Skyrocket Battery Life? HORRIBLE - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So I've had this phone for a week now. Its a nice upgrade from my infuse 4g. But the battery life is killing me. I've tried every Tom.available specifically for the skyrocket and even the one kernel in the dev section. My brightness is 15% and I use juice defender set to every 30 min. I listen to Pandora for an hour and it drops 20%. Yesterday it was dead in 6 hours. Its to the point where I'm seriously considering going back to my infuse. Has anyone else had issues?

Currently have juice defender, 0.2 kernel (didnt update and probably wont for now), and a few apps frozen by Titanium Backup. If I hardly touch the phone, it would last 41 hours. With medium usage, (Wifi, web browse, using poweramp for some time, calls, emails, etc) It would easily last my entire day.

What apps did you freeze?

I have JuiceDefender Ultimate set to balanced, I have only the clock widget running, I have GPS running continuously, (I use Wifi occassionally), I have screen set to about 50% and with very normal usage, the battery is at about 20-25%. I have a good number of email accounts and they are polled constantly, notifications are normal (phone settings), I use the Market app and the browser a number of times a day and I hear the occasional podcast. By the way, listening a podcast for about 1 hour (I use BeyondPod and earphones) results in minimal battery usage (about 2% for an hour or so).
So, I have to say that I am quite happy with battery life.

I know what you mean.
I had a stock skyrocket running in a weak LTE market in New Orleans and it would last like 8 hrs then I rooted and frooze all the bloat ware and de-installed a lot of app that were always using the web. I manually set my screen brightness. And changed the launcher to go launcher. Getting 18-20 hrs lots of moderate usage lte and all.

Yea something is wrong. I don't even use juice defender yet my phone last all day wit like 20% when I get home at 9. I use it to talk at least 3-4 and moderate usage for internet and am in wifi a lot. Youtube umm often..Defective maybe??

Battery life is amazing for me with heavy usage. Just make sure when your not using lte to turn it off and use wifi as much as possible.

How do you turn off LTE?

look in settings, about phone, battery and see what is using all your battery. Battery life is very good on the stock ROM, rooted or not. You might also want to install Traffic Monitor and set it up for your billing cycle properly. Then watch for a few days to see what apps are using data. I do not recommend turning off LTE.
BTW there is already a very good Freeze list of Apps...

I was also having very low battery times on my SR to the point it was draining about 5% every half hour. I checked everything and everything was set properly. Yesterday was ready to pack it up to exchange it and thought I try restoring the phone. After restoring it, I now get excellent battery life. I'm getting about 1% battery drop every hour. Today tested throughout the day and listened to some music, some web browsing, a few FB posting, a call for 20 minutes and have 95% battery life left.

I've had pretty bad battery life here in the DC area (LTE is available here). It'll last about 6-7 hours with very mild use. Maybe I should restore it?
What did you do @ElCamino to reset it? Maybe I'll try that too (though I'll hate having to set it back up again).
Also, I turned juice defender back on today, and I've noticed that it seems to be keeping the device "Awake" even when the screen is off. I have it on "balanced." Can anyone give me a little advice on setting it up correctly. I can't seem to get it to let me open more granular settings.

So I am starting to wonder if there are some defective units being shipped. My wife and I both have a Skyrocket. Mine is great, been using it for 13.5 hours today on medium usage. I currently have 63% battery life left. I am completely stock, no juice defender or any other like programs. I even had No-LED installed and used my flashlight app for about 5 solid minutes.
My wife on the other hand has the exact same setup as I do. She complains she barely gets through half a day with medium usage. I charged up her phone earlier today. 7 hours ago I took it off the charger. She has used it with very light usage in that time and it is down to 60% already. When I say light usage I mean sitting on the table for at least 6.5 of those hours. Often she charges it up while watching TV at night. Takes it off the charger when she goes to bed and by morning the batter is at least half drained.

@jslanger I went to settings>privacy> and choose Factory Reset. Yes i know that you have to reinstall and setup the phone, but I am glad I did. Battery life has been great. I'm not in a LTE area but like mentioned battery was draining quick before.
Also I wouldn't recommend you use a back to restore, just in case that something with OS setup from Samsung causing this.

