OMG! - Say goodbye to Apple and others - Mozilla phone - General Topics

I just saw a video of a phone that is truly revolutionary and unbelievable. It's a concept of a Mozilla phone that if produced, could spell the end of others.
http://gizmodo.com/5824729/mozillas-making-a-cellphone-os-based-on-android

i saw this a year ago, thought the video would be a joke.. lol.
i wish this phone would happen xD

I want it.

i want one too looks veery nice the screen is maybe 3mm off the bottom...
but can it top the sgs2?

The concept is amazing o.o. I wonder if it can be produced in the current age. Even if it can, it'll probably cost a hell lot >.<. Maybe in a few years to come, it will be possible to produce on a large scale.
If even one prototype of this phone exists right now...I WANT IT!! =O!!

Hehe it looks very nice!
But by the time it "might be" out.. I think we will have better ones..

Hummm I'll pass.

Everything I saw is here today and just waiting to be implemented. The virtual keyboards have been here for a while now. The only difference there is coding a different style for projecting out of the sides. The mini-projector is here and in use today. The induction dock is a common Palm Pre item.
Everything I saw I know can be done right now. But the cost might be a bit restrictive.

It wont all fit in such a tiny package though.

I have seen this before as well, and I hope that this phone becomes a reality!

This junk is like 2 years old. It was never intended for actual production. Once again, Gizmodo is just grasping at smoke for bull**** stories.

Not only Gizmodo, then. Engadget is in on the game. I think the whole deal is more about the mobile OS than it is the concept phone. In all likelihood, the phone is just to show what the OS has plans of being able to do. Stuff like the projecting keypads is revolutionary enough for Apple to to raise an eyebrow in a moment of, "Hmmm...why didn't we think of that".
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/26/mozilla-planning-a-chrome-os-like-operating-system-for-phones-an/

Believe it when I see it...

It ok
Well when iphone 5 or maybe 6 comes out this thing will look ugly)

Absolutely amazing concept. I can not wait for this kind of tech to become reality. Welcome to the future!

Neat idea but too much goin on there. Probably would be way too expensive to be mass marketed.

Awesome hardware, too bad the phone itself would be running on something based on android.

shut uppp, that phone would be sick!!

[Q] WebOS Long-term outlook

Hi everyone,
I have an opportunity to buy an HP Touchpad for quite cheap (about $100 for a 16GB wifi) but after doing some research it kind of looks like WebOS is dying. I've had a hard time even tracking down an ereader app, and the only one I've found looks a bit questionable in terms of tablet-optimization. It would be great if I could just install Android on it, but it doesn't look like that's possible. So, basically what I'm wondering is whether WebOS–particularly as a tablet platform–is likely to grow and improve very much, or is it really as dead-in-the-water as it looks? I know you guys might be a bit biased, but I figure you also have much better knowledge of the OS than I do .

Just check this and tell me by yourself if the tablet is dead... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202444
Also you can check at precentral Forum at Touchpad section and you will find everything about the HP Touchpad overthere.
WebOS has the full support of HP.
dont listen to the haters out there, remember when android first came out.
Everyone said "they will never make it, apple has the market locked up" and now look @ the market share android controls. Remember that the TP, VEER and Pre3 are first gen HP WebOS devices. Palm is gone along with the hardware. The WebOS ecosystem will be a major player in the enterprise market and consumer as well.
Unlike WP7, HP makes hardware and that is a huge advantage imop. android is everywhere, but the experience varies by manufacture. HP is creating a family of WebOS products that all have the same great experience and the will talk to each other. I dream of the day when my WebOS refridgerator that is synced with my phone will allow me to answer a call, order pizza, alert me of a text or email and all kinds of things. i know it sounds crazy, but electronics, appliances and cars all synced in one ecosystem would rule!

