[Q] Where do the RUU programs come from? - HTC Inspire 4G

I've used a downloaded RUU to "fix" my first failed root attempt and it was a lifesaver. Now the Gingerbread update for the Inspire 4G has 'leaked" but my simple question is, where do these come from in the first place? Do they come direct from HTC (like I imaging) and if they do, how can I get ahold of them without relying on less than great sources?

They ultimately come from HTC. The leaked RUUs are probably from employees of HTC. They are signed by HTC so you know that they haven't been tampered with.

To get hands on one, you should go to the service center and request for one ,maby they will agree, maby they will need to be offered a little price

Root the desire?

I consider buying this phone. But I don't want to before it's rooted. Thought we could discuss it here. Or is it delivered open?

Yesterday I was searching for the direct quote from Paul (modaco) regarding this; at least I think it was him who said this...
Basically, unless I made this up in my head, he (if it were him) stated that the oem unlock functionality built into the bootloader has been removed.
Of course this is all speculative until I can find that damn quote
I strongly doubt that this has the same oem unlock features as the Nexus. The OEM unlock is most likely only requested by Google, and I do not think that HTC will do the same thing. It would be awesome, no doubt about it, but hey, lets be realistic.
I guess we'll just have to wait until the device gets sent out to review.

Guess you're right. Hope there will be some kind of exploit we can use. Or a leaked RUU with eng SPL or anything.
Do we know who is going to root / make a custom rom for it?

I think (and hope) someone will manage to root it, unless it's delivered open. But at the moment we don't know.
Altoguh, I've heard that it's using the same radio and hboot as Nexus One. Therefore, they should be able to use the same ROMs.
hey it's almost 100% that it will be rooted! is there anything in the world of computers that is not hacked ??? if it's not like the same day of it's release like the nexus (which was even before its release) it will be rooted in some days!!!

I just hope that it's not that every good developer have bought Nexus One, and therefore doesn't bother trying to root the Desire.
i don't think so, as every enthusiast will try to have this phone. Also i see many "hackers" being involved in more than two or even three mobile phones very often in this forum so we hold our chance
This should prove to be interesting to watch unfold...
random thoughts...
-The usual suspects seem to be fully wrapped up in Nexus development. Hard not to be with such a fun device What does this mean for the desire? Not sure.
-oem unlock appears to not be present in the desire's rom. if the desire is built on the same everything else (with sense on top) as the nexus, which has not bee rooted any other way beyond oem unlock, I'm not sure how someone will circumvent the lockdown. Perhaps without oem unlock, people will be forced to get creative? *shrug*
-The desire's rom works on the nexus; to me this says one thing...there is little->no reason for anyone with an n1 to look into a desire as long as desire images keep leaking.
All random thoughts but it would seem that possibly the desire may wind up being a consumer product rather than a hobbyist product...only time will tell though
I hope it will be more then a consumer product. The reaseon I'm buying the desire is that it will be released in belgium the nexus one isn't.
Yeah, I'm intrigued about this too- ordered an HTC Desire earlier today for delivery beginning of April, but no idea if i'll be able to root it and stick a Nexus rom on it!
Will be keeping an eye on these threads, just about to pre-order the Desire.
Hi guys
preordered one too, coming from a Touch HD. Til now on the online shop I ordered its stated to arrive at the end of march. Hope they can hold this date. Cant wait to see this device beeing rooted

hmm, I really want a snapdragon+ phone with sense on t-mobile usa. or even just a snapdragon one that is for consumers.
It needs time, I think. Because it´s not to buy, I mean before the HTC Hero came out, do we know it has root? NO When it´s out it needs a little time, and we have root believe me.
sorry for my bad english
I have a few questions, i want to buy a htc desire but i come from winmo world so i don't understand everything...
If the phone doesn't get rooted...
-will it be still possible to install .apk directly on the phone ?
-will it be still possible to upgrade 'operators' roms to official or cooked roms ?

