Cellular South decided to pay out my contract or cap my data and minutes to 100mb and 700 minutes. Any suggestions on carriers and phone? I travel the southern states constantly.

Man that sucks. I don't know if USCC is in your area. But I am very happy with my service with them. I was also with Sprint for a few years and was happy with my coverage. Not so much with Customer service, But that has been a few years ago so things might have changed.

Their reason was I consume too much data out of town, and more than needed. I think they believe I am teathering or something, but I havent ever even tries that. I guess I will be swapping to att.

Actually, ever since I jumped the CS ship and went to AT&T I couldn't be happier. Their Signal strength kicks the $hit outta CS. I got a BEST of -86dbm on CS, on AT&T I've gotten down to -56dbm... Signal consistantly is better than CS everywhere I go. I travel all over the state, and have way better coverage. I've had zero dropped calls so far, and zero data "time outs"... Data is waaaaaaaaay faster too. Getting 3-5+Mbps Down on AT&T vs. 800Kbps-1.1Mbps Down on CS. Well that is if the connection didn't time out. Lol. AT&T is also Buying out CS ETF's up to $200 right now. Only downfall I've seen so far are the prices of the plans, but ya gotta pay to play. Also nice to be able to pop your Sim card in whatever phone you wanna run that day. ha
Thanks for your feedback. I think the only problem I will encounter is a big ass deposit. Sally Mae shows up on my credit never fails lol

That blows... Since you're traveling across several states, having a Nationwide Carrier will be more beneficial.. Especially if you're outta town and break or lose your phone. I'm sure they'll have a store fairly close. Sucks when you're in Florida, and Kill your CS phone. Screwed until you get back to MS.. Been there. lol

Probably roaming agreements. Why not try T-Mobile? We roam on AT&T towers if your unlucky enough to go on roaming, have the best 3G EVER (T-Mobile 4G is advanced 3G, so 21mbps 3G sounds nice), and the plans are SUPER cheap.

Yes they have roaming agreements. Cellular South's CEO actually mentioned this yesterday at the Senate Judiciary Committee on Antitrust's hearing on the AT&T/T-Mobile merger.

Yeah, but T-mobile's data svc around MS blows as of now. 2G Damn near EVERYWHERE I went.. very spotty 3G. Had a G2X and a G2. Great phones, just wish they had the svc to match around here because they do have awesome plans. We'll see what happens with the merger. Would be beneficial for both companies, but they would have the GSM market cornered..

G2x supposedly does NOT contain AT$T 3G bands as previously advertised. As for home coverage, T-Mo is supposed to be launching an in-home signal booster for free (with 2-yr contract, probably doesn't effect upgrade timeline but haven't verified that) pretty soon. I think within the next week.

My understanding is the booster needs to be connected to your broadband internet router to work. So you will be using your internet bandwidth to use mobile voice and data. What a scam...
And any one visiting you (or you neighbor) with a t-mobile connection will use that signal (your internet) and pay t-mobile for that.

Hopefully your "source" isn't an otherwise reputable source of information because you (they) couldn't be more wrong. I have been a part of the beta for these boosters for the past 6 months. All it does is take a weak 3G signal (which means you must get 3G somewhere in your house for this to work) and amplifies it throughout your house. In my case in an upstairs window I got a weak 3G signal so I put the receiver in the window and the transmitter in my living room. Now I get between 1 and 6mbps down throughout my entire house. There is not even a way to connect this thing to a home internet router. I don't even have home internet.
I'd be curious to know where you heard this.
Oh and the G2x does not work on AT&T 3G bands. I have been in several states with no T-Mobile coverage and have used AT&T instead, but only on Edge.

I didn't intend to sound overtly defensive, I just don't like when people start using the "scam" word when this couldn't be further from a scam. This device kicks ass and tmo wants to give it out for free in exchange for people's business. This device is normally $500 so this program is great. Hopefully they will also offer the equipment at full retail price for those uncomfortable signing or extending a contract.

Lots of countries are messed up. We just finally got all the carriers providing 3G here in Thailand. Two of them are providing 3G on 850Mhz (DTAC and TrueMove), one is on 900Mhz and the other is on 2100Mhz. A big grab bag. An AT&T phone will get 3G on two of them. Some TMO phones get 3G on the other one. But all phones get it on the 2100 carrier. I am using my G2X on 2100Mhz here (TOT3G) and my Nexus One on 900Mhz (AIS). So the USA isn't the only country with non-unified 3G bands.

