Recently my phone wont allow me to open either my camera or gallery and the message of 'Media scanner is running will appear'.
Does anybody know what I can do to stop this from happening? I've searched a bit and haven't found any definitive solutions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It has to complete before you can use files on external sd card. The bigger the card, and the more files on the card the longer it takes.

Its been like this for several days and it has never done this before. What exactly is it doing?

Also, I am unable to open the market. When I do a force close comes up for android.process.media. This is very annoying :/ I haven't downloaded anything new or change any system settings recently before this problem starting occurring

Trying scanning that sd card with a desktop. Under Windows7 after you insert the sd card, click on, Computer>(your sd card)>(right click)>properties>tools>error checking>Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors (option)>start. After it completes put it back into the phone and see if the scanning media message goes away.

Didn't work
There isn't actually any apparent message in my notification bar or anywhere else that says the media scanner is running. Unless I try opening my camera or gallery is when a small message appears that says "Media Scanner is running"
Even when I try to add a new alarm it says android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly and I have to force close. This is getting frustrating :\
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated
The media scanner is disabled - grab media scanner root from the market and re-enable then the process will complete. If you are not rooted, or upgraded and lost root (like me) then a factory restore will clear that setting.

Are there any other alternatives to doing a factory reset? I would but I'm unable to open mybackup pro due to the media scanner running as well and I have some apps that are not saved in my market apps and are no longer available on the market either. I would rather do a factory reset as a last resort in this case.
Any other suggestions? Thanks again for everyone who has provided feedback regarding my problem, I really appreciate it

I think that the factory reset is your only fix for this or like the dude said try to root and cant you go to your google account and go to the dashboard and make sure everything is synced? I noticed that when I did az factory reset alot of my apps are gone but if I look on my pc on chrome go to market and check my account it is all there everything I have ever purchased or downloaded.
Thanks for the advice.
I just logged in online like you suggested but I still don't see some of my apps that were previously available on the market and no longer are. Specifically some of my rom stuff for snes and what not.
How can I back these apps up before I so a factory reset? Is there a way I can save them via USB?
Thanks again

I want to share my list of startup items which I use to achieve nearly instant-on. The list is the bare essentials to boot the phone without the CPU hanging at 50%+ usage after boot for more than a minute.
Currently it is as follows:
Android System - Nothing will work without this
Calendar Storage - This is a personal choice because I use the calendar
Google Services Framework - This is a requirement for calendar storage above
Email client (K-9 Mail for me) - This is YOUR email client, not necessarily the Email app that is stock
Media Storage - This is to initialize the SD card
SNS - If you have anything setup apart from a google account, you should initialize this
Superuser - For all apps that require it at boot
That's it for mine, the bare essentials to get your phone booting plain is below now:
Android System - Nothing will work without this
Media Storage - This is to initialize the SD card
Keep in mind, the phone will boot fast with this but you may not have a launcher waiting for you. You probably wont have social networking things working off the bat without opening an app or two. The system will open a lot of other apps because of services installed regardless and since they haven't been initialized, you will have high CPU usage for a while which drains battery REALLY fast.
To give you an example, I disabled Google Framework Provider and when my widget went to grab the calendar list, the provider had to be re-initialized with all the dependencies, took about 5 minutes, ~70% CPU usage, 10% battery.
Try the list, play with the settings and let me know what happens below. Of course I take no responsibility if you rape your phone and it leaves you.
Sweet! thanks!

I know you can freeze sim tool kit, I believe you can even erase it if you don't switch sim cards regularly. Signal goes away for a second and comes right back, and sticks. Sim toolkit is for switching between different sim cards.

Okay, I stopped SIM toolkit, lost connection as expected. It came back as you described. BUT my data connection died a bit later and never came back, the best I see is edge.
I think we should explore this further.
EDIT: Left it off overnight and now everything is good. I'll update the OP as soon as I find a computer.

Hello,
I just installed ICS through Samsung Kies on my Skyrocket. Everytime I try to open the Gallery or Camera a message pops up saying that the Media Scanner is running, which is odd b/c the phone doesn't display it in the notifications. Furthermore I have restarted it several times and waited up to 30 mins at a time with the same results.
If I go to Settings --> Device --> Storage, I see some odd things.
Under Device Memory, Applications, Pictures, videos, Audio, Downloads, Misc Files ---- all say "Calculating..."
Under USB Storage, all of the above again say "Calculating"
Any ideas on what I can do?
Thanks

It just wont open it really wont do anything. Every time i try and open the text messages the phone lags and a black box pops up and then immediately closes it. It doesnt even stay open long enough for me to read it. So what I ended up doing was doing a complete data wipe and re-flashing and reinstalling everything. I havent had an issue since I have done that. The only bad part was I lost all of my txt messages.
Sounds like it could have been a couple of things. The message database could have been corrupted. Also, the stock messaging app really doesn't like large SMS databases.
Maybe a bad download of the ROM depending on whether you installed it in CWM... Can't have a bad download with the Odin (or the update in Tweaktools), as it checks the integrity of the file.

