2011 MacBook Pro got SATA III, so you can get SSD like Vertex 3 and you will boot in like 10 seconds on Lion. Install VMware and run Windows on that Mac. Also, you can put 1TB HDD in the optibay for max $125. 8GB of RAM for MacBook Pro would be max $60. That setup would beat that Dell EASILY.
EDIT: Which version of a Mac you got?

i5 vs i7 doesn't make a big difference for an average user on 13" MacBooks Pro, so I would just recommend to upgrade that Mac to max, which would be 8GB of RAM ($60), Vertex 3 120GB SSD ($240) which would achieve +400 MB/s read/write and 1TB HDD ($100) in the optical bay. New WD 1TB 9.5MM HDD reads/writes over 100 MB/s, so you could skip SSD and just put HDD to that Mac if don't want to spend that much money. If I were you, I would never trade that Mac for Windows laptop and Dre Beats, because Macs are very valuable even after months of release date.
EDIT: You may want to run Windows in a virtual machine, which is great and flawless experience. You can run Mac OS and Windows at the same time. I've been doing that for a long time and will never use Boot Camp again.

Have the sites where I can find said parts?? I wouldn't mind upgrading this little guy and making it a "beast".
$300 Inib "beats" headphones?
The only "beats" headphones I've heard of are Monster's "beats by Dr. Dre" - and like anything from Monster are MASSIVELY overpriced.
Skullcandy Titans + Comply memory foam eartips = amazing and inexpensive.

Thanks for the input guys! This is my first Mac, I've only had it for about 2 months. So I'm still getting use to them. I did however know they do hold there value. The "deal" is completely in the debate process and figured I'd get some others inputs before I jumped on it. I really want a sensation for some ungodly reason and then this deal came up so I figured I'd see if it was a decent deal. I guess I'll just wait until they are more readily available and drop in price

this is true, if you like the sensation that's cool, but the Mac is great, the headphones are over rated, (are those the in ear or the studio style) anyway i can get better sounding headphones than anything monster sells for $50-$80 in many cases. if you like the monsters you might be satisfied with skull candies( i hate both). and performance of computers is over rated, i didn't read the specs of both but it really doesn't matter, a Mac can run windows and linux 100% but a dell can't run osX. the Mac offers a bit of an advantage in resale and flexibility in the OS.
Ya I've come to the conclusion to keep my Mac. I've been going to Macrumors.com daily its a great site and full of info, have yet to sign up I think its about time :0 Also if I where to get the Dell I was going to dual boot it with Linux, I've been using Ubuntu for a LONG time now. I've had it on all my windows machines since 2007.

Agreed. I switched to a Mac and I'm using OS X as primary system and Windows / Ubuntu in virtual machines, which is really great, fast and stable. If Windows makes any problems, I just toss another VMware image of it and I can work again on a clean Windows "system" in like 2 minutes.

Mac osx has been great so far, haven't upgrade to Lion yet going to wait a little longer. I never upgrade os's as soon as they come out, I always wait to see if there are any major bugs or anything.
Don't do it. Purely from a value/resale standpoint, the Mac is 10 times better.

