Hi Guys
Samsung Captivate is my very first Smartphone and i always knew i was gonna get an android phone.
I bought this phone yesterday and i absolutely love it.
But i am facing some problems
1. the phone is a bit laggy.
2. the battery life doesnt seem very great.
3. The third one is very weird. I went to the android market to download apps. Once i select an app to download and install, there is no notification on the top area where it should show it. I mean it takes almost 10-15 minutes for that notification to show up and the phone is very unresponsive during these times. Also the music player crashed a couple of times.
Has anyone come across this problem. Please let me know!
Well , that was the first part..
I want to know the experiences of people who have already rooted the phone and installed Froyo on it. What are the noticeaable changes? Is there any improvement in battery life?
I am pretty sure i wanna root this phone and get rid of the ATT apps etc etc.
BTW i have attached a wallpaper which i hope u guys will like
Cheers

There is no Froyo for captivate , not yet anyway.
Root by itself doesn't fix anything , just lets you change system files and tinker around, more freedom so to speak.
Personally i am not having those problems, maybe you installed something that is eating up all resources, i have had similar problems on my Nexus one when i was downloading bunch of random programs and experimenting...
Try one of those app killers or restart phone maybe.

I factory reset my phone too , and i still have to install apps after resetting. Will keep you guys updated. BTW i thought rooting was to install froyo on the captivate.
I did not know tht it was just for the workarounds.
Hello guys
Please help me
I still am facing the same problem.
I have installed the AppBrain and fest web browser apps too, but somehow it still takes me a minimum of 10-15 mins before the download begins. And during that time the phone is very slow and unresponsive.
Is anyone else facing the same problem.
Please let me know!

I've noticed something similar to what you are talking about, but defiantly not to such extend. Marketplace seems to be slow on my phone, at least comparing to my brother's Evo. Sometimes just after I start download of a new app, the phone becomes unresponsive for a bit, but it doesn't freeze or anything, just I start noticing some lag, that's all. To your other concerns:
1. Remove Live Wallpaper and as many widgets from your screen as you can. After I did that, I don't have any lag at all. You can also use manual task killer application to shut down all of the AT&T crap that runs on background (and prevent them to start up again).
2. Coming from feature phone, battery live will always look bad on the Smartphone. For me, battery lasts the whole day, from 9AM till 12PM even with a heavy use. For a Smartphone, that's good results.
Only times I have had lag is when something is installing. Also when my network connection is bad and something is trying to pull data.
But then again i just switched from a Kaiser running WinMo to this phone, so I may just be use to lag by now

So total noob question. What exactly is the lag thats being fixed? Is there a specific lag or is it more of a general slowness of the phone?
Thanks!!
Some apps open slow. Some people notice lag in booting the phone. Mainly overall feel i guess. Like you said.

The lag that is being referred to is a lag caused by samsung's property rfs file system that samsung put on this phone. As far as I can tell there is a flaw in data write where the rfs file system can pause for as much as second - and when you get multiple process waiting in line to write data it causes a very noticeable lag in the phone as it will come to almost a standstill.
If you don't nice anything don;t worry about it....LOL
I see more issues caused by lag fixing than those who don't bother with them...especially when loading new ROMS A slight hesitation now and then doesn't bother me.....Perfection is not the goal.
I've found I don't need a lagfix for Cog's 2.2 beta 5.6.
I get a hiccup every once in a while but otherwise everything seems to run fine. And it's still a billion times faster than my old iPhone so I'm happy either way. (I had to wait to do EVERYTHING on that POS)

Exactly how do this happen ? Can this be replicated on this phone so everyone can see it ? I have seen and experienced wake up lag on Androids that have non stock roms..and also the damnable phone dialer lag as well with my Hero..but have yet had this problem with my Captivate....So.. what does one have to do to see it on the Captivate? Your saying the file system that is causing this correct...I don't believe it is the same thing other Android phones are experiencing and what has been called LAG to honest with you..if it were then everyone that had this phone would be complaining about it. Sometimes I had to swipe 4 or 5 times to unlock my Hero..or having tried to dial a number only to have 5 or 6 extra numbers punched in because of the LAG..
I think what you seeing and what is being described here as LAG isn't really the LAG of most Android based phones are having..What I think is being described is just a slight hesitation of certain applications being opened and closed..This is normal for any computer depending on what and how large the program is.The file system used with these may indeed cause this but it is nothing as compared to a phone that really Lags. Boot lag is something entirely different..and as far as I can tell can be caused by what is loaded on the phone and not really the phone itself, unless the phone isn't really wiping any residual data before applying a new rom and thus causing conflicts on booting.
If this wasn't the case..then every Galaxy phone would do this..complete stock or one that has been customized. I may be totally wrong..but I don't think I am..

