I just got off the phone with a very nice lady from t-mobile executive care and she told me that the official update just got to them last Wednesday and after hearing about all my problems she offered me a G2x with the software update on it and she said it would be here by the end of the week. So T-mobile is rolling out the software update soon she told me and I was so shocked she would even tell me this information. A weird part though is she said she could do the multiple exchange for the G2? That was pretty weird haha
duno man... too many stories thus far
well
well i hope she was right because I am receiving the new g2x this week with the update
No one is going to believe you. The only thing you can do is post screens of the software version etc. once the phone arrives.
Which is really a shame, because after all of this hoopla, we still have no gingerbread kernel, no nvidia drivers, and no lg camera application...and if what we have right now ends up being the official gingerbread update for our phone from t-mobile, then we really don't have much more to hope for.

Lets hope that she is right and the real update is going to be out. Hopefully this leak isn't another reason to stall it. Am I the only one who thinks the LG camera app was a culprit here? you cant advertise a phone with 1080p recording then remove it in an update because you couldn't get it to work anymore.

It just seems unlikely to me, if LG put out an update that does NOT include their very own camera application, that T-mobile will include the LG camera. And the overall attitude I'm getting for various representatives at T-mobile is that of "take it or leave it." I'm getting the feeling that they are already taking a defensive stance and we pretty much have the best that we're going to get out of them.
We are on our own.
.
well if you dont believe it dosen't bother me at all because i know what she told me and when t-mobile sends me the official gb update on the replacement i will upload pics and vids for everybody to see because many people think its still far and i just wanted to share the info i got
anybody notice that in the pic on this page http://www.tmonews.com/2011/07/t-mo...en-shot-2011-07-25-at-4-18-29-pmwtmk0000wtmk/ it say's "the other cool stuff is still there" and it mentions 1080p video recording?
so, maybe, v21e is not "official"?

I believe you...I just say, "who cares" about an official T-mobile update? We already have the update. And unless something miraculous happened at T-mobile over the past 5 days, then this "official" update is going to be the same that we have...do you think they re-wrote LG's code? They got sent the update for testing...if they are releasing it 5 days later, then it's a pretty good bet that there were no changes to the test update.
Of course, I've been wrong about plenty in my life. But my prediction: "official update" will be the same garbage that the "unofficial" (which was "officially" released by LG already) is, with no LG camera, and no GB kernel.

then that would be false advertising because the specs are listed as 1080p video recording. or does the updated gb record in 1080p? haven't tested yet.
Yeh, I just saw that picture that was linked above my post, and I noticed the 1080 video recording spec listed. I certainly hope that I'm wrong...because I love that LG camera so much more than the aosp version. They are just not even in the same league. But even more important than the camera, would be an updated kernel. Ahhh, what a pleasant fiction.

Who knows...I could have sworn I read a dev post once that even with a new kernel, they would still be handcuffed without Nvidia making their drivers available. But perhaps it would be another little extension to the bridge. For instance, Nvidia might be more willing to make drivers for a GB kernel available AFTER we are actually supposed to have it. Remember, technically, we still don't have gingerbread on our g2x, so there's really no reason for them to do any extra work on that end. But I'm entering an area that I know little about, and the more I type, the more unfounded opinion I'm spewing.

The Atrix has GB and A2DP works (haven't seen any complaints that it doesn't) in addition to it being 2.3.4...so someone over at Nvidia kicked it into high gear and released A2DP drivers and did something to get over the lack of NEON so that they could get FFC video via Gtalk to work. I would be very disappointed if LG didn't incorporate these changes into their GB ROM but if the ROM they "released" is the ROM we're getting...

YOu mean false advertising like the time they posted on their website and claimed the G2X was quad band and worked on at&t and then when the phone was released no one could get it to work.
Ya i wouldn't put it past them to say they are including 1080p in the update only to later say "sorry mistake"

Will the phone get updates from Google or T-mobile?
I'm guessing neither. LG has a desktop app that they push updates through. Unless something's different with the G2X I'd assume they'll come through the LG app.

Hmm. So we could possibly be waiting for LG to do this? That is a potential deal-breaker for me. With pure Google experience and updates we are much more future proof.

You're looking at getting a Nexus S or Nexus One then. For those of us not willing to pay full price, and wanting better hardware, we have to deal with manufacturers instead.

Yeah but the update has to go through tmo first before the release it, the have to make sure their crapware is in there.

What I'm saying is no phone out there but the Nexus S or Nexus One has AOSP Android. Every other phone has a version modified by the manufacturer. Google has nothing to do with these changes. The only one who can release updates is the manufacturer (or service provider if the manufacturer chooses to send the update to them first).
That's just the way it is.
Are you opposed to rooting your phone and installing custom ROMs? If you are interested in that, CM will be your best bet by far as you get the best of both worlds (CM had Gingerbread on even the Nexus One before Google did!).
If you don't want to use unofficial software, you should stick with the Nexus line. Even pure vanilla Android devices get updates through the carriers, that is how it is and how it always will be. Nexus phones are different as they are not sold through the carriers, just designed to work on them. They are managed entirely through Google which means updates come from Google.