Search for Titanium Backup in the Android Market. You will have to check and see if it requires the pro version to freeze apps.

just to help you guys possibly, i moved some APPS to my SD card last night, at work i noticed mediaserver was second in my battery list and my phone was draining faster than normal
after moving the apps back to the phones internal, the drain seemed to stop, i also wiped the sd card just to be safe as i usually stream pandora anyways , but just another option to look out for

Weird....
So I've been closely following my battery life because it kind of sucks.
I had great battery life at home while on wifi over the weekend...about 18 hours no problem. I recharged it today at work, and was not getting great life during the day while on LTE/4G
Got home, turned on wifi, and the battery drain completely leveled out. I also noticed that while on cellular, the "Awake" bar is solid. As soon as I'm on wifi, it was able to not be continuously awake.
Not sure if anyone can comment on the reasons that this would be, but usually its the OPPOSITE. I really dunno why this would be.
Any help is appreciated!

Here is my battery life. Rooted and haven't froze any of the apps yet.
I know i

That sounds like what I have right now.
My phone is rooted and I have it unplugged since 9AM. It is now 3PM and down to 50%. This is what I did:
Bluetooth Headphone + music for about 1hr
Downloading apps + updating + reinstalling + backups + uploading for about 30 min
Texting + a few emails + fruit ninja + angry birds + GBA emulator for about 30 min
I'd save more battery if it wasn't for the data+CPU intensive activities.
Goto the verizon store and talk to the manager. Tell him to push the hybrid prl to your phone. Mine is 13006 & battery is at 80% (off charge 6am) at 3:34pm. Looks like a major fix for me and the wife's thunderbolt.

Try Battery Monitor Widget. I was surprised to see that my phone uses significantly less power while idle on 3G than connected to WiFi.

I spoke. With corporate about that, tier 2. They said prl updates automatically on boot and the is no way to push a specific version. They also said prl is for voice roaming in non VZW covered areas and isn't related to the 4g radio, as only VZW towers support LTE.

What does your usage look like? If I just open up my phone for emails and text (very light usage), I lose about 10% every 4 hours or so. Also I think you can edit your tower preferences by dialing " ##778# " . I'm not sure if it's the same but sounds quite similar.

The reps on the phone are full of it! I have been on the new prl and it doesn't change when I reboot or bsttery pull. It has something to do with wether or not you are in an area that use to be alltel. If u goto the store they should know what ur talking about. If not have them call the Hattiesburg, MS store.

Actually yeah that does sound about normal. There are of course alot of variables when it comes to battery life. What you actually use and leave running, how much and how often you use it and of course how strong a signal you might have or not have.
I get better battery life than that however there are a number of things I remove from my phone that I do not use and I shut just about all syncing off. Naturally that will make a difference.
I see so much about battery life on our phones and what confuses me is what do people expect? Really these smartphones are just about like walking around with a laptop in your pocket. How much time of continuous use can one expect to get out of that? I know most laptops you would get maybe a few hours of use on the standard batteries after a few months of use. I guess thinking of it like that are we really doing that bad?
Sure I'd love to see a battery that will last 2 days and I can use my phone constantly but at least at this point and time that simply not going to happen.
I know you are not complaining here but I just wanted to vent a little bit lol

you have to have something running constantly on that phone. might want to pick up a app in the market and check what is running that thing like that. system monitor is one app and there are others as well. either that or you just have a bad battery but not likely

Try watchdog lite. Just don't set it to update constantly, it'll eat your processor if you do.

