So after a long live chat with a T-Mo rep about my GPS problems in 2.2.2 and 2.3.3, they are sending me a new one.
It was odd, the rep asked me to remove the battery and look for a small square/circle stick and asked the color. Once i said, white square, and said it needed to be replaced.
What I also found interesting is how the GPS was able to lock quickly when in 2g, "Use only 2g networks." Which was one of the troubleshoot steps. But when going back to 4g, unchecking 2g networks, it wouldn't switch back to 4g. Not allowing Navigation to work because of the needed download speed.
Thought i'd share what happened.

Yeah I thought that's to check for water damage?!
Learn something new everyday.
For sure it is for water damage, its on the actual phone near battery, and on the battery itself, and very easily turns color (pinkish red) watch for moisture, or large puddles
TMobile is now mailing me my 4th replacement device. One of those was from my phone not picking up a GPS signal...at all.
I feel ya man. I understand exactly where you're coming from. They had me do the same check as well.
how do u guys get to do the live chat? everytime i go to the tech support chat it sends me to their forums...?!

This reminds me that I gotta see how my GPS works now after the update. It would work before, but not all the time. And when it did work, sometimes it would be sluggish and not work/update as I was driving. I'll have to try it a few more times.

Ok so this has happened every night I have had the Captivate (3 nights), I go to bed at night and in the morning where my signal bar should be I have a circle with a slash through it (no network). When I go to bed I will have like 2-4 bars of service but something must happen and I lose all network functionality. I have to restart the phone which solves the problem but is a serious pain. This also happens sometimes randomly throughout the day.
Any ideas if this is a common problem with all Captivates or if it is a hardware or software issue?
I like this phone and if I can get it to work properly I love it more than my iphone but not getting service is a buzz kill and I will return it. (Bought it unsubsidized for $500 because I couldn't deal with my iphone anymore)
Note: I live in Tampa which generally has good AT&T service and have had no other problems with other phones
Did you turn off the phone and remove the sim card for a few minutes?? According to an at&t rep doing that solves network issues.
The problem I had today was that the phone showed full bars, but I couldn't send a text or make calls. I took the reps advice and it's fine for now.
Well I will give that a try tonight and see how it goes and post back tomorrow with my results. I really love everything. Else about this phone and would be a shame of I had to get rid of it because of silly antenna issues. Thanks for the advice!

Are you sure you don't have any power saving apps on that are turning off the radio after a few hours? Did it happen when it was stock with no programs installed? Might try and flash it back to stock and see if that solves the problem.
Otherwise you could always walk into an AT&T store and ask for another one and see if it still happens.
Well last night it did the same thing after removing the sim for about 10 minutes before bed.
And as far as knowing if it did this before I rooted it.....well...I owned the phone for maybe 10 minutes after unboxing it before I rooted it. So I have no idea if it is because it is rooted. I don't have any apps on it for power saving purposes and nothing should be killing the radio. Problem is that it isn't like airport mode is on...its completely out of service and the only way to get service back is to reboot. Turning the radios on and then off again while the phone is on won't work...it must be a reboot.
I will probably end up returning it and trying one more Captivate before I look else where for a new phone. But after seeing this screen it would be hard to look at any other phone twice.
iphone4 would be a good screen alternative
ur antenna issue is unique and a new phone will probably fix it. id get that sim replaced too.
The new iPhone would be ok...but I can't go back to an iPhone. I have had 4 of them (2 first gens) and I am so bored of them. And I know people rave about the iPhones new screen but side by side with this phone I would take the extra screen real estate anyway.
And I did consider getting a new sim card too. I think I will wait until towards the end of my 30 day return policy and trade in for a new one.
Thanks for all the help guys

I've had mine since July 18th and had never have this happen...till this morning. When I pulled it off charger I noticed the signal meter what a circle with a slash. Well, I dont get great reception in my apartment so it didnt phase me until I was on my way to work and still didnt have a signal. So, I turned it off and back on and then it had a signal. So I dont know what was up with that. I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow to see if its something thats going to happen regularly.
Hmmm...so I'm not the only one having this problem. Yeah I don't get superb service in my apartment but I have also never really had any other network problems with other phones.
Wonder if there is something that kills the network if you don't have a decent signal for a certain period of time. I just wish it wasn't everyday. On the brightside nobody will wake me up with emails or texts or calls.

