I don't believe you can root it directly. You need to flash over a custom ROM which has already been rooted. You can still keep stock, but you have to find rooted stock in the "Android Development" Section.
Its good that you got that update though, this ensures you get the updated baseband, which a ROM usually will not flash over.

Stock rom

Looking for a complete stock rom without root. Something someone could flash and go back to factory and with all the gaps all ready loaded. I looked all over but could only find stock with root.
Thanks
so you want a stock rom without root.... and all that is available is the stock rom with root...
to avoid being an ass and stating the obvious
have you tried un-rooting the stock rom with root?
Not trying to be mean but this is a development forum, and its here.. says [get] T-Mobile g2x p999 factory firmware in title..

Not trying to be mean too. But have you downloaded the file? If you did downloaded it, have you extracted the contents? If you did extracted the contents, can you let us know how to flash those BIN files?
That is the stock unrooted firmware. Just reading the last few posts on the thread looks like how to reflash stock hasn't been discovered yet.. at the same time you can unroot with superoneclick the do a factory reset with volume down and power button.. that should be "stock".. stock froyo should be 60-75mb as far as any mods by LG.. idk.. wouldn't think it would make it 500mb (lil over actually I downloaded it a couple days ago just to have it around). But this really should be in general.. if your having a problem ask.. there is a lot of great minds willing to help..

Yes that is the stock unrooted firmware. But it contains BIN files. One is the baseband which is flashable via Smartflash. I tried extracting files out of the bigger BIN file via ExtractNow and also mounting it via Virtual Clone Drive but it didn't work.
I've already asked paulobrien to make an NVFlash stock rom release for the G2X much like the one he did for the O2X (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007825). But he hasn't replied yet.
If I know the odmdata value and the android_fastboot_emmc_full.cfg, I would have done it myself.

Yea same thing here with me I've asked Paul to help with nvflash commands but no answer back yet. Im one of those that can benefit from this right now as my phone in a boot loop, But all of us will benefit from this sonner or later. After flashing ex amount of roms and themes its always good to go back to stock and start flashing from a stock build.

Well, if you Dont see them there, it would be helpful to know which apps she deleted.
QQ, if she needs the apps to take the OTA, she must not have root. If she doesnt have root, how did she delete system apps?
(Or did she unroot to take OTA? And if so, is she aware there is no root available yet for the GB ota?)
MAJOR MAJOR EDIT!!!!! I stand corrected! Holy crap! Root for OTA GB announced today woo!!!hoo!!!!!!!!!!

She rooted and backed up. And deleted some stock apps. Then her sd card took a crap, and she got some back but not all. She does have the htc stocks apk but it wont install i think thats the only one she needs so she can update. She is not rooted anymore she didn't know she needed all the apps to update. Im just not familiar w the Evo enough yet. Thanks

Just have her run a ruu. Newest ota can now get root. Why the hell does someone need all the stock apps? Sorry, i Dont get it. If she has root, flash a GB rom, if she doesnt, than root her practice phone.
Sorry, maybe im not understanding the problem.

[Q] Root NS4G 2.3.7 without clockworkmod?

is there any way to just obtain root access without having to install a custom recovery? I would like to just have root on stock
I think every time you reboot the phone your recovery will be set back to stock. You have to flash CWM every time you need to use it.

This is incorrect. Once you flash a custom recovery it is there to stay unless you remove it. Now on too the real point. Why would you want to root and not have a custom recovery? The point of having root access is to be able to gain access to things you can't unrooted and top flash custom firmware, hacks, mods, etc. which you cannot do with stock recovery. Secondly why would you want to stay on stock gingerbread when there are TONS of beautiful ICS roms to run. If you really want to be stock then root and flash a deodexed stock ROM. If not try MIUI or a tweaked out ICS ROM.

This is MIUI and it's beautiful.
Anyways...If your problem is with CWM in general then flash TWRP (great UI and all touch input) as far as rooting check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17300587 there are how to videos and what not. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9919944 for everything you need to get your phone connected to your computer (drivers, etc.) And here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21968928 for different recoveries.
Trust me, rooting and flashing custom firmware is the best thing you can do for your NS4G and is safe as long as you always follow instructions and keep a good stable nandroid backup just in case.

Its not that I am afraid to flash, I constantly flash roms but i am most comfortable with gingerbread and was wondering if i can just have it rooted without a custom recovery because I dont want to flash any other roms for the time being.

Only if you install a custom ROM. The stock ROM reflashes the stock recovery on every boot.
It can be disabled by removing or renaming /system/etc/install-recovery.sh though.

Noob Verizon GS3 question

In the past i have rooted other phones without wiping the phone, however, from looking at the root methods for the Verizon GS3 It looks as though you have to flash a rom in the process of rooting it. Is it possible to root the Verizon GS3 without wiping data?

So If i flash the stock rooted rom using this method once the phone turns back on i will not notice anything has changed other than it now having root?

Yep, that's how it was for me. I was worried I would lose my data too, but I was pleasently surprised.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Since your not changing roms to a custom one but instead going stock to stock modded, you can dirty flash and you will be fine.
A dirty flash you don't loose your data.
Using the "Root66" method in the Verizon Development forum does not require a wiping of user/application data.
Not the first screen shot of Verizon saying they will unlock the bootloader, and this is one of a few places I can post.

same here, i'm on sprint. is it ok to flash being deodex?
Not sure. I haven't got too deep into flashing on this phone, as there's not a heck of a lot to flash. Typically no, you would need to be stock odex and stock recovery to take an ota
Sent from my 2PQ93 using Tapatalk
me too , i have this update 2 days ago , only changes i noticed :
* my hand free stopped working with my htc a9 and now its back again
*have new app called ""HTC VIP" , but its not working in my country
@k2buckley yeah, what a shame :/ i guess i'll have to wait and see what's new with this ota. it was a pain in the arse to get all things done yet i have some issues.
I'm getting that annoying notification about the system update. I'm just rooted with twrp. What would be the best way to update?

Have a look in Post TWRP Recovery #2
chapter 8,9 and 10.
NB: Download and save the ota in your sd card (you'll find it in /data/data/com.htc.updater). You could share it for XDA members...
Cheers
was about to ask the question where i could find it, thanks kho
any feedback abt this ota?
Only thing I've noticed is we have an option for the fingerprint scanner to wake the screen and use it as a home button.
it was already there. i think it's just some improvements and bug fixes.