I actually just had this problem last week. I was using the stock msg app but it also affected my phone function and any app that needed to connect to a data connection. All apps force closed.
Another note is that this was immediately after an hour long session of using wifi tether over 4g. I rebooted and after boot almost no apps responded and my phone heated up (I assume applications were looping in the background after failing to open running the processor at 100%) so i turned off and went into recovery. Factory reset did nothing, clearing cache did nothing and i couldn't try any other apps due to the phone crashing. Only solution i found was a complete reflash of Tweaked.
I fear this happening again in the future so i figured i'd post my similar experience.
Battery life is good on my phone but I've noticed that something called "media server" app is eating much more battery than the screen.
Is this normal ?
I had the same problem. you can restart your phone to see if it stops the drain. also check for corrupted media files. for me it was snapchat that was causing the problem. every time would open it up. media server would start again. hopefully that was the only cause for me.

Snapchat MediaServer Issue
I am having the same problem, snapchat causes media server to consume battery, any fix available? (other than uninstallin
The problem in detail
Once a snapchat is received media server starts to "keep awake". This is stopped by deleting the snapchat cache and restarting the phone (until a new snap is recieved ). The snap chat cache folder is in the android directory and therefore subject to a .nomedia file, furthermore even adding a nomedia file to the cache folder does not correct the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I don't have snapchat installed but I've tried uninstalling viber and doggcatcher ,,, Will give the phone a few hours use to try and rule out these apps . Is it possible it could be Google search app?
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
I have the same problem..i didn't install any other new app on my moto g. No battery drain but i can't explain why is happening to consume more than the display does. It started from yesterday morning, i restart the phone but nothing changed. Sorry for my english

Can you try to uninstall the latest updates to "Google search" , there's a new function there that's constantly listening for speech command.
It's either that or viber in my case.

I just lost patience and did a reset on my Moto G. Now I will install the applications gradually and take care of the problem if the media server does not return.
I have the same problem. I have just cleaned the data of Media Storage app, hope it works.
I'll try next time. Thanks.

qcamera2factory might be the culprit
Hi guys,
as mentioned in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545970
a program called qcamera2factory might be causing this. It shows up as media server in the battery settings (maybe because it calls the media server all the time). This would also explain why snapchat is causing the battery drain, as it is a camera app.
Using Better Battery Stats, it shows that qcamera2factory is clearly keeping my phone from going to deep sleep.
Ideas, anyone?

This happened to me too at least two times.. in both cases I was using the camera before.
I just tried uninstalling different camera/video apps, and Skype was the one causing it. Fixed after a reboot, phone is going to deep sleep again!

Today the problem happened again and I had to just wipe the data from the Media Storage app. To find you need to go to settings, applications, and slide to the All tab.
I had the same problem from time to time. I freezed Moto Cam and Gallery, used Snap Camera instead, until now no more wakelocks. But I don't know if this is really the cause, will see.
Have this problem also. So annoying and frustrating. How are ordinary users supposed to deal with this is? Or even diagnosis it as it seems to be caused by any app vaguely related to the camera. Come on Motorola! How do we report this to them?
Inform Motorola
I have told motorola via their live chat about the problem and I was told the customer service representative will be informing the engineers. But to speed up the process it would help if more people reported the problem to Motorola.

Hi all,
Just got the nexus 5 and live everything about it except one thing, the email app. I can't tell if it's exchange services or the app itself, but "unfortunately email has stopped" keeps popping up randomly and will not stop. Another wrote thing is that the so manager will not let me wipe data (screenshot). Things I tried:
*rebooting
*deleting the apk through titanium, wiping data and reinstalling
Any ideas? I really need exchange email for work and it's driving me crazy.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Seems you screwed up something with titanium so do a factory reset and flash back to stock and test it out then and see if it all works fine. After that then do some changes slowly to see if it comes back again to narrow it down?
I have this problem with my Nexus 5 as well. It's been this way since I got it. Really, really annoying. This has been an ongoing problem for a while. I wish there was a fix....

I just wiped, flashed factory image and factory reset the phone and still getting these crashes and it is still not letting me wipe data from the app manager...
Any other suggestions? Right now, I'm going to try to delete the exchange accounts but it's not even letting me delete accounts!! I'm going to try to switch to ART to see if that helps at all, and will give an update.
Any other email clients for android that support exchange?? I'm lost at this point and I really tried everything I know before posting.

I don't think there's much you can do to fix the problem. There are a lot of people in the same boat. If you search Google, there are several posts about the same issue. Last time I checked, there's no fix.

Yeah, factory image and it still didn't work.
I just ended up flashing twrp and cataclysm ROM and that fixed it.

I'm using Touchdown (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nitrodesk.droid20.nitroid) from Nitrodesk.
Works perfect for my needs
Had battery drain issues with the stock exchange app, so I switched to Touchdown
Hope this helps for you as well

Just read your later post that you switched ROM

I m experiencing another issue..!!
I get couldnt sign-in error!!
Any solutions for this!!
Dont frget to press the THANK button!!!
Just an update, the new ROM solution was working for a few hours but starting to have issues again with "unfortunately email app has stopped working" errors.
I think it has to be how my exchage accounts are setup:
- One gmail account on IMAP
- 3 Exchange accounts on push notifications and sync all mails
Outside of that setup, nothing special. Anyone experiencing the same?

One last update (unless it creeps up again). I switched the syncing of emails to date back 30 days instead of "All" and that fixed the "unfortunately email has stopped" messages completely. The HTC One email client never had that issue so I assumed that wasn't the problem but I guess the email client on this phone is a bit more sensitive.
Ok, the problem crept back up again... the error message keeps coming back, and in the app manager, the "clear data" button is greyed out so you can't even start over unless you remove all the accounts.
I would like to ask anyone that has working exchange accounts (multiple) on the native email client share their setup and the app versions etc.
