Use without cellular and get speed with life? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, I am new to Android devices.
I got a Nexus S 4g, and I really only wan to play games on it. I have AT&T, and got this used phone for free. So, instead of getting an Android tablet, I have a phone I can play with.
This includes flashing things as it's already unlocked!
So, I really only want three things (other the stability) if possible, the ability to turn off cellular usage and keep WIFI on, good performance for apps, and battery life.
Any suggestions on what Android OS to be running (ICS or JB) and a ROM & Kernel combination that would work? I have played around with a number of them, but I can't seem to notice any real difference.
I can and already have flashed a number of things, including having to flash the Android open source JB because of being stuck with Clockwork recovery not allowing a USB mount and the phone not booting from trying JellyBam.
Got TWRP on, and I'm happy with it. I also got an extended battery at 1850mAh.

I suppose I should have been more clear, I plan on using it like a mini tablet. As such, I don't need the cellular option, and that's why I would like to if possible disable it so it won't try to connect with the Sprint network.

You should have done your homework. Ns4g is a CDMA phone. At&t is a gsm carrier. You can't activate it on any carrier but sprint.

You should still be able to use WiFi without activating it on Sprint.
SlimBean RC2 has been working well for me. No issues. WiFi always on. Battery life has been good as well with standard battery.
And this should have been posted in the Q&A section. Just sayin...

Yup...I noticed they mentioned in the OP they wanted to use att service, so in that circumstance this wouldn't work. But as you said, it will work with WiFi. That's what I'm doing with mine. I ordered my N4 this morning and I'll keep the ns4g as a dev device.

Well you can use it on cricket or other providers like cricket.

CyanogenMod 10. It is fast and stable on the Nexus S4g.

Use without cellular and get speed eith life?
Type *#*#4636#*#* into your dialer and it will open a testing menu. Open phone info and scroll down and turn off radio. Now the cellular radio will not operate at all or use any battery, so your battery life will jump quite a bit. Also some roms have a function to hide the radio signal indicator. As an added bonus, you can use google voice and grooveIP to make and recieve phone calls and texts over a wifi connection for free!
Edit: this works on every rom I have tried.

True, but the battery died in about 2 hours of WiFi usage. When I got the phone, it had CM9 RC2 on it already. That's with trying a couple different kernels and setting the CPU to "On Demand". It wasn't worth it.

I went into there, and it already said it was off. I guess turning off cellular data kills the radio as well.

I was simply saying that I don't want the radio on because I am on AT&T. I should have explained that because I can't use it, I would rather disable it so it's not using any of the battery.

OP first you need to familiarize yourself with the Forum Rules on posting in the correct section, Moved to here. Thank You.

Oddly enough, I have had SlimBean RC2 preform random reboots. It's a shame as it seemed to go so well and I really liked the custom DPI settings.
Update : Seems that I had something of an improper flash. I used TWRP and ran multiple flashes in a row.
I ran it again, and flashed the ROM, restarted into recovery, flashed GApps inverted, repeated, and flashed the Matr1x CFS kernel.

Is there a way to replace the per-installed Holo launcher? I like the Nova Launcher as it seems to use less RAM and I can have everything with a cube animation. If possible, I would like to remove the Holo HD Launcher as I have no need for it.

You can use titanium backup to push nova to system and then freeze holo if you like or ever remove it.

I have found after replacing the launcher, SlimBean has become unstable. Every so often, it crashes and reboots. Aside from re-flashing, any other advise?
Also, the battery life seems to be just so so. I tried the kernel included and Matr1x 25.

AOKP with Matr1x seems to be rather stable and ok with the battery.

recommend a rom for me

i just traded my htc vivid for my bros samsung infuse. I loved the vivid but my bro wants it and infuse was mine in the first place. did some swapping around with my brothers. I just hate the stock rom and all the bloatwares. Can someone recomment a smooth stable rom for the infuse? also one that can tether.
Which Rom is a personal preferance.
I currently run F1 Innovation, Fast, Stable and smooth. Not sure about tethering.
F1 Innovation
Check out the super thread: Infuse Super Thread
The current miui does tethering very stable and fast. Also the battery drain seems to be fixed which is a huge plus.

