High mA=low battery - Verizon Droid Charge

I think I've figured out what's killing my battery and wanted to post this for others. I've tried several roms and multiple batteries, but kept losing 14% or more per hour.
I downloaded Battery Widget Manager from the market to take a look at the mA consumption over time. Here's what I noticed, my phone is/was consuming too much power even when idle. With the screen off and 4g on, the mA rating was regularly in the 350-475 range. My friend has a Charge and I downloaded the same widget on his phone, in the same environment, and his idle mA was between 35 and 150! He's easily getting 18 hours out of his phone, and I'm lucky to get 7.
So here's the strange part, I downloaded a new rom and the pbj kernel, and for the first day, my mA always stayed between 35 and 150 when the phone was idle. Accordingly, I got amazing battery life of around 18 hours with 4g on.
This morning, however, my phone won't go below 450 mA in an idle state, despite being in the same environment. I've restarted and even turned off mobile networks. My battery is dying at about 16% an hour.
I'd like to see if others are having the same problem with their phones. To test this, download the battery monitor widget and track the mA usage using the log feature.
Curious if someone can diagnose why my phone suddenly won't go below the 450 mA mark.

I would make a backup and do a factory reset/ data wipe. Don't install any apps and see if the mA comes down. If you are still seeing high mA either reflash rome and kernel, or flash one of the stock roms. If it is still high, take it back and ask for a new one.
If the factory reset corrects the problem, start adding apps back one at a time to see which ones are contributing to your high drain.
Just what I would do, maybe someone else has a better idea.

What's strange is I've already been on several different ROMS, including stock. When I first flashed this ROM about 2 days ago, the mA was completely normal, but today, it has spiked again and consistently stays too high. I've tried a different battery, killed every single app running, but to no avail.
Why does each ROM start off fine and then have a problem a day or two later? Conversely, if the hardware is the real problem, why doesn't the current spike ALWAYS happen?
I would've guessed an app is affecting it, just like you said, but I used a task killer to turn them all off, and the mA stayed too high. Additionally, I used Spare Parts to see what was eating CPU and Network and nothing was standing out. Isn't that odd?
I bought the phone on Ebay, would I still be able to bring it back to a Verzion store and get a replacement since I'm not the first owner. I'm not convinced there's something wrong with the phone.

What does your phone say is actually using most of your battery? (Settings->About Phone->Battery Use)
And what's your "Time without signal?" (In Battery Use, hit "Cell standby")
Also, task killers don't work on Froyo or above like they did on Eclair -- tasks just restart themselves in the background automatically if they're closed now. The only way to permanently stop something from backgrounding is to uninstall it.

Display is the biggest user of battery @ 93%
Time without signal isn't available because I just unplugged my phone...
But even after just restarting I've dropped 7% of my battery in 10 minutes.

I experienced an identical situation until today. Guess what fixed it? Removing Battery Monitor Widget! Seriously. Check CPU Spy. You'll see it never goes into deep sleep if you let Battery Monitor Widget run in the background or put its widget on your screen. Deleted the widget and CPU Spy immediately started logging deep sleep time. You can still use the monitor to check up on live stats, just don't let it run in the background or install the widget.

I've been running the phone with Battery Monitor Widget for two days without any issue. Don't think that's the problem or I'd have experienced this immediately after installing it.

Also, I understand how to delete the widget, but how do you ensure it's not running the background?

I tested this twice and both times I experienced a big battery drain after installing battery monitor widget.......went away once I uninstalled it

In the settings menu for battery monitor widget, ensure "monitoring without widget" is not checked. Then, when you are done with the app, use the back button to exit. It will tell you to press back again to stop monitoring. If it doesn't say this, it keeps running in the background.
You wouldn't know it is preventing deep sleep BTW unless you check it with CPU Spy (available in the market). I don't know if you are familiar with it, but it shows what percentage of time the CPU is spening at each speed. Deep sleep is the lowest state. If this state isn't used, the only symptom will be the battery drain.
You can easily confirm the issue by checking CPU spy with and without battery monitor widget running. Reset CPU Spy timers before each test. Deep sleep time should be logged after you lock your device for a minute or so.