Man, I feel for you... it's not often someone has the Cajones to show up on a forum days later and say "bow, was I wrong"....
Honestly, I just used my first WebOS device days ago. Not a Touchpad, an original PRE... I can see why it failed.... and why it had promise. The device was neat, but too quirky. I got it set up and working for a friend, and actually usable thanks to the folks over at webos internals...
Now, as far as HP's closing of the WebOS unit.. and their promise to monetize it.... In the current mobile tech climate, it's BLATANTLY OBVIOUS why they did this.
They JUST realized that WebOS/Palm is worth more as a patent portfolio than as any actual production. Expect one of two outcomes shortly:
1) Lawsuits...
or
2) Portfolio Bidding War...
Both strategies are going to earn HP enormously more shareholder value than continuing to struggle along. Though, I hear echos of Monty Python's "'Tis but a Flesh Wound" and "I'm not dead yet!" in the distance. Good lord, look how long it took Amiga or OS/2 to die.

i know but if it wants a good system of its own rather than suckering up to microsoft as it has, then this is a good opportunity, since it's abandoned a really good system like Meego aswell
I think Nokia is dead in the water. They are not that great with updating OSes.
Take symbian for example. Nokia taking up WebOS would be like tying 2 anchors together.
LOL, reading this thread makes me giggle. It's funny how people are saying webOS is alive and kicking and then all of a sudden HP throws it away.
Very unexpected and tragic. But with android and iOS dominating everything, it was a matter of time.
I wouldn't take HP's action today as a referendum on WebOS. As a matter of fact, WebOS is the one thing that they are holding on to. What they are dropping is their entire consumer product line. That's all tablets, desktops, and laptops. They sold half a billion dollars worth of product in that division last year, but the margins are too small and the risk is high with so much competition. This is about much more than lackluster sales for WebOS products (which haven't even been on the market for six months).
The question is, if HP's not building WebOS hardware, who is?

Not a snowball's chance. None of the carriers wanted it, that's why only Orange in the UK offered it.
All of the US carriers smelled bad news earlier this year; Sprint publicly announced that they were done with webOS. Verizon, TMobile and ATT didn't even bother to make a statement.
As a 15 yr Palm fanatic, it's a sad end to Palm. Wonder what we'll see next from Jeff Hawkins and team? He did lead the design of the first iPad back in 1989, manufactured by Samsung and sold as the GRiDPad.
mourning Touchpad demise
i bought a touchpad 13 days ago from staples. 32gb for $399! it was a steal. I wasn't sure about keeping it or not but the more i read, the more i believed that HP would see this project (webOS) out to success, that they would continue to develop an amazing operating system. but after today's news it was a no brainer not to keep my TP. Luckily Staples offers a 14 day return policy so i returned that sucker post haste! im still pretty peeved though, in those 13 days i really came to love webOS. oh well this is what i get for turning my back on android. any good suggestions for android tablets?
Hp is dropping webos, but it should be possible to get android running on the touchpad via the same methods they got ubuntu running on it. What would be better would be webos on my dinc2 but alas...

Android R.I.P. - The Grips of Jobs' Dead Hands

Android, and every other touchscreen OS, (besides iOS) you might as well say goodbye to...
Apple now has the power to destroy Android, Windows Phone, and any other iOS Touchscreen Competitor... Steve Jobs wins this round (for now anyways...)
How long before Apple has the S3 Pulled? This is the top iPhone competitor besides the DROID RAZR Series, with the S3 far ahead...
Check this out:

This could spell the end for Android and this phone, and I will not be a happy camper if I can't upgrade because of Apple... I will throw a major tantrum!
Google, act & appeal fast and fix this mess!!!!
Comments, Thoughts, Last Wishes?
I am not saying this will happen, but is quite possible if the government doesn't block Apple in their tracks from doing so... (I think once Google Appeals, these parents will be made standard for touchscreens...)

