I just made s-off my Vodafone Desire S European (Spanish). Works like a charm, indeed AlphaRev installed (with my consent) ClockWork recovery.
cool but my hboot is 98002
hi can you post a tutorial on how to s-off my device. I'm noob at this. I'm currently downloading ubuntu installer for windows. Thanks
1) have an ubuntu available (I use ubuntu 11.04)
2) install OpenJDK (java) on ubuntu (if you dont have Java yet)
3) download the Android SDK from developer android website
4) untar (tar xvf filename.tgz)
5) run tools/android
6) install 'Android SDK Platform-tools' and 'Android Compatibility package'
7) make sure your Desire is in USB Debug mode
8) run 'platform-tools/adb devices', and expect to see 1 device, I have one named '???????' but works for me
9) download and run alpharev (as root with sudo)
10) copy the serial from alpharev and get the key in alpharev website
11) introduce the key in command line
12) some reboots and get s-off!!!!
13) installs clockworkmod recovery if you want
xx) Profit!
no... wait we are not in slashdot
I wouldn't bother installing linux, just do it from a cd. No need to install sdk or adb or anything other than alpharevx.

My HBOOT is 0.98.0004, so I cannot use AlpharevX? Is there a way to err, downgrade it?

You don't need to adb.
Just open the terminal and cd to the downloaded alpharevx folder then type "sudo ./alpharevx"
You don't need adb, alphrevx works without it.
1. Exctract alpharevx to an easily reachable place (ex. Desktop)
2. Start terminal and get to that place (with cd command)
3. Run "sudo ./alpharevx"
I think you need to enable HTC Sync mode on your phone but not sure.
ok so i managed all that now it's stuck on alpharevx waiting for device...
I'm doing this on ubuntu through vmware. Could that be the problem?
USB debugging is on by the way!
oh it's also on HTC sync mode.
Virtual machine's hardware access may be limited, don't know. I've ran linux from USB flash.

Hi all,
Saw there were no guides for ClockworkMod install on Mac. And people cool enough to have the DHD must also surely have Macs Or like hacking about enough to have a hackintosh. So anyways, I made a guide.
Rooting and s-off
I rooted using this thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835746
You need to download visionary r12 and a terminal emulator, but its all explained there. Exact same process as for windows users.
Once you are rooted and have s-off, come back here.
ClockworkMod Recovery (Updated guide for [email protected] version)
1. Download the Android SDK for Mac from HERE
Extract it, then move the whole folder to the root of your main drive
e.g for me its full path is "/Snow/android-sdk-mac_x86"
2. Download the HTC fastboot binary from Here
Then extract it and move it to /xxxx/android-sdk-mac_x86/tools/
3. Download the clockwork.img from This thread
And copy it to the tools folder where you put fastboot
4. Connect your DHD to the computer in charge only mode.
5. Open Terminal.app
6. Type
Code:
cd /xxxx/android-sdk-mac_x86/tools/
Where xxxx is the name of your drive
And press enter.
If the drive where your sdk folder is located has a space in its name, you have to add a backslash before the second word.
e.g if your drive is called "Macintosh HD" the path will be:
/Macintosh \HD/android-sdk-mac_x86/tools
Alternatively, if you cant be asked typing into terminal, type cd, then a space, drag the tools folder to the terminal window, make sure it says the right path, then press enter.
7. Type
Code:
./adb devices
And press enter
Check your device is listed correctly y checking its serial number in settings on your phone with the serial number that comes up
8.Type
Code:
./adb reboot bootloader
And press enter
This should reboot your phone to bootloader, with green writing at the top, then fastboot USB in red.
9. Now type
Code:
./fastboot flash recovery clockwork.img
And press enter
If youve done it correctly, it will say
Code:
sending 'recovery' (4914 KB)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... OKAY
10. Now use the volume buttons to navigate, and power button to select, and navigate to bootloader, then once that loads, to recovery.
Let it load and ClockworkMod will load.
Then click down through the whole menu 3 times until it says 'back menu button enabled"
This means the power button now is the select button.
You now have CM successfully installed, and can reboot, install new roms etc as you please!
No guarantee provided for this guide, if it breaks your device, blows up the computer, gets you sued by google or whatever, I am not responsible and you do all this at your own risk.
Any improvements to the guide, please say in the thread.
I am also working on a script/app to do it all on OS X with one click. Will hopefully be done once this 10 days of coursework and tests is over!
Happy Flashing and thanks to all the devs that made this possible!
Rory
excellent looking forward to the app!
mac OS x needs love from android! devs
Yeah!!!
Useful Guide! Thanks!!
Thanks!
I'm running Ubuntu and the commands are basically the same for Linux systems.
But Linux users will need to add a small file to let the OS see the Device correctly.
Follow step 3 "Setup your system to detect your device." in the guide below:

Thank you so much for this tutorial is very useful! If Mac users who believe that this method is difficult, can install BootCamp and run Windows natively. I use Windows 7 Ultimate under BootCamp to use the tools for Root, Downgrade, etc... (remember: for use the tools under Windows, runing under "Administrator mode" click right on mouse over the EXE file
Someone with a Mac to use Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion for root, to Downgrade, etc with the DHD?
Regards,
This is a guide for all those who want to have S-off for their HTC Desire S !!!
I will try to elaborate as much possible so that you understand this easily !
Need :
1. HTC desire S with S-ON
2. Hboot : 0.98.0000 (this the only 1 supported for now. Please check the Hboot version before you proceed else it might brick your phone)
3. No need for any drivers or anything nor HTC sync
Linux system :
I used Ubuntu 11.04. But this manual would work for all Linux Systems.
1. Go to http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/
2. Click on Download for Linux
3. Now download the package
4. Now go to the location where this package you have downloaded and extract it to find Alpharevx file.
5. Next take your HTC Desire S. Goto Menu>Settings>Applications>development and turn USB debugging mode on.
6. Now connect your phone to the computer and select Charge only mode.
7. Now open terminal and go to location where you have Alpharevx and type sudo ./alpharevx in the terminal.
8. It would detect your phone, show you you serial number and ask for Beta key.
9. Now on the http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/ enter this serial along with selecting your model and Hboot version.
10. Press generate to get the beta key.
11. Now copy this key as it is and paste in the terminal and press enter.
12. Within 5 min your phone should be unlocked. You can see your phone restart couple of times during this period and then see that its S Off.
13. You will get a message Complete and option if you want to download Clockworkmod recovery. In case cell hangs or any issues. Start again from step 1.
14. I would suggest you say yes to it. It downloads and installs it.
15.Once you get the message that its complete. You can Unplug your phone and enjoy the Power of Android now.
Screenshot :

Windows : (credits : chockyT)
Note : You will need to install drivers for your phone but PC Sync should be not installed or uninstalled if installed already.
In case you have PC Sync installed...
Uninstall HTC Sync
Download the windows HTC drivers from Alpharevx's website and install
1. Go to http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/
2. Click on Download for Windows
3. Now download the exe
4. Now go to the location where this alpharevx.exe.
5. Next take your HTC Desire S. Goto Menu>Settings>Applications>development and turn USB debugging mode on.
6. Now connect your phone to the computer and select Charge only mode.
7. Now run this alpharevx.exe. (In case of Windows Vista and 7. Right click and run as administrator)
8. It would detect your phone, show you you serial number and ask for Beta key.
9. Now on the http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/ enter this serial along with selecting your model and Hboot version.
10. Press generate to get the beta key.
11. Now copy this key as it is and paste in the alpharevx.exe box and press enter.
12. Within 5 min your phone should be unlocked. You can see your phone restart couple of times during this period and then see that its S Off.
13. You will get a message Complete and option if you want to download Clockworkmod recovery. In case cell hangs or any issues. Start again from step 1.

Guys I have tried my best to keep this explanation as simple as possible. If you have still any problems or face issues feel free to ask.
Btw finally if any1 of you wants me to create another thread for steps for flashing custom roms after S-Offing your phone which I think we already have lots at XDA. But still if you want would post a simple 1 only if people want.
Hope this thread helped