I am have the same problem. I will see one day that will be great, and the next day I will have around 7 hours. I am running debloated EE4, but I have not tried to calibrate te batteries either.

So indeed, it was the battery monitor widget running in the background that was eating battery. But now that I've fixed that, there's something else eating my battery. In Spare Parts, it says that Dialer is the largest user of my network. I've talked on the phone for a grand total of 15 minutes today, so why is dialer eating up so much data? Of course, the huge data consumption is draining my battery quickly. Any suggestions?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App

Yes, my phone says that too, and it always has. My battery life is fantastic, so that is clearly not an issue for me. I really believe that your issue lies elsewhere.

But how can this make any sense? Why would Dialer be using mass amounts of data? Logically, if it's consuming data when I'm not making calls then it's draining power to use this data.
Can anyone else explain the Dialer is doing this?

Just how much data does it say it is using? Just because its at the top of the list doesn't necessarily mean it's consuming a large amount of data.

My phone has been unplugged for 5 hours and I've made zero calls, but dialer states I've received 10 mb of data.
In comparison, the next highest network usage belongs to Touchdown. I've received almost 40 emails and it's only used 1 mb. How can dialer NOT be a problem?

I am in the same situation. My dialer is also using the most network resources. I use Go Dialer. I wonder if that could be the cause. I'll delete it and see if it makes a difference.

Yes, my phone did that when it was stock, as well as now that it is rooted. It is normal, and nothing to worry about. I will repeat again: you are barking up the wrong tree; the dialer data usage is not the cause of your bad battery life. However, if you'd like to continue trying to figure out this non-issue, be my guest.

My drainage is deep sleep its 50% any fixes?
Edit:
I take that back it just jumped to 60%.

That sounds like what I have right now.
My phone is rooted and I have it unplugged since 9AM. It is now 3PM and down to 50%. This is what I did:
Bluetooth Headphone + music for about 1hr
Downloading apps + updating + reinstalling + backups + uploading for about 30 min
Texting + a few emails + fruit ninja + angry birds + GBA emulator for about 30 min
I'd save more battery if it wasn't for the data+CPU intensive activities.
Goto the verizon store and talk to the manager. Tell him to push the hybrid prl to your phone. Mine is 13006 & battery is at 80% (off charge 6am) at 3:34pm. Looks like a major fix for me and the wife's thunderbolt.

I spoke. With corporate about that, tier 2. They said prl updates automatically on boot and the is no way to push a specific version. They also said prl is for voice roaming in non VZW covered areas and isn't related to the 4g radio, as only VZW towers support LTE.

What does your usage look like? If I just open up my phone for emails and text (very light usage), I lose about 10% every 4 hours or so. Also I think you can edit your tower preferences by dialing " ##778# " . I'm not sure if it's the same but sounds quite similar.

The reps on the phone are full of it! I have been on the new prl and it doesn't change when I reboot or bsttery pull. Actually yeah that does sound about normal. There are of course alot of variables when it comes to battery life. What you actually use and leave running, how much and how often you use it and of course how strong a signal you might have or not have.
I get better battery life than that however there are a number of things I remove from my phone that I do not use and I shut just about all syncing off. Naturally that will make a difference.
I see so much about battery life on our phones and what confuses me is what do people expect? Really these smartphones are just about like walking around with a laptop in your pocket. How much time of continuous use can one expect to get out of that? I know most laptops you would get maybe a few hours of use on the standard batteries after a few months of use. I guess thinking of it like that are we really doing that bad?
Sure I'd love to see a battery that will last 2 days and I can use my phone constantly but at least at this point and time that simply not going to happen.
I know you are not complaining here but I just wanted to vent a little bit lol

you have to have something running constantly on that phone. might want to pick up a app in the market and check what is running that thing like that. system monitor is one app and there are others as well. either that or you just have a bad battery but not likely

