[GUIDE] How to S-OFF your 1.47.x ROM with Revolutionary (without downgrading) - HTC Desire S

First of all, please let me thank all the people involved into this process:
o unrevoked and AlphaRevX teams (for their great tools)
o davidreece (for reporting the temp root method) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190992
Since Revolutionary is not able (yet) to acquire root access on our ROM, I thought I'd get a temp root access BEFORE launching Revolutionary.
As a matter of facts I have successfully S-OFFed my device running the latest 1.47.401.4 ROM (HBOOT 0.98.0002).
I could not test this method on any other ROM version, but as long as you are able to get temp root using the commands below, you should be safe to go.
So let's get straight to the instructions:
PREREQUISITES:
o You know what you are doing. Messing up with your NAND implies a risk that you should be aware of.
o Android SDK installed. Download the "android-win-tools" from the following link otherwise (thanks .sh4d0w.) and extract the files to your \Windows directory: http://www.4shared.com/file/KK6KvF7Q/android-win-tools.html
HOW TO:
o Get your version of Revolutionary from their site: http://revolutionary.io/
o Ensure your device has "Debug USB" enabled and is connected to your PC in "Charge only" mode.
o Download fre3vo from the following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=661246&d=1311240968
o Open a command prompt and issue the following commands to get temp root access: (thanks again, davidreece!)
Code:
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
adb shell [i](you'll get a $ prompt)[/i]
/data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FAA90000 -end FFFFFFFF [i](you should be kicked off adb shell and get back to your command prompt)[/i]
adb shell [i](you should get a # prompt now)[/i]
exit
o DO NOT disconnect or switch your device off!!
o Now that your phone has temporary root access, launch Revolutionary and follow instructions on screen.
o In a matter of seconds you will see the new HBOOT in place
o You may want to answer Y when prompted whether to install CWM or not. It will install the new 4.0.1.4 version of the tool.
o Download the attachment below and flash it via CWM. It will install su and Superuser.apk. Restart your phone and you'll end up with a rooted stock rom.
You should be able to achieve the same results on Linux as well.
That's it, folks.

thank you
but got this problem :
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.

thank you!!! Worked! Perfect!

Add this to the tutorial.
Copy content on adb-win-tools from here>> http://www.4shared.com/file/KK6KvF7Q/android-win-tools.html
To C:/Windows
This is for:
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.
Because most of us don't have those files preinstalled in windows.

for HBOOT 0.98.0000, you don't need the temp root right?

Right, i can confirm it works without temp root
Only have Debuging on and phone in charge only, and run the program

Hi guys,
My DS is S-OFF now too , but GingerBreak 1.2 seems doesn't work. It still shows rotating circle but nothing happens. Any ideas ?

Yes, you're right. I can use prerooted stocked rom or some custom rom. Thanks.

Hi All, followed instructions as laid out. When using revolutionary it hangs waiting for fastboot. Any Idea's?
Thanks

Thanks a lot for this one... I have added this to my FAQ section on this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16000143#post16000143.
Hope you don't mind

Thanks, it worked. It was a long night
Thanks again!

No, you are right and should be fine
All of the custom roms come pre rooted anyway, So simply flash one from recovery as you suggested and you'll be ok

hi can you post a tutorial on how to s-off my device. I'm noob at this. I'm currently downloading ubuntu installer for windows. Thanks
1) have an ubuntu available (I use ubuntu 11.04)
2) install OpenJDK (java) on ubuntu (if you dont have Java yet)
3) download the Android SDK from developer android website
4) untar (tar xvf filename.tgz)
5) run tools/android
6) install 'Android SDK Platform-tools' and 'Android Compatibility package'
7) make sure your Desire is in USB Debug mode
8) run 'platform-tools/adb devices', and expect to see 1 device, I have one named '???????' but works for me
9) download and run alpharev (as root with sudo)
10) copy the serial from alpharev and get the key in alpharev website
11) introduce the key in command line
12) some reboots and get s-off!!!!
13) installs clockworkmod recovery if you want
xx) Profit!
no... wait we are not in slashdot
I wouldn't bother installing linux, just do it from a cd. No need to install sdk or adb or anything other than alpharevx.