Alright, I got one of the very first Evo Shift's directly off the production line and the battery and signal is absolutely horrible. I think it's constant roaming and switching from 1x to evdo that is causing the battery to drain extremely fast. The phone will not stay in 1 state for 5 minutes, it is either going to and from evdo to 1x or going in and out of roaming. I've had a hero and an evo that haven't had much problem staying in evdo and not roaming in the exact same area I'm using the shift in. So I'm trying to trace down if it is a hardware issue. If a few members don't mind posting some information for me I would greatly appreciate it. The information I need is below:

Settings>About Phone>Hardware Information>Hardware Version:0002
Settings>About Phone>Software Information>Baseband Version:1.07.00.1129
Settings>About Phone>Software Information>PRI Version:1.16_0003
Settings>About Phone>Software Information>PRL Version:60676
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The PRL is an earlier version in my hero so I'm going to pull the PRL off of it and load it into the Shift and see what happens. And yes I have updated the profiles, PRL, and firmware. I've tried different ROMs, and tried bone stock.
Thanks for anyone that can help.
You've had it for over 2 months with this problem and you haven't taken it back to Sprint yet?
^ Shift Faced
you dont think this has anything to do with the fact that over the last month they have been doing alot of tower work. a better way to do this would be to figure out exactly where you are moving to 1X areas, dial *2 on your cellular device, and have customer care open a network ticket. the areas i jump to 1X, i usually jump to 1X in that same location every time. such as my living room. i jump to 1X in my living room and back all the time.
but regardless

My signal is pretty consistent. I would have taken the phone back if I had the issue for more than a couple days. The phone is still under factory warrenty, you may want to consider getting a nre one.
Thank you newkidd, seems you have a newer hardware and PRI then me.
As for the others asking why I haven't taken it back. I bought it from an individual, because it's an engineering unit. Had all the DEV Tools and HTC Confidential on it, thats why I bought it. So I imagine it could be a hardware issue seeing as it was manufactured as a dev unit. And if thats the case, I'll just use it to develop/test on and buy a new one because I like the phone.
i researched into this issue of reception loss and found that this is because of the placement of the antenna on the phone. Most antennas are at the top of phones. Why you ask? because your hand is not up there to block the signal. The shift has the antenna at the base of the phone. That is the only major flaw i see to the phone. I was able to fix this issue by using the super power app in the market place and making my band 3g only and getting a signal booster for 2 dollars. The signal booster looks kinda like a sticker with a gold pattern running through it. I suggest you try the super power app and then see what happens.

Unfortunately, that theory may be true. But it doesn't apply to my case. Why? Because I can put the phone on speaker phone, walk 5-10 feet away and the call will still be clear for a minute, then become choppy. It has even dropped a call, when I wasn't even near the phone. So, I think that should disprove that it would be me blocking the antenna as an issue. And like I said I've previously used a Touch Diamond, Hero, and Evo without many signal issues.

sounds like an issue with the production unit. if you can get another - just do it and save yourself the headaches of feeling like you're on AT&T.
I work in a midtown Manhattan hi-rise near Rockefeller Center and get full signal bars on any phone in and around the office.
The problem is I get terrible performance. Voice calls are garbled and drop, and sometimes callers go straight to voice mail. E-mail, data and web work sporadically and load slowly if at all. The phone will actually get hot just sitting on the desk as if its CPU or transmitter is locked at 100%, and the battery drains quickly.
It's the same whether it's an iPhone, Android or Symbian smart phone or just simple dumb phone, and other people in my office have the same issues. I even notice the same kinds of things happening out on the street up to maybe a block away, but it seems to be at its worst when I'm in the building. But two blocks away, walking through Times Square or other busy places, everything is OK.
Any idea what could be going on and if there's any way to get around it? This is on AT&T.
Change baseband?
I think it's the fault of AT & T
AT&T is a terrible company
+1 on the AT&T being crap
I tried changing baseband but it didn't help, plus like I said it happens on all different kinds of phones. I've also tried manually switching from 850MHz over to 1900MHz band but that didn't help.
Updating my kernel might have actually helped a bit. It's hard to tell though, because the problem comes and goes.
I'm wondering if the signals are too strong and overloading the phone. Or maybe I'm exactly halfway between two strong towers in this building and they're interfering with each other, is that plausible? This is in the heart of NYC after all, AT&T must have a lot of towers in a very concentrated area around here.

