Yea I would tell you why if the forum search was working. You need to make a flashable zip for this to work. Don't remember the reasoning behind it. A zip was posted in one of the cyanogen threads if I recall correctly. Once search is back up I suggest searching for 'adfree' and clicking the "show posts" radio button.

How are you installing busybox? If you haven't already tried this way, install titanium backup, then open titanium and click the "problems" button on the bottom. That will give you the option to install a working version of busybox.

Just go clockworkmod and push hosts file to /system/etc via ADB.
P.S. don't forget mount system first.

I'm on the road and don't have a computer with me, is there a way to root without a computer? Does the visionary method work for this device? Just got today....

Not sure on the visionary method... All I have read on the G2x forums pertains to using a computer.
Visionary only pertains to those HTC devices with that nand-protection You'll need a computer to root
Ok I found one to use today after work... Damn we don't have much development support for this phone...

Well I went and hacked the library computer to allow me to save the app you suggested to my sd. I tried with and without debugging enabled. It just black screened a few seconds in and did nothing. So I'm not sure.
I also tried the same with Z4 again. It would like run and the app would close, unrooted.
Any suggestion to a newbie?

You have to enable usb debugging first to use any rooting app. You can just turn it off afterwards.

I just remembered. My friend has a optimus black running 2.2.2 and he rooted it with gingerbreak. I'm not sure if the optimus s can do the same thing but you can try.

I was rooted....then I did the LG update and flashed Stock 2.3.3 Gingerbread. I wanna go back to Weapon, but RomManager is not opening. Did the update unroot my phone??

LG and almost every other phone manufacturer or service provide don't send out rooted updates. So yes, your phone is no longer rooted.

Superoneclick doesn't work on Gingerbread, I believe. Try flashing a custom recovery from NVFlash.

I've been doing a little bit of reading, and I keep seeing that the G2x Gingerbread 2.3.3 can't be rooted yet? Is this true?

No that's false. Nvflash clockwork and flash the root zip. It will root gingerbread

i have 2.2.2 on my phoenix
Go on the market or your browser and search for an application called 'z4root'. If you're running 2.2.2, it should work like a charm. If it doesn't, also try GingerBreak. These are both great one-click applicatoins that are almost fool-proof rooting tools. GingerBreak (not sure about z4root) also includes a feature to unroot your device as well. Best of luck.