Still i haven't installed it but I read that CyanogenMod 7 works flawlessly on the Infuse. I read you can use it to connect usb devices to your phone so i guess it can do pretty anything, tethering included.
The only thing that seems to work crappy is audio through bluetooth but i bet it's not a big problem : bluetooth is one of the most stupid and unsecure tecnologies ever invented.
You will find on this forum tons of informations about roms...just read it!
I have a preference for Infuse based ROM on my infuse.
they are listed in the dev section under superthread

Don't install a Samsung based rom, which is everything but CM7 or MIUI. Both CM7 and MIUI are AOSP based. MIUI is too much like iOS for my liking. I have been running CM7 on my infuse since I got it, and before that on my inspire, and before that on my captivate. CM7 is the only way to go.
For what it's worth, I'm running CM7, the newest nightly on 1/19. Very stable (some apps I had while running stock Froyo or Infused 2.2.3? would force close alot, not on CM7, but it's a very selective few apps I use for work), very smooth, very fast, overclockable to at least 1.4 gHz for most people. Some people do 1.6 gHz but it's not stable for my phone. You can undervolt it by some amounts for that extra battery savings, and it's constantly having features added to it, like T9 dialing that I discovered was included (much MUCH love for this small thing).
For all the added features, I regularly go through my phone and make sure I don't have apps that do things that are now part of the phone, so I keep the app list short and sweet. Having redundant features means that 2 things are trying to do the same thing, and I'd rather punch out my battery more and more without giving up some conveniences I had Dialer One on my phone, and it's not that great looking, but I had it just for the T9 dialing. Once I saw that CM7 had a T9 dialing feature, I uninstalled Dialer One. The music app, while not as heavy on the eye candy, made me get rid of Doubletwist and Airsync. Airsync never really worked great, for me at least.
CM7 doesn't have fully working bluetooth on the Infuse, some people have trouble with auto brightness (my personal preference is that I'd rather use the status bar slider to adjust brightness), and HDMI out doesn't work. It also has some extra niceties, such as theming, a DSP Manager app (that controls audio levels and equalizers), and is pretty much always being updated.
The drop down bar can be customized almost entirely, and because bluetooth doesn't work, not that I want it, I got rid of that icon. I replaced it with a screen timeout toggle. It has many more options than that.
One thing, and I don't think this is CM7 exclusive, is that sometimes my text messages won't send. I'm using GOSMS as my messaging app until the stock messaging app starts sending ALL of my texts. MMS relies on a data connection so I tend to pull the drop down and enable that when I want to send a picture or download one. Once it starts working the same way, I'm uninstalling GOSMS because it tends to be heavy and sometimes lags up noticeably.
I don't use bluetooth, and I don't think I've ever opened that HDMI dongle packaging, much less tried to use it. While it would be nice if they functioned, I get from day to day without even thinking about those. Your mileage may vary.
I'll throw my support behind CM7. I briefly tried ZEUS, but switched back after a couple days.

The only way to get a rom that has everything working like it should is to flash an infused based rom ...NOT an aosp rom..... cm7 is good if you don't need Bluetooth....as cm7 and miui use a different bt stack then Samsung ...so in my opinion that issue wont be fixed....and they have been known to have data issues....flash ANY of the infuse based Rome if you want complete functionality....period

Like others say if you need BT audio or HDMI stick with Samsung roms. I could care less about both, i have been bouncing back and forth between CM7 and MIUI for months now whenever there is a noteworthy update. Both are very quick and clean in my opinion and you can't go wrong with either one. I have tried most Samsung roms available but they are always short lived on my device...they always feel as if lacking something. Props to the devs for making them available though!!!
thank guys for the responses.. I am currently running the cm7.. looks great and smooth but i got a few issues maybe its the phone itself.
first: seems like my internet/wifi doesnt stay on at times or its not using wifi even tho its turned on.
second: the browser seems to be very slow and it force closes at times maybe it the site that i go to. ESPN scoreboards, i bet a lot so i check scores frequently and open a lot of pages.
third: yeah, battery does seem to go fast maybe because of the excessive use of the web.
BTW do you guys have to put in any apns?? I didnt'.
I don't think it's your phone. I'm still new at this, but as I understand it, you can make/flash tweaks and different modems that may help with the issues you encounter. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm on cm7 and I keep going back to it everytime I flash something new. It just works the best for me. As for data issues, you need to setup the apn fix listed in n0ctrnl's compiled cm7 thread. It's in the original post I believe. Also I flashed the latest modem (uckl2) found in the sticky of development section for modems