The problem isn't on other Android phones because other Android phones don't use RFS. RFS is a Samsung thing.
And just about every person does complain about the lag... how severe it is depends on how heavy of a user you are so a few uber-light users might not notice it so much.
Me? I notice things like occasionally 10-30 seconds after returning to my home screen for my icons to appear, hesitation in keyboard entry causing massive typos and repeated keypresses, unresponsiveness of home keys only to have it suddenly register all queued presses, etc.
I acknowledge the problem but unfortunately a lot of the "lag fix" hacks cause more harm than good.

I did not say that I ever saw this lag myself - I was just answering the question as to what was being fixed in the lag fixes - and the rfs file system hang that happens at the sync on close at the end of a write is what these guys are attempting to address with these lag fixes.
I am not even using a lagfix as the current custom rom I am running is running just fine without one.
Here this thread gives more in depth description and explanation of the rfs lag
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=799931
i feel the lag is caused by touchwiz and exaggerated by the file system. i never noticed a complete lack of lag with a lagfix. things got slightly less choppy but i think there is a big placebo effect around here. in eclair my phone was still laggy with any and all lagfix's that i tried including voodoo.
the leaked froyo doesn't lag too much but doesn't update the wallpaper on wakeup if you are running live walpapers so you get a black background ocasionally. applying the z4mod lagfix to froyo makes a difference in bootup and wakeup but is not totally necessary. actually there is a big potential for problems and forgetting to remove a lagfix before flashing will turn into a headache really fast.
The video in the below thread gives a clear enough demonstration of the effect. A lag in opening emails, or marking email unread, that is at least around 2 seconds every time and 5 seconds at one point. After a lagfix is installed, it consistently takes well under one second to perform the same operations.
As I understand it, lagfixes either re-partition the file system entirely with a new file system, or create a large cache so that data can be accessed quickly without as much interaction with the filesystem.

While the video does indeed show lag in opening everything with that custom rom..where is the video showing the same issue with that phone prior to any modifications using the stock rom..? I'm not talking about one that has been rooted and re flashed..I am talking about one straight out of the box... If it took that long just to boot up with cog..then there really is something wrong. From a dead stop with the battery out to being fully up and running..takes less than 45 seconds with mine running staright from the box stock. Either I don't understand everything( big possibility) or something is either wrong with that phone with that rom installed on it.
I'm not trying to say this isn't Lag on the video..it clearly shows it..but I do question why a fair comparison isn't being shown..As much as I hate to say it..it looks like the biggest amount of issues I have seen here is from folks who have rooted and flashed new roms. BTW..my email opens as fast as the fixed one does as well. I am sure someone does have these issues (perhaps not to this degree) on a unaltered phone..but I also think it is exactly what I said earlier too..that some of it is normal..but some want everything instantaneously...and I don't believe that will happen for sometime.
I do understand what folks do here and why..I'm not totally dumb when it comes to rooting and flashing...but to me and the way I am seeing it..something somewhere isn't being taken into account here with how this rom is acting. I know a lot went into developing it..but..in all honesty to my eyes it looks like it isn't fully optimized yet, even with what has been done with it so-far.Of course I have absolutely no way of knowing what that phone did when it was totally stock either...but with out a true side bt side comparison video of the same phone..nor will anyone else. Also..I don't blame folks who want something different..Hell..if folks didn't try to make changes..nothing new would ever get developed, but sometimes trying to fix something that works fine,is cutting off your nose to spite your face too..
To me..instead of trying to replace the file system with something different..why not try to make a rom using it..? The phones are spec'd to use it..so use it..optimize it..and see if most all of these "issues" go away..Maybe easier said than done..I don't know..but that's how I look at it.