Okay, I know I'm not from the TB side as I have an Evo, but one thing to keep in mind is that if you leave 3g/4g turned on, it constantly tries to find a superior signal. Use wifi where available. Also, turn 3g and 4g off when you don't need them, and don't leave stuff set to sync on its own. Other things that can be done to improve battery life are lowering your screen brightness and adjusting the screen timeout/sleep interval. The lower each of these are set, the more battery you will save. If your screen is always on, it's constantly drawing battery, obviously. Also, in my experience, the HTC charging kernels have a tendency to be a bit finicky when it comes to charging 90-100%. Sure, your phone may show 100% charged, but if you pull off the charger and it drops 3-8% in the course of 5 minutes, it clearly wasn't 100% charged to begin with.
However, if you meant to say that you were following these guidelines and still having this issue, I would say you very well may have a defective/weak battery.
root your phone and download imoseyons leankernel.
i can get over 24 hours of battery time pretty easily as long as i'm not using it heavily, and that's with an overclocked cpu to 1.4 ghz.
i have been turning APN off via extended controls and my battery life has gone to bearable to good! I am really happy about it b/c the widget works perfectly and turns on and off in virtually seconds, and completely turns off all radios other than the one for calls and texts.
So until I have root and am able to adjust the battery life in that way this is working great.
here's mine on das bamf 1.2 and ziggy's april 6th kernel at 1497/368 on smartass governor w/ 2750 battery...mediaserver was me streaming mecanto over 3g for 4-5 hours, also used pandora over 3g, but only for an hour or so...no wifi used in the last day..radio set to cdma auto so it doesnt look for 4g.
brightness and sync on whatever I want, I keep beautiful widgets at 15 minute update, not sure anything else syncs...mail seems to sync when I switch to the screen with the mail widget or whenever I open the mail or gmail app..

Yea, I just posted on another board that I will not be able to stay with this phone. Im going to have to shell out 600-700 for an off-contract Bionic. My phone was 100% at 7AM this morning.. After sitting in the car all day at work, 10 hours later, it's down to 75%. I figure that's not bad.
Well in the 4 hours since Ive been off work, Ive made ONE 30min phone call and sent 20 texts. The phone is dead. Didnt do any surfing. One call, twenty texts.
This is unacceptable.
EDIT: Yes, I checked the partial wake usage and nothing is running in the background. I have nothing syncing either. There's only like 5 things in the battery info screen.. Phone call, Display, Phone Standby, Cell Idle, Android System, and Android OS. The single 30 minute voice call accounts for 47%, 30 minutes of Display is 21%, and the idle and standby are the rest.
ive called verizon about the hybrid prl they just lol its an auto update they cant just push it to your phone maybe your in a 4g lte area but im not

Double Standby time

Hey guys,
Just wanted to share a few things I stumbled upon recently. The first thing we usually notice is really crappy battery life when we flash a new rom. I tried using a bunch of stuff like juice defender etc. I recently used the MIUI rom and then came back to dexters 1.3. Anyways this time I used a small app called Battery Calibration. Basically what it does is delete the batterystats.bin which is generated by each ROM. Charge till hundred, use the app and then discharge completely once. Then recharge the second time. I noticed a 200% increase in battery life on dexters. I dont use my phone alot but this was with around 1 hour talk, 2-3 hrs one and off browsing, 30-40 texts, a few photo's etc. It lasted 1 d 14 hrs when usually itd last around 20 hours. So you guys can give it a try.
Another thing, juice defender works by toggling the data connection. Now I use Edge as mobile data and wifi at home. I realized my battery lasts as long as if not more than with juice defender. Ive come up with a theory, that apps which disable the connection takes more juice because with every screen on the radio has to search for the network, wifi signal and then connect to it. Leaving my data on all the time, or wifi on all the time does nothing at all to the battery in the idle state. It only uses juice when there is data transfer. I left my wifi on all day with autosync off and it cost me 2% juice. Anyways give these tips a try. Worked for me well.
Calibrate your batteries after each flash and dont use any third party monitoring apps. And set your wifi to sleep with the screen, tell me how it works out for you!