Rooting with AlphaRevX using Ubuntu:
For those who want to use Ubuntu (it's not that difficult once you get used to it):
1. Download Ubuntu from the Ubuntu site.
2. Burn image onto CD/DVD (follow instructions provided at the site. If you have Windows 7, you can simply use the Windows Disk Image Burner program).
3. Reboot computer. Allow Bootup popup menu (usually F8?).
4. Select DVD/CD-drive.
5. Wait a bit for things to load. Choose "Try" aka Live CD Mode, no need to install, unless you want Ubuntu.
6. Connect phone, making sure that Debugging Mode is enabled. Download AlphaRevx for Linux (Firefox included with Ubuntu). Keep that browser window open.
7. Extract the downloaded file and make sure it's at the root directory (in Ubuntu, that's Ubuntu/Ubuntu, if I recall correctly).
8. Search for the Terminal (Windows key pops up the search, I think; otherwise, it's the icon on the top left corner of your screen), run Terminal.
9. Type in "sudo ./alpharevx".
10. It'll provide a key. Go back to the browser window where you downloaded Alpharevx - there's a form to fill out. Type in the key. It'll generate a second key. Type that key into the Terminal.
11. Make sure it says that everything is successful. It'll ask if you want to flash Clockwork. Type in "Y".
12. Once it shows success, reboot.
Never had any permissions problems, but sudo su between step 8 and 9 if you do.
- Hope you could make a guide on how to flash custom ROMS. Thanks.
guys, having problem, stuck at downloading recovery for your phone.... how long does it takes usually? how can I end it?
Thanks for the guides. Used Ubuntu's wubi installer to get Ubuntu onto my second hard drive then just deleted it from the hard drive after I was done.
Flashing a rom is very easy. You need to make sure you have Clockwork Recovery installed which the AlphaRev X tool actually does for you.
You'll need to install titanium backup from the market to backup any apps if you want to, as all your apps will be removed when you do this.
1) Download the rom you want to install; it should be a .zip file; and put it onto the root of your sd card (this means copy it straight over into the sd card and not into any folders within it)
2) Remove the battery from your Desire S and replace it, this makes sure your phone is not fast booting when you turn it off and on.
3) Turn your phone on while holding down both the Power button and the Volume down button. This will boot you into Clockwork Recovery.
4) Using volume up and volume down to move up and down the selections, and power button to select, go to wipe data/factory reset. THIS WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA BUT NOT ERASE YOUR SD CARD. Follow it through.
5) Now select 'install zip from sdcard'.
6) Locate the zip file and select it using the power button. Select the option to install it.
7) Wait until its finished, then reboot the phone, you can do this by removing the battery and putting it back or selecting the reboot option.
DONE!
Hope this helped!

Definitely shouldnt take more than a few minutes, the recovery file is quite small and with your internet speed it should download in a few seconds.
You can always install recovery manually by downloading ROM manager from the market.
I made a screenshot for those who are new to Ubuntu/Linux. Hope this helps.

Hi,
I used windows version on win7 pro x64,
it worked for my DS though after 3d try.
For windows version you will NEED install Drivers for your phone but PC Synch should be not installed or uninstalled if installed already.
In my case it went 2 times not good, but 3d time - ok, but after installing of CWM shell just disareared, however after reboot I could check that CWM was successfully installed.
PS you should run alpharevx.exe with admin privileges. (rigch click on alpharevx.exe -> run as Administrator)
PPS be patient!!! I aborted the 2d try because I thoght i'ts hanging, but next time it took about 20 min till shell disapeared...
S-off with Alpharev, Root with Gingerbreak and Clockworkmod Recovery with ROM Manager, thanks to everyone involved
In case anyone needs it for windows (although it is quite straight forward), sorry if im stepping on anyones toes,

1, I personally did a factory reset but apparently this is not necessarily needed
2, Uninstall HTC Sync if its installed on your PC/laptop
3, download the windows HTC drivers from Alpharevx's website and install
4, download the windows version of alpharevx from the same website ensuring you fill in the necessary details and take note of the serial
5, on your phone ensure you have USB debugging ticked (Menu>settings>applications>development)
6, connect phone to computer using USB cable and select 'charge only'
7, Extract the files from the downloaded alpharevx zip package and right click the exe file and 'run as administrator'
8, Give it a few minutes and it should be S-OFFed, your phone should restart a few times and youll eventually see the S-ON will have changed to S-OFF.
9, a message will come up in alpharevx saying something about downloading clockwork, say Yes (must be connected to the internet), it wont take long at all
10, As in vampires OP if the phone hangs for too long (alpharevx suggests 15+ minutes) then restart your phone and start again, also if it says waiting for device... for ages (like my noobie error did) then see step 5.
11, once its done it will stay on the bootloader screen, just unplug your phone, reboot and jobs a good un.
12, rejoice and thank any and every member of the alpharevx team until you vommit
On that note - Thank you alpharevx team, i absolutely love you!!

