[Q] Google Voice texting not working - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys i was wondering if anyone could assist me, I keep trying to set up google voice so i can text over wifi with my google number. I link it to my verizon wireless phone number and set up the options so it never uses google voice for voice mail but i can't seem to get the compose option to show up with texts. I made it so it syncs my text messages but nothing works. I cannot use google voice to text one my HTC Rezound or 2nd Gen Nexus 7. Any options to assist?

Honestly Google voice sucks. I use all the time but it lag, and sometimes you get your voice mail late and text late. Maybe it's just me. Just use Facebook messenger for text. It works. Save you an app space.

[Q] Free Text Message App?

Is there any free SMS app to send/receive (also receive notification when I receive the text message)?
I'm on unlimited data plan but I did not purchase the text plan.
I have KakaoTalk app but I believe this is free for users that also has KakaoTalk.
I know one can send SMS on GMail and receive replies through GMail but I'm not sure if that's a possibility on my NS.
Thank you.

Google Voice is perfect for that, and integrates very nicely with the Nexus S. No MMS, but SMS works great.

Google Voice supports free send/receive SMS?
I know I could use free SMS on GMail by enabling one of the Labs feature but didn't know I could do this on GVoice.
I've been using GVoice as default voice messages. I don't need to do number porting to use SMS right?
I just need SMS, I don't need MMS, just to do some light text messaging when I don't feel like talking on the phone.

Nope when u make a Google voice account you download the app and u can use that to text.
You can also go on the market and look for a app called textfree. It works really well too

I enabled GVoice on my NS but I'm not sure where I could send SMS message. I looked through all settings but I couldn't find it.

I'm accessing Voice app that was already installed on stock Nexus S and I updated to 2.3.2. I only see Refresh, Labels, Balance, Search, Setting, and Help on menu.
Edit: I suppose it works if I access one of my voice message and go to the menu then, I see Text icon.
But I don't see them on the main menu.

Alternatively, you can use Textfree.. not sure how your Google Voice is messed up. Uninstall and reinstall?
He needs to have a Google voice number first before he can text. Since it sounds like he wasn't familiar with it, he likely has to set up a number first.
Sigh, let's try this again.
Go to http://voice.google.com MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOGLE VOICE ACCOUNT.
In the settings on the website, make sure you have NO TXT forwarding, otherwise obviously you'll be paying each TXT GV forwards to your phone.
Also make sure you set your GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER as the SENDER for TXT, again otherwise if someone replies, it will come to your normal cell phone sms number.
On your Nexus S, go to the Market and download the LATEST VERSION of Google Voice. Install it. Run it. Actually to be safe, go to your settings/appliations and do a CLEAR DATA on Google Voice, to delete your settings/start from scratch.
Launch Google Voice and FOLLOW THE WIZARD.
Now, press Menu and you should see Compose.
the only reason i said that is because it is absolutely possible to use google voice for voicemail service without actually having a google voice number or account. he'd actually need to go in an officially get/request a GV number. without that GV number, the texting options would not be there/work.

[Q] Droid Incredible OMGB-6 Installed: No Google Voice?

So I am an avid google voice user, and I upgraded my incredible to the OMGB-6 ROM, and I don't know what's going on. There is no longer a Google Voice app in the Market (I guess it's not compatible with gingerbread yet) however every once and a while I will get a call from Google Voice that has the CORRECT caller ID and when I answer gives me all of those voicemail options. However, text messages arent going through at all, even though in my settings it is setup to forward the text messages to the phone. Please note that the account my phone is setup with is the same gmail account that I use to login to Google Voice.
What's going on here?
Thanks,
Max

[Q] Fully native google voice

I have been a google voice user since it was GrandCentral and an Android user since the Tmobile G1 (i even pre-ordered it). It's ridiculous that despite it being a google app/service there is no true full integration with android. it's great that there are apps that can integrate text messaging but they are all lacking. When setting up calls, Clicking "place all calls from google voice" in the google voice app get the job done but a banner comes across the screen that says using google voice and sometimes dialing from that times out (I think that's what is happening)and i have to use my phone's real number then. Is there any app or rom that has True google voice integration, when i say true i mean that if when i use my phone i cant tell that its using google voice (no banners, or special messages for calls) and texting from native text messaging apps in seamlessly connected to google voice? Somethign like having a setting where u just check use google voice number for all phone services. Does anyone have any solutions? I am all ears.

I agree with you. I am a heavy Voice user and would love to know more about how I can enhance my experience. I'm using a Galaxy Nexus, and even so, the Google Voice app is not as fluid as I expect it should be. Sometimes it's choppy.

[Q] SMS via messaging app shows as Google Voice number

I'm not sure if this is a new google feature or an issue on my end.
I use the native messaging app to send out sms to certain people to display my carrier provided number and the google voice app to send out sms to other people to display my google voice number. i discovered that regardless of using google voice or the native messaging app(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507720), it was going through as my google voice number (e.g. google voice and/or native messaging app sends sms as google voice number). this is what i originally thought was happening until i discovered that if i send an sms with the native messaging app to another user with google voice installed, it goes through as my google voice number. if i send an sms with the native messaging app to someone without google voice installed, it displays my carrier provided number.
*obviously if i send an sms from the google voice app, it shows up as the google voice number*
i'm not exactly sure how to fix this. i could be completely wrong in the scenario above because i've only tested it with several other friends. i have made no changes to my google voice web settings, nor my google voice app and native messaging app.
any help is greatly appreciated.
i'm on verizon, gs3 android 4.1.1
even with google voice uninstalled and the phone rebooted, sending from the native messaging app sends through as my google voice number
bump
anyone?
Install the Google voice app and in the app settings. Click on send text through app instead of through phone messaging app. This might help

Google voice Verizon

Anyone else having issues with getting notifications when receiving SMS messages though voice?
I do not get a notification but if I open the app they auto populate and load and finally the voice notification when then show new messages. I switched the app to use the default messaging app and I get the notifications. If I go into the web interface and forward messages to email I get them as well. But the voice app it's self does not notify me of new messages? I know it works because my galaxy would get the notifications and I know background sync is on and running.
Any suggestions? (No root this is a work phone.)
I'd highly recommend you install and use Hangouts for your primary SMS app. The gVoice app is basically just a utility tool to get your gVoice integrated into your dialer and not really meant to be a fantastic SMS app.

Hangouts is installed by default (at least on Verizon.) Appreciate the comment and thank you.