Nexus
I've got the Nexus One, and just wanted to point out a few things (from my perspective)
The Nexus one runs Desire / Sense - BUT flash in the camera is bad, and so is bluetooth. (I used to have a HTC Magic, running HTC Hero / Sense on it, never really worked as good as my friends Hero, so history repeats itself - even with my friend selling his Hero to buy a Desire
So there are a difference in the hardware
the Nexus was rooted very fast, but this is because Google intended the phone to be rooted, this is Google behavior, and clearly not HTC behavior.
I don't see why a developer finding a root method in the Nexus without using the google "practices" to root, would publish their findings for the Nexus, so there might be a couple of ways to root the Desire right when it comes out.
thats just my 2 cents. (For what they were worth)

But if the desire is rooted will it be possible for the custom/official roms ? are there custom "hardspl" who can be built like in windows mobile ? What are the requirements ?
(It scare the **** out of me to be stuck with an operator rom as you can see xD)

Article discussion: Failure to Launch – HTC’s Bootloader Policy

Given this relates directly to the Sensation and many of us wanting it unlocked, I felt this would be a good place to discuss this article. Please give it a read if you have not already:
Failure to Launch – HTC’s Bootloader Policy
All I have to say is this, I've REALLY been trying to be patient with HTC on this issue. But darn it, if they don't come through with an unlock for the Sensation that removes ALL THE LOCKS with NO STRINGS, I'm going to have to get something else.
Knowing there are multiple locks all over the Sensation, more than just the bootloader is really ticking me off big time .
Really I'll accept even if 3rd party developers unlock it all, but I don't want anything held back on my device.
My carrier is not getting the SGS II, but T-Mobile USA is getting the Samsung Hercules in September. So for me, that is the deadline. Either HTC or 3rd parties have the Sensation totally open by then or I'll buy Hercules.
Will wait and see
If HTC didnt change their policy at all, then WE ALL WILL WALK AWAY TO FREE UNLOCK BOOTLOADERS. If HTC is ready to loose Millions and Millions Money, then Let other compagny get our money and in return we receive FREEDOM.
An open bootloader is the primary reason I upgraded from my HD2 to a Galaxy SII instead of a Sensation. And it's paid off because there are already 2-3 custom roms for the Samsung and it was rooted weeks ago.
Bad decision by HTC, they have lost one customer in myself and I'm sure there are numerous others.
darnell i really dont see much sense in your thinking of course there is gonna be strings attached always been do you really think a company doesnt kno that someone bricked a phone and are trying to get a warranty from it... i couldnt care less i havent actually bricked any phones and if i did with my personal ill just go out and buy another one. but theres still work arounds to getting a new replacement for free or close to it

Seems Samsung and others have learned how to open things up. So I find my logic makes perfect sense.
Any thinking by HTC that normal users who have no clue about bootloders will buy phones will be in for a shock not only cause of the facebook/twitter thing but the fact that the bugs on the phones means people are sending them back. Radio drivers usually sort out most common bugs ie camera, gps, wifi/3g. If HTC think this is bad wait till Techradar and other popular sites magazines make a review. Any bugs will give the phone a poor score. I must add i do love my phone...just thinking of the bigger picture for everyone. Seeing as there are official htc roms knocking around some peeps on here would have hopefully sorted their phone problems without having to take theirs back or cancelling their contracts.

Dude go always go for the best deal you can get. Especially if you are tied to a contract.
I don't think they will be unlocked without strings, we have never had that. Don't forget all current HTC devices have been locked and have consequently been unlocked by many developers and not HTC. The big difference here is the way that they are locked, much more secure than previous.
We may get the ability to unlock and I hope we do but I don't think it will be official and thus not without strings.
Well I don't really care how we get an unlocked Sensation. If it comes via developers here I'll be just as happy. But given how HTC is trying to be difficult and then got my hopes up in talk about "reviewing" their policies. I'm at a point now where I'll take the best Sensation competitor once available on my carrier, if the Sensation is not unlocked by the time the competitor is available.
I'm not on contract. I have one of T-Mobile USA's older "no contract" plans, that is much cheaper monthly than their contract rates. So I have no problem paying full price for a device and given I'm going to pay a premium I don't want something that I can't fully customize. Since I have to pay in full outright, I want something I can do whatever I want with.
Even if HTC unlocks the Bootloader for the Sensation, T-Mobile will MAKE sure that the 4G version for their network is NOT. They do not want to deal with handset replacements due to idiots that don't know how to flash something on their phone. I"m sorry to say it brother cuz I'm in the same shoes as you, but you will never get an HTC unlocked boot loader so long as your on TMO USA.
You could, if you wanted to, switch to CrapT&T and get an SGSII. I think I read that it is the proper 3G bands for their network.
Either way, love that article!