Does anyone still use an OQO Model 2? If so, how would you rate the performance in comparison to say, a Galaxy Tab 10.1? By performance, I mean, browser performance, things like netflix, etc. I am very intrigued by the OQO and I am thinking about losing the tablets and going to a Model 02.
I have had an OQO 02 for a few years, and cannot fathom the thought of parting with it. These days I only use it as a "bedside" computer with 15" TV/Monitor, Full sized keyboard and mouse, using the OQO dock w/dvd r/cdr rw. I have in the past used it as my primary computer w/a triple monitor setup and a host of other "proof of concept" projects including using it as a mobile voip platform.
A few things to consider:
It would NOT be a good substitute for a tablet. Screen is too small. But can you put that tablet in your pocket?
The screen is not capacitive ie: "touch". It is proprietary Wacom - needs a Wacom pen to use for screen input.
If you decide to get one, only get the 1.5 ghz model, the 1.6 ghz model has, well, bad motherboards.
It has a noisy fan.
It has an underwhelming VIA CPU with only 1 meg RAM - I call it the "chugger" as in the "The little engine that could".
On the brighter side, Windows 7 works best with it and it should work even better with 8! I have only used Win8 Preview on it and it works fine - but I couldn't do an "upgrade" (loading previous drivers from existing Win7) because it says not enough memory, <1 meg. A full, fresh, install worked fine. I will wait for Win 8 RC0 to arrive before I commit.
The machine is very durable - I am hard on my equipment and the OQO has fared very well through my abuse.
Batteries are hard to find, although available with search - at the moment I am having two batteries recondtioned/fixed locally. They are available on ebay (used), also.
Finally, the OQO is a niche product. You have to want the very small form factor with full Windows OS (or Linux/Mac) to appreciate it.
See OQOTalk and OQOasis for the best information.
Hope this helps!
oqoman
Hi OQOman,
Thanks for replying! You have really given me a lot to think about. Of you wouldn't mind, could you tell me, is $300 a fair price for a model two with the specs you described? I have found several on eBay, but it seems most don't actually have the Wacom digitizer. I really want to try to load an older version of illustrator (maybe CS or cs3). Any thoughts?
Thanks
Kim
$300 seems to be a fair price. Be sure to get the pen. It's a $30 (when new) accessory.
I would look at Oqotalk and Oqoasis forums for the oqo 02 and accessories. Those two forums are the "Bible" for OQO. I wouldn't buy anything until I had read those boards.
Adobe should run on it. Remember it is only 1 meg RAM - but owners have used it.
All OQO 02 have the Wacom (inductive) screens.
OQOman
That Wacom pen, is it special to the oqo or can I buy another one that is Wacom but not specifically labeled for oqo?
All Wacom "penabled" pens work.
I've had both a 02, and 01+, and I have to say, I love them. If you do get one, I'd recommend doing a little modification, and throw an SSD in. The 02 requires a zif ssd, and the 01+ requires a 50pin IDE 5mm ssd, but as oqoman said, oqotalk and oqoasis seem to be the best places online to get infos. Oqoasis moreso, since oqotalk seems to have slowed down a bit.
Where are you having your batteries reconditioned?

Hi just ran into your post and wondering where you're having your batteries reconditioned or fixed? Will a Batteries+ type of shop work on these? Appreciate any insight you can provide to steer me in the right direction. Thanks!
OQO-2 resurrection
Hi, a few months ago I 'inherited' an OQO-2 along with a CD/DVD 'dock' and power-supply. It came without any manuals. The battery was about to explode, so I removed it and soldered the leads in the empty battery-housing to allow the power-adapter to run the computer. It's been up and running for a few months with an Ubuntu LinUx installed by the previous owner. Unfortunately it seems that I cannot set the screen resolution properly(it only allows for 640x480) and so I am never able to see the lower- and right-third of my screen. This makes it hard to do much of anything!
I've connected an external monitor to the dock, but I cannot get the computer to switch to it. Is there a specific keystroke-sequence required to switch to the external?
I've also attempted to install Windows 7 via CD/DVD. When I power-on the computer it'll access the CD/DVD, but it always returns to loading Ubuntu without allowing me to install Windows. Do I need to set the CD/DVD to 'boot' or to 'first-boot' in BIOS? If so, how do I access BIOS?

I've heard of alienwares and since I'm going to get some money I wanted to buy a great laptop. I've been reading about alienwares and they sound like gaming laptops , and really expensive. I still don't understand what Alienwares really are, can anyone explain to me if its good?

Alienwares have very good specs, the chasis, looks awful, the battery life in the laptops is very short.

Alienware is owned by Dell, and they focus on gaming machines. Alienware laptops are large, heavy, and are mainly desktop replacements. The chassis, while very awesome looking, is bulky, heavy, and is really meant to not leave the confines of your home.
Specs on the laptop are okay, but the cost to performance ratio is terrible.
My general rule of thumb is that if you bought an alienware then you a) know almost nothing about computers and shopping for them b) like pretty lights and are an impulsive buyer.
If you are going to run into some money and want to buy a gaming laptop, I recommend the Asus G75 or G55, or the new N series Asus laptops (which are currently being refreshed, so they will have Ivy Bridge and Nvidia 6xx graphics). I personally am looking at the N series as it will be portable with fantastic specs and battery life.
You could also look for the Toshiba Qosmio series, which I have heard is fairly decent, although I believe it is currently being refreshed.
If you have a lot of money and wish to waste it, I would recommend looking at the Samsung Series 7 first, as the Specs on that are much better than on any Alienware laptop.
You could also look at some boutique sights such as Ibuypower.com or Maingear, as they have good gaming laptops, though not as good of a deal as Asus.
Hope I helped you out bud. Good luck!
(P.S. if you want any help in choosing, just PM me, I'll be more than happy to help)
I was looking for a gaming laptop a while back. I recommend you look for the brand Sager. Its the same internal guts as an alienware, without the funky look and cost about 25 percent less.