The stock email is not the one shown in the video, it is touchdown which many use to sync their corporate email accounts as the stock program is inadequate or not compatible.
If you have not noticed the lag then you don't need a lagfix. Data intensive operations do exploit the flaws in the rfs system however and many experience better performance after installing one.
As for startup time, lagfix really has nothing to do with this. Regardless of setup, the phone will boot only slightly faster with one.
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.
For what its worth. I remember showing my coworker my lagfixed 2.1 and we compared to his stock, and did a side by side on browser, email and a couple of other apps. It was a big enough impression that he immediately installed oclf.

Well..that make me wonder if all of these issues are a QC issue from Samsung..I do know I had to go through 7 different phones(all new not refurbs) for the wife last week we we signed up wit AT&T...
I guess I'll wait till the official non beta release of 2.2 is out before I start changing mine. This will give me a better understanding on how everything is right now..as opposed to flashing a different rom,and see if the phone starts acting up.
Thanks

While I am rooted now (reluctantly, due to some things that I need to run that require it), my lag predates that as I only rooted recently. Lag of 10 seconds at a time is not uncommon... whether it's a freeze while using the keyboard, trying to pull down the notification bar, trying to switch apps, trying to use the "Home" key, or waiting for the home screen icons to re-appear. I've counted delays as long as 30 seconds at times.
If lagfixes weren't so dirty and unsafe, I'd be their biggest proponent.
Been contemplating for a while whether to post this as it will come off as rather trollish. Had my Infuse for over a year now. When I first got it I noticed there were some "issues". I remained patient hoping or thinking maybe when GB was released it would improve. It did not. Later I needed to root this phone and came here, found a ROM that had all the AT&T junk stripped out. Phone worked better, but still had these issues.
I got to the point that I knew I would never again purchase either a Samsung phone or Android. Did not know what the culprit was. Just recently I had the chance to really take a look at an HTC EVO, and I realized that Samsung is the problem, not Android.
Number one issue is that this phone is sluggish, and sometimes unresponsive. I will touch whatever button and get that vibrating acknowledgement, but nothing happens. I will be in the app menu and wish to exist and the home button just does not respond.
Yesterday I missed a call because the bloody phone just did not respond, even though I touched the answer button. Other times I just can not make a call. I dial number, and the phone just sits there doing nothing. Eventually I just pull out the battery and restart the phone to make a simple bloody call. I had a HTC WinMo phone for years and never once experienced this. No matter how farked the OS could get with some app or whatever, the phone function always worked.
I do not run a lot of apps, and recently have experienced these issues with almost literally no apps installed. I will then add something like GO taskmanger just to confirm that the unresponsive behavior is not due to some app taking up memory/CPU etc..
Sorry for the long post, but I am at my wits end with this bloody phone. The fact that I miss calls when the **** phone is right in my hand is unacceptable. So before placing this phone in a box filled with C4 and shooting this to the moon, hoping that maybe a solution is out there.
p.s. I have 2 Infuse in use, both have the same issue.
What firmware are you running?
Is it the same firmware on both phones?
What is the launcher?
Have you tried a different modem?
Are you using a battery saver like juice defender?
Are you using an ad blocker?
Are you using a specific kernel? Oc? Uv?
Need for specific info

You know, for the rather lengthy post, you really have not explained any detail about your issue.. You have a generic 'I have an issue, the Infuse sucks' post and its not going to help anyone resolve your issue. I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that you have 2 infuses having the SAME EXACT ISSUE. Yes, there will be times when you get a defective phone or it isnt working up to your standards, but to have 2 defective phones with the same defect? You need to play the lottery. Also, i suggest you send the phones back. It sounds like youve already made your mind up and have pretty much bashed the samsung infuse in that entire post. The same samsung infuse that myself, and plenty of other people live with day to day and have absolutely 0 complaints.
I will give you $20.00 a piece for them!!!!