Okay, I know I'm not from the TB side as I have an Evo, but one thing to keep in mind is that if you leave 3g/4g turned on, it constantly tries to find a superior signal. Use wifi where available. Also, turn 3g and 4g off when you don't need them, and don't leave stuff set to sync on its own. Other things that can be done to improve battery life are lowering your screen brightness and adjusting the screen timeout/sleep interval. The lower each of these are set, the more battery you will save. If your screen is always on, it's constantly drawing battery, obviously. Also, in my experience, the HTC charging kernels have a tendency to be a bit finicky when it comes to charging 90-100%. Sure, your phone may show 100% charged, but if you pull off the charger and it drops 3-8% in the course of 5 minutes, it clearly wasn't 100% charged to begin with.
However, if you meant to say that you were following these guidelines and still having this issue, I would say you very well may have a defective/weak battery.
root your phone and download imoseyons leankernel.
i can get over 24 hours of battery time pretty easily as long as i'm not using it heavily, and that's with an overclocked cpu to 1.4 ghz.
i have been turning APN off via extended controls and my battery life has gone to bearable to good! I am really happy about it b/c the widget works perfectly and turns on and off in virtually seconds, and completely turns off all radios other than the one for calls and texts.
So until I have root and am able to adjust the battery life in that way this is working great.
here's mine on das bamf 1.2 and ziggy's april 6th kernel at 1497/368 on smartass governor w/ 2750 battery...mediaserver was me streaming mecanto over 3g for 4-5 hours, also used pandora over 3g, but only for an hour or so...no wifi used in the last day..radio set to cdma auto so it doesnt look for 4g.
brightness and sync on whatever I want, I keep beautiful widgets at 15 minute update, not sure anything else syncs...mail seems to sync when I switch to the screen with the mail widget or whenever I open the mail or gmail app..

Yea, I just posted on another board that I will not be able to stay with this phone. Im going to have to shell out 600-700 for an off-contract Bionic. My phone was 100% at 7AM this morning.. After sitting in the car all day at work, 10 hours later, it's down to 75%. I figure that's not bad.
Well in the 4 hours since Ive been off work, Ive made ONE 30min phone call and sent 20 texts. The phone is dead. Didnt do any surfing. One call, twenty texts.
This is unacceptable.
EDIT: Yes, I checked the partial wake usage and nothing is running in the background. I have nothing syncing either. There's only like 5 things in the battery info screen.. Phone call, Display, Phone Standby, Cell Idle, Android System, and Android OS. The single 30 minute voice call accounts for 47%, 30 minutes of Display is 21%, and the idle and standby are the rest.
ive called verizon about the hybrid prl they just lol its an auto update they cant just push it to your phone maybe your in a 4g lte area but im not

Skyrocket Battery Life? HORRIBLE

So I've had this phone for a week now. Its a nice upgrade from my infuse 4g. But the battery life is killing me. I've tried every Tom.available specifically for the skyrocket and even the one kernel in the dev section. My brightness is 15% and I use juice defender set to every 30 min. I listen to Pandora for an hour and it drops 20%. Yesterday it was dead in 6 hours. Its to the point where I'm seriously considering going back to my infuse. Has anyone else had issues?

Currently have juice defender, 0.2 kernel (didnt update and probably wont for now), and a few apps frozen by Titanium Backup. If I hardly touch the phone, it would last 41 hours. With medium usage, (Wifi, web browse, using poweramp for some time, calls, emails, etc) It would easily last my entire day.
What apps did you freeze?

I have JuiceDefender Ultimate set to balanced, I have only the clock widget running, I have GPS running continuously, (I use Wifi occassionally), I have screen set to about 50% and with very normal usage, the battery is at about 20-25%. I have a good number of email accounts and they are polled constantly, notifications are normal (phone settings), I use the Market app and the browser a number of times a day and I hear the occasional podcast. By the way, listening a podcast for about 1 hour (I use BeyondPod and earphones) results in minimal battery usage (about 2% for an hour or so).
So, I have to say that I am quite happy with battery life.
I know what you mean.
I had a stock skyrocket running in a weak LTE market in New Orleans and it would last like 8 hrs then I rooted and frooze all the bloat ware and de-installed a lot of app that were always using the web. I manually set my screen brightness. And changed the launcher to go launcher. Getting 18-20 hrs lots of moderate usage lte and all.
Yea something is wrong. I don't even use juice defender yet my phone last all day wit like 20% when I get home at 9. I use it to talk at least 3-4 and moderate usage for internet and am in wifi a lot. Youtube umm often..Defective maybe??