Go to wifi settings, hit menu button and go to advanced. Under wifi sleep policy choose never. Should fix the wifi connection issues your having.
I've tried many, but Zeus is the best one that's fully functional (BT and HDMI).
if i flash the miui rom, can i just wipe data and cache than flash the rom? or do i need to do something else?

Definately Zeus for now. It's snappy, everything works and theres even a few themes as well as an ICS launcher. All the AT&T bloat has been removed. I used to prefer stock, but Zeus made me convert. It's just more responsive than any other rom for the Infuse.
It's all a matter of personal preference. I've run about 12-15 different ROMs on my Infuse so far. I keep coming back to Sensation 1.1. I really like being able to edit my status bar.
I didn't care for the camera in CM7, but it is a very nice running ROM. Only thing I miss is not having an extended power menu.
Just play with a bunch of them until you find one you like.

[Q] Any good ICS solution for Rogers users as of April 2nd?

I've read through the threads on all the forums, and nothing definitive yet. Also things are changing so fast over the last few days, I figured this needed asking.
I'm hearing people say that some of the zip cooked ROMs can be installed on the 727R but only if you have the leak installed first with ODIN.
When I go through the leaked ROM thread, it says it doesn't work on Roger's Skyrockets.
So is there any way to take a stock, or non-stock GB ROM and get either the leaked ROM or a cooked ROM onto a 727R?
Thanks
This works on Rogers. I flashed this from stock rooted Rogers GB.

i didn't see anything about rogers incompatibility in this thread?

+1 today it's been unstable for me a lot and the battery leak is still happening
I think there may be slight differences between the Skyrocket & Rogers version, that only Samsung know about.
One only has to look at the Samsung Focus 1.3 & 1.4 revisions. Both are identical except for a minor difference, but it caused major headaches for MS when pushing updates. It wouldn't surprise me if Samsung does the same on the Android side.
So with this leak your running an unfinished ROM, & one that may not be intended for your revision of hardware
i think that could very well be true. because of this battery drain 2-3% every less than half hour is like does this rom really feel it should be like this. also reboot issues, rom hanging in here & there, its not about the "work-around" but actual work seems very unstable. their devs are even soo stupid that when i ripped dialer.apk they spelled dailer in 1 of the imgs rather then dialer..it made me laugh soo hard..

I've tried this version, Mostly worked ok but my caller ID stopped working?
I'm a newb so I can't post over there to find out if anyone else saw the same issue... maybe I did something wrong but everything else seemed to be great?
Thank you everyone for responding. Gonna wait a few days and see how this plays out for Rogers uses. Hope other Rogers users post results here.
If you are on Rogers, flash the thing from the second post then flash any of the other ICS ROMs.
GB-->ICS works
I used ICSMOD5 from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566820
What I did:SGH-i727R
My ROM was running Malice from T989, with Streamline Kernel.
1)Backup!
2)Factory Reset
3)Advanced - Wipe Dalvik
4)Manual reset: - Mounts and storage, Format system, data & cache
5)Flash UCLA4 ICS radio
6)Flash the ICSMOD5_wipe version
7)Boot
8)Wait...wait even more...don't panic...
9)Enjoy
Everything including data and gps, and time issues were okay.
On the apex launcher, the messenger icon is bonked, just remove the shortcut and put the messaging shortcut again.
Wifi Tether: Starts up via toggle mod, can set password and stuff, computer connects to it but no data goes thru.
Will report back on battery use and possible issues.
So far so good.