If this ever happens i would rather go back to a flip phone or have none at all. I would never give apple any of my money.
I refuse to get an Apple device, but this won't effect available devices in stock or on eBay, so good Android devices will be very rare if this goes the way Apple wants... I'll tell you one thing, eBay prices for Android Devices will go sky high.... (used or not...)
Edit: I miss flip phones anyways, so I'll go old school if I have to...
i have an ipad, and this makes me want to smash it. Apple, you do not own the world, you were not the first to create a "list" on an electronic device. If your so afraid of Samsung, then just build a darn phone with a bigger screen, i wont buy it, but tons of other people would. Fair competition is good for business, it keeps ingenuity alive and keeps engineers pushing the limits of what can be done. Competition is THE ONLY REASON we have the superphones we have now. If apple owns all the rights to make anything that even resembles a smartphone, we will have the iphone 4s renamed and sold as a new product for the next decade.
Whoever the judge is that granted that patent, is an idiot.
it will never happen. Nothing to add.
Well some of what this says they currently have rights to like list view is bs because before the first iPhone was released I was able to use list view on Windows mobile for years. So unless I've miss read, something isn't right or maybe my aging memory is wrong.

Android is here to stay. Google and samsung have some pretty good lawyers too. It's total BS that this kinda stuff even goes on. The only people getting rich on this are the lawyers. If they were smart, they'd sit across from each other at a conference table and make a truce and move on.
Now that Jobs is dead, it's just a matter of time before Apple slips into irrelevance. Nobody there has the passion he had about his company, and nobody is gonna defend it like he did.
That 40 billion they have will be squandered away on bogus patent law suits. Money that could have been spent on more cutting edge development. Everybody knows that patents are crap. Your better off not even applying for a patent and get the thing to market first. By the time they figure out what you did, you come up with something new. A patent application is an invitation and a headstart for everybody else to steal your idea. The company thats ahead of the development curve, and gets it to market fast and furious, makes the money.
Boo hoo...they stole my idea:crying:
Apple is a joke. This is what happens when they feel threaten by a competitor. I will give it to Apple the iPhone was a brake through, but since then Android came out and is user friendly with developers willing to make the devices better and faster more customizable. Making the Android OS just better period. Apple needs to realize there are other players in this game so step up as Android HAS. They know Android IS the future and their scared they will be left behind. Lol I laugh a Apple, I'm going to tell them like I do any young kid with a bad attitude grow up.

Is Samsung fighting a losing battle?

First off, I searched the forums to see if anybody has really discussed what seems to be a one-sided trial and I haven't really found anything. So I ask this question because I am a little confused on the matter...
If you have been following the news lately, you would see that the samsung vs. apple case has begun. Barely two days into it samsung releases evidence of designs that predate the iphone which look kind of similar. Apparently this "key" evidence was rejected by Judge Koh on the basis that it is irrelevant. You can google search the facts about this but here is one link http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2407919,00.asp
Now, I am no legal expert and just taking a quick glance and seeing the evidence and hearing that it was rejected by the judge makes no sense right now. It angered me to think that samsung wasn't given a fair chance to provide evidence that seems clearly relevant to why this whole trial is even taking place. But I figured I should withhold judgment until I learn all the facts because like I said, I am no expert on legal matters and I know there is two sides of the story.
My question is, is there a good reason as to why the judge threw evidence out like this? A lot of people are claiming the judge is being payed by apple but I'm not going to quickly jump to that conclusion. I am wondering if there are any fellow xda people out there that have some experience in law or know a lot about this case and can elaborate as to why this has happened. I want to know if it is unfair to jump to the assumption that apple is somehow pulling strings behind the scenes.
I'd prefer people with a decent amount of knowledge in this case speak up and not people who have read a few articles and think they know all about it.
If it's one thing I'm really starting to learn, it's that all these tech sites seem to have a bias towards them. I see some sites blatantly ignoring and even sometimes lying about android and it's features, usabillity, etc. So I'd rather get advice, experience, opinions from people who at least know what they're talking about.
Update Now Apple is asking for judge to punish samsung for releasing public documents to the press
http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...amsung_for_releasing_documents_in_iPhone_suit
I'm pretty sure that evidence was thrown out because it was entered too late by Samsung (there's a cut-off date after which no new evidence may be entered for consideration, since both parties must get some time to go over it and decide how to deal with it).
But yeah, unfortunately I think Samsung is gonna get screwed on this one. Apple seems pretty good at deceiving juries and judges (especially certain ones) into believing that they invented everything in existence. I just hope it doesn't end too badly for Samsung, as their phones are probably the biggest reason why Android has risen up as a viable competitor to iOS (and even raced right past it in market share). The smartphone world needs that competition. I shudder at the thought of a world where the only real choice is getting an iPhone.

