I have a US Cellular Mesmerize and I recently installed CyanogenMod 7 (mesmerizemtd).
I am having the following problems and was wondering if it is just me:
1) USB mass storage doesn't work most of the time. If I connect my Mesmerize to my computer using the USB cable it will charge but it won't connect to the SD card and USB debugging doesn't appear.
2) LED flashlight apps don't work
3) Wi-fi hotspot doesn't work. I can get ad-hoc apps working but not the included hotspot.
I did a backup in cwm recovery before installing, can I restore this to go back to Froyo? And then can I go back to CyanogenMod by restoring another backup?
The flashligh apps won't work right now. They are still working on that.
The usb issue. Try installing the nexus drivers. If that doesn't fix it try a different usb cable
The wifi hotspot I have no idea as I personally never use it. I'm sure someone else will chime in with ideas for it though.

+1 to scarmon... cm7 uses nexus s USB drivers so install those. torch is not working yet but will come in a nightly eventually.
As for wifi hotspot, it doesn't work with the built in one. I've had no problems running as ad-hoc with wireless tether and with barnacle tether.

I'm having quirky issues as well:
Can't stream for very long, not related to the screen timeout. It tends to be more aligned with a weak signal. I didn't have this problem with PnP or Heinz so I know it's not the location since I've always had a decent signal. I've tried *228 and reflashed multiple times and tried the 3 different governor settings with no difference.
Also related to this (I assume): my screen jumps back and forth and the keyboard posp up/disappears regularly with a low signal.
I like the ROM, speed, and options CM7 has provided but I need to stream since I commute 1 1/2 hrs to work!
Not complaining but I just wanted to discuss with others some issues and hopefully help each other out.
Thanks for the effort everyone puts into the community!
Are you us cellular or cell south. If uscc. See if its set to automatic under mobile networks. If cell south. Leave it on home only

As far as I know the Rom shouldn't impact your signal but I could be wrong. Your using the same radio as you did before. Try pulling the battery for 30 seconds or so and give it another try. Supposedly this reconnects your phone to the network with a fresh connection. Don't know if it's just tech BS or not but it seems to help me.

From the reading I've done its not BS. It resets some of the small componets that get trapped or gated or something. Apparently only removing all power for an extended period of time can fix this. Since finding this out I do it about once or twice a week. May be why I very rarely have issues. I don't know. Could just be luck

I tried the battery pull but didn't know it needed to be an extended period of time. Works like a charm for streaming now. I do still get the keyboard pop up when I'm at work because of the weak signal but no biggie. No other issues that no one else hasn't mentioned, but well worth the risk for the battery life and speed. As always, you guys kick a$$!

I cannot pair my vehicle's headunit to a CM-powered device, starting with CM6 RC2. (RC1 worked as expected).
I would like to build the stock Android Bluetooth stack and replace that portion of CM with it, in an effort to see if it resolves this problem for me. I'm also curious how the new Bluetooth stack in Gingerbread will behave, as it's apparently received an overhaul.
Ultimately, I'd like provide a package so that CM users could easily "flash" a new BT stack if they're having problems with CM's modified version.
I'm a junior developer, and I have Ubuntu on my machine, as well as AOSP Gingerbread and CM6/7, all building correctly. However, I lack the knowledge (or even a starting point) on what I need to do to accomplish this.
Anyone willing to offer some advice?
Additionally, if anyone else out there is having problems, please post here--once I get this working, I'll need test candidates to see if it helps resolve their issues as well.
EDIT: Starting here. http://source.android.com/porting/bluetooth.html
Never had an issue with bluetooth and my vehicle or a couple of others while running CM 6.x or any of the nightly builds of cm6. Sometimes a kernal I flashed would break it, but otherwise it worked fine. I done this one both a alpine blue tooth module and factory ones.
What are you syncing to?
aduljr, the type of headunit I have is called "BlueConnect", and is built-in to my 2009 model year Hyundai Elantra. This is the manufacturer's website: http://www.autointelligence.com/
Like I said, it worked with CM6.0.0 RC1, but stopped working starting with RC2 and hasn't worked since.
So far I've started reading about the BlueZ stack, but haven't made more progress than simply reviewing some make files.
As always, if anyone has any pointers (or if anyone is also having BT-related problems), please post.
Thanks.
While you're working on the bluetooth stack, can you look into the lack of DUN/PAN support on the the Evo?