I use both those actually 3rdstring turned me on the to Battery Calibrator, but I purchased the Juice Defender Plus b/c it has the ability to customize its toggle for each individual app. Enable, Enable/screen off (good for online music or something like that b/c your screen eats battery and is chief in temperature hikes), Disable or Do Nothing. Their is a Juice Defender Ultimate, but has a lot of things that XT720 doesn't use or need like 4g toggle and stuff like that.
The makers of Juice Defender have another app called Juice Plotter that shows you battery use. Was useful for a week or so but it is another service that is running in the background all the time so I uninstalled it.
There is a nice monitor app that I have had since day one called Battstats and it is a simple widget that has a low memory footprint when running in the background but it show the charge %, Volts (4.2 +/- is full charge) and temperature (c/f). Small 1x1 widget so it doesn't eat a whole lot of memory and I have found that it is fairly accurate.
One last thing is if you are overclocking, make sure that it is set right or you will eat more battery than it is worth, not too mention stability issues. If you set the vsels too low, the phone will reboot now and then on its own. If you set it too high, then it eats unnecessary battery. I have mine at 1100/ 74 and is totally stable. Volts might be a little high, but it works for me. Depends on what you want though b/c overclocking makes you phone faster but kills battery power. Underclocking slows things down but uses less battery. SetCPU can set up profiles for this.

You need to discharge it once completely till it turns off itself. Did you do that? First charge till 100, then use the calibration, then discharge completely doing your normal stuff. Then completely recharge Im sure youll notice a change. I did

Hey 3rdstring. I had my setcpu settings like that before I stopped using it. The reason was when you set it low at screen off and you get a call it lags real bad. Like when you are trying to accept the call by swiping the lock to the right its lagging, even the ringer skips abit. I also noticed with the cpu set low to 250 the phone has trouble finding antennae and signals. I've seen no increase in battery life with either set cpu or juice defender. Does this happen to you?

I also noticed with the cpu set low to 250 the phone has trouble finding antennae and signals. I've seen no increase in battery life with either set cpu or juice defender. Does this happen to you?

What are your cpu settings bud? I just redid mine for now and i will see how it does. I'm running 1200mhz really stable for about 2 weeks now on miui without setcpu. I just noticed also in settings/system/about phone it has my phone model listed as Nexus S, I was wondering if that is what it's supposed to be running MiuiV3. I think it's messing with my setting options in setcpu.

You need to discharge it once completely till it turns off itself. Did you do that? First charge till 100, then use the calibration, then discharge completely doing your normal stuff. Then completely recharge Im sure youll notice a change. I did

Battery calibration brick
Tried the battery calibration on my nieces phone today, Let it drain all the way then oh **** wouldn't turn on or charge. She wasn't too happy with it lmao. I told her to take the battery out for at least an hour and try again and it worked. Luckily for me! lol.

Lol, sorry it isnt working for you guys. One thing though when it completely discharges it takes a lil time for it to have enough juice to turn on. So it not like the battery got screwed on anything. Im still getting a battery life of 1.5 days when before It was extremely bad like 20 hours.

Info about my battery life

My battery seems to be REALLY bad. Worse than most peoples from what i gather from reading threads. I get about 8 hours from a full charge with minimal use. It seems that my screen is taking up most of the battery, according to my battery use page.... Any one else having major battery drain like I am??

My display is taking a huge percentage as well. Everything else is low percentages. Don't know why. My screen is always either on auto brightness or completely dim.

Give it a while and a few recharges. It should get better. Same thing happened to me. It's slowly getting better. I have it about a week now.

I was getting 7 to 8 hours at first, had my phone almost 2 weeks now and am now getting just under 20 hours with moderate use.
Give it time. My sensation has far better battery life compared with my DHD.

Peeps, you missed most important thing. Look at the AWAKE line. Either OP is playing a lot with th phone, or something is not letting it sleep.
Yeah, the battery really plummets when you actually use the phone (even on low brightness) but it idles quite efficiently at least...
Did u try juice defender? Just asking ify bout the sensation dnt knw either to get it or wait for sumthing else