Actually, that point doesn't apply as those phones are NOT sold or supported by T-Mobile. If warranty return is required you would NOT go through T-Mobile. T-Mobile does, however, offer support via a service rep for general issues, but not for returns/warranty issues. I don't remember when I got my Nexus One if you did warranty returns through Google or HTC. Either way, it was not T-Mobile.

Yea and folks using the T-Mobile USA G2X already have it rooted and custom ROMs.
So the Sensation is setting the bar higher than others in terms of lock-down and being hard to crack.
If Samsung leaves it unlocked, I believe the Hercules will be sold that way by T-Mobile.
With the Sensation, I highly suspect the new "HTC Watch" service is part of the reason they've locked it down so much. Like with Google's new movie service and Blockbuster recently locking their app down from rooted devices. HTC may be catering to movie studios more than even carriers.

This just posted on facebook:
HTC "There has been overwhelmi ngly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

Well, as I've read it somewhere else on this forum, a few others on this forum were thinking: "I want to know if this also counts for shipped phones", so they had the guts to send Mr. Chou himself a e-mail, asking him if the sensation was going to be unlocked as well. His reply was that in the future, they will make sure the shipped phones also get a unlocked bootloader.(couldn't find the original post, but I'm quit sure the topictitle was something like: "Htc will no longer lock bootlead" or something down that line)
Why dont they just add a counter like sgs2 has. Although its easy to reset, maybe they can find a more permanent solution. Modders/hackers know that we void our warranty with custom roms, rooting etc.
In my time reading forums I can somewhat understand where htc is coming from. So many noobs including myself until I got educated, do stupid things to there devices. When we cant figure out how fix them, we/they lie to these companies and try to get new/refurb devices.
I dont think HTC and others should lock their bootloaders. I do think that we as owners of these devices should be able to do as we please. But we all should be able to deal with whatever consequences companies choose.

[Q] Poll: Will you hold from buying a sensation untill it is S-OFF?

This is a poll to see how many people are waiting for news regarding the Sensation's S-OFF before buying
I really don't mind. I've used my HTC Hero with Stock rom 1½ years and that phone is slow compared to all the other ones. It would be great however.
My option isn't in the poll.

Yes I'm holding off til unlock

I'm pretty sure this phone will be S-Off sooner or later.
I will buy when i buy it. Doesn't matter if S-Off comes later.
The earlier the S-Off comes, the earlier Dev team to optimize it,
The earlier my life will be organize and productive.. The better.
Hope this phone is good built. Then this will be Epic of my life,
Hope will last for 3 years i hope.
I'm still not convince about its built.
Im afraid will fall and break immediately.
but sexy she is. When it falls, hope she wont scar.
Sensation conspiracy theory...
The problem for me is as follows:
I could get a sensation from vodafone at retail price since last week.
What scares me is that HTC hasnt made clear what they will do with the bootloader.
What if they provide an S-OFF only for the unbranded units that will start selling in Europe next week?
That will be a problem for me...
Maybe that is why they are keeping silent regarding the unlocking of the sensation's bootloader.
They could be waiting for the vodafone exclusivity to end.
The same could hold true for Tmobile as well....
Any comments on this?
I already ordered the phone...so you know my vote. I dont mind waiting for a way to manually unlock the bootloader and install custom roms. Until that happens, i will still have a pretty awesome device...win/win
I just picked up the phone last night...I couldn't hold out any longer. My G1 and HD2 were too outdated and I found this to be a worthy replacement (finally). I CAN wait for the S-OFF.
Its going to be hard to wait for me too as soon as the sensation is sold unbranded in Europe...

Just been holding off till the exclusivity ends :/
Bought mine today (Branded T-Mobile USA); and I love my MyTouch4G with Cyanogenmod on it...
We at least need to get temp root soon so we can get some of this damn T-Mobile bloatware off... Damn thing has more fat in it then container of pure lard.
I voted yes to waiting. But tbh, if it isn't unlocked soon, I'm just gonna wait for something else later. No point in buying it if there's a better phone coming soon after unlock.
Side note: It doesn't hurt me to wait, but it hurts HTC to take to long.
I'd love to get it but I'm waiting.. canceled my preorder.
Apart from the ability to customise OUR own phone as we wish I need root as paid applications are not available where I live. I also need to be able to backup and restore my data incase of a factory reset ... etc.
Let's see if that happens before a better phone is announced.