You don't need to adb.
Just open the terminal and cd to the downloaded alpharevx folder then type "sudo ./alpharevx"
You don't need adb, alphrevx works without it.
1. Exctract alpharevx to an easily reachable place (ex. Desktop)
2. Start terminal and get to that place (with cd command)
3. Run "sudo ./alpharevx"
I think you need to enable HTC Sync mode on your phone but not sure.
ok so i managed all that now it's stuck on alpharevx waiting for device...
I'm doing this on ubuntu through vmware. Could that be the problem?
USB debugging is on by the way!
oh it's also on HTC sync mode.
Virtual machine's hardware access may be limited, don't know. I've ran linux from USB flash.

Since the milestones bootloader is locked, we cannot create sbf files to flash on it. The only ones are stock eclaire, stock froyo, and the got 2.2.1 leak. All are signed by motorola. It is for that reason that it is impossible for you to attain this. I would suggest re-downloading androidiani openrecorvery to your sd card, and trying again, because thats the only way your gunna get miui. You could also try minimod openrecovery.
Just do what they are saying, flash a signed Motorola sbf, then root it and get Androidiani running and use it to flash MIUI.
Try this or this. Make sure you have openrecovery on your sdcard and miui in your updates folder.

There is no need to press any keys.
1. First extract a fresh copy of AOR to sdcard. Then copy miui zip file under updates folder
2. Next, activate usb debugging mode in your phone and connect to pc.
3. Open up command prompt and enter the following commands in order.
Code:
adb devices ( this should show as your phone being connected )
adb shell "echo 'boot-recovery ' > /cache/recovery/command"
adb shell "echo '--update_package=SDCARD:update.zip' >> /cache/recovery/command"
adb shell "reboot recovery"
That's it. Your AOR should load.

You could also use Google, as you can find detailed guides that start at installing drivers for windows, that you probably don't have.
And, as I understand that your phone works, you can always use terminal emulator from market, which doesn't need the drivers and works exactly like using adb through windows cmd line.

Haha. You need to have android sdk installed to get adb working. Or as Jack said, try the commands using TE, without the adb shell and without the quotes.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
using jacks idea is great, yes my cell is working... i have installed and whenever i put in a command it says permission denied
this states that most probably my cell is not rooted yet
i tried using androot and it does give the temporary root and fails on permanent root, but still i cant execute any command in te
please b patient and help
Try z4root for rooting your phone. And install android sdk. There are many sticky threads telling you how to install android sdk.

As everyone told you already, because of the locked bootloader you can't flash any .sbf you want. Only Motorola's and GOT's that has vulnerable recovery injected.
To flash MIUI rom, use OpenRecovery and flash the .zip file.

[Q] Problems With CMB command prompt. HELPPP

Hi i'm having a problem trying to get my evo shift Perm Rooted. There's like 4 different guides that i've found on how To root an Evo or even more specifically the Shift. I've followed all these guides and still no luck.
I already have my phone Temp Rooted through VISIONary, my problem happens when I have to go to the CMB (Command Prompt)
8. Next, Open the command prompt (Start > Run > type "cmd") and paste the following...
Code:
cd C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools
Hit enter, and type the following...
Code:
adb
If adb runs you're golden. Type this...
Code:
adb shell
Hit enter, you will see this...
Code:
$
Now type...
Code:
su
I make it to where I need to type in adb shell and what it says is adb server is out of date. killing... *daemon started successfully*
Then it shows the $ sign.
What i'm supposed to do now is type su
Then when I do it says su: permission denied
This is where i'm lost at. I followed everybody's instructions perfectly but cant move on till I get pass this... Can anyone help me please?
Thank you
What Android version are you on?
2.2 ?
2.3.3 ?
2.3.4 ?
Check the permissions under properties of adb.exe (right-click adb.exe and select properties) in your sdk/platform-tools folder. Make sure it is allowed to run as a program.

NO DO NOT UPGRADE!!! If your on 2.2 it's very easy. Just download and use THIS TOOL. It will do it all for you. Just connect the device via USB Cable, and choose charge only. Extract the Zip file that you downloaded onto your desktop, and run the program. Then click the ROOT Button. Make sure your Anti-Virus and Firewall are disabled before you start. Then just follow the Prompts. When it's all done go to the Play Store ( Android Market ) download Rom Manager Free. Open up Rom Manager follow the prompts to Flash CWM Recovery. That's it your Rooted with a Custom Recovery.

You need adb working... In order for adb to work you need to have android debugging checked under Settings > Applications > Development on your phone. It's not enabled by default on Sense roms so you'll need to make sure it's enabled and turned on.