Yeah, noticed same thing
I downloaded juice defender beta? whatever the free one was. To me that app does not have a good layout at all, either that or I was missing something. There dont seem to be any personalization settings at all. I dont trust apps to work when they just say "im doing something!!" ya know?
Now that I think about it on that charge I was playing music while I worked on my car for a while, that would explain the awake time. Even without doing that battery life is still really bad and the screen takes up 80%+. I will post another pic after my battery dies today. Dont plan on using it much so hopefully it will last longer.
That is good news about life getting better after a week or two though cause 8 hours with moderate use is unacceptable. My MT4G got a good 24 hours with pretty heavy use, I expect this thing to get at least half that.
i use juice defender and under normal use and a few hours of pandora streaming on wifi im at 35 hours at 40% battery
My phone was also drained like madness, within 6 hours it was empty, even if I didn't do anything with it. At the moment it is better, I did a factory reset through the startup of the phone (turn phone off, remove batt, place batt, hold volume down and push on/off button). There is an option to factory reset.
Strange thing was that when I turned off my phone before the factory reset, it was telling 34% batt. Right after the factory reset is was at 89% ???
I use Battery Status Bar app to display my batt in percentage...
But the good news is, my problem is now solved. Battery lasts for more than a day at normal use and 6-8 hours while very actively handeling it.
Looks like it was a reading wrong information or something...
Got 11 hours out of a battery today. So far its been charging for 4.5 hours and is at 94% charge. Takes about half as long to charge it as it does to kill it!
I will give juice defender a try. Seems like it works for a lot of people.

I had same kind of long charging last night. Battery died at about 7:30pm. I plugged it and did not turn the power on. Went to play some ice hockey and after that I turned the power on again at about 10:10pm and it was still charging. At about 11:20pm(still charging) I unplugged for a couple of seconds to see the specs of the charger and then plugged back, surprisingly percentage jumped to 100. It was still on 100 this morning at about 8:00am.
Now I found out that phones own battery monitor tells me that time on battery is roughly 8 hours But when I check the time from Battery Indicator it tells me that time on battery is roughly 15 hours, which is correct.
Seems that a lot of people are getting false battery readings, me included. I did a factory reset last night and this seemed to fix this, at least until now it seems to report correct (realistic) values. I haven't charged the battery after the reset so we will see if charging messes it up again...
I hope this is a software problem, i really don't want to exchange my phone, i don't have any of the other problems.
what sort of battery times are acceptable for this phone? many are suggesting factory resets and all i wonder if i should do it or not. if i charge the phone overnight it goes to power saver mode usually say 8-9pm and then the power saver mode (basically dim screen and no gps wifi remains on) is managing to hold the power till i go to bed and charge it. is this ok?
juice defender seems to be recommended eh? maybe one should should try that before the factory reset. btw if factory reset done whats the best way to restore your phones contacts to how they are now? i mean it took forever to link all the facebook, phone and microsoft exchange contacts and offcourse gmails. dont want to go through that again.
I tried juice defender last night and it didnt seem to help. I lost 45% overnight without me even using the phone! When I fell asleep the battery meter said 100% still and I woke up to 55%. The phone says there is some awake time, wonder what it could be? As much as I dont want to do it I think a factory restore may be an option since nothing else is really helping. Should I wait until the battery is 100% before I reset it?
Some new pics, keep in mind I was asleep for all of this use except for what the screen awake time says.

I would say you battery life isnt that bad, if it lasts a day then it sounds about right. People are saying the batteries last longer after a couple weeks or so. If you do factory reset try and connect to wifi when google is restoring your contacts and such, it makes things go a lot faster.
I managed just over 9 hours on my first charged but I'm recharging it now and it went straight up to 31% when it booted up again :S
Me and my gf both have a Sensation now(i upgraded from HTC Desire, and she a HTC Legend), we are both pleased with the battery on the phones, she uses stock Sense, and i use LauncherPro, though we did learn something from our older phones, the thing that drains battery extremely much is all the notification emails Facebook automatically send(gmail push), these are almost turned off to 100%, next thing is to turn off all syncronisation in the phone you don't use, ex. i use Launcherpro therefore i don't need the phone to update Sense's own weather, and so on.
We both normally charge the phone every night, but i guess my phone would last almost 2 days on days i don't use it that much.
I must say i am extremely satisfied with my phone, the thing that i dislike the most is the camera, or to say it in a different way, if i didn't know the SG2 had a slightly better camera i may have been more satisfied

You should not have anywhere near 100% awake time unless you're using the phone at all times. You have some app that is not shutting down or auto-updating far too often. That's your culprit - find it and your battery life will improve.

[Q] Any type of battery fix?

