[Q] After Odin to KC1 stock, sd card and usb port problems - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

After an ODIN to KC1 stock, the phone no longer recognizes the external SD card and says it is not mounted -- but when it gets to the home screen, I can see progress messages saying that the phone is actually reading the external SD card.
Also, the USB port doesn't work right. When I turn on USB debugging, messages alternatively flash in the top status bar that USB is connected and USB debugging is connected, even when the USB cable is not plugged in. When I plug the USB cable in, I do not get any dialog in notifications allowing me to turn the USB on. If I turn USB debugging off, I can see an external drive in Windows explorer but cannot access it.
Now, when I try to turn on USB debugging, the phone tells me to disconnect the USB cable -- but it's not connected.
The phone, if turned off, does not want to boot unless I plug the USB cable in. It is very difficult to get a connection to the phone so that ODIN will run. Sometimes I can get it into download mode but ODIN won't recognize the phone. Sometimes I can ODIN when the phone displays the cell + comp error message.
ODINing KD1 stock gives the same results. The phone was not like this when I first got it.
Where should I go from here?

wow. thats a lot of problems that i havent seen yet. i would say start back fresh. remove the sd card and format it with your computer. then put the update.zip from krylons cwm, ext4 converter, and icbinb (or w/e rom you are flashing) on it and leave it. odin to kc1 from raver. let the phone sit for 10 min or so and then push the recovery file from krylons final cwm to the right place. once you do that, shut the phone down completely. put the sd card back in. it should only have those 2 or 3 files on it. reboot recovery, wipe everything, check your mounts, flash the ext4 converter and then the rom. let the rom sit for 15 min after that initial google boot sequence. once that is done, reboot reboot recovery and fix permissions. and see if those problems persist.

Do I need a driver for Windows XP to be able to write to the sdcard once it is converted to ext4?

The sd card isn't bring converted to ext4. Format it with it's default settings. You can always create an ext4 partition, but right now we are doing something else

do I odin KC1 with the sd card in the phone or should it not be on the phone? I had it in the phone when I odined KC1.

since you had it in before, try removing the sd card and the sim card and odin. i never had a problem with them in, but some people have experienced problems.

got CWM installed after reformatting sdcard from phone using settings.
After reformatting the 16 gig sd card, the phone would still not mount it. I thought there might be something wrong with the card, so I found an old 4 gig sd card from another phone and formatted that and the phone was able to mount that card. For some unknown reason, the card is named “Blackberry” even though I never had such a phone. I could not install CWM, so I reflashed KC1 with odin, this time with no sim card or sd card in the phone. The phone still would not connect to the USB ports on my laptop, but on my desktop at work, it will connect.
The phone recognizes the SD card and I was able to move recovery to system/bin, but when I try to install packages, I get the following error message:
E:Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(no such file or directory)
E:Can’t mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted
I checked /dev/block and sure enough, there is no mmcblk0p1 file.
Looking up that error, I have found threads and fixes for other phones, and one suggestion to format the sd card from the phone. I did that under settings after copying the undotted files and directories to the computer, and copied those files and directories back to the sd card.
I then did a recovery reboot and reinstalled packages. Finally, CWM installs.

thats pretty random, but im glad its working! let me know how the rom flashing goes!

So then I installed ext4 and the icbinb rom via CWM, but the phone just hung at the bootscreen until I went back to CWM and installed the Bali 3.3 kernel, which I had stuck on the sdcard just in case. The phone then booted up and the usb port now seems to be working properly, at least when connected to the computer at work. The root problem was the sdcard, which needed to be formatted from the phone and not from the computer. I'll have to see if I can get the other sd card to work. I still can only see the external sd card from windows, but maybe that is just the way this phone works. This is a big relief. Thank you very much for your help.
Now, all I have to do is get my Vibrant working. I took it apart to replace a broken screen and there have been all kinds of problems since. But that's another project.

you will only see the external memory on the sgs4g. you will not see the internal memory, as it is reserved for the system rom and ram

Does the 4G not have an internal SD card like the Vibrant?
The phone still has a few problems. The biggest one is that it will not start unless it is plugged in to a charger or usb cable, even if the battery is fully charged. I think for some reason it is not reading the battery and doing what a phone with a discharged battery would do. I forgot to take a charger or usb cable with me today and I got no phone. I haven't tried recalibrating the battery yet, maybe that would fix the problem. But at least the phone is running like an xda-developers special with all the bells and whistles now. Thanks.