Alienware (the laptops, that is) is highly overpriced for their components and from what I hear lacking in mobility, battery life and feel-quality (ehrm, is that a good enough word?). However, if you decide to buy one, make sure to get the 1920x1080 display, since the computer is more or less useless for gaming otherwise.
I'd look at ASUS and I've recently heard about the Battalion X7200. Personally, I think it looks like it's been teleported here from the 90's with a low-end time machine, but it gets great reviews!
Good luck in finding a great laptop. Hope I helped somehow, although it mostly turned out to be a prejudice post about Alienware.. Sorry!
It's ok, I changed my mind about alienwares now xD , Asus has been getting a lot of good reviews, I'm gonna take a look at it

if you have enough money for buy it, if you are the gamer -> you must buy it, many reviews site define your problem: cnet - notebookcheck - ...
I have an Asus G60V and for mild to moderate gaming it works great, even being two years old.
Alienware is hardcore gaming laptop and CPU by Dell. They are heavy and rugged and obscenely maxed out on graphics performance. You'll see the price tag and faint most likely.
Sent from my U8150 using XDA
Yea.. Alienware is way over-priced. Sure there loaded to the max spec wise but those chasis's are hideous.
Asus are well rounded, been using one myself for a few years, the UX50V.
If you've got the cash to toss around try building your own. My second laptop is from iBuyPower. Amazing specs, battery life is ~8hrs, light and thin chasis. Spent $1200 on mine.
If you are looking for portable but powerful, then the sager np6110 is a good bet. It's an 11" lappy and you can get it for under 1k with a ivy bridge processor and with a gtx 650m. If you want a 1080p 15" lappy you can get the sager np6110 with a gtx 650m and a ivy bridge processor. You can get the higher end np9130 with a gtx 670m and an ivy bridge processor for under 1.2k. Check out xoticpc if you're interested. :3

My brother in-law has an Alienware laptop. I dont remember which model but its too heavy, too ungly, and too expensive.
When i got my Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7272 17" laptop he was surprised that it was almost half of what he paid for.
Here are my specs:
Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.00Gh, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M, 2 x 500GB, 6GB DDR3, Windows 7 home 64-Bit,
I've played Crysis with all settings on max, and Crysis 2 on high. I've replaced my OS hard drive with an OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SDD and booting up is around 25-30 seconds and opening files and programs is instant.

Good morning
So ...the end of october is coming soon with all new microsoft windows 8 tablets and in this point i'm thinking which Win8 tablet to buy.
at first i was sure i will get the microsoft surface RT but then i found the Acer Acer Iconia w700 and i was amazed ....this machine is rocking!!! it's comes with a stand and bluetooth keyboard and the prices will start in 799$ to 999$ with ivy bridge i5 and 128Gb HDD.
So this changed my mind because i want to have the full Win8 on my tablet and the Surface Pro will only release in the first 2013 quarter.
I will be glad to hear what do you think...

I would like to hear more about the W700 from people who have some knowledge about the tablet & have had any experience with previous Acer Windows tablets. I am hoping to sell my laptop & buy a Windows 8 tablet, so I really want to make an informed choice.
Another long term positive for the Surface will be accessories. Because manufacturers pump out model after model changing every spec on the machine, nobody really will invest in model specific accessories like the iPad and iPhone get. Because the Surface is being done by Microsoft itself, you'll probably see a lot of third party accessories and customizing for it. That's another major reason that I'm going with the Surface, even if HP, Dell, Asus, etc come out with something equivalent.