Flash this modem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24140728&postcount=5
Then type *#2263# into the Phone and Select "[4] LTE Band Preference" then "[7] LTE ALL". Once you get an LTE signal, then type *#2263# again and this time Choose "[1] Automatic" and it should work.
I've had to do this a few times, but I have gotten stable LTE on all the ICS builds so far.

Thank you to the developers of MR3

I wanted to thank the developers of MR3 in this thread. Liquid, Jester, etc.
I'm a long time lurker of this forum since I got my Thunderbolt. I'm VERY VERY appreciative of the developers for creating a very functional ICS rom for the Thunderbolt. Shame on HTC and Verizon for sandbagging so long with what should be a very simple upgrade for them. I was running Thundershed for awhile but grew tired of the Gingerbread look and feel of Android. My friends all mostly have newer phones with ICS, and I couldn't believe that it was supposed to be out in August and it's now mid-October and it's still not out.
To my surprise, I log on to here and see that an ICS ROM had been released.
My only issues with this ROM are random restarts and the white screen error in Facebook/Gmail/etc. I don't really use the video camera much in general; could you use an aftermarket app, or is it broken period?
Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE this and will never go back to Verizon's bloated software. Even when an OTA is released with ICS I won't go back. My phone is running much faster and much better than with Sense and Gingerbread. With data off I had a 10% decrease in battery in 7 hours; with data on and normal use I'll get maybe 5 hours out of a charge on this ROM. About normal for this phone and it's absolutely terrible battery life with the stock battery.
I have it overclocked to 1.5ghz running interactiveX as my governor. It runs beautifully, other than those two minor issues I pointed out above. I haven't experienced any data drops or anything out of the sort like that.

I second this thread.
A major thanks goes out to all of you who develop, in any way, for the Thunderbolt community. This even includes testers.
To answer your questions...
The video and front camera are broken even with an aftermarket app and will remain broken, most likely, until Verizon releases the OTA. From the OTA, our awesome developers will then be able to fix camera issues and many other issues that will make their ROM's 100% stable.
Also, if you get random reboots, you may want to flash to a different radio.
If you are currently running the OTA radios from the 2.11.605.19 software and still get these reboots, try flashing the combo radio and hopefully the reboots will vanish or, at least, happen less often.
If you go to your settings, about phone, software information, more, and look at the baseband version...
If the numbers you see are:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then you are on the OTA 2.11.605.19 radios, which is my recommendation for the radios to use with this ROM. If these are the radio numbers you see, try the combo radio. If the numbers you see under your phones baseband version is not:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then it may be:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
If it is:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
Try flashing the 2.11.605.19 OTA radios found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605557
If you have the 2.11.605.19 radios, though, try flashing the combo radio found here:

Definitely want to ditto this thread. Thanks for continuing to support the Thunderbolt. I was on the verge of retiring the Thunderbolt. ICS has brought new the Tbolt new life though!
thanks for the links. I'm going to try upgrading tonight and see if that helps. I notice you flash the radio in hboot. If I do a nandroid backup, does it also backup the radio (so I can restore it)? Or if I **** up, will it be permanently bricked?
Ditto to all that has been said. Thank You to all who made this happen, including HTC and Verizon. Their inaction drove me to decide to root and find alternatives. I've been incredibly pleased with MR3.
Thanks all!

If you backup that ROM after flashing the radio, it will back up the ROM. Hboot is a whole different thing than the recovery. That radio is downloaded to the phone and will automatically run on any ROM after its downloaded, even if you start from scratch. But flashing any of those two radios will not brick you on any ROM. Worst case being you won't have signal or data until you flash different radios again.
Say if you upgraded to the newer radios, and then you flash a ROM based on an older software version, you won't brick. In fact, you may not ever experience any issues. Maybe just signal changes or random signal drops.
But no, it won't brick you. It's almost impossible to brick a Thunderbolt.
I recommend after flashing the new radios, immediately go and either change the name from PG05IMG to something custom, move into a different folder that's off of the root of the SD card, or just delete it once flashed.
This is for in a such case where you need to get back into recovery from hboot, it won't prompt you to install the radio again. Because if you had to get into recovery from hboot, it wouldn't allow you to since it runs a check for the PG05IMG files first... and with that being said... I was always told to never flash the same radio twice without changing to a new one first.