Is there a way to go back to S-on after having used alpharevx? I'd like to try some custom roms, but only if then I can restore the phone to factory conditions.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
First of all, please let me thank all the people involved into this process:
o unrevoked and AlphaRevX teams (for their great tools)
o davidreece (for reporting the temp root method) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190992
Since Revolutionary is not able (yet) to acquire root access on our ROM, I thought I'd get a temp root access BEFORE launching Revolutionary.
As a matter of facts I have successfully S-OFFed my device running the latest 1.47.401.4 ROM (HBOOT 0.98.0002).
I could not test this method on any other ROM version, but as long as you are able to get temp root using the commands below, you should be safe to go.
So let's get straight to the instructions:
PREREQUISITES:
o You know what you are doing. Messing up with your NAND implies a risk that you should be aware of.
o Android SDK installed. Download the "android-win-tools" from the following link otherwise (thanks .sh4d0w.) and extract the files to your \Windows directory: http://www.4shared.com/file/KK6KvF7Q/android-win-tools.html
HOW TO:
o Get your version of Revolutionary from their site: http://revolutionary.io/
o Ensure your device has "Debug USB" enabled and is connected to your PC in "Charge only" mode.
o Download fre3vo from the following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=661246&d=1311240968
o Open a command prompt and issue the following commands to get temp root access: (thanks again, davidreece!)
Code:
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
adb shell [i](you'll get a $ prompt)[/i]
/data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FAA90000 -end FFFFFFFF [i](you should be kicked off adb shell and get back to your command prompt)[/i]
adb shell [i](you should get a # prompt now)[/i]
exit
o DO NOT disconnect or switch your device off!!
o Now that your phone has temporary root access, launch Revolutionary and follow instructions on screen.
o In a matter of seconds you will see the new HBOOT in place
o You may want to answer Y when prompted whether to install CWM or not. It will install the new 4.0.1.4 version of the tool.
o Download the attachment below and flash it via CWM. It will install su and Superuser.apk. Restart your phone and you'll end up with a rooted stock rom.
You should be able to achieve the same results on Linux as well.
That's it, folks.
thank you
but got this problem :
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.

This is for:
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.
Because most of us don't have those files preinstalled in windows.
for HBOOT 0.98.0000, you don't need the temp root right?
Right, i can confirm it works without temp root
Only have Debuging on and phone in charge only, and run the program

I already have my phone Temp Rooted through VISIONary, my problem happens when I have to go to the CMB (Command Prompt)
8. Next, Open the command prompt (Start > Run > type "cmd") and paste the following...
Code:
cd C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools
Hit enter, and type the following...
Code:
adb
If adb runs you're golden. Type this...
Code:
adb shell
Hit enter, you will see this...
Code:
$
Now type...
Code:
su
I make it to where I need to type in adb shell and what it says is adb server is out of date. killing... *daemon started successfully*
Then it shows the $ sign.
What i'm supposed to do now is type su
Then when I do it says su: permission denied
This is where i'm lost at. I followed everybody's instructions perfectly but cant move on till I get pass this... Can anyone help me please?
Thank you
What Android version are you on?
2.2 ?
2.3.3 ?
2.3.4 ?
Check the permissions under properties of adb.exe (right-click adb.exe and select properties) in your sdk/platform-tools folder. Make sure it is allowed to run as a program.

Check the permissions under properties of adb.exe (right-click adb.exe and select properties) in your sdk/platform-tools folder. Make sure it is allowed to run as a program.

I have a Windows XP So when I go to properties the best I can do is Run it as an older version in compatibility mode? I'll still try it out to see if any older version works
*edit, tried and didnt work

NO DO NOT UPGRADE!!! If your on 2.2 it's very easy. Just download and use THIS TOOL. It will do it all for you. Just connect the device via USB Cable, and choose charge only. Extract the Zip file that you downloaded onto your desktop, and run the program. Then click the ROOT Button. Make sure your Anti-Virus and Firewall are disabled before you start. Then just follow the Prompts. When it's all done go to the Play Store ( Android Market ) download Rom Manager Free. Open up Rom Manager follow the prompts to Flash CWM Recovery. That's it your Rooted with a Custom Recovery.