The best arguement for surface vs oems yet. still don't believe it will sell enough to justify any 3rd partys making accessories for it, though.
will Microsoft pump out some cool boom boxes, charging docks or protective shells? someone is going to have to build them.... hmmmm
The W700 has a cradle, not a dock, meaning that the keyboard is wirelessly detached. IMO, I think that the cradle looks hideous, and the detached keyboard is a dealbreaker for me. It's a shame.
I'm weighing up between the Surface Pro, Samsung Series 7, HP Envy X2 and ASUS Vivo TAB.
I've made a table in OneNote with all the tablets I deem interesting for myself, with known specs/dimensions/etc. There's missing information for some stuff, but here's a link anyway: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?page=view&resid=5304A0F127ADA4A1!6466&authkey=!APoZUZMhsksoqf0
Some notes: Colours and notes are subjective. Red text is a turnoff for me. Green text is very good. Orange is iffy. If there's a + next to storage, then there's a microSD slot. If there's a ++, there's a full SD slot. The number in brackets next to the pen type is confirmed sensitivity levels, but I imagine that most will be 1024 anyway. The note 'can close' means that the tablet is confirmed as being able to close just like a netbook if it is docked.
The bracketed number next to the i5 cores is the maximum turboboost speed. Intel's Clover Trail cores have a 0.1Ghz higher clock than the i5s, offer the same number of cores (including multithreading), offer much better battery life, have NFC (In all cases?), offer better graphics performance, but (AFAIK!) can't turboboost at all.
Right now, my decision really depends on how good the battery lives are. I guess we'll soon find out.
I have an acer w500 with win8 installed and it's fine.I've only had it for about a year (got around dec/jan). This is my first serious tab (wife has asus transformer) so I don't really have anything I can compare it to. I love being able to tether it to my phone and play my steam games for about an hour and still have decent (50-65%) battery left. Haven't had any problems so far.

i have been using acer for past 3 years, timeline notebook, W500 and a S3 right now, i will not buy another acer as my brand new S3 hard drive crashed in 2.5 months and again crashed in 3 more months later, now my S3 is crawling again, i have to change the HDD to SSD as soon as i get my Windows 8 copy, as Acre told me they will charge me $50 to create an image of my windows 7 as the SSD will be diffrent size then the HDD (so the back up is useless..
acer is cheap and good on paper but seems like its just cheap...

I have the Surface pro and I love it,It has complete replaced my i7 laptop.it has plenty of Storage space ism not san why everyone was complaining of course the os requires Storage what type of idiot would expect it not to eat into the available Storage.
Interface
The new interface Was design for touch after a week of usage I could not imagine using win 7 on this device. MS did a great Job when designing the interface.
handwriting recognition
no os available Oat there has better handwriting recognition in comparison to windows8. My handwriting could be in Chicken scratch but somehow handwrite recognition gets it right every time
Stability
Overall the device is Stable I only had to reboot once, because chrome does not play Well on surface. Everything else runs like a Champ.
you Cannot compare the Surface pro to any android or iPad. Both are Just cool toys in comparison, the Surface Pro is a true productivity tool.
Battery Life
Have you used a Lenovo. The t 410 battery life is terrible in comparison. I get more than 4 hours on my Surface Pro. Microsoft tried to be too honest with specs.
I have not had problems with battery life. I charge it once a day. I am enjoying using it so far. I have had a couple of issues with legacy software that I need for work not running with the scaling, so i choose to disable that on the particular app and then it runs.
I even dropped the sucker from pretty high up and nothing happened (I know, I feel stupid). I find myself really reaching for the screen, so much easier than using a mouse. I really wish more software was optimized for that. Firefox needs an update that would let me use it with my fingers (I don't mean in modern UI, I mean desktop mode).
Overall, I am really satisfied. It's a powerful machine and it's been a lot of fun setting it up.
I have had a 128 Pro since launch day. I have an RT as well (well, I should say my wife has it) and we are bot very happy with the Surface.
I have a 64gb pro (Couldn't find the 128) and bought the 128 off of MS. Going to keep this one and return it later when I get my 128. I am quite happy with it. Although it is weird to adjust to the touch keyboard. I couldn't handle the type. It was nice, but too thick and weird when folded back. Overall, it runs like a champ. 5 sec boot. 3 sec shut down. 6+ hours when just using onenote mostly. I love it. Now, it would replace my laptop if I could just get my hands on the 128. Soon. The only thing I'm disappointed in is Chrome support for Windows 8 and touch screens. It's pretty crappy to be honest.
I've had mine for almost a week now - still getting used to it.
I have the 128 GB version - replacing my old 2 year old Alienware M11x R1 (relegated now to my daughter for her school PC) - quite simply - the SP is what I was originally looking for when I bought the M11x..
I run Office, various browsers, many other apps, as well as code on it.. doesn't miss a beat. Averages around 5-6+ hours on a single "typical" charge doing standard "productive" (which you cannot do on an Android/iPad tablet) by my estimates - less if you watch a lot of youtube/streaming videos.
Make no mistake - this *IS* a PC wrapped in a tablet format. To that end - it has some quirks in trying to accommodate both form factors - and it's very unapologetic in the way it attempts to stay the course between these 2 very different form factors. To be clear - *you* must adapt to it..
That being said - my 2 cents - it's lighter and much more portable than an ultrabook, and much more useful than the typical "consumer" driven tablets of Android/iOS...
Combine the 2 (again it doesn't give you a choice.. ) - you have a very unique experience that you'll either immediately fall in love with - or hate.. I'll be the first to admit that it's not going to be a device for "everyone" - but I also believe that MS has a winner on their hands in the form of a truly productive, viable, and unique device that will ultimately be adopted much more widely in professional and enterprise environments than the "typical" consumer market - though I imagine it'll do quite well there as well - especially for students..
To answer your question - yes I'd recommend it and yes I'm keeping it..
I had the RT for 20 days and took it back for the pro.Would never recommend an RT for someone with similar wants and needs. I am so glad I did and the timing was perfect. It is what I wanted in a tablet/laptop.
Still waiting here in the UK.... :/
I've got an RT and once the Pro is out I'll get one, then the one I dont like will go to the tech here at work...
I have had the 128 for 6 days. So far, I am using it as a replacement for the HP envy15. I was already using windows 8 on a desktop, but windows 8 on a tablet is cool. The device gets a little warm, as I use it all day, but so far its great. You cant beat having access to legacy apps on a tablet. I cant wait for the app market to grow.
Love my pro
The 128 was never in stock but I have a 64 gb micro sd for storage.
This unit replaced my iPad mini and Lenovo Yoga 13.
Even though I bought it from Staples I was still able to get Microsoft complete warranty on it. Best $149 you can spend, it includes accidental.