Simple . Hack it and put cm7 on it if you really need speed. Maybe its your screen protecter. Wipe the screen off. Cm9 can be sluggish, for speed go to miui on gingerbread or cm7
Id be willing to buy one of the infuses
Trust me...sounds like you got two defective units...which like Scott, I find hard to believe...but hey its possible-idk when you got hem.but if it hasn't been a year then put them back to stock with gtgs unbrick and file a warranty claim with Samsung...the infuse is a great phone and I never had the problem you described...I do have a question though...did you get them both at the same time? Cause I don't see why you would get a second if your first was having problems
Anyways...if you wanna sell one hmu...I may buy one depending on the price and if I can get the money (I think I already may have one lined up for $170 just need to get the money)

Again this has been a recurring problem since purchase, and during this time I have had stock Froyo, rooted Froyo ROM, GB update, and for one now a the GB rooted ROM.
When the slow to unresponsiveness occurs there does not appear to be any specific cause. Prior to updating to the rooted GB I had used GO Taskmanager, and long before that some other app I long since forgot the name of. Point was that they had shown that neither CPU was excessive, or memory was used up. Both phones have data services disabled and are strictly Wifi only. There are no tasks or extra programs run in the background (though did install Connectbot today). I no longer use any Live wallpaper. After updating to the rooted GB I left the phone in that state (no software installed) for a week or so, and the problem still occured.
This occurs when calling or answering calls, but as previously posted occurs sometimes just opening the Applications menu as an example. So it is not a specific task or program that is slow or unresponsive. Earlier this evening I got a call, slide the bar across to answer and the screen just hung there for a few moments. This time it was at least not long enough that I missed the call. When the call was done I looked and there simply was nothing running on the phone. No apps, no web browser or mail, in fact I was not even connected to the wifi (I have data 3G/4G service disabled on the phone).
are you completely wiping before every flash youve done? have you tried a complete wipe and start from fresh?

Task manager is NOT the best app to tell you what is running in the background.
Maps and other location apps may not be listed but will consume resourse that can be the cause of your lag.
The fact that stopping wallpaper or live wall paper off alleviate the condition may suggest that the phone is running at max capacity. Steps to reduce the load improves it. Live wp, facebook, maps, stock email and other device manager from stock att was one of the first @#$% I took out on any rom I run.
Having a large amount of apps installed can also cause this lag. The OS may only be able to handle so many.
Have a poor signal at the time of the call may also be an issue, especially if both of your phones have this issue occasionally but not consistently.
Lock screen can also be a factor. Some sleep setting may also cause the phone to wake up poorly. I get around this by turning off my lock screen. On the call settings, you can also change the answering options so that it will override others and make it easy to answer.
On any firmware - stock or modded, after you have the phone running for an extended period of time without a reboot, you may start to see some lags. This may be across all devices. You may need to reboot it occasionally or boot into recovery and wipe the cache.
These issues may or not go away once you have a device with more power or resources..ex: dual or quad core, 1gb or 2gb ram etc..my guess is when a device has more power, programmers will come up with more resourse intensive apps that may hinder the phone as well.
Lastly, pay attention to your battery meter. As the power dips below 30%, there are steps taken by the OS to conserve the battery. This may give you lags as well..possibly one of the reason why it seems random also.
If you wanted to test out the lag issue due to background apps, go to settings/account and sync. turn off background data. You will retain the (radio) phone and text but there will be no email/facebook, weather, widgets/market/amazon etc updates unless you manually update them. If this runs smoothly but lags when you turn it back on, you can start the process of narrowing down your culprit.

Hi guys,
I'm an Android poweruser, but definitely no guru, so I decided to share this problem with you guys. Although less urgent, it's still bothering me.
I've recently (a few months ago) purchased my TF300t. For me, it's the perfect device. However, with all it's quad core magic, the browser frequently hangs on me. Sometimes, it just works perfectly, but other times it freezes for about 5 seconds after which I receive the force close image. Would I press wait, I could continue browsing. Until, of course, the next pageload. This might seem like something minor, but it completely ruins the experience of having a great quad core tablet.
Here's some facts:
It happens all around the web, although some websites seem to trigger it the most. An example of this is the website foodgawker.com, which is a responsive website. However, this website never gives problems on my S2 with CM9.
It happens randomly. At one moment it may happen each pageload, or it may not happen at all for about 15 pageloads. Feels random.
Other browsers either give the same problem, or a terrible browsing experience.
Yes, the problem occurs after a factory reset
Yes, I've upgraded to the latest available firmware.
After a lot of dialoque with Asus, I sent it off for repairs. But as expected, all they did was wipe everything on it, and the problem still exists.
In the meantime, Chrome for Android seems to have been updated, and the problem is less apparent.
My questions:
Does anyone else experience these kind of problems with their TF300t?
Would unlocking it and installing CM help?
The reason I'm asking is because I want to determine whether or not this issue is hardware related. I don't want to be messing with custom software when I'm not totally sure the hardware's fine.
Thanks in advance

Yes, exactly so in the stock browser or clones. Hitting "Wait" often seems to fix it. Just shifted to Chrome and haven't seen it happen. Got to say not impressed by the browsing experience with any browser - slowwwwwwwwer than I expected.