The cities included in this initial wave are Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Although users in those metro areas will still have very few LTE devices to choose from. Unlike Verizon, which has multiple LTE handsets, AT&T has no phones compatible with the new network. AT&T launched a data stick and a portable hotspot for the LTE network last month. The carrier has also started selling a massively overpriced Android tablet, the HTC Jetstream.
sweet im in San Antonio for a little while, now for AT&T to get some phones for me to use !!!
Now if they could hurry up and increase the HSPA+ speeds. I'm still only getting 3.5mb download and 1mb upload in downtown Dallas.... iPhone 3gs gets about the same download speed, although only half of the upload speed.
Come to the other side of the Metroplex. Downtown Fort Worth and I am getting 5-7mb down, 1.1-1.3 up. I can't wait for the Holiday with LTE. That will be SO sweet.

As mentioned, you would need a LTE phone first. But, being an hour away from Houston, I wouldn't run out and buy one when they become available. I live in the outskirt of Houston and HSPA+ is non existent at home. In Houston where I work, as posted, I am just now seeing the true benefit of HSPA+. Probably some bottlenecks from ongoing upgrades being freed up, maybe a little congestion as well.

Knowing how AT&T operates, I'd imagine they opened up more bandwidth to the land-based lines to the area first to make sure their LTE debut went well and you're just seeing some of that extra bandwidth.

I'm not as stupid as you. I know when I'm on wifi. Here is the proof.
Here are some from earlier today. The first two were indoors, a large metal building with offices above on the second floor. The first run was bad, only 2800kbps, but I did hit 4916kbps on the second. I then went outdoors and tested a lil slower than yesterday, but not by much, 6485-7767kbps. I know we can't put too much stock in the Speed Test app, but there is some consistency and I'm getting much higher runs than I had been. Also, it seems to be reading my wifi at home with some accuracy.

Show me where I made that statement. I stated that since the LTE launch, my data speeds have suddenly increased and I'm finally seeing true hspa+, and that is a fact. I provided a couple of possible reasons for this, as someone else cited a possibility as well. I know what you saw. You saw the hosted by Comcast in the screenshot. Lol. Anybody with half a brain would know that there would have been a wifi icon in the status bar if I was on wifi. Next time you open your mouth, try not to put your foot in it. Your little signature says it all. Just because you are in a crummy area, doesn't mean it is like that everywheres.
Check my screenshot of prior tests and tell me if you see any improvement compared to yesterday and today. LOL.

I'm good. I just don't appreciate someone implying I'm either stupid or I'm a liar. It certainly isn't inconceivable that while AT&T was building the LTE network here in Houston, they were improving the backhaul for hspa+. Need to vent here. Have ATT / Infuse unlimited data plan, etc.
My signal sucks and i live in city center los angeles
i have to use a hacked up microcell in order to get that to give me ok boost but still not what it should. In my house, without microcell I get ZERO bars..
Unlocked my device a few days ago (easy thank you forums for one click)
picked up a $10 PAY AS YOU GO sim card at TMOBILE.
Reset Factory / WITH Tmobile number SIM card inside and lord or lord...
FACTS:
--- FIVE BARS EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE! NOT ONE SIMPLE HICCUP OF SERVICE.
--- DATA speeds on TM registered as EDGE though I am going tell all truly, its not. IT IS 4G + more. I have been testing and getting D/L speeds (w/WiFi off) of 15-18MBPS
Mind you, this is consistently when phone is on TM
--- More FUN....market instantly downloaded TM stock apps (obviously thinking its their phone) though there is a problem here. TMOBILE grants my phone FULL TELENET GPS SOFTWARE 24/7. --- ATT charges $10.00 a month for their crappy version.
---- More FUN x2 - TM grants me a full FREE unlimited use of QIK video chatting. No software restrictions. AT&T charges you I believe $5.00 a month to have the extras, on a network that it really doesn't work half the time.
How good is the VIDEO chatting & Mess? ITS AWESOME, ITS FAST & ITS QUICK no waiting no hiccups, etc. etc.
When I transfer ATT SIM back in the video chatting software remains full unlocked though its nearly useable.
I now have to come to believe that ATT is truly the problem. the phone explosed with power + fun on a network that can handle the infuse + or allow it to be run as a killer phone.
As long as ATT remains on delivery its wireless customers the worst mobile service ever, sadly most infuse users will never get to see the push & power that really is inside the INFUSE.
while att makes more money than ever, continues with the mega-mergers back and forth over and over - passing the billl 9 rate increases on to its customers.
THIS HONESTLY IS INEXCUSABLE. ---
though on a good note...the phone rocks on TM just for reference.
No issues here.
Running off MIUI Rom
Uhhh correct me if im wrong here, but AT&T does not charge for the use of QIK does it?
Sorry, this is bull. I worked for Tmobile for a long time and i'm familiar with an HSPA+ network, and in order to even get near those speeds on an HSPA+ 21 device you'd have to have the utmost prefect network conditions on their
AWS band.
AT&T has no AWS band. Also, you'd be hard pressed to find even an HSPA+ 42 device on Tmobile that would get those speeds. A device seldom gets near the theoretical max unless you're in a testing zone with no congestion from other users and no issues with interference, signal propagation, etc...
You'd only see those speeds on WiFi with the Infuse, unlocked on Tmobile's network, else EDGE speeds would be around 50kbps or less.
If you want to prove it, take a speed test with the Ookla app and post the screen shot here.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
att doesnt pass bill rate increases unless the customer upgrades plans. you are entitled to the contract you siged with the old provider and in many cases you can renew it seemingly indefinately. i know people with basic phones that still pay cell one bills.
also you must live in a very good city for t-mobile. att rules in my area though mos people are brainwashed into having verizon plans. we got h+ here and i get 10-11 mbps down. verizon is lucky to get 1mbps and often falls back to a 1g symbol on some phones.
as for t-mobile, in my area it is very spotty. sounds like you found happyness with them and so do many others, more power to you guys, if t-mo was viable for me i'd switch but it's not. though the h+ on t-mo with the infuse sounds sketchy and the speeds are the only posible utmost perfect scenario.
i believe .15-.18 MBPS but 15-18 naw.
just look at the screen name. tells the whole story.