How do you turn off LTE?
look in settings, about phone, battery and see what is using all your battery. Battery life is very good on the stock ROM, rooted or not. You might also want to install Traffic Monitor and set it up for your billing cycle properly. Then watch for a few days to see what apps are using data. I do not recommend turning off LTE.
BTW there is already a very good Freeze list of Apps...

I was also having very low battery times on my SR to the point it was draining about 5% every half hour. I checked everything and everything was set properly. Yesterday was ready to pack it up to exchange it and thought I try restoring the phone. After restoring it, I now get excellent battery life. I'm getting about 1% battery drop every hour. Today tested throughout the day and listened to some music, some web browsing, a few FB posting, a call for 20 minutes and have 95% battery life left.

I've had pretty bad battery life here in the DC area (LTE is available here). It'll last about 6-7 hours with very mild use. Maybe I should restore it?
What did you do @ElCamino to reset it? Maybe I'll try that too (though I'll hate having to set it back up again).
Also, I turned juice defender back on today, and I've noticed that it seems to be keeping the device "Awake" even when the screen is off. I have it on "balanced." Can anyone give me a little advice on setting it up correctly. I can't seem to get it to let me open more granular settings.
So I am starting to wonder if there are some defective units being shipped. My wife and I both have a Skyrocket. Mine is great, been using it for 13.5 hours today on medium usage. I currently have 63% battery life left. I am completely stock, no juice defender or any other like programs. I even had No-LED installed and used my flashlight app for about 5 solid minutes.
My wife on the other hand has the exact same setup as I do. She complains she barely gets through half a day with medium usage. I charged up her phone earlier today. 7 hours ago I took it off the charger. She has used it with very light usage in that time and it is down to 60% already. When I say light usage I mean sitting on the table for at least 6.5 of those hours. Often she charges it up while watching TV at night. Takes it off the charger when she goes to bed and by morning the batter is at least half drained.

@jslanger I went to settings>privacy> and choose Factory Reset. Yes i know that you have to reinstall and setup the phone, but I am glad I did. Battery life has been great. I'm not in a LTE area but like mentioned battery was draining quick before.
Also I wouldn't recommend you use a back to restore, just in case that something with OS setup from Samsung causing this.

look in settings, about phone, battery and see what is using all your battery. Battery life is very good on the stock ROM, rooted or not. You might also want to install Traffic Monitor and set it up for your billing cycle properly. Then watch for a few days to see what apps are using data. I do not recommend turning off LTE.
BTW there is already a very good Freeze list of Apps...

Anyway you could link to the list and also let me know what the app is that does the freezing. Mine is rooted but i'm kinda new to this.

Search for Titanium Backup in the Android Market. You will have to check and see if it requires the pro version to freeze apps.

just to help you guys possibly, i moved some APPS to my SD card last night, at work i noticed mediaserver was second in my battery list and my phone was draining faster than normal
after moving the apps back to the phones internal, the drain seemed to stop, i also wiped the sd card just to be safe as i usually stream pandora anyways , but just another option to look out for
Weird....
So I've been closely following my battery life because it kind of sucks.
I had great battery life at home while on wifi over the weekend...about 18 hours no problem. I recharged it today at work, and was not getting great life during the day while on LTE/4G
Got home, turned on wifi, and the battery drain completely leveled out. I also noticed that while on cellular, the "Awake" bar is solid. As soon as I'm on wifi, it was able to not be continuously awake.
Not sure if anyone can comment on the reasons that this would be, but usually its the OPPOSITE. I really dunno why this would be.
Any help is appreciated!
Here is my battery life. Rooted and haven't froze any of the apps yet.

[POLL] Did this trick significantly improve your battery life?

So after disabling Google Services under location settings, I noticed my battery lasting much longer. It felt like it wasn't burning through battery as fast when using the phone and especially when the phone was just on standby. The phone feels more efficient and I got almost 32 hours of battery life. This was not all standby, I would call it moderate use with a lot of texting, tinkering, even Wifi tethering for half an hour.
Try it and let us know. Screenshot as evidence.