No, the vibrant has 16gb on board, the sgs4g doesn't. you can only access the sdcard from the computer.
If battery calibration doesn't fix that startup problem, it may be a hardware problem

[HELP] Uninstalled LG drivers now SD card is not recognized

Well, after getting a blue screen on my PC I then tried what most suggested: DELETE/UNINSTALL any LG driver and re-plug phone to install drivers again.
I went to uninstall programs and got rid of the LG driver there, then plugged my phone up and apparently installed two out of three files successfully. I rebooted my pc and now I plug my phone to it and two things:
1. My computer does not see the sdcard
2. My phone does not see my sd card
When I try to go with phone file manager to SD card it says.... SD card not mounted.
What to do now?
Is it mounted in the Settings > Sd card & Storage menu?
Nope...
I'm running cm7 and in the storage menu there are 3 breaks:
the first one for the SD card, second one for internal and third one to show you how much space is left in the SD card...
Well, in the 1st slot there is not card mounted but in the last one it does show how much space is left/used.... very weird if you ask me!
I will check if the sdcard is not bricked now with a sdcard reader...
well, I think the SDcard is bricked.... I put in the SD reader and connected to my pc and it is not being recognized!
UPDATE: Bought a new sdcard and I still can't mount my card to the pc? WTF!!

Have you reinstalled the LG drivers? Your PC cannot access even the SD card without those drivers.
This is why, once I upgraded past G1, I decided to not root anymore. 2.2 with a strong phone works great. I focus on being a "power user" and not a modder because, quite frankly, it takes way too much effort and the risk of messing up my phone is too great. I just don't understanding stepping out on that ice all the time, when the phone works so well without modding it beyond the user experience.
download from LG site
Hi,
Have you tried downloading and installing the latest drivers from LG website?
I couldn't connect to SD at first until I used the downloaded drivers.
No problems anymore here.
grtz,
Pfeffa-rah
UPDATE: I have went back to eagleblood's rom and now I am able to mount my internal and external sdcards to my pc *HAPPY*
I plan on going back to CM7 and hopefully I am able to mount the cards again without the BSOD!
UPDATE: as stated earlier... I went back to CM7 and now all my f'ng drivers are messed up again...not able to mount/unmount SDcard!!
CM7 should look into this.

[A]MicroSD won't mount in recovery or android

::::::::ROBLEM::::::::::::
ok, just posting this in case anyone has a similar problem and does a search so that this will come up for them.
My phone died in the middle of booting up while it was doing a media scan.
Upon plugging the phone in and letting it charge for a while, I turned it on and the sd card wasn't recognized. I rebooted to recovery and it would also not mount there.
I tried formatting from recovery with extreme FAILURE LOL.
SD card reads fine from PC through a usb adapter.
Formatted SD card from pc and tried it in the phone again and still would not recognize it through several different recoveries or in android.
FIX::::::::::

So what I ended up having to do was connect the phone to the computer through the supplied USB cable.
Odin the charge.pit file make sure repartition is checked
Odin a full rom combo of any type, I used ep1q bloated.
Then booted into recovery and everything was successful in mounting the microsd card. Installed the rom of my choosing and it recognized it fine in android again as well.
Just figured some other person may have this problem again. I figured my microSD went tits up, but it was fine when used in the PC. Thanks for listening.
What my solution to this was
Shortly after putting my 16gb micro SD card from my Evo3d to EvoLTE, it wouldnt mount. stick it in, "mounting SD" and immediately "Removing SD" etc. Same thing with another android phone while their SD mounted fine.
Plug into windows and there is no SD to mount so i tried a microSD to SD converter card in windows and after very long delays i would see my file structure but nothing copied over.
Heirens Boot CD (i had 15.1) booted into the linux recovery/backup mode and was able to copy from SD to the HDD. Not sure if i'll try to wipe and re-use or just replace the 16GB card nor if it will mount at that point. Its still copying various folders but i got all my DCIM (4gb worth) back so i'm a happy camper either way.
Just thought i'd share how i got my data back at least

How to flash a ROM with out USB

I've done a very silly thing and fear I may have bricked my phone
A little while ago my phone's USB connection kicked the bucket and in a rather foolish attempt to get rid of everything I re-formatted the lot and now have a completely non-functioning phone
I have a Samsung Galaxy S (GT-I9000) and had "ClockworkMod Revovery v2.5.1.3" installed with a "Voodoo Lagfix" when things started to go a little funky. Wanting to remove any trace of hackery before sending the phone back for warranty I booted into recovery mode and reformatted every partition I could, one after the other, only to discover that not only did this not remove the hacked boot-loader but it completely rendered my phone unusable! Now, without any image installed and not having a functioning USB connection I've been unable to flash a working ROM back again.
I do, however, still have a working ClockworkMod Recovery and have noted there is an option to "mount /sd-ext" and I am hoping there may be a way to sneak an image on to the phone through the external SD then use "choose zip from sdcard" to re image the phone. Anyone know if this is possible, and if so, would someone care to guide me through the process??
I came across this thread: Can I flash roms from external SD
Where the response was: "Yes, you can, just mount it from the CWM Recovery and you're set." which gives me hope but I'm not able to get there alone.
I have tried mounting the external SD card but get the message:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
(File exists)
Error mounting SDEXT:!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
You can copy rom on sd card, and flash in recovery mod

