[Q] NVFlash on UN-rooted 2.3.3? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hi all.
Recently used the LG software to update to the 2.3.3 GB release.
Like we all know, I lost my root.
I found a stock rooted 2.3.3 ROM that I want to use so that I can be rooted again.
Can I "Re-flash" the NVFlash on my non-rooted device?
Will it work to let me flash this new ROM? I've attempted to put NVFlash back onto my device, and it appears that it was successful. I'm nervous about trying to power-down and boot into CWM via NV. Can anyone confirm that this works?

That's how I rooted my G2x after ths update. Just make sure you can boot into recovery then backup, wipe data and install it normally. I was concerned about doing it too, but it worked perfectly normal. I used the 2.3.3 rooted rom. You can find it in the G2x development forum.
Let me know if you any questions.

Hey Donatello,
So, did you use the LG software first, and THEN NVFlash a new ROM?
Or did you just flash a 2.3.3 ROM in the first place?
I'm about to attempt the FIRST of those two. Am I understanding correct that is also what you did?

quick Q but nvflash now roots the device? but no SU is on it, i guess just download that from the market and we're done???
If this is the case I'm so happy cause superoneclick is very buggy to me!

You certainly can, in fact that's one of reccomended steps in getting root back is just reflashing cmw.

That's good, at this point you can safely put any pre-rooted rom you want including the pre-rooted GB 2.3.3 one from xboarders

Sorry to beat a dead horse, bout to go insane

Ok, so i have had a samsung captivate since last summer. I just did the official froyo update the other day and it was successful with kies mini. I then decided to root it using super1click which also worked successfully. I have superuser, titanium backup with busybox installed, and super manager and terminal emulator. I also successfully got clockworkmod flashed and working.
My problem is that ive got the new cognition rom on my internal sd card, but when i try to flash it with cwm, i get the 3e recovery failure message. Ive been reading various sites today on how to fix this problem, but every site seems to tell me something different. I ask this question here, because it seems to be the most knowledgeable site to go to.
How do i get my rooted captivate, with all the above installed and running, to allow me to flash a new rom and possible a new kernal down the road? Im about to go insane trying to decipher through all the info all the different sites have said. Sorry to write such a novel on a tired subject, but im going crazy. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

If you would have done a search here then you would have found that you need to do one of 2 things.
1. Flash back to 2.1
2. Replace the 3e recovery with one that doesnt check for the sig.
I dont know how to replace the 3e recovery. I think ill go with flashing back to 2.1. Once i dl Odin and flash back to 2.1, then i can flash a new rom or a new kernel? Will it undo everything i've done so far? Thanks for the help.

Here is a link to the replacement recovery.
Make sure you have the right odin and that your 3 button works right.
Yesh doing this will wipe out everything. Make sure to back up. Do not back up system data at all as when you restore it, it can lead to major issues. Once done with a custom rom it will be wiped clean. You will have to redo contacts, email, and all other settings
Thanks. Would it be okay to just flash a new kernel like speedmod kernal and just use the stock rom? Is that possible to do while im on rooted 2.2? I like the rom just fine, i just want it faster mainly. Thanks again.

To be honest I am not sure. I only had the stock on for a few hours as it was just not that great compared to the 2.2.1 rom that I have been used to running. I need BT voice dial and the added exchange options so 2.2 was not really for me. If you want a stock feel but faster then I would go with COG or one of the other roms based on the kb1 rom.
So I've come to the conclusion that I should just flash back to 2.1 and go from there. I have odin downloaded, but I'm not certain how to use it. Do you guys think I should flash a custom rom from stock, or just flash a kernel with lag fix and delete the bloatware? Thanks.
first flash 2.1 stock to get rid of the damn 3e. custom roms dont replace that always. also most custom roms dont flash with odin.
get a stock rom. read the instructions, flash

If you are getting .zip signature errors when trying to flash a rom (because you are using 3e recovery) you will not be able to flash a kernel.
Supercurio did make a KB1 kernel that is installable via Odin. If you install that, you will also get CWM recovery. Then you can flash anything you want.
Either way you will need an Odin program. Either Odin One Click to flash back to stock 2.1 or Odin v1.7 to flash the Supercurio KB1 Kernel .tar file.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the speedmod kernal is i9000 based which would cause a major headache/bootloop on the stock rom.