All good about asking questions. When the message pops up asking for SuperUser Permission, you have to click yes. Otherwise it will not run.
I ended up factory restoring my phone and followed a youtube video for the same exact guide that you told me to use. I followed it step by step and now my phone works perfect. I appreciate all the help.
Instead of me creating a new post, can you recommend a good guide for me to flash my shift to boost mobile?

You need to have AndroidSDK installed or atleast have fastboot executable.
Once you have that, you can either set the path in environment variables or just go to that path using command line and use the fastboot command.
You should follow this instruction, it's very helpful.

I just rooted my first Android device the day before yesterday. One problem I ran into is that the Android SDK now installs to "C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk" instead of "C:\android-sdk" like most instructions give.
These are the instructions I followed to root my phone: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nexus_S:_Full_Update_Guide (Sorry for the lack of a link. I just found out I'm not able to post links because I'm new )
They helped me out a lot but it took a lot of time and concentration to get it done. Just keep in mind where Android SDK installs and change the paths to the new path when you need to.

Installing CM13 on untouched HTC Desire S

Hi lovely people,
I'd like to install CM13 on my HTC Desire S S510e. I have found way too many different instructions on how to proceed and I was wondering if there's a simple, step-by-step (I really mean step-by-step) guide on how to do it. By now, as far as I understand I should:
1. S-OFF my phone (although I heard it's possible to install a custom rom even with S-ON?). I've read that you can do it using HTCDev or Alpharev. However the HTC Desire S doesn't appear on the list of supported devices in the first link. Which device should I select from the list? On the other hand, the Alpharev website says that Alpharev is deprecated and one should use Revolutionary but the Revolutionary website is empty. Finally a more general question: what's the benefit of using HTCDev or Alpharev?
2. Flash sagaopt TWRP 2.8.7.1. I use ArchLinux. In Linux I'd have to install android-tools to have adb and fastboot, then do "adb reboot bootloader" followed by "fastboot flash recovery TWRP-recovery-sagaopt-2.8.7.1.img"? Or do I have to first install an older version of TWRP to convert my sdcard to EXT4 to then install the sagaopt 2.8.7.1 version?
3. Use TWRP to convert my sdcard to EXT4.
4. Install cm-13.0-XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-sagaopt.zip and gapps by putting the files into the sdcard using adb (what's the command to do this?) and then flash the files using TWRP.
What steps am I missing? What are the perils? What should I be particularly careful with?
Please help me understand and condense the heaps of information found in this forum.
Thanks,
Ricardo

CM13 is to heavy for the phone CM12.1 is stable but slow (sometimes you miss a call because the mobile is too slow) CM11 is fast but old (i used CM12.1 now im using CM11 nightly but the gallery doesnt play videos i deleded it)
Thank you for reposting that guide and for suggesting CM11 instead of CM12.1 or CM13. In that guide it says that unlocking the 2.02 s-on using the htcdev tool doesn't work for him if I understand correctly. Also I went to the htcdev website and they say that the tool will remove all personal data including applications, text messages and personalized settings. However I wanted to install a recovery and make a backup of the phone as it is now and that wouldn't work if everything gets removed before installing the recovery. Is there a way to install a recovery without removing anything?

I think you can try titanium backup with an oneclickroot (kingroot or framaroot) or unlock it with the risk of loosing data first backup contacts/sms and callhistoy with apps of the playstore and your sdcard isnt affected
Oh i could be that you need the win8+ fastboot fix for htcdev http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-s/general/guide-fix-fastboot-windows-8-1-t2858337
and if it doesnt work use windows 7 (dont forget to install htc sync)
if its 2.00.0002/2.00.2000 you can s-off it if its 2.02.0002 its ****ty
I use linux. It's 2.00.0002 so I guess I should follow step 4, but step 4.4 asks me to execute a window's exe file which I can't execute. What should I do instead? Unlock it using htcdev as if it was 2.02 s-on or will that mess my phone up?

sorry for that step you need windows there is no other way
you can only unlock but the best way is to use a windows PC/Laptop of a dude or use a VM with windows 7 or XP with usb pass
google windows 7 iso and look for one you can use in vm
I found this https://code.google.com/archive/p/htc-flasher/wikis/HTCFlasher.wiki
Do you know if it would help?
you can try (you need your rom as NBH and the desire s (saga) isn't supported its risky) it but save is a Virtual Machine with windows and usb passthrough