Do this. Load a custom ROM and change wireless settings to 2G networks. You will have 5 bars wherever you are, even on AT&T.
Curious about this myself, I pulled out my old T-mo prepaid sim I keep as a backup for when my contract is up, fired it up, and tried using some data. I got EDGE speeds in a H+ area with T-Mo. T-Mo has faster EDGE than AT&T but certainly not the speeds you're claiming. Not saying what you said was BS but it is either location dependent or my Infuse just sucks. Then again, I get about 8mbps down 2 up on AT&T where I live...

Amen to that!! I have been with ATT since 2004..i am testing different modems as we speak. I wonder does anyone know is there a way to know what modem is best for a certain area?? I searched and searched ATT and NEVER get anywhere. I don't even know and can't seem to find out what typical speeds should be for me. I live in Northern CA. about 8 miles from town...there is actually an ATT store here that offers NO help. If the weather is right, wind, clouds, and if i stand on one foot and spin MAYBE i get like on average 1.60mbps down. the highest i have ever gotten is 4.00 ...thought it was a fluke. I am on my 4th modem to test. UCKj1 seems to be better FOR me than KK1 (aweful), Ki3 (ok), and Ki4 (not so much).

The real problem is, what carrier has good service and support? Have friends on all major carriers and they all stink. The best one of the bunch is Sprint who has crap coverage and 3g only around my area. Best thing about then is the 10 bucks a month they tack on for having a 4g phone that does not get 4g, what a joke! I see lots of ATT slamage but I don't see what make the others any better. Ok they have the slowest feauxG of all but that is LOTS better than charging more for nothing.
Some people say its just like using AT&T but I looked at the coverage map for android users and it looks pretty bad, is this map misleading or is that really how it is?
At&t doesn't have the best coverage. When you own an at&t contract your phone will share cell towers from other cariers when yours is nowhere to be found. This act is called roaming. It is a transparent process that takes place without any human intervention.
Most large cellphone carriers have exchange agreements where they share their towers for free with one another. Under circumstances where roaming is not free, a small charge is billed to your account, or often that charge is waved and payed for by at&t.
Tldr, other carriers roam for free. Yours doesn't (apparently).

I'm doing well on AT&T, but i live in Chicago, a big AT&T city soo yeah.
But there are a few forum members on straight talk, and they all seem to like it.
I'm using Straight Talk. I'm glad I switched. Same coverage for only $45.

I think he was asking if Straightalk has the same coverage as at&t, not the definition of roaming.

I have the International HOX on Straight Talk. I always have full service (knock on wood) in Indianapolis.
i have straight talk with ATT sim card and I live in Evansville, In...great service but I know Straight Talk uses both ATT and T-Mobile towers just depends on the sim card you order
I'm using Straight Talk in Upstate NY, so far I haven't had any coverage issues. I've used it in Florida, NYC, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington; all with no coverage issues and for data my phone usually shows the H or 4G(Depending on which icon set I use) on the HOX.
I'm using my One X on StraightTalk in Southern California (Orange County, Inland Empire & Los Angeles) and it works GREAT. Using the AT&T SIM card. I usually get download speeds around 5 mbps.
Can't beat that for $45/month! :highfive:
I live in Puerto Rico and visit my father in orlando every few months and the coverage is exactly the same as when i had att. download speeds 5-8mbps and i pay less than half of what i used to pay with att.

I was a long time AT&T user and switched to Straight Talk and have kept the same signal strength in Kentucky wherever I go. The only difference I even noticed was when paying my bill.
Yeah, I have a NET10 BYOD sim and its basically the same as straight talk (50 a month but 45 if you setup bill pay online). My service appears to be exactly the same as when I had AT&T post paid.
The only difference is you will get HSPA+ speeds and not LTE.

So glad to hear this. Waiting for my contract to run out before I switch and I want something with good coverage. I think the only disappointing thing is lack of LTE.