As a quick background for those who don't know, disabling that option means that the device will no longer use wifi hotspots as a location mechanism. It shouldn't affect outdoor location accuracy under normal circumstances. It may affect time-to-fix or accuracy in areas with a high density of tall buildings and skyscrapers. Most won't notice a difference in location performance, but it's important to be aware of what the changes are doing.
I tried it but lost my Google contacts and when I defrosted it I had to re-sign into Google.

Defrosted? Did you freeze it? You just have to go under settings and disable it.

Yeah... From personal experience, I wouldn't recommend freezing any system apps via Titanium. Basically anything that's in red font. It never turns out good lol.
I think the main reason this drains battery while wifi is off is that it constantly reports your location. Turn it off and back on and read the message.
Just want to let you guys know that I have 2 Charges, one belonged to my daughter and it last for days without any mod(stock) and she installed a lot of apps on it. Mine is the unlucky one, if I used it straight without taking any breaks in between(navigating through contatcts for editing/updating/delete and a 15min phone call), a full charge battery lasted 3hrs and 20min. I have tried every combinations of Mods(V6,smoothness,Thunderbold etc.), ROMs (tweakstock,eclipes,stock-deodex) and kernel(imomosey4.0, Imnuts PBJT 1115,013012) and NO help. I think this has a "silicon" issue. So I give this google service a try to see if it's help. I disabled google service through settings and left the phone over night.(from 2am-7am), I checked at 7am and battery showed 97%(3% drops for 5hrs). I then used the phone constantly and it drained to zero in about 3hrs20min. So in sleep mode, it's not bad, but not help in working mode, for my phone that is. I'm going to swap out this phone for another one with Verizon.

That's just a waste of battery Also it probably keeps some service running killing the battery as well
Just uncheck the ticker for this experiment guys, also it takes a battery cycle to notice the change

For a full battery cycle, should we let the battery drain completely, and then get to full charge? Or can we just let it get down to 10-15%, and then charge it?
Thanks for the idea. Timing is great, since my Charge is suddenly running through the battery in 4-6 hours, where it used to go 8-10 or more.
So i turned this off and i couldn't get a location at all. Turned it back on and location came back. I had full service.

Yes, the general cell tower based location will not work. However the real GPS lock will work, it just takes a long time on this phone.
Try the app Speedview. I turn that on, it locks in in about 5-10 seconds. I have it running in the background (run in background setting) then open Maps. Get instant location because the GPS already has a lock

I think is Verizon's version of Google Services. It must be on if you try to use VZ navigator that I know. Also when I tried unchecking it, it took a bit longer to get a lock.
Not really. I've never noticed any difference with it on or with it off (I'm referring to standalone GPS NOT Google services!)

Seriously? You don't think verizon knows where your phone is? Just having it on makes it possible for them to track it.
Also I have unchecked them with no change. Those being checked won't effect your battery unless you have some app that is accessing your location in the background. In which case it would be helpful to have them checked, as it would find a location quicker.

I'm not "that" naive mate...I know they know my whereabouts anyway. I was just stating the point that I have never messed with that check box.
Also.....battery usage will always vary depending on a million variables...list too long to write it down.
It has been the most discussed topic on this site beside the usual "I HAZ BRICK NAO...JELP ME PLIS, I ROOTED AND NO POWAH!"
If anyone really wants to improve battery life...use on of these:
Mine still has some charge from back when I use to use it