Thanks for that, I'm just not quite sure how to do it.
As I said I'm not able to mount the external SD card at the moment and even then I'm not quite sure what to do. If I do manage to mount it will it then be possible to navigate to the extranal SD with the "install zip from sdcard"?
In the mean time I have come across this nice looking tutorial for flashing to ICS but it says "Copy the downloaded ROM to your phone’s internal SD card (not microSD card)" which for me, sadly, is not an option :,-(
By the way, I'm not particularly fussed wich version of Android I managed to flash, I just want to be able to use my phone again.
Hmmm,
After more digging I've come to understand more about what I have done...
It would appear that what I did was foolishly reformat my system partition with out having another ROM to replace it - but it seems I may well have narrowly avoided formatting the boot partition.
Since doing this I have come across this extremely good advice:
Take extreme care with this option as formatting any of these partitions will result in losing all data on them, especially the boot and system partitions. Formatting the system partition will remove your ROM and leave your phone without an operating system while wiping the boot partition may brick your phone unless you restore or flash another one before rebooting your device. If only I'd read that before
I've also come to realize the "sd-ext" is not the external SD card at all and is in fact a kind of "extra" partition used especially for flashing ROMs.
So my problem gets deeper...
Is there any possible way to flash a ROM onto a phone with a formatted system partition and no working USB connection?
If there is, I'd dearly like to know how.
You can buy a micro usb card reader to transfer the ROM from your PC to your sd card then flashing it using CWM.

Sorry to be so darft but I can't work out how to flash from the external SD.
- By external I mean the removable micro SD card which is actually inside the phone.
I have another phone with which I can put the image on to the micro SD card, I'm just not sure what to do with it once I have it there.
I must be missing something pretty obvious because several people have said "just use CWM to flash from the SD card" but to be honest I just can't work out how to do it :s
I can get the image onto the micro SD card fine, the problem is that once I have the micro SD card with the new image on it in my 'bricked' phone I can't find how to get access to it with CWM?
if you can enter on cwm (home+vol up) you can flash all by your sd card, download a rom for your galaxy s, prefer for the official ones, put the zip on your sdcard, put your phone on cwm and select "install zip from external sd". i hope this help.
Idk if galaxy s have usb otg, but if have you can mount external usb in cwm.
and if you stay without understanding how to do it with cwm, go to galaxy s xda area:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=656
i hope you will find a good tutorial in there.
good luck
Hmm, just read a comment some where randomly on the internet:
"Depend on your CWM version, v5 install from external SD card by default. But you can select install from internal SD card too."
Perhaps "install from external SD card" is not supported in my version of CWM (v2.5.1.3 on a Samsung Galaxy S).
Maybe I should go ask about it in the SGS specific section.

Hehe, took the works right out of my mouth.
Thanks.
You essentially NEED adb access to push a rom to internal, as your phone's CWM version doesn't support external-sd card. Can you get ahold of another working cable? This would be the best route.

Thanks, I'm pretty certain it's the phones USB socket that is the problem though. It stopped responding to USB after a camping trip I went on and since then, even when it had a working ROM, I was unable to mount it as external storage. I have tried several cables and a couple of different computers and while it charges fine I was unable to get it to 'connect' as such. I have also checked the main cable I've been using with a different device and the cable worked as expected. When I started to get desperate I scrubbed it with a tooth brush and I even took the phone completely apart to sprayed the port with electrical contact cleaner but alas, it was to no avail.
I'm affraid i'm going to have to resolve this one sans USB
Why don't you buy a new cable ? An USB cable is always useful for daily use..

[Q] Phone SD not showing on PC...help

Hi all,
Have been having issues since last week with my phone connectivity to the PC. I'm able to connect it to my PC and see it in my device manager but my SD Cards don't mount. But in My Computer i do see an extra CD Drive & Removable Disk populate, though they contain nothing and when I select them they ask me to insert media. I have USB Debugging turned on and just did a fresh reinstall of the drivers.
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks,
Derek

This should fix you up...
1) Power down phone
2) Remove card
3) Mount the card in a card reader on a Windows machine and have it do an error check (and automatically fix file system errors).
4) While Windows is scanning your card, boot your phone with an empty card slot and then shut it down again after the boot is complete.
5) When Windows has finished repairing the card, reinsert in phone and boot normally. If it was not a physical problem with the card it should work again.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it out and i'm still getting the same result. Both the internal and external sd's are getting mounted as a cd-drive and removable disk but they don't contain any information still. I tried reinstalling drivers again and it didn't help. Not sure what could be causing this issue...it's very weird.
Turn off debugging and try again. My cpu will not allow mtp mode with debugging on. Turning it off allows it to work (for me)

I flashed back to root w root66 and the re-flashed CMW and CM10. This fixed the issue, although now i'm getting greyed out connection bars on both wifi and 4g, though they're still connected. Any reasoning for this?

