This site is great! Is it possible to do phone texting on Asus tablet? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This site is great! Thanks for the help so far.
I have a pre-paid normal tracfone (basic non-smart phone) and was wondering if there is a way to receive my text messages that I get on my phone to send to my asus tablet and reply back to them on my asus?

I use Google Voice for SMS and for SIP calling from my Transformer over WiFi

mysms is not bad considering it is in beta stage. Been using it for a couple of weeks.

syncsms is great

Keep in mind OP has a "dumb" phone so app like SyncSMS, TabletTalk, ect is no good to him.
Google Voice work on the TF without a need to sync with a phone.

SMS: Google Voice
Voice: Groove IP and Google Voice
Either way, you should install google voice, and login to google voice from a PC and you may assign it a local phone number (Free from google might I add)
Groove IP is a paid app, but I highly recommend it. I've used it in conjunction with gvoice for a while, and can easily make/receive calls and texts through my tablet. Microphone quality is fairly horrid though, so I'd recommend an external mic/headset combo

Google Voice will only allowed sending 150 texts a person per day unless you are using the SMS forwarding, something my fiancee learned after a month of like 10k texts (combined).
You can use Google Voice to forward texts to a dumb phone and only have to worry about your carrier. No application on phone required.
Other services, I'm not familiar with.

Thanks guys. I decided to go with Google Voice and groove ip

[Q] Is there a "free texting" app for Infuse (Android in general)?

Currently have an iPhone 4 and am waiting for my new Infuse to arrive. The iPhone had an app (that when jailbroken) allows you to use your Google Voice phone number for BOTH incoming and outgoing texting at no charge using data. The app even integrates with the native SMS app on the iPhone and works flawlessly.
I have been looking for a similar Android app and can't find one. Anyone know of such an app that allows FREE in and outbound texting using data?
To me the $10/month is a waste for a texting plan when I maybe will do 10-20 texts/month and AT&T's "pay per text" rate is a total ripoff.
U should be trying out "Google Voice" first. This does exactly what u r looking for.
I thought Google Voice on Android only allows free INCOMING texts and all outbound were still charged as "normal" texts either to a plan or at AT&T pricing?
If not, I was misinformed and am glad to hear that.
Google Voice in Android is much more integrated and you should be able to do the same with your Infuse (as you did with your iPhone), seamlessly and without the need for jailbreak/root and no extra charge

Close, but I don't want yet another phone number.
I'm looking for a Google Voice solution and I am being told that (strangely enough) the Google Voice app should work although I am still a bit skeptical about that because everything I have read says it's only for incoming text and outgoing text through G.V. is charged at regular text rates.
I'll have to wait until my INFUSE shows up then I will find out for sure. All I have now is a Samsung 10.1 Android tablet which won't let me download G.V. so I can't even try.
I would like to know as well if GV outgoing is free. I dont text much but my wife does quite a bit.

Outbound and incoming texts through a Google Voice number is completely free. I've already sent a hundred or so texts without incurring charges through Voice.
you can't get MMS though right?? is there a work around for that??

So far, none.
Well, finally got my Infuse and loaded up my Google Account and as others said I do indeed get 2-way free texting.
The only thing I don't like is that it is not integrated into the "stock" messaging app. I have to keep a GV widget on the home screen. As I mentioned in my OP there was an iPhone app that fully integrated GV into the iPhone messaging app complete with pop-up notifications which was very nice. I'm surprised that doesn't exist for Android since Google and Android are so closely related.
You can forward GV texts to email or even to your carriers text messaging but of course it then becomes a chargeable text.

Obviously I am NOT using the stock messaging APP because it doesn't work with Google Voice. So what messaging app are you using with GOOGLE VOICE MESSAGING?

I use GV for all my texting needs. So no need for native messaging app. And for occasional/stray texts that need to come to my phone, I use GoSMS.

App To Send SMS Text From My Transformer?

I used to have a Galaxy tab and I used an application called TextFree which allowed me to send SMS text messages from my tablet (I was given a free phone number from TextFree). I tried to download TextFree for my Transformer and it doesn't look like 3.1 is supported.
Is there any application out there that I can use to send SMS text from my Transformer?
Thanks!
Jan

Note:you will need an Android phone.
I have and HTC EVO 4G from Sprint and when I got my Transformer, I wanted to be able to SMS text from it too. I did some checking and found out that I could port my Sprint EVO phone number over to Google Voice and that allows me to use Google Voice on my EVO and my Transformer for texting. You'll need to search this forum or XDA for the link to the apk file that allows the install to work on the Transformer for Google Voice. It works great, but doesn't have all the features like an app like Handcent has. But I can Text from either device which makes me happy. Don't know if you're on Sprint but check Google Voice to see if your number can be ported over. I use GV for both text and voice mail.

Thanks for the info~!
I have a Droid X on the Verizon network.
I think you need to pay to have your number transferred to Google Voice unless you're on Sprint - because they have an agreement with Google Voice. Also, IIRC transferring your number to Google Voice terminates your carrier contract (unless Sprint).
Google Voice number porting FAQ: http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?answer=1065667
"Your mobile phone service plan will be terminated when you port your number to Google Voice and your carrier may charge you an early termination fee. You may also experience disruptions in sending and receiving text messages for up to 3 business days after the porting process is complete"
Suck.
Text Plus works for me
an app called "textab" works great for me....it bluetooths to your phone and has worked like a charm....

One word DesktopSMS. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Free Calling

http://mindmirror007.blogspot.com/2010/12/guide-how-to-set-up-internet-calling.html?m=1
The above is a manual for free voice calls over data connection. Only problem works only for US based users since you need a Google voice account available only to US based users.
Wonder if Google voice account use or only creation is limited to US? I expect you should be able to ise it worldwide if you can get around the initial geographic creation limitations. Any ideas on this?

I use groove IP as well and it works great. In order to receive calls you need to log onto your google voice account and forward the number to google chat. After that you will be able to make and receive calls.
Latest Overcome on T-Mobile
So any suggestions on how to get a google voice account considering I am not in the US???
As a far shot I tried using market enabler to fake T-Mobile and Verizon as providers but as expected it didnt work.

Only via some sort of software-based SMS bridge. The device itself has no phone # associated with it and thus can't interface directly with the US phone system. I prefer and reccomend Google Voice since its free and the app is decent. There are many other apps that can also do this job.

You can send and receive SMS with google voice.
Get a GV number, and load google's client.
You can recieve and send directly with the client. The web interface lets you configure gv to forward messages to other sms numbers and/or to email accounts. if you reply to an sms from the email account it will bridge back to the original senders SMS.
My only issue is that when I forward gv sms to phone sms and I reply from the phone, the messages come from the phone instead of bridging back through gv....if of reply from the gv client it is fine.
...this is an excellent solution for wifi only tablets.

Use Tablet talk and sync with bluetooth for both devices. It will allow you to text using your tablet only.
Desksms is going to release a native tablet app too

[Q] Google Voice texting not working

Hey guys i was wondering if anyone could assist me, I keep trying to set up google voice so i can text over wifi with my google number. I link it to my verizon wireless phone number and set up the options so it never uses google voice for voice mail but i can't seem to get the compose option to show up with texts. I made it so it syncs my text messages but nothing works. I cannot use google voice to text one my HTC Rezound or 2nd Gen Nexus 7. Any options to assist?
Honestly Google voice sucks. I use all the time but it lag, and sometimes you get your voice mail late and text late. Maybe it's just me. Just use Facebook messenger for text. It works. Save you an app space.
