Is is 2.99, I got it. The outbound works fine, but I am not able to get incoming. Anyone else tried it out.
i haven't tried it but 2 of he comments say that it's glitchy and that it doesn't work properly... groove ip
Well I paid the $3 and it seems to be good fo out going but needs some fixes on incoming I couldn't figure out how to answer it lol

This Dev is awesome I reported the bug and he fixed it within a day. It may not be a perfect app but if the Dev is that willing to fix stuff I'm all for recommending others to buy from him. http://androidforums.com/application-announcements/320717-app-groove-ip-google-voice-voip.html this app just needs a Google voice login and nothing extra unlike sip or the others I've tried to use. Today during the tornado I still had data but no texting or regular calls and it worked to make a call! Saved my butt. Worth $3.00!

What are some good SIP providers?

So with Gingerbread incorporating SIP I was curious if anyone had any preferences in SIP providers.
I've tried sipgate, which seems to work pretty well and i bought a gizmo5 account from ebay, but i don't think they are letting you purchase credits. I tried to put money on the account, but it's been pending for quite some time now and there is no way to contact anyone.
Any other preferences that seem to work well?
Sipgate works, and they gave me 60 minutes on a free account to work with.
Didn't u get the 60 minutes?

Check the gizmo5 forums - you aren't alone there. One post is speculating on how they are no longer adding credit pending an integration with google voice.

I got the 60 minutes, but just looking for other good inexpensive providers or what other people may be using.
@krohnjw
Yeah i seen that after i tried to add credits
I added 10$ worth of credit to my gizmo5 account on Saturday and it finally showed up this morning just wait. If you read their faqs it shows they ask for 12 business hours before they will update your account.
Haha, i just checked and i now have 10 dollars there as well. Maybe they have one person that works one day a week to approve credits
Haha, same here - I paid $10 on Dec 19 and finally just got credited today!
Free sip providers
Here are some FREE sip providers:
Whistlephone-dot-com Android app and available sip credentials and DID
voipmyway-dot-com deal changes daily sip creds available free did
zipring-dot-com beta program??
nettalk-dot-com/smartphone android app for gsm/wifi
I'm using Sipgate completely free to place AND receive calls -not using up/buying any minutes/credits. I'm using it with Google Voice AND the "Google Voice Callback FREE" app.... thus it's 100% FREE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10078413#post10078413
I just posted a whole comparison chart of different SIP providers here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967115
I looked into a few providers and didn't like that fact you need to buy credit to make outgoing calls.
I did also setup the work around using sipgate to make free outgoing calls. It wasn't as tightly integrated as I liked so I kept working.
My conclusion was magicjack is the way to go. You know that commerical you see on tv, free phone calls for $25 a year. You can use software to get your sip credentials from the box then use them anywhere.
(link)
Then just plug your sip info into the native calling app and your done. $25 a year for unlimited calling.

[Q] Is there a "free texting" app for Infuse (Android in general)?

Currently have an iPhone 4 and am waiting for my new Infuse to arrive. The iPhone had an app (that when jailbroken) allows you to use your Google Voice phone number for BOTH incoming and outgoing texting at no charge using data. The app even integrates with the native SMS app on the iPhone and works flawlessly.
I have been looking for a similar Android app and can't find one. Anyone know of such an app that allows FREE in and outbound texting using data?
To me the $10/month is a waste for a texting plan when I maybe will do 10-20 texts/month and AT&T's "pay per text" rate is a total ripoff.
U should be trying out "Google Voice" first. This does exactly what u r looking for.
I thought Google Voice on Android only allows free INCOMING texts and all outbound were still charged as "normal" texts either to a plan or at AT&T pricing?
If not, I was misinformed and am glad to hear that.
Google Voice in Android is much more integrated and you should be able to do the same with your Infuse (as you did with your iPhone), seamlessly and without the need for jailbreak/root and no extra charge

Close, but I don't want yet another phone number.
I'm looking for a Google Voice solution and I am being told that (strangely enough) the Google Voice app should work although I am still a bit skeptical about that because everything I have read says it's only for incoming text and outgoing text through G.V. is charged at regular text rates.
I'll have to wait until my INFUSE shows up then I will find out for sure. All I have now is a Samsung 10.1 Android tablet which won't let me download G.V. so I can't even try.
I would like to know as well if GV outgoing is free. I dont text much but my wife does quite a bit.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Outbound and incoming texts through a Google Voice number is completely free. I've already sent a hundred or so texts without incurring charges through Voice.
you can't get MMS though right?? is there a work around for that??

So far, none.
Well, finally got my Infuse and loaded up my Google Account and as others said I do indeed get 2-way free texting.
The only thing I don't like is that it is not integrated into the "stock" messaging app. I have to keep a GV widget on the home screen. As I mentioned in my OP there was an iPhone app that fully integrated GV into the iPhone messaging app complete with pop-up notifications which was very nice. I'm surprised that doesn't exist for Android since Google and Android are so closely related.
You can forward GV texts to email or even to your carriers text messaging but of course it then becomes a chargeable text.

I use GV for all my texting needs. So no need for native messaging app. And for occasional/stray texts that need to come to my phone, I use GoSMS.

[Q] Voice & Message: Hangout, Skype or Viber?

Hi,
If you are familiar with making voice calls via WiFi, can you please recommend an app to use? I know of Hangout, Skype and Viber but I often use regular phone calld and SMS texting. But recently my buddy had moved to a place where phone reception is very bad. We need to look for an alternative using WiFi. Can you please advise an app to use (even if it's different than the 3 above). The requirements are modest:
1- Light resources
2- Text messaging, Voice call, Video call is welcome but not necessary
3- App should not interfer to propose ads or offers or features unrelated to basic audio and text messaging. For example, Viber stickers is something I deem as useless.
4- App should work in WiFi and Data mode.
5- Both of us use Android. Interoperability with other systems would be welcome but not necessary.
Thanks in advance for any help.

In the Play Store GrooVe IP Lite Free Calls Text, there is a mention
On May 15, 2014 Google will no longer allow XMPP based calling through Google Voice. Since GrooVe IP uses that interface, this app will stop functioning on May 15, 2014

This doesn't bode well for the longevity of the app. Furthermore, this apps is VoIP based and requires Google Voice account that we don't have.
try 'Line' for talk or text. I've used it successfully to communicate to the other side of the planet. I am not sure about it's use of resources but it seems to work well enough.

Thanks for the info. It looks like HangOut can do the job. Overall it does what we need. One of the nice feature is that we can use a computer to send message to HangOut on a phone. Even better on Linux, we can use Pidgin to send these text msg.
Viber is OK but it's sign up procedure is weird, the device must have a SIM card for Viber to work, even if we only use WiFi.
Skype seems to have inferior voice/audio quality compared to HangOut. Also Skype consumes more resources. Whether it's on the phone or a computer. However, Skype has a big advantage that it has a desktop client on all OS platform. Overall, we found that HangOut fits best our needs. Hope that Google will makes a Desktop version of HangOut on Linux.