i dont' see why these ROMs get so much acclaim... when i tried LiquidSmooth it wouldn't stay connected to the Internet. tried to toggle wifi and 3G/4G. nothing works and i have to reboot the phone every time i want to use the Internet.
Liquid MR3: the setup crashed and now the ROM won't even come all the way up...
unless my phone's broken or something (going to Verizon tomorrow to reflash and check it), i say they're both absolute garbage. i've had much better luck with ROMs on other phones.

well i reflashed Liquid this morning and it didn't crash this time, connected fine via wifi and setup completed properly.
all of my radio issues were on the old version (not sure if there's a difference in radios or whatnot), but if it acts up again i will try your recommendations. thanks a lot.

ah i see what happened now.
the first time i flashed it, i cleared /data after the flash before i brought the OS up, but you've included the launcher as a user app and not a system app. was this intentional? a user could easily screw up by uninstalling the launcher and have no way to interact with the OS. shouldn't there be a default launcher embedded in the system programs?
i'm an Android dev, but my understanding of system development is limited, but if i'm not mistaken, any Android ROM should come with a default launcher that is not uninstallable and has no icon as a backup launcher just in case.
He did install it that way so if the user wants to install their own launcher and remove the default. Its simple to make the new one a system app. All that has to be done is move the apk to /system and it is uninstallable.

What's the general consensus on the JB leak?

I know the leak is out there in the dev section, but I'm having trouble getting a feeling or consensus on the quality of the rom. In particular, I'm most concerned with battery life and general crashing/incompatibilities that might occur going about basic operations. Anyone care to share their experience so far? Is it more worth waiting til Jan/Feb when I'm guessing Verizon might finally release JB?

I've been running the CleanRom ULE version of this since the day it was posted and love it. Quite noticeably faster and smoother than ICS. GPS lock is faster than it ever was on ICS. Mobile data is the same as it was - I'm in a pretty good 4G area and have no problems. One thing I have noticed is that Wifi is pickier when I'm on the fringe of the signal. Some places where I used to be able to connect, I can't any more. But if I'm in a stronger signal area it's just fine.
I hate that my notification bar isn't straight black. It's like, off black but not quite grey.

Lol, I thought I was the only one who cared about that.....kinda annoys me.
Other than that, it runs super great for me. I was on it for the first three days or so, but needed my cm10 fix again. Its so good that I usually spend about half my week cm10, half on one of the jb leaks.