Ahhh, I see. Well that makes sense if it there's a deadline and they didn't make it. I will say that I find it pretty strange that they didn't make the deadline with evidence that seems to be pretty damn important.
There are time limits, thought it can still be allowed if it wasn't discovered quickly enough to be submitted. Regardless, every decision made seems to point to clear bias on the point of Koh and higher judges. I've yet to see anything fair and impartial about what's been going on with any of this from the beginning.

Yeah... Richard Posner seems to be one of the only sensible ones. Quoting The Guardian:
The Guardian said:
At one point, for example, Apple claimed that Google was infringing one of its patents on the process of unlocking a phone by swiping the screen. "Apple's argument that a tap is a zero-length swipe," said Posner, "is silly. It's like saying that a point is a zero-length line."

Yeah, if they actually manage to ruin Android (I don't believe they will), I'll go for a Windows Phone a million times before I even look at an iPhone. I never used to actively dislike Apple, I just wasn't very interested in their products, but recently they've really made me think they're a ****ty anti-competitive company that doesn't deserve a cent of my money. I've kind of feel the same. I never really liked apple, although I know they make good products. After lots of research and hands on experience, I've realized iOS sucks compared to android. All it has is smoothness. Android has far more features and is simpler to use in my opinion. What apple really is good at is hype. After all these lawsuits with them suing everybody for what seems like ridiculous things, it's making me really hate the company now.

This thought has passed through my mind to be honest
However I don't think any of this is as simple as "Apple is American" or "bribery".
It's a broken patent system that Apple is using to try and prolong the inevitable - which is Android taking over the majority of the market for what could be decades. Apple is within their rights to attempt to use their patent portfolio to slow down the competition. This is not debatable. They are using legal means and the current system to attempt to enforce their dominance since they can no longer maintain it with product alone.
Although I am a Samsung fan and a huge supporter of Linux, Android, Google, etc. I cannot get past the picture of the Galaxy SII next to the iPhone. Side by side, it does look like they ripped them off. That is where I believe Samsung screwed up. It's not the functionality/UI patents that are troubling to me, it's the fact they made it look like the iPhone. It's almost undeniable. They encroached on brand recognition, to the point that you can't deny they look very similar. Too similar.
In my opinion, that will be the cause of Samsung's defeat. Everyone says "you can't patent rectangles or the color spectrum". But you can't rip off someone's design either. And they did, pretty plainly IMO. Why do you think there are no Black GSIII's? Samsung knows what they did, and they didn't want to risk it with their new flagship.
As far as software patents, Apply can kiss my ass. But they have the right for their product to look unique. No matter who designed something similar back in the day. No one sees a black, rectangular phone with a huge slab of glass and says "hey, that's that Sony phone prototype!". But any average person, even an elderly person who doesn't much follow tech, definitely recognize an iPhone. Unless of course, it's next to a black Galaxy SII.
Just my two cents.

Samsung didn't copy the iphone though, they actually had iphone like designs the year before iphone was made public.
Are you saying that because apple used that design in public first, even though samsung had a very similar one earlier, that apple should be only one able to have anything similar "no matter who designed something similar back in the day"?

It's the phone itself in combination with the dock, square icons, general "appearance" I'm taking about. I'm sorry but it's really not debatable. It looks like a foreign clone of an iPhone.

If worse comes to worst you know we'll just all switch to buying Chinese android devices. The Chinese system not only ignores Apple's chicanery, but has ruled in favor of several plaintiffs against Apple and allows the phones that truly are copies to be sold freely. I don't in any way foresee it coming to that but it will be a long, long time before Apple ever sees dollar one of my money and I will do whatever I can to keep an Android device in my hands.

You're not getting this. Samsung has shown (to the best of my knowledge the evidence that was tossed by Judge Koh, was legit from Samsung), that they had prior art to this style of design, the apps, the home button, the rounded corners, well before Apple ever went public with the iPhone.

[Q] [OffTopic] Why do I hate...

I began thinking this yesterday and I don't know if it's because I just can't knock sense into people's skulls, or if they are so ignorant to take my advice.
I HATE iPhone buyers/fanboys(some people have to use them for work.)
I have this person who asked me if I saw the gathering of mindless idiots yesterday (I'm paraphrasing) I said yes but then he (a current iPhone user) told me he was buying it because it's "sexy" I proceeded to tell him the spec bump from the 4s was minimal and that it has nothing on the top current Android phone. He then proceeded to tell me he doesn't care and he's still going to buy it anyway. Please help me understand this? Now I don't know if it is that I don't get where he's coming from or if he's just a darn idiot.
I understand and am in complete agreance that if you use Macs at home apple is a good way to go for you. BUT he doesn't... He is a sheep.
Now on to my point... I hate apple... Not only hate, but I'd love to see Apple fail miserably (not the people employed, but the company and the ones that call the shots) just one time I want to see a tech blogger ask questions like, "How confident and how do you feel about your product entering the market while your competition is beating your current specs?" or one of them yell out "WOW YOU MINIMALLY INCREASED 4 SPECS AND AN OS UPDATE FU**ING BRILLIANT!!!" My very own cousin and brother in law are trapped with the sheep.
My brother in law called me and asked me what I thought... I ended up hanging up on him in utter frustration because he failed to listen... It's like he can't wait to throw money at them...
That's not all though, the technology bogs even call it brilliant... And they won't shut the fu## up about it... Dude its got a sapphire lense (watch faces are made out of this...) Dude its optics are precision aligned (how the fu$$ else do you expect to take pictures if your optics aren't aligned with precision?) and everyone eats it up.
Here lately I feel really smart... But I also can't stand to talk to idiots who are the iPhone sheep.
I could go into Apples patent hungry team and using them as weapons but we all know that.
Why am I this way? What can I do to ensure I can coexist with these dumb heads? Any advice before I go insane? Am I in the wrong? Should I be on something? I'm literally at my last nerve and am about to deck someone the next time the word iPhone comes out their da*n mouth.
Thanks in advance,

LOL! Sounds like someone has Apple issues. JK.
I personally hate iPhone as well and their users love it and I can never understand. Grr
I have 2 MAC Pro's in the house and 2 HP Beat's laptops I like their MAC's (other than that forget it) Honestly I don't see why anyone would buy the i5 when they have an i4 already.
Looks the same doesn't know anything more than the i4. The only reason I see people getting it for a reason is if they want to rock on Verizon's awesome 4G LTE since other carrier's 4g still su*k
Honeslty the i4/5 (same thing) has nothing on the GS3. Our phones beat the crap out of them any day or night oh don't make me forget anytime!
(oh and what you said that iphone users don't listen geeezz your so right have the same problem & it makes me mad as hell since I've been dealing with cell phones ever since I was 12yrs old lol)
Ive owned iPhones. They are good phones, but not what the fanboys make out of them. Id never own one again, not my cup of tea.
Funny vid out there of fanboys given iPhone 4S's and were told the were iPhone 5's. They bought the story. idiots they are!
Ill stick to my androids