I had a similar problem in my area once, it was rectified by the Network Provider.
Its due the GSM inter cell inheritence. Are you located very near to a Mobile Antenna tower.
It would be worth checking your own office building terrace for same

Heres how you fix the issue. I had a friend with the same issue. 1. open the window of your skyrise 2. take phone are throw it out the window 3. take elevator down to lower level. 4. Find nearest Verizon or Tmobile or sprint store and port your number. 5. take new phone from new network to your skyrise. 6. Congrats your problem has been solved. ANYONE WHO HAS AT&T NEEDS TO GIVE THEM THE FINGER AND MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER.
Thanks but if I wanted to hear people say AT&T sucks I would have posted this to Yahoo or something. I get a much better rate with AT&T through my company's FAN account, and I'd rather not pay double to another carrier if this is a technical issue that can be addressed.
For now I can use wifi around the office and put up with the spotty voice coverage, but I was hoping I might find some helpful technical advice here since this is supposed to be a developers forum with presumably mature users.
rathore4u - I'll see if I can find someone at my provider's tech support who understands the GSM inter cell inheritence issue you suggested. Thanks.
I'm temporary assigned to Cheyenne, WY and just got my Charge since my DroidX bit the dust. Can't wait to get back to Orlando which is covered in LTE but in the meantime I'm stuck on 3G.
My issue is that my data icon keeps going to 3G with a little D underneath it which means i have no data feed and when I do something that requires data, like the market, it doesn't always kick back in right away, which causes some apps not to work.
Has anybody else experienced this issue or am I just on a crappy tower? I did upgrade to ED2 in hopes that that would fix it.

Same issue - different state
Mods sorry I double posted. Please take down my similar thread. Here is what I posted.
I have a Thunderbolt and really enjoy 95% of how it works - except of course the battery life. So in an effort to retain the function of the Thunderbolt and improve battery life I picked up a Droid Charge. The screen is FANTASTIC and it runs almost as fast as the Bolt.
Here comes the big BUT!! But the data connection falls off a lot and I have to do a reset to get the 3g data connection back. There are some of other smaller things but the big BUT makes the Charge unusable for me.
Anyone a quick fix to this issue?
I am surprised this issue hasn't been reported more widely.
Experience tells me that Sammy ROM fixes are sssllloooww to come along.
So unless there is something I am missing - back goes the Sammy.
Also another quick question - anyone get Skype to work?
Thanks
I am having a bunch of connection issues as well. It seems like the 3g connection is spotty and handing off from 4g to 3g is worse. To make matters worse, if I am transferring anything when the issue occurs the transfer is toast and the app needs to be killed before it behaves again.
As for Skype, the one in the marker works (the non VZ one) so far. Haven't tested voice, but VZ ver wouldn't even run.
I have had the same problem with my thunderbolt so I returned it and got the charge and haven't had as much of a data problem and the battery life is so much better than the bolt.
No data issues here. But there also isn't LTE offered in the area so I guess I wouldn't be experiencing 4g/3g swapping ever...
In fact, I'm actually experiencing much better connectivity (wifi, 3g, gps, voice) than I was on my Fascinate.
No 3G here either but still erratic
Just to clarify, 4g is not available in my primary area. My phone has a good solid lock on a good solid signal then BOOM no more data.
Given what some of the others have said - it sounds hardware related.
Probable best to just take it back.
Yup, shoddy 3G
I'm having issues with sporadic 3G connectivity as well. Previously, I owned a Droid Eris and never had any issues with 3G in my area leading me to believe it's a problem with the Charge. I don't live in a 4G area so there is no interference there. I'll be mid-app and boom, it drops for about 2 minutes or until I toggle the data switch off/on.
Glad I'm not the only one, but still very annoying.
Aside from my few hardware/design complaints of the Charge, THIS issue is by far the worst that directly affects the user experience.
Samsung, are you reading this thread? Please help us!
I'm having the same issue. I was about to call verizon to make sure there were no outages. Places I normally have no issue maintaining 3g coverage I'm dropping down to 1X.
i had the same problem, i went to verizon and they reactivated my phone and now my phone works great with no problems. go to verizon and tell them to reactivate your phone, they may also give u a new sim card too.
Went to Verizon
Yep - went to Verizon also. Left the Charge there. We'll see where it goes but for now too many negatives. As I said earlier, I really like the Sammy screens started with the Fascinate. I just don't feel like waiting around for the slow train that Sammy/Verizon always seem to be on for fixes. Hopefully I am wrong soon but for now I am right.