VRBLI5 JellyBean is better in certain areas and worse in others compared to ICS...overall I would give it a slight edge. I bet the official update will polish things up a bit. You have to remember the JB leak is dated oct. 8th. There was a reason it did not make it as a official ota...its still pretty good for a leak, definately not complaining by anymeans. :good:
The one from incubus hadn't given me a single problem yet. I think my battery life actually improved. After about 11 hrs yesterday mine was still at 30% (Bluetooth on, brightness up).
I think it's great. I'm using Synergy, which I think is excellent (always has been). If you use this ROM, you should also flash the radio update (I5) and RPM (power management) update. The radio is definitely improved - I'm not having my calls constantly dropped anymore in below-average signal locations!! Very happy with this update.
I flashed the Incubus RLS11 yesterday and it ran fine for a while. Things were smooth. Didn't notice any problems.
I'm in the sticks but I get pretty good LTE. To make sure I don't lose it when I need it I use the Phone Info app to go LTE only. That worked great on stock or stock-rooted-unlocked. It even worked good on CM10 and AOKP-M1. But for some reason on the Incubus ROM I started having real problems.
I tried forcing LTE only which would work for a few seconds and then would switch back automatically to the default LTE/CDMA/EvDo. After playing around with it some more it got stuck in CDMA auto (PRL) for a while and then GSM auto (PRL) and then EvDo only. It was really weird. I got tired of messing with it so I restored my stock image.
I didn't do the radios or RPM which was probably my problem. The links on the page I got the rom from were dead.
I'll try again, just didn't want to fool with it last night. Other than the radio issue it was real smooth. I'm a freak, I kinda really like TouchWiz. I was on stock or CM or KANG so much on my GNex, I'm enjoying the skinned experience. The biggest thing I miss from the GNex is JB though.
Been running JellyWiz RLS12 all week and it's been great. Battery life is same it was stock. Some have had issues with battery, but if you read through the thread for that ROM, I believe there are fixes. The only issue I have that is unresolved is I am not able to play movies or tv back through the Google Play Movies and TV app. The phone just reboots. Not a big deal for me right now, and Google Now easily makes up for it.
I have been running the lastest leak for two days now, the biggest changes I noticed, are the following
1. the Driving mode on/off toggle seems to have been removed from the pulldown bar, but driving mode itself is still there. (I downloaded a home screen widget to turn it on and off quickly)
2. The entire phone itself, from games, to movies, to youtube videos seems.....smoother and more refined (I blame Project Butter)
3. Slight battery life improvement :good:
4. if you use facial unlock, they moved the camera bypass from bottom to top right corner
My only complaint so far is that when I get a text message, missed call, voicemail I get the "Swipe over Icon to view the missed event" alert.
Don't get me wrong those nice little alerts help introduce to you new features of the phone. I don't mind them once or twice, but this specific one on the lock screen, I can't get rid of. Any ideas?

Under the wireless (WIFI) settings you have to disable "Avoid poor connections"..should help that
Just wantes to update that im having alot better battery life on J1...im at 20hrs, 2hrs screen on, 44% left.
Jelly Beans build running great.
Tapatalk'd / Galaxy SIII on Jelly Beans
Have the same hotspot issues but otherwise it's pretty smooth. Very quick and yes I know everyone says that but it's not a placebo. I even put my phone back to stock because I need foxfi and it is considerable slower... Not slower but just not as quick to respond

Running Cleanrom 4.5 that is JB- Battery is awesome, rom feels fast and smooth.
These are the item I found wrong with the latest JB leak: (at least on my phone)
After an alarm goes off and you try and lock your phone, it won't lock. The screen will turn off but won't stay off. You have to unlock your phone to home screen then relock it.
New Samsung keyboard was incredibly laggy.
When trying to delete an extra home screen the phone would lock up and then say "touchwiz home has stopped working."
I don't think this was a bug but to get to the task manager, I had to hold down the home button for like 5 seconds!
There was another thing but I can't remember it. I was running the untouched leak, via Odin. I went back to stock.

I'm on the same leak your on and I'm not having the problems you had. I tested the alarm and turning the screen off.... No issue. I also tried deleting a page the same way you described and it worked fine. I use SwiftKey so I haven't tried the keyboard.

I'm running Combination_i535VRBLJ1_381038_REV09_USER_LOW_SHIP(NO WIPE) on a Verizon phone.
I have been running it for two days, so far very stable, love Google Now.
The only thing I've noticed is that the icon for voice input in messaging is not there, and it is turned on. Never mind found that........
It was from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114

LineageOS

Has anyone attempted to install the base LineageOS on their Verizon m8?
If so, what was the level of success? Does everything work?