Insert whiny post about how much my battery life sucks.
Now that I've just rooted my Inspire, are there any fixes that are available that will help improve battery life? I am using the RCDMix3D rom, and my phone barely lasts 6 hours. I take all of the suggested actions like turning off bluetooth, gps, wifi, autosync, and background data, but it doesn't seem to help much. I even bought a 1600mAH battery, which lasts no longer than the standard 1230mAH one.
So, looking for anything I can flash, or download, or whatever that will help improve it. Good battery life is something I really need in a phone, and the Inspire's is the one thing that is making me consider switching phones. (which I'd rather not do, I love this phone!)
Thanks!
honestly if you are only getting six hourse with the setup you have, im tempted to say something is wrong with your phone......
unless you are getting 4 or more hours of screen-on time. how much screen on time?
i was getting 15 hours out of the box with 2 hours of screen on. now with leedroid, slightly underclocked, im getting about 24 hours with 3 hours screen time.

OP, if you're talking 6 hours to go from 100% to 0%, you've got something else going on. Big time. Especially of you're turning off all that stuff and *still* only getting 6 hours.
Now, if you had the screen on that entire time, I'd actually say you have great battery life, but I suspect that's not the case.
If it happens with both of your batteries, there has to be something else running on your phone, perhaps as a background service, that's sucking that much juice.
@ OP:
I get like 1 hour call per 18-20% battery on 3G/H. So 6 hours of call time from 100 to 0 is good in my opinion.
If not on calls: I did a stress test 2 days back. I got ~6.5 hours display time for movies from 100 to 5% battery with display at 25%.
So like people pointed out above, unless u r continuously on calls or having display on for atleast 3-4 hours with data transfer on 3g/h, something is wrong.
Here are my normal stats:
1 hour calls, 2 hours display exclusively with data transfer, all these on 3G/H, with about 12 hours standby, I come home with about 35-40% battery left.
I agree with the posters above there is definitely something wrong. Slightly UC & UV I get 6-7h screen time.

A lot of testing with legitimate lab equipment has proven that ProdiCell batteries are not actually 1600mah, rather 1060mah which is actually lower than stock. Sorry if you bought one of their batteries.
I wasn't able to find the blog I was reading last night, but I can link you to the amazon comment thread where I first started my online research. >> Link <<
Yikes, that would suck if it was something wrong with the phone. I bought it off someone and was practically brand new, but I think it is out of warranty now.
It did this both before and after I had rooted my phone, so I'm not sure what background processes there could be that would be causing this? I know that some of the AT&T bloatware was always running in the background before (like Blockbuster), but I have since removed all of that crap.
I planned on doing some stress-testing today just to see. So far it has been unplugged for 56 minutes with 15 minutes of display time on, a 3 minute phone call, and using the internet for 5 minutes. Also sent/received about 20 SMS. Battery is at 94%.
Maybe I will switch back to the stock battery that came with the phone and see if there is any improvement. The one I am using now is meant for an HTC Desire, but I had read that those with an Inspire were able to use it with improvements. Not sure what brand makes it, but I do know it came from eBay That could be it by itself hah.

Have you tried a battery calibration? It's easy to do manually, but there's a convenient app on market called, wait for it... battery calibration, that makes it a one-click process.
I really doubt it's the phone hardware itself. Probably some combo of battery/calibration/rom/kernel/radio.
BTW, the phone just came out in mid-February, so technically it's not out of warranty. It's like a year or year and a half or something.
I'll try that app for sure. Thanks!
When I called HTC in May to order replacement battery/SIM door covers, they said my warranty would run out in the next month. Maybe the CS rep was a moron.
Do a fresh install and calibrate your battery. Use titanium backup to freeze user apps. Add your apps one by one to find out which apps are hogging your battery. Also, try charging it before you go to bed. Take it off the charger, and when you wake, check to see if your phone uses more than 1% battery per hour.

Also make sure to turn off WiFi & mobile data when not using it, that will extend your charge.