I'm still unsure. I bought the Incredible S a couple of months ago and sold it 3 weeks later because it was s-on and no root/s-off solution was coming up.
Now I'm torn between getting the Sensation when it's s-off or waiting for the European Evo 3D. I like the Sensation design better but Evo 3D has better specs.
I'm just keeping my good ol' Desire for now and see what happens during the Summer!
Bought mine on Sunday 6/12. I don't mind waiting

[Poll] Returning my HTC Sensation

I decided to also make this post a poll. Will you return your HTC Sensation?
For everyone that is frustrated with the bootloader, you may want to follow suit. Don't hang onto this phone past your return policy time if you will be unhappy if it's not unlocked.
HTC haven't been able to definitively say "Yes we are unlocking the bootloader for the HTC Sensation." It seems all articles and re-posts that claim this will happen are quoting vague references and canned responses. I personally emailed them (as have many) to ask if it will be unlocked and all responses are (paraphrased) "We cannot say if it will be, but keep watching our media channels - facebook, twitter, etc". I went as far as trying to escalate to corporate (politely) and they were still unable to confirm if the HTC Sensation would or would not be unlocked.
So far zero confirmation. That's also zero confirmation on the reverse - they haven't definitively said they won't either. Grid lock.
What *has* been confirmed is that future devices will sport an unlocked bootloader. I'm willing to wait for this! This does not include the HTC Sensation or recent EVO.
I am returning my HTC Sensation to the store with 1 week left on my 30 day return policy. If they manage to deliver an unlocked bootloader between now and when the next device comes out I will gladly re-purchase the phone as the hardware and experience have been fantastic. Unfortunately being a fellow tweaker, I too want the ability to use custom roms and especially not be locked to a manufacturer's release schedule for Android updates. I went through too many let downs using a locked Motorola Android phone and will no longer be supporting locked devices full stop. Android is meant to help us be free of certain restrictions imposed by other operating systems and carriers.
I'm willing to wait for a non-bootloader locked phone with killer specs.
Sadly returning the device for now. Feel free to let us all know if you will also be, or have already returned your phone in hopeful anticipation of a completely open device.
Cheers all!
As I have said..You all are misinformed. As it was told to me was the bootloader unlocking tool will be a part of the htc dev tools site that will be launching soon. I suggest you relax, keep your phone and see how it goes. Not that serious to start a revolution over. Especially when it can be coming any day now.
No problems. I can handle the flames, but also understand that people are sick of this. We can close this thread.
holding onto the phone may not be viable if there is fear that we won't be getting bootloaders unlocked. I have a limited time frame for when I can return this phone...

I am also in the late stages of deciding to return the Sensation. It is a wonderful phone but many issues and no real answer about unlocking the bootloader(actual and factual info about when -where- and how.)and no word about updates and whether or not they will fix all of the issues. I am only speaking for me but I find it increasingly harder to keep and support a device that has numerous documented issues with no announced plan to fix them from HTC and nothing about unlocking the bootloader, except vague promises.. I also would like the link to the thread about dev tools.
If you're that sad that a locked bootloader is going to make you return your phone then you need to get out more. Get over it and just wait
No it's a great phone and works, with a few quirks, great. We already have received an update after one month so in 2-3 months we will receive the next update which will update the phone to a bug free heaven.
Besides, it's already possible to disable apps so I'm going to install Launcher Pro as soon as I'm bored with Sense. Have used Sense for 2 years on my Hero so I will survive.
This phone gonna be out g2x here i come .