Just because they have the update for the O2x by June, doesn't mean the G2x will be ready. The two use different software, plus there are different expectations I think between the US market and European. I hope they come together, but I wouldn't be surprised if LG does the O2x first and then gets working on the G2x.

It's not AOSP vanilla, but it's the closest you will get to it without buying a Nexus phone. There's lots of little tinkering to the OS on the LG2x. For example there's a "DTS" button in the music player to enable dts sound. Also, there's the T-Mobile motto when you drag down the status bar. There's a "tethering may incur charges" warning when you turn on wifi hotspot. There are different notification and ringtones put in. Etc etc. If you put this phone next to a Nexus phone, you will see lots of little differences beyond just the T-Mobile bloatware installed.

Not sure where, but I read from one of the CM guys (I think, don't kill me) that it's not AOSP at all! It's actually that same O2X ROM themed to look like AOSP Froyo

actually this makes sense.
1) people who have said their phones said there was an update after phone rebooted .. this has been mentioned several times so that part makes sense.
2) you are the second person from a different source today to mention an update for next week.
obviously its probably just getting to tmobile next week but at least thats something.
Let us know how it goes. if you dont see an internal update by next week than well know thats its probably not trust worthy. but what he said makes sense regarding the update stuff.

I can say my battery life appears to be better, no random reboots yet.
I've also previously experienced what I call hibernate which is where I have to press the power key 12 times to unlock the screen. Seems to run a bit smoother as well.
Problems so far are the camera sucks now. When the screen goes to standby after I load a webpage and I unlock the screen, it reverts to the previous page.
I have had a few occasions where I have had to click a link like 10 times to get data to load the page. That all I've notices so far within the 24 hours I've been running the update.

I agree. Very slow. Now that the hacked camera in CM7 is supporting the higher definitions, I think the only feature that's really missing would be FFC support. Which you can probably find an app for.
I just refuse to flash GB until all the drivers are available and people stop reporting APN issues.

better and worse are relative terms. I had a terrible time with the LG app. Especially when I turned on google+auto upload. Share a pic then try to take another while that one is sending or syncing. It bogs the cam down to a stop. Lag doesn't begin to describe it.
I think I like the AOSP camera better. Just sayin
I'm fine with this camera as well. Lg one took forever
hey guys although i havent find nothing online that said so but a seen a few people talking about it in threats and even a tmobile sales men told me that there suppost to be a another ota for the g2x. some people thinks its gonna be 2.3.4 and have the LG Camera in it?

we have this phone and we just go from there
Well, we're getting ICS either way thanks to Cyanogen... But it would be nice if LG and T-Mobile still showed some love for our phones!
I kind of doubt we will see another OTA update anytime soon but if we do great.
T mobile is all about the Sensation and Galaxy S 2, and LG has had enough if this fiasco of a phone. Cyanogen is the only hope of this ever getting another update, of any flavor.

If the "OTA" is going to be 2.3.4, it's going to be outdated. We've been on 2.3.5<-- for almost 2 months now. (Well, with CM7, EB, Faux123, MIUI, etc.)

Correct, it's just with google on the back of the phone like the G2. Only Google phones made are the nexus line.
Hell will freeze over before this phone gets another official update. If you wont root and update it yourself but are savvy enough to use xda you have no one to blame but yourself.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
The difference is that the devices in the Google Nexus line have their roms developed by Google engineers. Other devices must rely on the respective manufacturer to update them. On the Nexus line Google also pushes out the OTA themselves and never takes them down like T-Mobile did for the G2X. That was lame. Why not keep the OTA on your servers forever like Google does. Plus Google lets anyone get the OTA on any carrier. TMO limited it to people connected to their network (not even MVNOs) only. Since Google does their testing of new versions of Android on their own Nexus line, new roms get pushed out pretty darn fast. Soon, alas, they are going to declare the venerable Nexus One end of life (EOL) and stop providing roms for it. It might get ICS but we'll have to wait and see.
But the G2X is a great phone and the differences between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 are so minimal there is nothing really to be upset about. No O2X worldwide has even gotten any official versions of GB yet, so you can be thankful, for once, that the US is a litigious society and the class action forced LG to release GB before they planned to. But now that they did, any future versions are questionable. LG doesn't have a good record of updating phones very often or very quickly.
i almost got to the point where i was gonna trade my g2x for a nexus s just because its a google phone and i know it will always be updated fast. but its hard to down grade from the g2xs nice specs

I'd much rather keep my G2X, even if it was still on 2.2, rather than trade for a Nexus S. Keep your G2X.

Apparently Straight Talk Wireless is launching the Optimus 2X! One picture shows LG UI (as per O2X) but others show Vanilla Android (as in G2X)...
EDIT: There was some confusion on the version of the 2x that was actually being released. Some materials show the 2x, others show unbranded G2X. Some even said LTE. Looks like it is most likely (98%) going to be the G2X unbranded just like the leaked phone we saw.
EDIT 2: People on HowardForums are claiming to have been told by certain wal-mart managers that they have already received delivery of their "2X" devices.
EDIT 3: There is a review of this version of the phone at http://wontek.com/prepaid-reviews/straight-talk/LG-Optimus-2X-LG-L95G which goes into.. very few .. details. I'm going to attempt contacting the reviewer and see if it has a newer build.
This is GOOD NEWS... It will certainly have at least Android 2.3.4 as per the leak, and has likely had patches/fixes made to the bugs in 2.3.4.
If anybody gets their hot hands on one, and if it is indeed running on T-Mobile's network, ie, a G2X, then we need to get the version info and a system image dump.
It is CONFIRMED that the phone is heading to Straight Talk. What we do not know, is if the build is any newer than the one that leaked.
Please, if anyone gets their hands on one, we need a dump of the system BEFORE it gets flashed over.

Considering we had a leaked phone previously via TracPhone/Straight Talk, this is PROBABLY the G2X.

If it turns out to actually be an O2X, I'd be surprised since our current 2.3.4 Roms came from a Straight Talk leak. If we do get a newer and more stable 2.3.4 from it, I'll be all over that puppy for an update to Tsugi.

From the Phonenews.com link you posted.
Update: After extensive research, it has been confirmed that the model offered is not an LTE enabled version of the Optimus 2X as is being advertised by Straight Talk, rather it is in fact an unbranded version of the US G2X that will be sold by the provider with Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 pre-loaded along with a new series of T-Mobile SIM card that will allow access to the carrier’s HSPA+ network for the phone, with no possibility of swapping current SIMs used on other GSM smartphones such as the E71 and E5 since they only work with AT&T.

Right. I only left the 2% off-chance that it isn't since they don't cite any sources for that "extensive research"... What bugs me is that the "reservation" site at straight talk that apprently listed the 2x for a while now only lists the optimus Q. But reports are that wal-marts have already received the 2x.... we are lacking, however, an actual, real, official announcement from Straight Talk themselves at this point. And, of course, actual hardware with a system image dump we can work on (*IF* it is updated from the leaked version).

"IF" it turns out to be a G2x with 2.3.4, could we just flash a nandroid to ours?

Some porting was necessary on the L95G (the Straight Talk version of the P999) Rom... though once we get an image, that will be trivial to do, not like the P990.
It's very nice to read that ( waiting patiently
YAY YOU ARE STILL STICKING WITH THE G2X!!!! Thank god we have some good developers on the g2x. If you do port it can you some how add the pull down notifications from weapon G2x. The weapon notifications area has alot of useful toggles. I would really love seeing it! Considering weapon is no longer being updated because dev left the G2x.

Well, I'm sticking with it as long as I can't afford a replacement. At this point, I'm either waiting for Magenta to come out with the next great thing (the Blaze 4G is not that), or until both the GSM GN comes down in price and I have the money to afford it.
At the moment, I'm still done with the current crop of 2.3.3/2.3.4 builds. CM is nice, but there are folks with more talent than me working on that. If we get a new 2.3.4 build though from LG I'll certainly take a look at it if I haven't got a new phone by then.
Thank you! And good luck finding another phone. Im sticking with this phone 2 years. Its a shame that the first dual core phone was such a disaster. And just if you diddnt know, you might be able to find good deals on phones from like best buy or costco. I got my g2x for free on contract, I should have waited 2 weeks for the galaxy s2.

So in essence you're saying there's no straight talk from Straight Talk...
Just messin' with ya. I'm sticking with my G2x (and love it), as long as I can use it with my carrier. Still plenty of us G2x lovers around, but you wouldn't know it 'cause the majority of them are just plain enjoying them with stock GB, and they're not members of this forum looking for fixes or ROMs. So for that reason it seems like there aren't many G2x users / owners, but it's just that they're not here looking for anything to fix their phone. It just works and they're enjoying it. Like me!

I just hope both for our sakes, and the sakes of whomever buys that phone, that they fixed a few of the issues present in that build and pushed a newer build.
And suddenly, Net 10?
Same web page format as the Straight Talk reserve page I saw...
Go to reserve dot net10android dot com
Link to a review added.. the reviewer did a horrible job with the "review" though, and didn't even check to see which build of Android it was running just "2.3" which could be 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 and/or have the same build as the previous leak.
if the version it's 2.3.4 we might have lg camera??
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet but I just found this in a random ad.
I'm guessing either way 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 it will have updated LG cam.. our ****ty 2.3.3 with stock cam only does 720p and this ad states 1080p recording...

Wishful thinking if you ask me .... chances are they copied the original marketing info pre-update. It would be a nice surprise, however.
This site says it will be 2.3.4. Who knows how they know though.