sudden overnight battery drain

I know battery drain is a tough one, and I'm not looking for any easy answers. I had my atrix2 humming along nicely for several months doing very well with battery use draining 1-2%/hr while idle. If battery drain ever spiked after app updates, I could always get back to normal with a reboot. One day I rebooted and the battery drain didn't go away. The battery usage screen in GB gave me nothing useful (phone idle, bluetooth and cell standby are always tied for first place and no errant apps show up) so I opened Titanium backup and started freezing apps to try to nail it down.
Over the next few weeks I tried everything, but battery drain just increased to the point where it would bounce around between 5 and 10%/hr. Something was clearly wrong. I did a factory reset and that did nothing. I excluded all media folders from mediascan and even removed the SDcard and that did nothing. I even got a new SIM from AT&T.
Finally, I got a warranty replacement, and slowly reinstalled my apps via titanium backup, but the battery drain returned. I didn't have it completely bone stock for very long because I was convinced at this point that it was a hardware issue, so I don't know if it was draining like this out-of-the box. I figured the battery would need a couple cycles to settle in anyway.
One way I can get the drain to settle down is to turn on airplane mode, and then it does really well with about 1.5%/hr drain.
I'm wondering if this is something that either google or AT&T changed with their respective services that might make phones use more juice. Anyone else seen anything like this?
If, after rooting or more likely the case after flashing a new rom, you often have battery reporting errors, and re-calibrating the battery along with some steps I will outline for you below will ensure that your battery is getting a full charge, and the battery reporting accuracy is right on. I run my device in performance mode all the time, and with a CPU overclock of 1.25GHz and various tweaks, I have about a day an a half to a day and a quarter of full runtime from my battery. This is with moderate to heavy usage (calls, emailing, text, gaming, web browsing, etc.) so you should have no problems getting acceptable battery performance after following these steps:
1. Take the case off your device (one of the latter steps involves taking the battery out from the phone while it's plugged in. Make sure your case won't stand in the way.)
2. Install Battery Calibration app from the market
3. Plug in your device to charge while it's on, wait till it gets to a 100%
4. When the charge is 100%, open the BatteryCalibration app and lookup what the charge is in MV while at 100%. Write it down.
My Atrix 2 was showing ~3400MV while at 100%, which is definitely not the maximum capacity.
5. Discharge your device completely until it shuts off.
A good way of doing this quickly is by turning on wifi, and a video player.
6. Without turning on the phone plug it into a wall charger and let it get to 100%
7. When it's at 100%, without unplugging it from the wall charger, take off the battery cover, and take the battery out.
Your phone will "reboot" and show a Missing Battery icon.
8. Without unplugging the phone from the wall charger or turning it on, put the battery back in and wait until the phone recognizes the battery.
9. Your battery should now be recognized by the phone, and showing a charge % significantly lower than 100%.
Mine showed only 5%.
10. Let it sit there charging for 2-3 hours (or more).
My phone wouldn't charge past 10%, but yours might. The numbers don't matter much as the phone is definitely getting additional charge that could have been lost while flashing ROMs, etc.
11. After 2-3 hours (or more), turn the phone on while holding the volume down button and get into CWM.
Do not disconnect it from the charger still!
12. Wipe battery stats in CWM, reboot.
Do not disconnect it from the charger still!
13. When the phone turns on, go into Battery Calibration app again and look up your MV numbers -if you were like me, they should be significantly higher than before. After this whole process I had 4351MV at 100%, comparing to 3400MV before calibration.
Do not disconnect it from the charger still!
14. Before going to sleep - Install Watchdog Task Manager Lite from the market. Go into it's preferences, set CPU threshhold to 20%, check "Include phone processes", check "Monitor phone processes", check "Display all phone processes", set system CPU threshhold to 20% as well.
Do not disconnect it from the charger still!
15. Make sure your wifi and data connections are off. Now finally unplug the phone from the charger.
Go to bed, let your phone sleep too.
16. Success! Next morning check where your battery % is at and if you followed the instructions correctly / got lucky like me, your battery life should be 90% or more.
I went to bed with 98% and woke up to 94%. So, I consider this mission a success.

ive been waiting to write a new topic regarding battery drain since a while, but never got the time.
Apex_strider, I hope u can help me out.
Ive been having battery drain issues right fron the time ive bought the phone. never had more than 16hrs in an entire day after a full charge, and out of the 16 nine hours was when I was asleep.
ive been monitoring the battery drains from the inbuilt app and the main culprit is always mobile standby. never less than 30% n going as high as 39%. The 2nd culprit is almost always phone idle, which is a bummer. 20 to 30% of the entire charge.