You knew this phone had a locked bootloader when you bought it. It's funny how everyone is *****ing about it when they damn well knew it was locked. And what? Since HTC didnt release the unlocked bootloader a few weeks after the phone launches that's too long? Do I want my bootloader unlocked? HELL YEAH! Am I going to sit here and ***** and moan about it because HTC hasnt unlocked it yet? NO, because I knew I was buying a phone with a locked bootloader when I bought it. HTC Has said they will unlock the bootloader, they just didnt give an exact date as to when it would be unlocked. Even if HTC changes their minds, someone will get it unlocked eventually. Just look at the G2! That's never been officially unlocked..
I'm really tired of seeing all these posts with people *****ing about the bootloader.. YOU KNEW THIS WHEN YOU BOUGHT THE PHONE.. so 1. Dont buy the effing phone until it's unlocked or 2. stop *****ing that it's locked and just be patient!!! It's quite SIMPLE..
People knew it was locked but we also had the impression it would get unlocked that's the main reason people bought it. From what we hear htc aint unlocking **** , point blank they could of just told people its not going to be unlocked on Facebook and just ended it there instead of keeping hope alive. OMG! really? what you hear must be different from what the rest of us hear, because judging on what I read in the forums they tell everyone the same thing. They are committed to what they said and they are working on getting it going. The phone hasnt even been out for a full month yet and so many of you are crying foul on HTC's part. When I spoke to someone there, they said yes they did get a memo about informing them about the new policy. She told me the newer phones (released in late summer/early fall) will come shipped with unlocked bootloaders and they were working on an update for both the sensation and evo3d(which at the time I spoke to her wasnt even released yet). She told me the techs think it's going to be a nightmare for them because of all the noobs bricking their devices. I'm sure they already have S-off ready but right now they are trying to figure out the best way to implement it. Just because they didnt unlock it in the first 4 weeks of release doesnt mean they lied! People need to have patience. I mean they have to figure out how they are going to do it and also brace themselves and be ready for tons of noobs calling in saying they ****ed up their device. There is more to it than "hey it's ready push it out"
For example, will it be a OTA update? I think they will try to not make it so easy so every tom **** and harry could **** up their phone. Will we have to call in and request it special? will we have to send our devices into HTC and have them unlock it for us? I'm sure the logistics are what they are working on now. But how you get they are lying from all the info people have gotten is amazing. They keep saying they are standing behind it, and that there will be a update of some kind to unlock it. The only thing they havent told us is WHEN. And if they did give us a date and then couldnt make the deadline then you would be saying the same ****, that they lied and would prob be even more pissed off. I honestly dont see it happening until late aug or sept. But I'm sure by then one of us devs will break it or get a leaked Hboot

I have to vote no because that other dual core from tmobile has an older android version and less RAM. And besides-the screen on my HTC HD2 is so unrelieable right now I gave it to my 3yr old son to play angry birds with

I guess you are referring to the G2x? It does have Froyo stock but I hear CM7 got a lot more stable for it(I'm going to try it again). I run Faux's GB rom on my G2x. and it's pretty stable for me.
The ram issue? Sure the G2x has only 512 but I NEVER had a time when I didnt have at least 90-100mb of free ram and that's when everything I use is open and running in the background. Someone once said if you have that much available ram at all times even when you open everything up then it's pretty much wasted ram. When I got the G2x I came from the MT4G and I was REALLY concerned about having 768 and having to go to 512. But Cyanogen himself when he got the g2x said the 512 of ram was perfectly fine and there were no issues with it having only 512. When I read that I felt better about making the switch. And yes it does have less ram than the sensation but at this point and time my G2x blows my sensation out of the water speed and performance wise. I love my sensation and cant wait until we can see what this thing can really do
You guys are nitpicking about something you already knew about. So what does that make u?
I still got the phone knowing what I was getting. I came from the g2x and the nexus s and I don't regret getting rid of both.
The bootloader will be unlocked. We have root now and overclock so take that and have fun with it. Stop being impatient. This isn't the Atrix I'm sure it won't take that long lol.
If u want it that bad....start developing the unlock yourself or sit down and Stfu.

[Q] unlocked bootloader

so the bootloader will be unlocked in august, the question being if t mobile wont allow the update can the devs do something about it
I cant post the link but just Google HTC sensation, on engadget twitter
yah im sorry guys
seems couple of people posted this at just about the same time, and i guess the question is out of place now?
i think the major concern is if the carriers are willing to push said update, im almost certain they wont, at least not for a while.
thats why i still have confidence in teamwin's amazing efforts, teamwin ftw
wouldn't it be just a software lock or something like that if the carrier locked it, is that easy to break ?
T-mobile won't give us nothing fast smh just rely on one of the devs to get it done.