I downloaded what you said, I run the program and disable the firewall, I clicked on Root and it says "Error running ADB try again"
I know that means I probably did something wrong in an earlier step but still unaware where I messed up at.

You need adb working... In order for adb to work you need to have android debugging checked under Settings > Applications > Development on your phone. It's not enabled by default on Sense roms so you'll need to make sure it's enabled and turned on.
Ok I made it past the part I was stuck at. Rooted my phone, downloaded ROM manager, clicked on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, and before it finishes it says " An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands! "
I'm sorry for asking for so much help but I'm not trying to mess anything up

All good about asking questions. When the message pops up asking for SuperUser Permission, you have to click yes. Otherwise it will not run.
I ended up factory restoring my phone and followed a youtube video for the same exact guide that you told me to use. I followed it step by step and now my phone works perfect. I appreciate all the help.
Instead of me creating a new post, can you recommend a good guide for me to flash my shift to boost mobile?

You should be able to find to find the info you need HERE.
Hi lovely people,
I'd like to install CM13 on my HTC Desire S S510e. I have found way too many different instructions on how to proceed and I was wondering if there's a simple, step-by-step (I really mean step-by-step) guide on how to do it. By now, as far as I understand I should:
1. S-OFF my phone (although I heard it's possible to install a custom rom even with S-ON?). I've read that you can do it using HTCDev or Alpharev. However the HTC Desire S doesn't appear on the list of supported devices in the first link. Which device should I select from the list? On the other hand, the Alpharev website says that Alpharev is deprecated and one should use Revolutionary but the Revolutionary website is empty. Finally a more general question: what's the benefit of using HTCDev or Alpharev?
2. Flash sagaopt TWRP 2.8.7.1. I use ArchLinux. In Linux I'd have to install android-tools to have adb and fastboot, then do "adb reboot bootloader" followed by "fastboot flash recovery TWRP-recovery-sagaopt-2.8.7.1.img"? Or do I have to first install an older version of TWRP to convert my sdcard to EXT4 to then install the sagaopt 2.8.7.1 version?
3. Use TWRP to convert my sdcard to EXT4.
4. Install cm-13.0-XXXXXXXX-UNOFFICIAL-sagaopt.zip and gapps by putting the files into the sdcard using adb (what's the command to do this?) and then flash the files using TWRP.
What steps am I missing? What are the perils? What should I be particularly careful with?
Please help me understand and condense the heaps of information found in this forum.
Thanks,
Ricardo

CM13 is to heavy for the phone CM12.1 is stable but slow (sometimes you miss a call because the mobile is too slow) CM11 is fast but old (i used CM12.1 now im using CM11 nightly but the gallery doesnt play videos i deleded it)
Thank you for reposting that guide and for suggesting CM11 instead of CM12.1 or CM13. In that guide it says that unlocking the 2.02 s-on using the htcdev tool doesn't work for him if I understand correctly. Also I went to the htcdev website and they say that the tool will remove all personal data including applications, text messages and personalized settings. However I wanted to install a recovery and make a backup of the phone as it is now and that wouldn't work if everything gets removed before installing the recovery. Is there a way to install a recovery without removing anything?

I think you can try titanium backup with an oneclickroot (kingroot or framaroot) or unlock it with the risk of loosing data first backup contacts/sms and callhistoy with apps of the playstore and your sdcard isnt affected
Oh i could be that you need the win8+ fastboot fix for htcdev http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-s/general/guide-fix-fastboot-windows-8-1-t2858337
and if it doesnt work use windows 7 (dont forget to install htc sync)
if its 2.00.0002/2.00.2000 you can s-off it if its 2.02.0002 its ****ty
I use linux. It's 2.00.0002 so I guess I should follow step 4, but step 4.4 asks me to execute a window's exe file which I can't execute. What should I do instead? Unlock it using htcdev as if it was 2.02 s-on or will that mess my phone up?

sorry for that step you need windows there is no other way
you can only unlock but the best way is to use a windows PC/Laptop of a dude or use a VM with windows 7 or XP with usb pass
google windows 7 iso and look for one you can use in vm
I found this https://code.google.com/archive/p/htc-flasher/wikis/HTCFlasher.wiki
Do you know if it would help?
you can try (you need your rom as NBH and the desire s (saga) isn't supported its risky) it but save is a Virtual Machine with windows and usb passthrough
