Can I Install Android 2.1 on the Nexus S for Development Testing? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to install android 2.1 on Nexus S. Yes, you read that correctly. I want to backup my existing cyanogen 7.1 (android 2.3) install, install 2.1, create a backup of that, then be able to switch back and forth between 2.1 and 2.3 for testing android apps during development.
Does anyone know if this is possible? Do you know of any roms that might work? Any direction would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

sure that would work!
but there arent any android 2.1 nexus s roms. you would have to build your own from source, or port a 2.1 rom to the nexus s

Hmm...well then it does not look too promising for me . I have never built an android rom or ported one before. If anyone else has any other ideas I would love to hear them.
Maybe it would be possible for me to install an android 2.1 rom made for the Galaxy S?

the galaxy s rom wouldnt flash, unless you turned off the signature check in recovery. then you will probably just brick your phone.

The kernel I think would be the hard part of this.

I was a noob a few weeks ago so I will give you some advice:
Read all you can first, then reread stuff all over again. Development Forum is a good place to start.
"Stock" android always has extras - device drivers for a phone, kernel enhancements, etc. If you are looking for a build without AT&T stuff, then there are some i9000 Roms, that can be installed, but you need to install the Captivate kernel. All of these are development builds and have some bugs. They also are for the EU Galaxy, and they have different Samsung software included as well as different menus.
There are guys working on building a plain vanilla 2.1 ROM with the source code, but it will take some time.

Does Android need ROM to work ?

As I have understand ROM is only manufacturers " own look". So is it possible to somehow delete ROM and use "naked" android ?
Im using Motorola DEFY 2.2.2 (nordic nonblur version)
This could be stupid question. But yes, Im beginner in Android world
Even if you use "naked" Android, this would still be a ROM. This is what's commonly referred to as 'stock' Android.. And yes it is possible, just do a search for a 'barebones' ROM. Here's one.
A phone without a ROM is like a computer without an operating system. It may as well be an empty box.

a custom Rom (like cm7) is just a modified android firmware which has his own look and the "unnecessary" System Apps are deleted, the whole android system is customized, you have more settings...
i hope i could help you.

I've always wondered why they still it a ROM. In early days, smartphones and PDAs had a read only memory area which stored the Operating System(OS) of the device. This is how the word ROM came. I think this is not relevant anymore and a OS would be more descriptive.
If you swap the word ROM with the word Operating System(OS), everything will be clear. Android doesn't need ROM or OS to work because Android itself is the ROM/OS.
All devices come with a preinstalled ROM designed by the manufacturer. This is called stock ROM.
Then, there's vanilla ROM or AOSP ROM. These ROMs have the Android OS in its purest form as developed by Google. Most manufacturers add a custom interface and software in the stock ROM.
Finally, we have custom ROMs. There are extensively modified ROMs which have features and customization you can't find in custom or AOSP ROMs. These are usually for the people who want to push their device beyond its limits. It's kind of like getting a tattoo. Famous examples include CyanogenMod, MIUI and MCR.

No. You still need a ROM, just think of a rom as the operating system. You can flash a rom that's what you're looking for. Look through your phone's development section & see if you can find something that you like. Then if you don't know how to flash custom roms, read about that until you understand. It's not hard to do, and I bet you'll like your phone even more once you find a rom that you like.

You can *replace* the MotoBlur ROM by Motorola with a AOSP or Vanilla ROM for your phone. This is specific to your phone and you should see the development section for your phone.
A phone will not function without a ROM. It's like the Windows or Linux in a PC. ROM is just another word for Operating System.

No rooting or modding procedure is 100% risk free. There's always a slight risk although it's very minimal.
Most often, even if something goes wrong and you can't use the phone, you can usually boot into bootloader/fastboot/recovery and use a PC software that came with your phone to restore it to the factory state.
I have used z4root. I don't prefer it but it's relatively easy and works on all 2.1 phones, some 2.2 phones and very few 2.3 phones. If your model is listed as supported, it will most probably work.
Nonetheless, this question is specific to your phone and you should ask it in the Motorola Defy forums or another Defy user.

New to rooting with this phone

I have rooted 3 phones prior to this one. I have it all set up and running Refuse 1.7. I have seen that there are a good load of roms available for the infuse 4g. Many of them say 2.3.5, etc. Is that the android version needed by the phone before installing the rom? I am on 2.2.1 and am worried about installing any other rom, than one which has froyo in the name leaving me with only 3 choices. Any help would be appreciated I want to try a miui rom or something else from here but am worried that since I have 2.2.1 when I install one that has 2.3 in its name I will brick.

No bro, the " 2.3.5" or "2.3.6" its that ROMs Android version, not the one needed to install it, still you do need a modified recovery to easily install a custom rom. I would personally recomend this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220088
as a good guide for new guys trying to install custom roms since the instructions are very detailed and hardly would give you trouble. After installing that rom you would have gathered the necessary knowledge to choose your next rom like MIUI or CM7 or another samsung Infuse rom or Samsung port to Infuse.

[Q] Updating an Android OS.

I'm considering buying a phone that I've always wanted, however it's running an 'ancient' Android OS, Froyo. There are currently ICS-custom roms for the phone, but my question is, if I update from 2.2 Froyo to the 4.0 ICS rom, will I be able to access, download, and use 4.0 applications for it? Or are the custom roms just there to make the phone look up-to-date?
Thanks in advanced for any replies

When you install a custom ROM, it updates your phone to the OS that the ROM is based on.
So yes, when you install a 4.0 ROM you would be able to run 4.0 apps because you would be running Android 4.0

Upgrade Android 2.3.5 to android 4.0

Hi all
how can i Upgrade Android 2.3.5 to android 4.0.
I have sought for solution but to no avail. If there is a side effect, i would like to know cos i figured its better to have it as it is than upgrade and have multiple issues.
this question might be commonplace but i do really need to know.
thanks
The 4.0 ruu was only released as a research and development release, it is buggy.
I would recommend installing a custom rom instead. (see the guides in this forum)
Yeah I agree its really not at all what its cracked up to be I regret ever downloading it
Sent from HTC desire S Android 4.0.4
I started installing 4.0.4 more than 20minutes ago whereas it should have taken about 10 minutes. I'm afraid waiting won't help. What do you suggest to recover from the situation? I don't want to have my htc bricked..
Did anything pop up on the screen during installation

DON'T go to 4.0 ROMs whatsoever. Stay with 2.3 or jump right to 4.2+ ROMs. My experience.