[Q] Damaged SD card / won't mount - fix?

So in short my Droid Charge's SD card is screwed up.
I keep getting the message Damaged SD Card message in my notifications and I click it every time to format but then it doesnt do anything. When I try to view my photo gallery it says the sd card is blank or that there is no sd card. It wont let me use the camera because theres no sd card.
I'm rooted running Tweaked 3.0 with the latest FP5 updates after unrooting back to stock in order to get them. Tried to Odin back to stock a few times and then reflashing Tweaked a few times and still the same thing. Did factory/data reset, cache wipe, dalvik wipe a thousand times as well.
I am able to mount the sd card briefly in ClockworkMod Recovery, to view the files on the sd card but then about a minute or less later the sd card seems to unmount itself and becomes unrecognizable. Same for when I connect the phone via USB to my Windows 7 PC. If I pull out the physical sd card from the device, put it back in, hit connect to storage...the PC will recognize it for about a minute basically teasing me, letting me transfer a couple small files...and then unmounts itself and stops being read. Because of this I cant seem to partition the sd card in Windows 7 nor can I get it to complete and Check Disk.
I even bit the bullet while trying to format the sd card in CWM, and then while connect to the PC and I cant even get the card to format...
Obviously I'd prefer to some how save all the files on there before having to format if possible.
Tried searching around the forums but nothing seems to be similar to my problem. The ONLY thing I can come up with for the cause was that I mistakenly flashed the charge.PIT file while flashing Tweaked 3 in Odin. Not sure if thats the cause...
Any help and suggestions would be great. Thanks!!
It sounds to me like it's actually dead, or on its way. Try plugging it into your computer. Make note of the file name (eg F:\) Go to command prompt and type this:
Code:
chkdsk (drive letter with colon and backslash) /f /p
If that doesn't work, your last shot is probably this:
Code:
chkdsk (drive letter with colon and backslash) /r

Can you mount your SD card directly to your PC (i.e., pull it from your phone and use a card reader)? I've had troubles with SD cards in the past and by using a non-phone card reader have been able to save what was on the card or resurrect it back to the point of usability in the phone.

Yeah, I forgot to say be sure to do this with an SD or USB adapter rather than through your phone.

This actually sounds a lot like what can happen to SD cards on some HTC devices if the S-OFF goes bad. The two ways to fix it were to put it in a card reader and reformat it in Windows as FAT32, or there is a way to repartition and reformat it on the phone, but it requires you to know the pull /dev path to the SD card, and I don't know it for this phone.
Still no dice...
Ya I tried using an SD adapter that held the micro SD card, put that directly into my laptop's SD card slot and still had the same experience...it briefly reads and mounts...where i have enough time to dig few a couple folders on there and drag a couple small text docs off...then stops working.
I tried using those command prompts in CMD (chkdsk D:\ /f, chkdsk D:\ /p, and chkdsk D:\ /r) but none of them did the trick. Also the "/p" seems to be an invalid command for chkdsk? I cant seem to get it to partition in any utilities either.
Still cant format it using the adapter either in CMD or the regular Windows 7 interface.
There may also be an issue stemming from the possibility that I think its just acting as read/only. Is there a way to make it read/write? The option doesnt seem to show when i right-click on the briefly mounted sd card for its properties.
My last attempt last night was using Sandisk RescuePRO Deluxe. I started it around midnight and by 7am it was only at roughly 6.5% complete for some reason...arg.
Thoughts?

IIRC you will want to run cmd as administrator (by right clicking on its icon in the start menu). You should also look up some sort of guide if you haven't used it before.
Ughhhh
Still not working Im getting error messages not letting me format. It will select the disk though but then when i try to go further i get "diskpart has encountered an error"

Same issue happened with my ADATA card. I was able to recover the files by wiping the SD Card in TWRP first. Then recovering the boot partions/files using TestDisk. It worked for a while but ultimately, like Lehocki said, I had to get a new card. I was able to return it and get a replacement.
Weird, I had just had the same problem and am also using Tweaked 3.0. Interesting. I also had luck recovering many files using TestDisk,,,however several files were corrupted.