(Mobile standby is the time when phone is on)
I had done the proper full drain n then the full charge cycle when I got the phone. got a new Sim card cause the moto service centre said so, still no help. That guy had suggested initially that there might be a problem with the motherboard, but later he suggested to get the battery changed, so I got a new battery. after that since vodafone uses a 32k Sim and since the problems I had while updating my phone, I got myself a new spare Docomo connection which is a 64k Sim(its written on the package)
now with the new non-vfne 64k Sim n fresh battery which ive been draining fully and charging fully. Theres been no change.
With Docomo
16hrs 45mins - Mobile Standy
12hrs 37 mins - Phone Idle
10hrs 20mins - Wifi
its 16hrs cos of late night charging the phone and after charging left the phone with wifi on.
Out of the 12hrs that ive got 8hrs 20min was when I wasnt using my phone at all! And this isnt just one day.. I use my phone mostly for surfing, IMs and occasional non-power consuming games. And as u can see theres not much of any power consuming apps from that list.
The whole problem comes down to either the radio hardware or my service providers (vfne n Docomo) 'service'.
My signal strength varies from 75db 19asu, 83DB 15asu and 91DB 11asu,n occasionally over that. And I vaguely remember vfne having the same numbers.
Now one thing ive noticed is that I dont always get all the 5bars of network and theres a lot of signal strength fluctuation even though the vodafone tower is right above my apartment.
Do u think it might be something to do with the fluctuating signal cause of which my phones radio has to constantly deal with finding a signal ? Or is my radio faulty ?
Btw when I was on vfne, my network selection was automatic and I used to get HSPA and now on Docomo ibe selected 2g, Edge.
to conserve battery, ive kept:
Battery mode to Maximum batt saver
Animations Off
Haptic feedback Off
Brightness is mostly on 10%
Use Wifi when m at home.
if its a radio issue dun think the batt calibration is gonna help me out.
any suggestions ??
PS: my phone is unrooted.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with this. Either his battery is bunk, or there's something causing the drain. Rooting and flashing a rom at less than STOCK ROM CPU SPEED is asinine. So, aside from him buying a brand new OEM battery, the best plan of attack is to hunt down the cause of the battery drain... and fix it.

@darkmixta - ive an AsiaRetail phone so dun think att roms gonna help, actually dun think any roms going to help if its a hardware problem.
@Apex_strider - 16% drain after 12mins of talktime is a lot acc to me.
I wouldve rooted right away if I didnt have any issues with the stock phone and tried all the batt calibration n setupcpu apps, ive read about a lot many options I had.
But then I wouldve voided my warranty and if it did turn out to be a hardware issue then I would be stuck with it.
Ive even decided to get an extended batt fron ebay. But that wont solve my problem. And the new battery that I got was an OEM from the moto service station.

anikadam,
You're right, my apologies. 16% IS a lot of battery consumption from just 12 minutes of call time. I believe this was my 2nd oversight in reading and paying notice in the forum. Perhaps I'll take a short hiatus to avoid such embarrassment due to the onset of more sleep deprivation.
If you do suspect it's a hardware issue, are you going to try and replace the device altogether? No amount of attention given to your issue is going go do much good if, in fact, it is hardware-related. Is a return still a possibility for you at this point?

Weird battery issue

For the past little while my battery has been draining very quickly. It turns out that my power button wasn't grounded and stopped working soon after the battery issues started. I got the power button replaced and ordered a new battery, but now the battery is acting even weirder and I'm not sure if it's a issue with the new battery or with my phone.
The battery will drain fairly slowly (six hours to go from 90% to 50%), but will then drop from 50% to 30% in a matter of minutes and then to 13% even quicker before the phone will shut down completely. I've tried wrong the battery stats but it doesn't seem to have helped.
I'm guessing that it's a problem with the new battery, but I was wondering if anyone had experienced any similar issues? I'm going to switch back to the old battery and see how long it lets as a test but I would like to figure this out soon. Thanks

Hi,
Maybe u can post ur battery stats to help us understand what ur using during the battery drain.
What ROM/kernel are u using?
Is the drainage during WiFi or data usage. If its data, how strong is ur signal?
There is so much that can be causing this so the more info, the better.
Oh, and is the new battery a knock-off? If so that can also be an issue.
Where did u buy it?
Thx

My battery stats from last night were mainly screen and maps. I turned off automatic updating in maps though. I can edit this post after I use my phone a bit.
I'm on stock everything but rooted.
I always leave WiFi on, but the battery has gone from 50 to 30 to dead when I wasn't connected to a network. My signal without WiFi is normally three to four bars, and WiFi is about the same.
The new battery is more than likely a knockoff. I ordered a $10 battery from eBay (my bad).
Sorry about not paying more info. I wasn't sure what else to post. Please let me know if there's anything else you need to know. Thanks