So you have exactly the same problem? That kinda saddens me, since exchanging it won't have any use then. Are custom roms known to fix this?
I also have this issue....however after using the "brows2ram" app and root access, it seems to have 90% disappeared.
search XDA for the brows2ram app, install, reboot, and grant superuser permission and it seems to help a lot.
after a lot of reading here and the TF201 (prime) forum it is a fairly common issue and most of the users believe the 5th companion core is to blame.
basically downloading/scrolling (two main things in browser) are both handled by the companion core...so when this is done, it boggs down the processor.
i have yet to hear if someone experiencing this on stock OS also experiences is on a custom ROM....would love to hear this.
but if you can wait, Jelly Bean should be here pretty soon....and since jellybean was built around the nexus 7 which has almost identical specs, all lag should be gone. i expect JB to be here by september....hopefully.
in the mean time, brows2RAM has helped tremendously and makes me not even have a desire to unlock and ROM this thing.

This helps me out so much! It would explain why browsing is the only thing lagging, and games like Dead Trigger work flawlessly. I also forgot the Nexus 7 also has Tegra 3. I'm guessing Jelly Bean will work flawlessly on this tablet.
Thanks to your post I'm going to stop trying to solve this with Asus, as they'll probably won't admit this. I'll keep using chrome until the official update is here. I don't even think I'm going to root, because Chrome works acceptably!
Thanks!
Edit -> Also; September? Asus is that quick? I guess being used to Samsung, anything is quick.
I'm running hydro on tf300 with the stock web browser
the pause and wait option does still happen, but very infrequently
when I was on a stock rom, it happened all the time
now with hydro it rarely happens
And how is fluidity of web browsing? Because for me, even on Chrome, the experience isn't what I'd expect from a high-end tablet.
Try Ics Browser + and enjoy.

web browsing seems fine on hydro
there are still the normal hick ups from time to time
the difference in speed and fuidity between hydro and stock is night and day
after being on hydro for about the last month
I really don't know how I could even stand the stock rom
on hydro everything is super charged, super fast, super smooth
I've noticed the same problem on the stock rom, for that reason I switched to a early version of cm10 with jellybean. Haven't seen it happen again ever since
Hi all,
First of all, I did some research, and didn't find anything related to my question (a special issue I'm having I guess).
Second, I know that Android uses as much Ram as possible, and the more ram it uses, the better it is (but that's not my case).
Here's the problem :
It happened last month, and will happen soon again.
With time, Ram consumption increases in my Nexus 5 daily, bit by bit until only <100Mo is free. This leads to the keyboard not opening up for example, because the Ram is full.
Compared to my Nexus 4 (rooted, PA 4.2b4 [even though I don't think it makes any difference]), apps stay active >200 hours (facebook, viber, ebay, Swiftkey etc.), while on N4, Swifkey is active since 22hours ago for example.
I don't really reboot my Nexus 5 (stock, unrooted), maybe this is the issue ?
When it happened a month ago, I uninstalled a game and it fixed it, until now.. Available Ram is roughly 600Mo, and it's shrinking each day.
I hope I didn't forget anything, if you think I did, please do ask.
Thank you for any suggestions (and for reading this, while you're at it.)
rebooting your phone daily, or every couple days, will keep your phone running at its best. if you dont feel like taking the 20-30 seconds to reboot your phone every once in a while, then deal with it.
Yeah I always recommend regular reboots. Also, maybe you have an app that has a memory leak

Nah, nah, sounds like a good compromise. I'd rather reboot the hell out of it than stay keyboardless..

About memory leaks.. I have no idea, I only have "the basics" installed. I'll do a quick analysis just in case.
Cheers ! :good:
