[Q] possible soft brick nexus s - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have here is a Nexus S with the MUI Rom. The Rom was working for a couple of days until I ran out of battery. When I plug the charging cable, the phone powers on and shows the boot logo and then the google screen. I can't get pass the google screen or go into clockmod's recovery.

Have you tried reflashing recovery via fastboot? If you see the Google logo it's trying to boot.
Reflash recovery via fastboot and reflash your rom of choice.

I'd tried and didn't work either, but i was able to get to the bootloader screen. I can't get my computer to see the phone while its in the bootloader screen.

Maybe you could boot into recovery from the bootloader and use a nandroid backup of some sort?

I can't get into recovery from bootloader, when I click on recovery, it looks like it's going to boot but nothing happen. I leave the phone on over night and nothing happen.

Ah...no worries..
stay in ur bootloader.
download a clockworkmod recovery image and cd into the directory u r in.
Perform the following commands if you ALREADY have a recovery img installed:
1. fastboot erase recovery
2. fastboot flash recovery _____.img (the blank line is the recovery img name)
3. reboot into recovery and perform ur nandroid
If you DON'T have a recovery img installed, then skip step 1

Soft Brick..no USB to help
Nexus S 4g is not connecting to the mobile network. Because of this I am trying to go back to the Sprint stock firmware. USB is properly charging my phone, but I'm unable to have the device enumerated by my pc. I've tried multiple cables, OS's, and PCs. USB is not enumerated even in the bootload state.
I have reverted to a backup when everything was working, but I still have the same problem with the network and USB.
WiFi works so getting new firmwares from ClockworkMod is an option, but going to CM7 did not resolve the problem.
I've read the forums and not found any solution yet. Has anyone heard of this before? Are there any options I can still try through software?

[Q] (Q) How to leave bootloop after Adding Recovery went wrong in an attempt to root

Hi,
I used jaggyjags Tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415223 for unlocking and rooting my HTC Explorer.
I managed to unlock the bootloader.
When I set to adding a recovery and ran the recovery.bat, nothing happened and after waiting 30 minutes of waiting for "writing recovery" I unplugged the phone and rebooted it.
I tried again and failed again. So I panicked a bit and selected _Factory Reset_ in the Boot Menu and now the phone wont even boot any more.
How can I get out of this mess?
Let me note the following things:
-In Fastboot mode the phone says unlocked in the top line
-When I try to run the recovery.bat again I get a _<waiting for device>_ prompt.
I would greatly appreciate on how to fix this.
cheers, akilaki
Have u turned usb debugging to on before running the bat file? If not go in settings--->manage apps---->development and tick usb debugging!

You shouldnt have factory reset the phone after unlocking the bootloader.... this creates a bootloop. Anyways, are you still able to access the CWM recovery??

In the original tutorial, there was no mention of a CWM recovery.
Gathering from reading, are supposing that I should try to flash the CWM recovery.img onto the phone via fastboot command?
Tried to flash the CWM recovery.img and that is the result I got:
-fastboot flash recovery cwmrecovery.img
->sending 'recovery'
->OKAY (0.871s)
->writing 'recovery'
and then nothings happens. No OKAY, on indication of finishing, no indication of activity or completion even after waiting some minutes.
Then I chose Reboot from the phone menu
and got the following message:
->FAILED (status read failed (Unknown error))
->finished. total time 698.061s
Any pointers, what might go wrong?
Try TWRP.

The problem was my Windows Installation. I used my XP virtual machine (on an iMac) for the whole procedure. When everything else failed I hooked the phone up to a Windows7 machine and voila, the phone booted into recovery.
So actually the flashing of the recovery was successful after all ...
Thanks to everybody for all the pointers in the thread.
Flash again with same rom
after flashing do clear/wipe data
that is very important which prevents any boot loop

[Q] stuck in boot loop / pc not recognizing phone with adb

Hi,
I tried to install a ROM but it got stuck on the white screen with the HTC logo. I tried to do factory reset but it gets stuck again. I don't have clockwork recovery, and I rooted my phone using adb and ace recovery, which is not on my phone. I only temporarily used it to flash my rom, stupid I know. :-/ When I connect my phone to the PC it is not being recognized. I tried putting the PD98IMG.zip file on my sd card but it just says that it the image is incorrect. Is there anything I can do? Is this fixable?

I just went through some similar stuff. What type of computer are you using? PC/Mac? Are you using the original cable? What troubleshooting steps for connectivity have you done? Different cable? USB port?
Can you access the bootloader screen when you pull the battery and reboot while holding the volume button down and holding the power button? By accident, I found that the phone and PC will communicate with each other when "Fastboot" is selected on the bootloader screen (you should hear a connection chime and it should change to "Fastboot USB") except I could only get fastboot commands to work. The good news is that should be enough to flash a boot or whatever else you need to get back in business.

That's great you're getting the fastboot usb message! As long as you're not using a hub or some other usb extender, any functioning usb port on the pc will do. Again, I learned this by accident (ie the hard way) and found that in this mode, only fastboot commands will work, not adb. (on a side note, and others should correct me here, adb and fastboot work together when the phone is rebooted normally or in recovery but not in the bootloader screen)
Great test for connection: fastboot devices (if you get anything else except a serial # with fastboot after it, then close the cmd window, unplug, and pull battery/reboot to bootloader), fastboot reboot-bootloader. Once it reboots back into the bootloader screen, make sure you press the power button while fastboot is selected and you should again hear the chime and see fastboot usb come up. This is your phone saying it's ready to accept your fastboot commands.
Do let us know how it works.

Flash a rooted stock ROM from recovery. Whether you have root is in your system partition. Whether your bootloader is unlocked is in your bootloader. Whether you have a custom recovery is in your recovery partition. Three separate things.

I'm guessing that you're trying to flash a PD98IMG.zip or a RUU. You need an actual stock rooted ROM, probably from here on the forum. Or just flash Android Revolution HD, an optimized rooted stock ROM, also from here on the forum in the development section. For more specific steps read the Ace Think Tank linked in my signature.

ok, got it. Thank you again
Dear friends,
I have this problem: I got a brand new TCL S720 and the Google Play did not work, being a known rom issue. So, before doing anything, I've managed to make a backup of it's original rom with MTK Droid tools whichI supose it did it well. Then I've tried to install a CWM recovery to try a custom rom for it. The CWM recovery seemed to install succesfully but I didn't manage to install the new rom. If I remember well, it stucked on boot logo. Then tried to revert at it's original stock recovery, managed to have the phone back as it was in initial state, but doing more tries, It remained stucked on boot logo. The problem is that my computer doesn't recognise it anymore, when I connect it to USB it tries to install MTP usb driver but even before the driver was installed well, now it refuse to install, like the driver is not good or the proper driver doesn't exist. So the only thing I can do is to boot on stock recovery but even I tried to copy the original rom update.zip on external SD and to flash the phone using install update from sd card in recovery mode, It doesn't find the external sd card. So I'm stuck here, the computer doesn't detect the phone to try flashing it with SP flash tool or MTK Droid tool, and I also can't flash it from sd card. Have you any idea how to make it work again?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Stuck in "FASTBOOT MODE - NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG"

My NExus S is stuck on the screen that says:
Fastboot Mode No Boot or Recovery IMg.
Product Name - Herring
HW Version - Rev34
Bootloader Version - D720SPRKC5
Baseband Version - D720SPRLCI
Carrier Inro - SPR
Serial Number 32300E25C33500EC
Lock State - Locked
options to select
Reboot Bootloader (gives me exact same screen) except it only says "Fastboot"
Reboot Back to the "FASTBOOT MODE - NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG"
Recovery (Can boot to CWM but I can't mount anything)
Power OFF (That works fine)
Then the little green man and the android logo
Followed by USB Control INIT
USB Control INIT End
STANDARD_SET_CONFIGURATION
Conventional wisdom says download some files and fix via fastboot. However in fastbootI can't run ANY of the steps without running FASTBOOT OEM UNLOCK. When I run it my phone asks if I really want to unlock the bootloader. when I choose YEs and hit power it just freezes there.
My next thought Boot to recovery and restore. A restore through recovery followed by a reboot leads me back to the original no boot or recovery img.
Okay I'll just sideload a working rom by mounting usb storage. Then I can flash it with CWM and be up and running.
but when I try to do mount the USB Storage I get "E:Unable to write to ums 1unfile (No such file or directory)"
Finally, Last ditch Effort, I'll load up ODIN and use that to put on a working recovery. there's forums all over the place explaining how to do that right? Well yes, but the links to the Tar file are all broken.
What next my friends? I'd really like to get this phone working.

what about just using adb? Can you find it when you type fastboot devices? If so there's a command in fastboot to reboot to recovery I think.
I on the other hand am screwed. I read in another forum that it hangs on unlock because the internal memory is fubar.

Solution for me:
1. Turn device on into Bootloop
2. Connect it via USB (PC founds it)
3. type in CMD "adb reboot recovery"
4. device is in recovery
5. reflash everything i wanted :good:
Requirement is a working Android-SDK!

Hmm. so you probably need to flash a recovery first.
then you will be able to use the recovery to mount usb and put a new rom on your "sd card"
Then you can flash the rom on your new recovery and don't forget to fastboot flash the boot.img.
edit: the all in one toolkit is great for things like this. It will put a new recovery on your phone with just a click of the button.

I just edited my original post. just in case you didn't know how. I guess I was a little slow.
Also I can't remember if a bootloader factory reset relocked your phone but you might want to check that too. up on top it would say locked or relocked. If it still says unlocked you don't have to do that step again. Like you did when you first rooted the phone.
(all in one tool kit is great for unlocking and relocking too) just put a copy of that bin file in all in one tool kit (data file i believe, but it says what to do in that thread)

Your phone is an s3?
My phone is an S4 as are I would guess the majority of users. I think the s3 is the international version. If you are on T mobile then it's a s4.
Ok,,,
so .... if your phone is an s3 version then you will have to check that the Rom you download is specific for your phone as most of the Roms on this site are for the s4 version.
you need to go to your recovery. press the volume down button and hold it. Then press the power button (don't hold it). That will get you to recovery.
when in twrp recovery you will see a mounts button. hit that then the next screen will have mount usb. then you will be able to move a rom you downloaded on your computer to your phone.
then you can install the rom zip in twrp.
then from your computer, I assume you know how to flash a boot.img
put a boot.img in your fastboot folder, open up a comand prompt.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if you wanted a different recovery than you are using, find the download the recovery. *I would rename the recovery to recovery.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(I only mention a different recovery because in some of the Rom threads you might read that you can only install a particular rom with an older version of twrp.)
I'm not sure of your skill or experience with all of this. If you are very new to it (then you are probably really frustrated) have no fear there is a little bit to learn but not that much. Just keep reading the development thread and the guides in it.

do you have your box the phone came in?
Z520e is S4
Z560e is S3
So were you able to put twrp on your phone? when you are in boot loader and click on the recovery does it take you to twrp? Yes the all in one toolkit will flash a recovery for you. but you have your boot loader unlocked first.

what will the next step be? (if i need anything please could you leave a link)
thanks for all the help starting to feel i might win lol
in twrp when you press "mounts" then press "mount usb", does your computer finally see your phone?
I was looking at your first post, you say that you rooted and flashed your phone. What do you mean by that? Did you download a ROM and attempt to flash it? Or did you "fastboot flash boot boot.img"?
If you are able to access your phone via computer it is as simple as downloading a rom on your computer moving it to your phone then in twrp "install from zip". Then fastboot flash the boot.img.

if you are just fed up and want your phone back to stock then you will need to run an RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2094414
To run a RUU you would need to relock your bootloader.
in console type "fastboot lock oem" or use your all in one toolkit to relock it.
if that fails you will need to put your stock recovery back. (you need to have boot loader unlocked to do this)
on the clockworkmod recovery page the stock recovery is the second download link.

Do you know how to FASTBOOT FLASH boot.img which is present inside the ROM.ZIP?
Try wiping data, cache, dalvik. Then reinstall.

NEXUS 5 stuck at Google logo

Hi Guys,
After some cleanup in CMW i accidently format EVERYTHING. (formatted all single option in CMW, afterall a bad idea) So now i'm stuck at the google logo.
Now i have the 4.4.4 KTU.zip on my computer. Can i flash this via ADB sideload (as a renamed ''update.zip''? Or can i just copy the .zip file to my Nexus from a computer?
I'm @ work so i;m stuck guessing what i must do to get this thing work!
Thanks in advance guys
i dont know what it is, but if its a rom, sideload then flash away. your phine is empty right now, no rom or anything. you need to put something into your phone(sideload) then flash it.
Yes, the whole zip file is the stock ROM in a zip file.
Luckely i can't login as administrator here or else i could get my device working here
Thanks!
Why not just start the bootloader (fastboot mode) and execute the flash-all.bat? It'a the 'official' way to completely restore your phone. I've done it several times and it always worked great

get the factory image here, unzip it, and run the flas-all.bat. make sure fastboot works correctly. it will flash your phone back to stock.