The problem is, the OP has no idea what he's doing. It sounds like he's wanting to flash to 2.1, then add a I9000 kernel. Since he's all over the place, it's hard to decipher what he's thinking.
To the OP. I'd HIGHLY suggest you look for the stickied "how to" video's by Connexxion. They will tell you what you need to do and show you EXACTLY how to do it. Invaluable info for the noobs.
Here is the link your looking for, download the installer zip file at the bottom of the first post. Extract to your fancy, use the install.bat file once extracted. Be sure to have the phone connect to the pc (DO NOT MOUNT) and have USB Debugging on.

ok no need to flash 2.1
get neldars kernel flashing app from the market
get a kernel for froyo without 3e recovery in the dev section. this one is great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=547852&d=1300708475
use neldars app (edit) "sgs kernel flasher" or something to that effect. to flash this kernel
then flash cognition
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and flash the same kernel placed in the pda slot.
when you installed keis mini, it installed new WRONG drivers (for odin)
reinstall the original other drivers.
BUT. in your OP all you wanted was to be able to flash COG or something.
ALL you have to do is fix your 3e recovery, SEVERAL people including myself have told you how to fix it. then CWM will work! you dont need a computer to fix 3e if you have root explorer (google it $) .
if you are going to flash a custom rom anyway dont bother going back to 2.1.
if you are going to stay stock, 2.2 is better anyway. (aside from 3e but staying stock dont matter)
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and the same kernel placed in the pda slot.

Ok, well i got the aio toolbox, and i flashed back to stock. Now im running 2.1-update1. How do i go about rooting now? I cant seem to find a root file. Thanks.

Need a little help

Ok so i really want the new baseband on my g2x, i was waiting to see if a flashable would come out but so far nothing
i would like to know if these are the steps to get the baseband and root
1.Go back to stock
2.Get stock recovery
3.Download LG update tool (which i think is found here , http://www.lg.com/uk/support/mc-support/mobile-phone-support.jsp)
4.Let it do its thing
5.When its done flash cwm
6.Flash a rom with root
And done? and i would like to know if that baseband can be used on 2.2.2
Watch and follow this video to get you back to stock.

Then run the update.
Then NVFlash
Then rooted rom by Xboarder.
Then do whatever you want.

I nandroided to stock, unrooted, flashed stock recovery, updated to 2.3.3, using the horrible lg update tool. Then nandroided back to my to cm7 w/ Jul 15th baseband. All is well. Gps is fast as hell, locked in 10 seconds indoors to 4 meters.
Side note: i f#@ing hate the lg updater tool;( 45min of upluging and repluging my phone to get it to take the update. Horrible, i rather use odin.

After returning to stock, you run the LG update then you will have the new baseband. Then NVFlash. Then load the rooted rom.
Then you have new baseband and a rooted rom.

[Q] Help with first attempt at root

Can someone please post a link on how one goes about rooting their phone now that superoneclick does not work after GB update? I didn't root before the update, and just tried to go through the process but to no avail. I really want to start flashing roms and unlock the power of the phone now that I have seen GB.
correct me if im wrong but i think you need to flash a rom that has root already.
as of right now you cannot root GB.
Run nvflash from the Dev section. Follow the instructions closely. There is a video available. Then flash xboarders rom. Then you will have a rooted updated rom.

First, download the rooted GB 2.3.3 ROM and copy it onto your SD card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
You won't be able to root with Superoneclick or any other rooting app. The easiest and fastest way to go about this is to flash CWM via NV flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
After flashing CWM reboot in recovery mode and flash the rooted ROM and voila!
You have the newest baseband and a rooted GB phone.
P.S. To be honest, I think the only reason that makes it worth going through all this trouble is being able to flash the new baseband on your phone.
Good Luck!