I suppose I might as well--I'll have to delve into Bluetooth pretty deep I suppose, so I'll see what I can do.
What are you hoping to do with DUN/PAN support? Mobile networking/Ad-Hoc of some sort?

Basically, I'd like to be able to tether my phone over BT. The Evo doesn't provide a DUN or PAN service that OS X can see (never tried windows), so things like Android-Wifi-Tether don't work in bluetooth mode.

It works fine for other Bluetooth profiles (phonebook, etc) but it doesn't provide a PAN service at all. I haven't tried with the new AWT, but I don't hold much hope.
I've created an update package from CM6.0.0 RC1 with (what I believe to be) all the pertinent Bluetooth files. This will replace your current files when you run this update script.
I'm going to test this using a CM7 nightly, and wholly expect this to fail. This may actually work with CM6, however, but I'm testing CM7 first.
If anyone else tests this, please let me know your results.
Also, if anyone is more tuned in as to what needs to be done/fixed, please let me know that as well. I'm basically treading water in the middle of the pacific, hoping I find an island.
This is appreciated. I stopped using CM because they changed something with bluetooth that would cause my Motorola Rokr headphones to constantly cut in and out. I asked the question over at CM's forums but never received any help there. Before with RC6 the headphones worked flawlessly and I could actually ride my mountain bike on the trails and never have it cut out. Seems they have cut some power out to save battery or something but hey I'm no dev so who knows. Maybe in your quest to get better bluetooth you could figure out if the power can be turned up for those of us that just want a stronger connection.

+1 I have this same problem. CM has a much weaker bluetooth connection than Sense ROMs. I would love to be able to flash something over CM7 to increase bluetooth reliability, even if it hurts battery life (you could always turn bluetooth off when you need to save battery).

When I've had problems with audio dropping in and out,it's because my wifi is on at the same time.
You can't have wifi and do a2dp at the same time. I've seen that around,so I think it's a known bug.
The whole reason I switched to cm was because the bitpool is set too low in all the sense roms. From my understanding, it should be set to something in the 50s or 60s (sorry, I haven't looked @ it in a few weeks) and sense roms have it set in the 30s resulting in a lot of high frequency distortion or clipping.
I'm not sure if that's helpful. ..but I wrote some stuff.

Yeah my wifi is not on when Im riding my bike. I do agree sence has a pretty crappy bluetooth stack but the early CM releases were amazing. I could ride even on a open road with no trees to bounce signals of off and never get a signal drop.

Well, wouldn't it be easier to look back into the git commits for the CM repository. And see what changed in the bluetooth files after 6.0.0? That way you should be able to drop in the older bluetooth stuff, and have it work. Then you can try to convert that stuff to work in CM7?

If you use AWT and set it to Bluetooth mode and then turn it on, the PAN service will magically be created, but only while tethering is turned on. However, I still wasn't able to get Bluetooth tether to work because of some kind of IP address error in AWT. I think AWT wasn't able to set an IP address for the Bluetooth PAN adapter. My computer was able to see the Bluetooth PAN but wasn't able to pull an IP address to fully complete the connection.
Hi, I've been lurking for answers regarding a Wi-Fi problem that I have on ANY gingerbread ROMs that I tried and I found no solution. Hence this new thread.
My Wi-Fi will not stay awake and will turn itself off (EVEN when it's set to NEVER sleep) a couple of minutes after the screen goes off. I tried many, if not all Wi-Fi lockers and none worked. The problem is that when I'm listening to streaming radio, for example, the data will switch from Wi-Fi to 4G without any warning. Asking Tasker to let the screen on work but gee, it's a workaround that uses a lot of battery. (Oh also, I asked Tasker to let my WiFi on and it didn't work neither.
The funny thing is: I have not this problem with Froyo. Only with Gingerbread. I tried the OTA 2.3.3, the Trigger ROM (from CM7), the Cyanogen RC1, nightly 97,98,99,100,101,102 and 103 ROMs, the KANG rom... NO one worked...
HELP!!