I am using LineageOS on my VZW m8. I am having issues with my data disconnecting intermittently. Everything else seems to be working fine.
So ...glad I found this thread, as I was going to create my own (though I think general might be a better place for it...I'll suggest to mods).
Hopefully this can be a good place for all of us VZW M8 users to discuss our LOS experiences.
I just started looking for a new ROM after months of hating the stock MM update. I'm hoping to get another year or so out of my M8.
So far I have narrowed it down to:
NuSenseSeven - A really nice Sense 7 MM build that doesn't seem to have the performance issues of stock MM.
Wolla - Nice clean Sense 8 MM build with a healthy collection of tweaks to configure.
Lineage (LOS) - Nougat build for M8 (only one?). Clean, fast AOSP-like ROM with ability to build extremely light and add what you need from gapps.
So far these are my main issues with Lineage after trying for only a few days:
Not HTC specific. So you are going to lose out on some HTC tools and menus. Something like HTC Connect to cast media, or the comprehensive gesture support HTC has. Some of these you can get back through third party apps, but not all of it and not really as well integrated as you get with HTC/Sense. There are about 5-10 things that a ROM like Wolla has that I can't find the same settings in LOS. Basically I'm deciding if I want to lose out on those to get the benefits on being on the latest possible Android for the phone.
Right now I'm leaning 80% yes on LOS, but I might decide to go back to Wolla or NuSenseSeven. I would need to do some more testing between those two before I decided on which one though.
Although there is a lack of some features in those ROMS, there are other features that you will only get in LOS like the updated Nougat notification system, Privacy Guard, and maybe a few others. So you need to choose what is best for you.
As far as speed/stability/etc. So far I have been really impressed with LOS, though all builds I mention have been way better than stock MM in the few days I've been testing. Here are the only known issues/bugs that I have had with LOS so far:
1) NFC icon. The NFC icon doesn't appear in the status bar, so you can't see at a glance if it is enabled (you can see it in quick launch though). I think this is a regression and there is a bug listed for it. I actually haven't tested the NFC yet though, but it appears that it works, just no notification icon.
2) Double list of APN in mobile settings. This is just a display bug...for some reason the menu option is there twice.
3) I too have had some data/connection issues, but I am not ready to rule the ROM as the issue yet. Basically on the quicklaunch bar it was showing my data connection as "No service" instead of "Verizon Wireless." It would say Verizon sometimes, but not always. I couldn't tell if this was an issue with the display or not because my other ROMS didn't have a comparable icon, so I had to start looking at the hidden phone menus to see what my connection was saying. Sure enough, my phone didn't appear to be getting a carrier name listed when I was using LOS most of the time, but it was there all the time (at least all my testing time) on other ROMs.
As I was trying to compare/troubleshoot this by flashing different ROMS and radios at some point I got to a point where my 4G wouldn't work at all (stuck at 3G). This was the case even when flashing back to pure stock everything. I spent the better part of a day working on this and couldn't find the solution until I found a few other threads of people discussing no 4G connection and the only solution was a new SIM card. Sure enough I got a new SIM from Verizon today and 4G came back immediately. I reflashed LOS and on boot it shows I'm on Verizon, so I'm hoping it stays.
Stumbled into this thread last week, and was curious. Currently running LineageOS 14.1-20170727 and I'm impressed. Been running fine for about a week now with no major issues. Getting a slightly better battery life, better responsiveness, and good 4G connectivity.
Only minor issues have been spotty WiFi connection, though it might have just been due to a weak signal. That and USB tethering doesn't appear to be working yet. Wifi Tethering seems to work fine though.
**Edit** USB tethering does work. Don't know why it wasn't earlier. Perhaps a bad USB cable
How to get it?
I'd like to try this ROM on my M8. Did you guys just flash the ROM for the regular M8 not a ported Version?
If yes, is it safe to do that. I have the GPE ROM installed on my M8 running GSM not CDMA.
Thanks!

Yeah, I just tried out the regular M8 version "One 2014 (m8)", and it worked just fine. No special setup coming from the GPE Rom, other than a full wipe. ( That's what I was running as a daily driver before ) It took a long time for the first boot, and it even rebooted on its own after the initial flashing and reboot. Give it a try. I've been really happy with it thus far.
working well except roaming
I've been running lineage on my verizon M8 for a couple months with excellent results - except when I'm out of the country roaming. In Canada and now Chile the same thing is happening - the network appears for one second, then gone the next, and repeat. Sometimes it's connected long enough for a text to get through, but not enough for any data usage. And it keeps asking me to select my sim card, and of course I have only 1.
LOS 15 is amazing. Everything works perfectly fine. I just wish LOS performed as smooth as Sense based ROMs
Any custom kernels available for M8s running LineageOS?