It's a network and/or modem firmware issue - the Thunderbolt is plagued with the EXACT same problems.

OT F.E. Warren? My Cousin was stationed there, he was a guard at the Minuteman III ICBM Silo's and Launch Facilities, are you on the base or at the Missile's? I hope the deployment goes well! OT
Back on Topic, I noticed that little D underneath the 3G today and thought "what the?" lol. It was only there for a few seconds, so I dismissed it, I'll keep a watch on it though and report back any data issues.
I'm on base thank Jebus, I work behind a desk in the Communications SQ. As for the D, I went into vzw and they say claim it's normal. Personally I think it has something to do with the bad infrastructure we have in Wyoming, causing major power drain issues on my phone.

My wife's droid charge is having very bad issues with the 3g dropping and never coming back. Were in el paso, TX.
Same issue here in Orlando. 4G to 3G drops data...very annoying....wife is ready to return for iPhone4. Help please! Don't want fruit in house.
Having the same problem in Alabama, don't have 3G yet and yet I get the D and then 1X and it completely drops out. Last night I lost data completely and wouldn't come back up even after I rebooted the phone. I wasn't sure if this was due to the battery being about < 5% (I was trying to kill it) or what. About to boot my phone back up and see how it does. I had just switched WiFi off in my apt. and never got the 3G data stream.
I have it set to CDMA only since there is no 4G in my area right now, don't know if that really helps or hurts the situation though.
I actually thought the D meant that something about the stream being dormant because I do get it a lot of times but when I refresh facebook or something, 3G immediately comes back up.

How is your data doing lately, any better?
It's not getting any better but I talked to tech support and they said it's a known issue. Guess there'll be an ED3 soon.

I hope so. I would really like to keep the Droid Charge.
I can't seem to find a straight answer on Google for this. My phone's wifi is randomly disconnecting from my home network. I'll connect it, 3 hours later it's on 4G. I go to my "Wireless and Network Settings" and Wifi is enabled, as soon as I go to "Wi-Fi Settings" it reconnects to my network. It's just a hassle. Also, my speaker will randomly sound like utter ****. As if the treble was boosted 50db. Sometimes during the middle of my phone ringing. It goes from my normal ring tone "deedle deedle doo" to "BLEEDLEBLEEDLEBLOOD." Now, both of these issues are intermittent so I would have no real way of showing a rep in person unless it was coincidentally. Also, I have a slight dent on two corners of my phone, but both of these issues occurred before the cosmetic damage. How would I go about getting ATT to replace my phone? I've heard it's free, then I read the policy on my $8/mo insurance and it said $120 or something, idk.
I think your best bet is to call AT&T and see what they say. If you're within 30 days of purchase just take it to where ever you bought it. If not, they you should go though AT&T.
I am not within the 30 days.
As for your wifi problem, I believe you have the "Night time battery saver" which at night hours (or so) it will turn off the wifi when the phone is not being used, and as soon as you unlock the screen the wifi will turn on automatically.
Hello
I work for at&t. I can tell you this any phone you buy from Att ( cept the iPhone) has a one year warranty. It doesn't matter how many scratches your phone may have really. As long as your screen isn't cracked and you haven't spilled liquid on it Att will replace it.
Now if youve had the phone for more than 30 days. You can't return it to the store. You have to get a warranty exchange via customer service over the phone. So dial 611. Tell them your phone won't connect to wifi, they will ask you to format the phone tell them you already have, and in 2 to 3 days you'll have a shiny new atrix 2.
Hope that helps.

Sorry left something out. Do not do an insurance claim. Just do the warranty exchange. Insurance is really only meant for if you broke your phone or lost it.

I talked to ATT warranty services today. They tried telling me that both issues were caused by a degrading cell tower 25 miles from my location. What does that have to do with my phone not being able to hold Wifi and my speaker sounding gargly? And my phone works fine on the mobile network. She said she would send my phone an OTA update and firmware update and I'd get a call Monday. Coincidentally that same day they said this cell tower would be fixed. Haven't gotten it any updates. And no I'm not on night time battery saver. It happens during the day as well, periodically.

Have I tried what?
The first two weeks I had this phone there were no problems. I have a 360 and 3 iPhones connected to this router as well with no issues.
Well, then you should exchange your phone.
There is a post somewhere here that says A2 is not compatible with 5ghz or something like that. Try using Wifi Analyzer and figure out if your neighbor's router is running on the same channel as your router. Crowded channels = drop. I'm also having problem with Auto Connect feature, but it connects after 10 mins of being in the house. Once I'm connected though I never get a dropped Wifi. It would help if you post the manufacturer and model number of your router.
About the speakers yeah A2 is not built for music enthusiast. My speakers mumbles when i put someone on speaker at full volume lol. I think reviews of the A2 mention something about the speakers not on par with the A1.
After a couple weeks without much trouble, my connection to my home wifi started getting really hit or miss. Tons of disconnects, Atrix wifi antenna just turning itself off, etc. finally tonight I dusted off an old wifi router I had taken back from my parents and hooked it into my Live Wire network (power line networking) on the other side of the house from my existing router. Haven't had a drop in a while now. First router might be hickey, or dying, or the Atrix just wasn't handling a weak signal well.

I had this issue with mine and exchanged within the 30 days. I generally add in that it's rebooting often even after a factory reset. That usually makes the exchange foolproof.

That's my question, since I'm passed the 30 days, is it free? Because with Sprint even when I paid insurance like I am now it was ~$100 to replace a smartphone.

Haven't had a drop in a while now. First router might be hickey, or dying, or the Atrix just wasn't handling a weak signal well.

My router is actually brand new. We're in the employee testing for Cox Communication's new Docsis 3.0 routers, and again, it worked fine for about 2 weeks with this same router.

I had this issue with mine and exchanged within the 30 days. I generally add in that it's rebooting often even after a factory reset. That usually makes the exchange foolproof.

Cool, I'll try throwing that in there as well!
have you tried going to the at&t store to show them what is wrong with your phone so you don't have to explain everything over the phone. They took my phone before and exchanged right at the store ^_^
Try to boost your wifi, check this out http://www.labnol.org/internet/extend-wifi-wireless-network-range/13534/ not a detailed explaination but i hope that helps.
To test your wifi - try to stay within 6 feet range with out any blockage to see if you will get disconnected - if you get disconnected then go to att store and replace ^_^
Ok again. Its free to do a warranty exchange. you have a year to do it. Try calling customer service again. I know it may sound strange but give them less information next time. I wouldn't mention anything about garbled call quality or anything like that, because they are trained to automatically assume there is an issue with either your SIM or a tower nearby.
Next time you call only mention that your phone won't connect to wifi and you've already done a hard reset. Explain that you want a warranty replacement. Like I said it may be backward but the less information you give the better so essentially they can't create a situation where they will tell you its a network issue and not your device (because it sounds like your phone to me.)
The only time you're charged for a replacement phone is when its an insurance issue which is another matter entirely. Like I said in post before as long as your screen isn't cracked and your liquid indicator isn't red ( the little square sticker under your battery it should still be white.) Then Att will replace the phone free of charge.

The only thing is he's mentioned that he's had this particular phone for more than 30. In store we don't have the ability to exchange a phone outside of 30 days (unless the store also happens to have a warranty device center connected to it which is rare.) So most likely he has to have it exchanged over the phone via CS.

Yea, I figured as much about the less is more theory. They're suppose to call me in a few hours, if they don't I'll call them and use this method. I appreciate all the help. No screen cracks and the water damage indicator is white. I should be good!
And to clarify, the insurance covers it in cases where the screen is cracked, water damage, lost/stolen, etc? Basically anything that would be my fault.
Also, physically, how does the exchange work?