I was wondering if it would be possible to use tasker to flick wifi off and on when wifi drops and/or 3g activates. Lately it seems on my phone that when I go out of wifi range and the 3g/4g connects the last wifi spot is remembered and almost acts like it is still in range causing issues when trying to connect to the next spot. I already installed the 7 day trial but haven't had as much time to research as I thought. Sound possible? Wasting my time?

What ROM are you on? I haven't had any of the problems like you describe since moving to Gingerbread.
Sorry, still stock. I keep thinking about flashing a rom but like others I am hoping for an official release soon with all the updates/leaks. Also this is my first android phone and I don't have total confidence in flashing it. For instance for whatever reason rooting using the "regular" method didn't work and had to use superoneclick. The latest rom thread also seems like a bit of a hodge-podge of things needed to get everything working....no disrespect intended to the individuals working on it.

Superoneclick is the "Regular" method for most people...
Infused 2.x had a few rough patches as he tried to integrate UCKI3/I4 stuff to fix the known issues with the Rogers release, but that has settled down as people have figured out what's broken in I3/I4 and what's not.
Serendipity VII is still stable, Mikey didn't rush to bring in the I3/I4 stuff. If you flash it, you'll have the following issues:
No audio on first call after boot - toggling speaker on/off will fix it (Hellraiser known issue)
No HDMI (won't see this until AT&T releases Gingerbread)
Data speed issues (However the Hellraiser beta9 kernel or my DD kernel may improve this - I am STILL waiting for someone in an area with good speeds to do an A/B comparison between old/new kernels.)
Camera limited to 15 FPS video - but you can flash the UCKI3 camera libs to fix this, there's a separate flashable package with its own thread in the dev section
None of the above bother me significantly (In fact as I live in the boonies and shoot with an SLR, the data speed and camera issues don't bother me at all), so I have been on S7 for a while.
In general you will find that there are VERY few people here running stock Froyo any more.
Good news is that if you screw up, Samsungs are VERY easy to restore to stock. Download mode (aka Odin/Heimdall mode) is awesome.

I guess that is where doubt started setting in about whether I should start flashing the phone or not. Both stickied root threads point to the rage against the cage method and one points to superoneclick being the old method. Thanks for all the info. I wasn't aware off the 30fps fix since I don't frequent the development threads. I honestly haven't had the time to do the necessary research if I get stuck so I have stayed stock.
Back on topic, I did get a chance to look up the some things in tasker and will try it out at work tomorrow since this is where it seems I have the most trouble. I'll post back if it works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318704
hi-
I just installed Octane to my galaxy s 4g after much work, research and reading through these forums. Everything is working phenomenally, I'm running gingerbread, have screaming speeds, and fairly decent 4g data connection (confirmed) and my phone boots faster than I've ever seen it, awesome work.
The problem is that wifi is not working that well. The range is horrible and it will only connect to wireless G routers, and absolutely will not even connect to any N routers, it just simply scans, connects, scans, connects, etc....
I have tried multiple modem files, the default that comes with Octane (which I believe is KI3, I tried KF2, as well as KJ3, all with same results, and will be attempting KD2 next (the one that came stock on the phone, I believe), which I expect the same results as I was running the KJ3 modem prior to moving from stock rom to Octane, with no issues which tells me it's likely a problem with how the new rom handles N networks, but if anybody else here has an idea on how to fix this, I'm all ears.
Like I said, everything else is working just great, so I know the rom installed properly and even got gingerbread working, however is someone doesn't believe me that I actually can follow instructions, the links for the guides I followed are below.
Rooted, installed cwm
backed up my stock rom, settings, etc, twice using cwm (just to make sure) and backed all sd card contents up to computer
attempted install of octane per the forum, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
failed due to gingerbread migration issue, fixed per the gingerbread start up guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
and of course for completeness, I did read over/follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122508 where applicable and had a nice look over the bible at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554 and a look over http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979109
and that, I believe encompasses about every useful and up-to-date bit of pertinent information that I could find, and remember using since this adventure has taken quite a bit of time over the last few days.
So, please don't ask any dumb obvious questions like "did you set the mounts properly" or "did you wipe the cache first", because I did, if I didn't the rom wouldn't even be working and I would have a different issue, and please don't flame me if this happened to have been answered 6 months ago on this forum, google and even this forum search can only do so much and I did make every reasonable effort to find an answer first. I may be new to these forums but not to technology...so thanks to all who are able and willing to offer any useful suggestions/advice.
Sorry, but that last part of your post was arrogant as hell. You should consider not putting that there if you want help next time. Most people that could help might just be put off by that.
On topic, wifi is a known issue on ask of the GB ROMs, which is why every leak practically has the question "how's wifi". We're still waiting for a leak with all problems solved.
thank you very much for your reply, that was exactly the type of information I was looking for.
As for sounding arrogant, I apologize and did consider that when writing and tried to make it sound less arrogant, problem is I have had more than my fair share of experience on these forums and I find it tends to waste a ton of time when people don't bother to read my post and ask me obvious questions, or just simply insult me by talking down to me like a kindergartener. Now I understand there's a lot of noobs on here and such, and I apologize for my frustrations in getting responses and any hurt feelings. Unfortunately I don't know any better way of getting across that I'm not an idiot, can use search and google, and can follow directions....
Glad I could help.
However, if you're super dependent on wifi, you should probably go back to Froyo instead. IMO, the speed difference in GB is worth the poor wifi signal (although my wifi doesn't seem to have problems).
That wasn't meant to be anything offensive to you, btw. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Unfortunately, some people here jump at the chance to flame.
yeah, I'll take the speed anyday, having my phone up and ready to go in 2-4 minutes versus the 15-20 it used to take is definitely worth it, and 4g is working well enough I can live with being stuck on 4g at one end of my house...
and yes, people love to flame, on xbox we call them telephone tough guys, all the same though, a hallmark of the internet since the early 90's, man that makes me feel old....
You could also try switching out modems to see which one would give you the best service too.
Pardon my lack of proficiency on the subject but what tools and or apps do you use to test the wifi on our phones? I hardly use it so I really haven't noticed any difference since flashing custom ROMs. I think the only time I connect is to use the Google TV remote app to interact with the TV. I understand testing with different routers for the B/G/N connections I was just curious what tools you use to measure signal strength and throughput?

Probably won't be any difference between modded and stock. Since the rom modders aren't modifying the modem.bin.
But going back to Froyo, you will notice a difference. It is much better there.
Wifi is probably the reason they haven't dropped GB source yet (amongst other stability issues).
[FIXED] wifi on galaxy s 4g fully working WITH gingerbread
IT WORKS, IT'S FIXED!!! WOOT!!!
yes, running gingerbread/octane on galaxy s 4g, have wifi on both N and G networks, secured with wpa/wpa2 psk. Typical setup in any home and it works!! not the strongest signal on the planet but I have access and screaming speeds (4g speeds are off the chain with this new rom compared to stock, better performance probably has everything to do with it)
so, yes, a router reboot and a couple modem file flashes later and viola, everything works.....using gingerbread. Would add a signature to show what I"m using if this site would let me, but for now I'll post it here:
Phone: samsung galaxy s 4g (SGH-T959V)
firmware version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T959VUVKJ3
modem: KJ3
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Build: Gingerbread.VUVKI3
Rom: octane v2.0 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
hint: if you choose to install the rom, be sure to install the gingerbread startup pack first!
from the above responses having wifi, 4g, and everything else working WITH a new rom and great performance has had an issue, I would like to say at this point everything is working great all around, no issues whatsoever. Total awesomsauce!
First off, I am new to Android devices.
I got a Nexus S 4g, and I really only wan to play games on it. I have AT&T, and got this used phone for free. So, instead of getting an Android tablet, I have a phone I can play with.
This includes flashing things as it's already unlocked!
So, I really only want three things (other the stability) if possible, the ability to turn off cellular usage and keep WIFI on, good performance for apps, and battery life.
Any suggestions on what Android OS to be running (ICS or JB) and a ROM & Kernel combination that would work? I have played around with a number of them, but I can't seem to notice any real difference.
I can and already have flashed a number of things, including having to flash the Android open source JB because of being stuck with Clockwork recovery not allowing a USB mount and the phone not booting from trying JellyBam.
Got TWRP on, and I'm happy with it. I also got an extended battery at 1850mAh.

I suppose I should have been more clear, I plan on using it like a mini tablet. As such, I don't need the cellular option, and that's why I would like to if possible disable it so it won't try to connect with the Sprint network.

You should still be able to use WiFi without activating it on Sprint.

SlimBean RC2 has been working well for me. No issues. WiFi always on. Battery life has been good as well with standard battery.
And this should have been posted in the Q&A section. Just sayin...

Yup...I noticed they mentioned in the OP they wanted to use att service, so in that circumstance this wouldn't work. But as you said, it will work with WiFi. That's what I'm doing with mine. I ordered my N4 this morning and I'll keep the ns4g as a dev device.

You should have done your homework. Ns4g is a CDMA phone. At&t is a gsm carrier. You can't activate it on any carrier but sprint.

Well you can use it on cricket or other providers like cricket.

CyanogenMod 10. It is fast and stable on the Nexus S4g.
Use without cellular and get speed eith life?
Type *#*#4636#*#* into your dialer and it will open a testing menu. Open phone info and scroll down and turn off radio. Now the cellular radio will not operate at all or use any battery, so your battery life will jump quite a bit. Also some roms have a function to hide the radio signal indicator. As an added bonus, you can use google voice and grooveIP to make and recieve phone calls and texts over a wifi connection for free!
Edit: this works on every rom I have tried.

True, but the battery died in about 2 hours of WiFi usage. When I got the phone, it had CM9 RC2 on it already. That's with trying a couple different kernels and setting the CPU to "On Demand". It wasn't worth it.

I went into there, and it already said it was off. I guess turning off cellular data kills the radio as well.

I was simply saying that I don't want the radio on because I am on AT&T. I should have explained that because I can't use it, I would rather disable it so it's not using any of the battery.
OP first you need to familiarize yourself with the Forum Rules on posting in the correct section, Moved to here. Thank You.

Oddly enough, I have had SlimBean RC2 preform random reboots. It's a shame as it seemed to go so well and I really liked the custom DPI settings.
Update : Seems that I had something of an improper flash. I used TWRP and ran multiple flashes in a row.
I ran it again, and flashed the ROM, restarted into recovery, flashed GApps inverted, repeated, and flashed the Matr1x CFS kernel.
Is there a way to replace the per-installed Holo launcher? I like the Nova Launcher as it seems to use less RAM and I can have everything with a cube animation. If possible, I would like to remove the Holo HD Launcher as I have no need for it.

You can use titanium backup to push nova to system and then freeze holo if you like or ever remove it.
I have found after replacing the launcher, SlimBean has become unstable. Every so often, it crashes and reboots. Aside from re-flashing, any other advise?
Also, the battery life seems to be just so so. I tried the kernel included and Matr1x 25.
AOKP with Matr1x seems to be rather stable and ok with the battery.

Just thought I would post a screenshot of the battery meeter so you all know what I can get.