Well if you're stock(I assume you rooted but kept the same ROM) then maybe you can change kernels
or
Look for a ROM that has the stock feel but has tweaks that can save your battery life. There are a few out there.
But you'll get arguments that stock is not always the best ROM for great battery life.
Its a personal choice so look at the ROMs and pick one after you've read the thread to see similar issues/wants from it.
Good luck
If you are on Jellybean Stock then you should seriously consider using a custom ROM because Google hasn't yet released the perfect Jellybean like they released the perfect ICS in 4.0.4 update..
Secondly, you should try cyanogenmod based ROMs whichever have been great when talking about battery life (There are really awesome ROMs out there).
And follow the below mentioned steps and observe for a full 100-0% cycle drain times and get screenshots of battery stats with screentime and post here..
1. Turn the Screen Brightness to minimum; the tolerable value for you.
2. Remove any unwanted apps.
3. Keep WiFi switched off when not in use.
4. Set the multitask value by Going to Settings -> Developer options -> Background process limit -> At most 4 processes
5. Use minimum widgets and minimum home screens if possible
6. Uncheck the location services in settings. You can switch them ON when required very easily.
7. Clear Running Apps from Settings -> Apps -> RUNNING & also by long pressing Home button.
8. Clear cache at regular intervals and always use back button rather than using Home button
If above steps make a difference then it will become your style or else change the battery and get something like from OEM.

I took some of dark's advice, although I had already been doing a lot of that stuff. I'm not complaining about the battery life on the stock rom (I have already accepted that it's not the best), but rather the issue of having my battery drop from 50% to dead within 20 minutes, even without use (not at all normal for me). Does anyone know what could be causing that issue?

How about a screen shot of ur battery stats?
There could be an app or the OS hogging up ur battery.

My battery seems to be holding strong. I'm worried about what will happen when it hits 50% though.

edit: i'm sort of wondering if my phone is reading the battery correctly. it kind of seems like six hours is a lot of uptime just to get to 50%, so the rapid drop to zero might just be because the phone isn't correctly reporting the battery's charge.
edit #2: my phone got down to ~30% battery no problem before it shut off completely. upon plugging it in to get the phone turned on, the battery had dropped to 20% and then dropped to 17% with the screen off and the phone plugged in

Your battery seems to be good enough to withstand the usage. There is one thing you can still try;
Let the battery drain completely and let the phone get switched off.
1. Now plug in the charger and on the phone go to your recovery. Here I suppose you have the latest CWM recovery.
2. Go to Advanced -> Clear Battery Stats -> Confirm by scrolling. Then reboot the phone and avoid using it before it's charged completely.
3. Now let the battery charge 100% and only after that you unplug it and don't interrupt the charge cycle.
4. Observe the changes in discharge timings. And also paste a screenshot of Screen Usage time by tapping on Settings -> Battery -> Screen (The Time on details...)

I'll try that later. I thought you were supposed to reset battery stats when your battery was completely charged so that's how I did it the first time thanks
edit: i'm just about to reset the battery stats again. my phone decided to show 40% battery as I was walking home, but then shut off and shows 0% battery now that i'm home and have access to a charger. i'll let you know what happens once the phone is fully charged. additionally, my phone will say charged while plugged in when my battery monitor thing says that it's only at ~89%, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. thanks again
Everything seems to be going well today. I'm about 8.5 hours on battery now so I figure I'll let my phone charge a bit. Thanks again, dark. Hopefully this time it'll stick.

Every battery exhibits different discharge curves vs voltage. The os estimates battery level based on voltage. It is possible that the batteries discharge curve is just very flat throughout with a steep drop in voltage near the end which would produce the results you are experiencing. Wiping battery stats has no bearing on this issue, google cleared up what battery stats really does over a year ago. Best suggestion is to drain the battery fully, charge to 100% and repeat the process several times. This will help both the batteries discharge curve and the os's estimation based on voltage. If the problem persists, buy another battery (preferably not a knockoff) and test again. If you are still having problems after that, you may have a hardware issue with the phone. Does not seem to be a Rom issue, otherwise the drain would be happening constantly, not just after 50%.