I keep seeing this same reply and wondering... Can't someone make the necessary root files a flashable zip and then we don't have to flash a whole ROM to attain root?
Actually, so far they can't. The way you get root on your phones is by finding a security exploit so you can write a few files, and busybox simlinks to the system. Then, it installs superuser. No roms are rooted on android by default (well, stock ones anyways.) Since all the current methods to root a gingerbread rom don't work on the new update, this is the only way to do it for now.

[Q] So is there no one?

Working on a root option for G2x gingerbread? It seems that there was a root before the phone was even released. But now that ginger is out its a no go? Is this phone not getting any love from any of the wonderful hardworking guys that do such great work? I know I should of just went with a custom Rom. But I hate this bloat which is killing my battery life. Telnav, Carhome, ect.... Thank you in advance.
Flash Xboarder's Stock OTA 2.3 Rom which is rooted. Boom you're rooted. You can then change to any ROM that you want and your phone will stay rooted.

That would be great if I could flash a new rom. I cannot get NvFlash to work. Nor can I get the phone to boot into recovery since the ginger update.
Then you did something wrong. I suggest rereading: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
and see where you went wrong. You should have no problems flashing cwm recovery whether you updated or not.

unroot confirmation

hey all, currently have a g2x rooted with cm7, and i've been looking to unroot;
just to make sure i dont do anything stupid, i wanna run this through with you guys:
first i would flash the stock 2.3.3 ota rom for g2x
then use the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 (one click nv flasher) to get back to lg stock recovery by clicking 'flash stock recovery' (do i need to dl anything extra for this?)
then im done, correct? if i boot up, ill get all the stock rom and apps and bloatware and etc back right?
thanks!
edit: how do i know which version of clockwork mod i have installed? im not sure if i did the external sd support or not...
You've gone back to a stock ROM, you've gone back to the stock recovery, but you haven't actually unrooted.
Whichever method you used to root, you should be able to use that same method to unroot.
UPDATE:
I was originally under the assumption that your 2.3.3. ROM was rooted. If it is stock you should be fine.
sorry for bump, but i read in tga_gunmans post that ppl should flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom and use superoneclick to unroot...would my method work too?
No your way would not work because the stock OTA by xboarder is rooted. Do what tga_gunman said. Flash the rom, use my unroot zip in CWM (deletes root files) and then flash the stock recovery. Busybox will still be on the phone but nobody should be looking for that.
Unroot zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?2vr7cmgg7qcdn14
Easiest way to confirm if your not rooted would be to install Superuser from the market. It'll tell you if the phone's not rooted.
There is an app on the market called Root Checker which is free. It will tell you if you are rooted or not.
A little extra help for me?

Thanks for your help jboxer. Forgive my noob-like understanding of rooting/unrooting terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to understand what I did.
Last night I went ahead with the unrooting process on my G2X which was running Gingerbread & CM7 following this youtube video (can't post link due to noobiness: watch?v=ryGIv8KQVIE), the order that this guy goes in is:
1. Wiping all cache/user data/formatting in CWM recovery
2. Restore to a barebones stock data in CWM recovery
3. Flash to go back to Stock using OneClickRecovery
4. SuperOneClick to unroot phone
What I ended up doing was restoring my phone to the backup that I created on my sd card when first rooting my phone rather than download that zip file in the video description which is a completely fresh start.
However, whenever I flashed to go back to stock using OneClickRecovery, it gave me that total barebones fresh start where I had to completely set up my Android from the first start screen and I lost my backup. Also, when I go to unroot the phone with that zip file, I don't know how to 'install from zip' after I've lost CWM Recovery menu. So, I flashed back to CWM so I could recover my backup from my SD Card again and install the 'unroot.zip' that you linked and it ran alright and I restarted, but I still had 'SuperUser' in my App drawer telling me that I was still rooted.
I ended up calling it good last night after spending two hours on it. I left my phone rooted, with CWM recovery still on my phone, but I at least I had my backup Gingerbread image with no CM7 mod. So, my phone is functional, but I would like to complete this process of unrooting completely.
Could you perhaps give a little guidance and clarity to what I'm missing or not understanding? I'd love to unroot/flash back to stock recovery/remove all evidence of rooting AND keep my recovered backup that I have before I even started rooting my phone.
Thank you so much for all your help, everybody.