yes this is one of them lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdIWKytq_q4&feature=youtube_gdata_player
"Sexy"?
The phone has been elongated slightly in one dimension and is thinner, with slightly bevelled edges that look mechanical more than fluid to me. Contrast this with the fluid look and feel of a S3, for example. The iPhone 5 still just a (patented) rounded rectangle. "Sexy"?
iOS6 is certainly an improvement, but it's otherwise still (mostly) just a bunch of icons in a matrix format. Yeah, I can see how that would get someone moist.
- ooofest
i figured itout the other day talking to some firends when they asked me about my phone.
i showed them roms i had, different icons, widgets, etc.
they had NO interest in any of that. they use their phones for games, making calls, texting and going on facebook. they dont want or need any other features. They loved it. thought it was cool, but no interest
thats the AVERAGE consumer. the people here arent average consumers.
and thats where the line is drawn. if you werent technlogically sound, didnt find the need to open a laptop wouldnt you want to have your ipod and phone together? Its maketed to the mass public. and it meets their needs. They dont need to have a quad core processor. Their customer base wont know or care what that is.
Here is what it is. If you take an old android phone and ask apple to put their logo on as "iphone6" on it then sell it. It's going to sell like cup cakes. The moral of the story is. Iphone fan boys are PUPPETS= NO BRAINERS=LOW IQ.=YOUNG TEENAGERS=OLD FARTs. End of discussion.
Whoaho. Buddy I am a young teenager and I feel your pain. But not all teenagers r like an isheep. Now 99% of teenage girls. Yes. Yes they r. They don't care about specs and all. They know apple is the cool thing and so they fork over their parents money to get one. Now I must admit teenagers r much more prown to falling into the isheepiness. I was once one. I thought my ipod was the thing. It was perfect! But then I found out about jail breaking and all that put a horrid android skin on it and loved android. Now I was like 12 and ever since thirteen always been android. Samsung galaxy s3 and nexus 7.
IPhone are girl phones. I usually only see girls with them. But they're great for older people that want a smart phone, or someone that wants something simple.

Er, I don't like to classify most things with the schoolyard "boy" and "girl" label from a cultural perspective, and easily see as many males as females with iPhones.
I do agree that for people not in touch or interested in technology, thetedious, foolproof (i.e., dumb) iOS interface with a single button has a degree of attraction.

Haha, I like that explanation a lot better. I was looking at it from an iFan's POV I guess, thinking about how the same commercial shows lack of creativity = copying apple.
Which leads me to the question, if apple's supposed to be all about innovation, creativity, and new ideas, what's up with republishing the same device every year with only like three new features?

Dude, if you had the following that Apple does, that is all they need to release to get most of the people to upgrade. Their stock went thru the roof due to this phone coming out on Friday. Besides, only including a couple of features make it easy on them. I would be willing to bet my last dollar that there is an iPhone 6 already being tested with a few new features.
I wouldn't have one of their iPhones personally, but, I do own a MacBook Pro. It is a great machine but still overpriced IMHO.

Heck yeah, I am sure there is already an iPhone 6 with NFC and simultaneous voice and LTE on Sprint and Verizon. Apple does not need to do anything for the next year except collect money from the puppets and watch to see what other great things Android will come up with to put in the iPhone 6s.
Also, the reason no one can sue Apple and win is because then the jury and judges won't be able to buy their own iPhone 5 and why would they want to ruin their own lives like that.
I actually think Apple was really nice to their customers this time around. They could have sold millions of iPhones with only adding the new super thunder and lightning digital cable and the super mini sim card. Look at all the other features they threw in on top of that. You go on with your bad self Apple!
iPhone owners are some lucky SOB's! They can even see 5 days in their calendar app now. If that was me I would have saved that feature for the iPhone 6. Apple is way to nice.
Hah! They got the whole 4 inches of Apple's... generosity.

I am reading articles of how innacurate Apple's mapping program is, but they say it does look pretty.
Isn't that what Apple is all about, making things pretty but keeping them dumb?
Plus, isn't pretty and dumb something every guy wants in a phone? Now we know why Apple is so succesfully! They have found the key to success. Make a phone like a typical guy wants his women. lol
And then why do the women buy the phone, well becuase they can relate. haha

It's not sad, It's genius... It can be red at so many levels it's not even funny!
First of all they are passing the message that one year later things haven't changed... same Apple fanatics, same Apple's company policies and strategies, same crappy ass backward products.... while Samsung keeps coming up with high quality and technologically advanced products...
Another message you can read if you will is that Samsung focuses on improving their phones instead of focusing on making new commercials.....
It is not usually a good idea to recycle a commercial... there are some exceptions... this is one.
Awesome
Not funny, but makes me wonder what the iphone 5 uses for glass...