I literally just rooted/flashed my ROM yesterday. I charged the phone back up to 100% today and used that calibration app, and so far it seems to have helped. It definitely uses more than 1% an hour. So far it's at 45% after having been unplugged for 5 hours and 37 minutes, with 2 hours and 4 minutes of display time, 10 minutes of phone calls on 3G, sent/received about 100 texts, checked/downloaded about 20 emails, and taken 10 or so pictures.
Of course, WiFi/Background data/auto-sync/bluetooth/GPS are off, and brightness is at about 40%.
I've got a weird one on this particular battery cycle. I used the battery calibration app before I went to sleep last night and unplugged the phone at 100% charge. While I was asleep...the dialer used 16% of my battery according to my battery stats and the total battery was down into the 60%'s...I searched google, and other sources / forums report a reboot fixes it, and the issue likely occured from a "Wake Lock State" occuring at my last previous phone call the previous evening...ugh hell of a bug...I haven't rebooted it yet, and still notice even plugging and unplugging all day dialer still in low teens for batt. %...seems to be an Android thing although thre seemed to be a preponderance of HTC's...but they are popular devices and there was a Samsung tablet in there with the same thing...
I just got a whole day with 3 hours screen time and gmail and htc sense getting updates, more than 100 texts and 40 minutes of calls and wifi on half the time the battery on this phone is awesome. At night i get maybe 2-3% drain in about 7 hours. I suggest you find a ROM with some UV capabilities, the ones with the oc/uv daemon are great as they already have the settings built in.

Wow, that's pretty good. What ROM are you using?
Doing a nandroid backup, and then gonna flash Gingerbeast after work to see if battery improves or not.
That's another weird thing about my phone; one of the places I work my shifts are only 4 hours long. I go in and the battery is at about 95% because I've been streaming music on the way there. I come out, and it's down to 30%, or less. The funny part is I don't even get a cell signal down there, and when I do I send and receive maybe 20 texts during that time. Nothing else. Don't even turn the display on aside from that.
So, for Gingerbeast, is there a different kernel I need to flash? I was reading a little about it, but as I am still new to this whole thing, I'm not entirely sure what that is. Do I just flash it using CWM? I downloaded one from LordMod that is supposed to help.
Thanks again all!

The reason why you are losing so much battery is your phone is trying to connect to a tower in order to gain service. Switch to airplane mode when at work.

There's the culprit!!! When phone does not have proper signal, it increases the radio power so that it may not lose connection. And when connection comes in, and is good enough, it starts to slowly scale down the power to the radio.
Hahaha, that's awesome. I was thinking the exact same thing as the three posts above me when I was working today... kind of an "oh, duh!" moment, then I come back and check the thread and ya'll confirmed it.
Flashing Gingerbeast right now, so hopefully that will show if it's the ROM or my hardware that's causing the battery drain. Gonna try it out for the rest of the day, though I will miss my Sense 3.0

[Q] Battery Life, Return Or Not?

First off, I am loving the phone. It is such a massive leap from the N1 I had been using. While I expected lower battery life, I did not expect to run through 70% of the battery in 4 hours with moderate usage.

I have heard of people getting far better battery life, and have tried the various methods, from charging to 100% then turning the phone off and charging again to 100%, using juice defender ultimate, and even resorting to factory resetting the phone. Still I can't get any kind of good life out of the battery. My question is should I try and get a full replacement for the phone or just the battery? I've only had it sinceblast Thursday, so I know AT&T will happily exchange it, but if yall think it's just the battery, I'd rather just replace that then the whole phone.

Have you found out what is using your battery?.. Even before I rooted and all the other stuff was getting at least 10hr.. now Im getting 24-28hours...
Are you running another ROM other than stock?
Didn't want to root if I needed to return anything, so I am running stock currently. Looking no app seems to be running away and draining all the battery. Everything looks the same as it did on my N1 in terms of what's draining the battery, which is what lead me to believe it's a bad battery possibly.

Well if you do root than TPC's Rom is the best. It comes with kernel and the battery life is outstanding.

I was concerned with battery life at first as well. When I first got this thing I had to plug up 9 hours after I unplugged. So now I am near 30 days with it and the battery seems to have leveled out enough for me to be happy. I got 16 hours on it STOCK no ROOT the other day without plugging in, was at 10% when I finally plugged in. Yesterday I activated Juice Defender again after getting some questions answered. I got 17 hours without a plug in and was still at 25%, so i probably could have gotten 20+ hours if I needed it.
So I am happy now 17+ hours is plenty long enough for me, I always plug in at bedtime anyway.
I'm wondering how many people who are reporting battery issues, if they have calibrated them. Charge your battery all the way, use the phone until the battery dies, then fully charge. This will give a more accurate reading as far percentage used.