You'll need a USB to ethernet adaptor with plug and play functionality on linux (most branded ones work I think) and then start up the tablet with the adaptor plugged in and connected properly etc. I think ubuntu then normally prompts for driver installs which it will do via the ethernet.
Using USB WiFi adaptor. I asked over in Ubuntu irc and they said there's a bug with the Marvell drivers and a fix is being issued.

Picked up at 128gb pro on monday. The build quality is great, but it's just a bit heavy to use as a tablet. It's doable, but really it's better suited sitting on a desk with the stand. I was previously using a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 but it was too slow to run certain programs needed for work (large excel sheets, MATLAB, Access, etc). The battery life is as advertise - I get around 5 hours with brightness at half. I thought I'd be able to stretch it to 6 hours but there really isn't much optimizing left to do so I haven't been able to. Compared to any arm based tablet, yea the battery life is weak but really it has the specs of a real laptop and compared to the MacBook Air 11" it has the same battery life with a better screen and weighs less so it's quite a nice machine imo. I didn't think I would need the digitizer and pen but I'm finding more ways to use it and it makes for a nice addition. I kind of wish Microsoft went with a 16:10 form factor though... 16:9 tablets are really just too narrow and awkward to be used in portrait mode when holding it like a tablet.

16:10 isn't going to make it any better in portrait mode. The Surface just isn't designed to be used in portrait mode. It's awkward and Metro is optimized for landscape mode.

There is a driver update if you do it through device manager. Can't check speeds till i get home.

Can you post the file for the update?
I've found a few surface pro 2's for sub 400 dollars, and I was wondering if it is still good in 2017, or if I should save up money for the SP4?
I really don't want the SP3 because of the throttling, and Ivy bridge on the SP1 is pretty old. A 4200u/4300u will suffice for me and the HD4400 is still pretty good for integrated graphics, so spec wise I like it on paper. I just want to know if the bigger screen size and keyboard is worth the +400$ price for the SP4.
P.S. I would also want to know some sub 400$ alternatives to the SP2, if you know any good ones, and if you did know one, I would like to know if it could run Windows 8.1, as I really don't like Windows 10.

I love my SP2. In fact, I'm typing my reply on it right now.
The later SP2 has the same guts as the SP3, but the same screen tech as the SP1. That means if you don't need the latest-and-greatest, you get decent power and all the accessories are really cheap.
I've got a newer one with 8GB RAM, and it's my mobile graphic design workstation. And I have the battery-keyboad, which keeps it alive even longer. I can easily get 10 hours out of this thing, if I'm not doing too much creative work on it.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for your respone, I made up my mind. I decided to go and get a Surface Pro 2, and I also got a Surface 2 because I wanted to do some testing with the windows RT. I'll report back once it arrives!
Yeah, I got a refurbished one off of Amazon, early July for $280. Got an i5-4300, 8gb RAMIA 256gb SSD. Also came with a Type Cover. I stole it basically. Great condition. Smooth upgrade to Win 10 as well