Well if you do root than TPC's Rom is the best. It comes with kernel and the battery life is outstanding.

There is a new ROM Piret RC1, the battery life is amazing, it has a different Kernel as the one with TPC has it';s problems.
RC1 is clean fast and in 2 hours I used up 4%. Then turned every possible service on used it up like crazy to drain the battery, installing/backing up/ flashing new rom and it took 2 hours with heavy usage to drain from 17%. Just to compare last night I had a TPC ROM and was on WhatsApp for about an Hour and battery went from 85 to 34 %.
Re: Returning the phone.
First once you root you can the same way unroot, make sure first you install a stock ROM.
My friends have the same problem, one with this phone, and others with android phones in general, don;t waist your time returnig. To be safe you also have a year to send it to Samsung to get fixed if there is something wrong with it.
Basically, running apps will kill battery, location services kills it the most, sync not so much, heavy use of data does to (I have LTE plan). Use power saver to start at 70%, configure it right, use the CPU app to manage the speed ondemand.
Most important don't frick out, the andoid phones are like that, the major difference is that Iphone does maybe 20% of what android phone does in standby and many things are not available on Iphone, so the battery is better. You will not get more then a day of use on android if you use it to your benefit. 28H is mostly standby, no sync, no internet usage, just moderate. I used to use Iphone heavy and battery would not last a day.
Get a good data plan, don;t use WI-Fi unless u have too, when syncing with the car plug it in the charger, spend extra $10 get a Samsung cable from them, don;t go for cheap 10 dollar once or even 1 dollar once from China, they are very slow to charge. My cable from the box take 1.5 H to charge to 100.
Hope it helps, please don;t quote me on anything, this is purely based on research and one week usage and trying different things, it's strictly my opinion, don;t expect your phone to last like they use too, it's 21st century and techno in it is overwhelming and needs power. Keep the phone have two cables and enjoy!
This is my first smart phone, after 20 plus years of having cel phones. I try to read before posting any questions.

good habit to get into thanks for that....the search button is your friend.
I have been reading on the battery issues, long before I posted. I have done everything from calibrating, to using juice defender ultimate, to doing a ritualistic dance to try and coax more battery life out of this phone. Still with nothing but 2 phone calls and one quick spelling look up, dead within 8 1/2 hours.
I just got my extra battery and charger from samsung in today, already fully charged up this battery and will see what it can do for a few days. I'm hoping my problems are just a random bad battery. I also factory restored and am running bare minimum on apps just to try and remove all variables. If there still is a problem I will exhange it for another one next week. I just hope they still have some white ones in stock

My battery went completely dead too. I returned mine. Black model though. New one is doing okay so far. Better since it doesn't report 100% battery until a reboot...
Finally went and exchanged it last night. So far I have gotten 9 hours of battery life and am only down to 70%. Better than before, but the vertical lines on the screen are worse on this one than the last.

I have almost the opposite "problem." Not that I'd call it a problem just yet. I had my phone running from about 10am till 1am yesterday. I went to bed and plugged the charger in and it instantly said "battery charged 100%. Remove charger." 15 hours with no drain at all? Granted, I didn't do much with it yesterday but send about 20 text messages.
Going on 32 hours+ battery life and no vertical lines.. bought it when it came out Nov6....

30% in 9 hr's? you need to see what is killing your battery... unless you play games or on the net all day.. that is not good at all..
I lose about 1% an hour..
I don't know what you smoking man but i tried his rom and never had issues. Let me tell you I Have ORD so my suggestion will be based on my usage rather than prediction. I have tried most of the themed/tweaked roms. Don't like stock rom.

Considering I used to be lucky to get 10% drain an hour on standby before, the 3% our so i'm losing an hour now is awesome. And in those 9 hours I checked google reader and played some levels of Trial Extreme 2.

Here is my battery currently.
70% in a little over 20 hours was unheard of on my last one.
