#xda-developers community for beeing the biggest amount of information and collaboration on Android topics
#Football and all the other guys who made the "shipped roms list" (finally that was the key of success)
was your hboot version 98.2000?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
Nice! What ROM, etc did you go for?
hboot was 0.98.0000, but rom version 1.33.x was not supported by alpharevx.
the solution was using an upper version RUU, then using alpharevx, after that flashing custom rom was easy
Now i'm using LBC Mod 0.5.4 and very happy with it

I'll second that! I'm also new to Android with a Desire S and thanks to AlphaRev and this forum I am finally S-off. Fortunately I unlocked before the OTA update, my hboot was still 0.98.0000 so it was a fairly painless process. I'm also running LBC MOD 0.5.4, although I will also try out a few other roms (like CyanogenMOD and Vituous Unity) before I settle on one. Looking forward to LBC MOD 0.6.0 though!

Two solutions:
1) Don't hold the phone in landscape as problem is much worse when held like this..
2) Achieve S-OFF and install a custom ROM which should have a software fix.
If you need to know what S-OFF then you probably are S-ON. To see how to get S-OFF then use search within forum and google.
Look at other posts before creating a new thread......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036357
i did a research on s-off but could'nt find any topic to show how to s-off the HTC Desire S.
Any resolution for that?

No idea, I'm afraid. I'd also recommend that you don't ask that question in the thread as it will simply annoy the developers who are working on the solution as fast as they can.
It has been shown to work on the Desire S already, but isn't yet released. It's released for other devices which shows that its not vapour ware and is worth waiting for.
and yes I'd suggest waiting a fortnight to a month at least....before contemplating XTC

hi htc desire s fans,
i just bought my device a month ago, and i got crazy when i saw the news that said that desire s will receive htc sense 3.0 and android 3.3.5,but i am sick of waiting, then i saw the guys here talking about installing thesis updates on there devices without waiting for the official update but i can't understand the steps they provide. so if any one can kindly explain in details how to install this updates or refer to a thread with the same topic will be great.
also a brief about the meaning of the custom ROM will be appropriated
thank you guys.
Well i have desire s and android at all one month too. From what i have learnt i can tell you in short: you must do S-off,root your phone and than flash new custom rom with new sence and android. Tutorials are here - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401
I am afraid i cant tell you more, because i am not expert on that, maybe somebody else could

I am not so much advanced and that is why i want to ask if it is possible to do S-On after rootig and flashing new ROM - and of course root and custom ROM would stay. I want to know that for the case i fire eMMC chip on rooted device and in service i would want repair under warranty. You know maybe they just take a look at S-on and say warranty is ok.
So is it possible or is that a nonsence?
Custom rom explained as
Stock ROM
A stock ROM is the version of the phone's operating system that comes with your phone when you buy it.
Custom Rom
A custom ROM is a fully standalone version of the OS, including the kernel (which makes everything run), apps, services, etc - everything you need to operate the device, except it's customized by someone in some way.
So what does the "customized" part mean? Since Android is open source, developers are free to take stock ROMs, modify them, strip them of garbage, optimize them, add things, and pretty much do whatever their imagination and skills allow.
Hello
I'm an owner of a Desire S with 2.3 Gingerbread Rom and I would like to upgrade it to 4.0 ICS.
I understood that HTC released only RUU update that requires booting my phone. I don't have the technical knowledge to do it, and I'm afraid to mess thing up.
HTC sense on android 2.3 doesn't support Hebrew and RTL text, so the networks in Israel aren't selling the device. I bought it from a private store, which booted it (I think) and installed its own ROM (it's actually just the same 2.3 HTC's ROM but with Hebrew and RTL support). So I wonder: if the phone is already been booted, will the installing procedure of the HTC official 4.0 ROM will be easier and won't require the complex process of booting?
What I'm actually asking is will I be able to do it myself without risks? Will it be simple as just installing something? If it is, please explain to me how to do it, from the basics, because I really have no knowledge at the subject.
Thanks you all from advance for your help!
p.s - sorry if I had some grammar mistakes.
Flashing RUU has been discussed just about a million times. Please bother searching.
If you can't find all the answers just by doing a simple search - you shouldn't be touching your phone. Otherwise you have good chances of ending up with a phone that doesn't boot, waiting for answers from the forum that might come - and might not. Because most of the people that are capable of answering these questions, got tired. I definitely did.
P.S. It's rooting, not booting.

Welcome :good: You need to read, read and read some more.
There are some great ROMs out there. If you want stability then stick with a GB-based one for the moment (Reaper for non-Sense and Endymion for Sense). If you want to be a bit more adventurous then try Fallout v5.0, based on the ICS RUU.
TO learn what you are doing - there are plenty of guides out there so make sure you read and understand exactly what you are doing and why before you risk doing anything to your phone.

Thx for kind words of welcome, and just so to let you know i am reading all the beginers guides (not done yet). And at the same time i saw that ICS is officially on this phone now. So i am trying to install it but as it seems i need adb drivers and i have some difficulty finding them on my windows8. I found some for windows 7 but is says unsuported os on win8
UPDATE: grabed my Moms laptop with win7 and started to install this official ICS, but i cant keep doing that every time i need to flash rom (mom would come and turn it off right in middle )

hey there, welcome to the club! if you want great stability and also ICS experience, and don't want to experiment, you can also flash Ice Cream Saga v1. you get the latest HTC stock rom, rooted, with only the most basic tweaks. you can customise it if you wish with amidabudha's tweaked kernel or leave it as it is.

hello, the desire s is a beautiful phone that will give you much satisfaction, I think that the best rom is the fallout 5 and ICE DS 5.0. But made a little culture by reading the forum.
Hello,
First of all, thanks for this great forum, i'm new to android and being here is really helpful.
I've read some of the guides posted, still i'd like to have some tips and infos.
I'm from Italy and my Desire S is still working on Gingerbread (!). I would like to update the firmware, if not to Jelly Bean (since the custom one is still beta, but advise me here), at least to ICS, but i don't know the routine to follow (ROOT, then Flash one of the custom ROMS? Being in S-Off mode is needed i guess). Another thing i don't get is flashing radios..
Help would be really appreciated, THANKS.
There is nothing to tell you that you can't find by reading the stickies and understanding what to do.

If you haven't messed with your phone, i.e. rooted it, flashed any fancy thirty party rom, etc, and the phone is running official HTC ROM and in the exact same state as you bought it, I'd suggest OTA and upgrade to official ICS since you are new to android. Go to setting - about phone then update from there.
If you'd like to try other ROMs then there's plenty guide in this forum already.
Imo official 4.0.4 is a bad idea.
1) It has bugs
2) hboot 2.02 cannot be downgraded without htcdev

My Desire S is new and "untouched". For what i had got, the official htc release is to be installed manually and has some issues, so I had thought a custom and more recent ROM would have been better.

Then use revolutionary (S-OFF) not unlock via htcdev.com, 4ext recovery and you are good to go
If you are on Sense 3 you will have to downgrade in order to use Revolutionary.io
And of course I concider the ROM in my signature as the best to date

If you are going custom better not use OTA
Revolutionary will install custom recovery so the next thing will be a backup of your stock ROM and installing the Rom.zip from the sdcard via the recovery. No rooting, because all custom ROMs are pre-rooted.
My ROM is ICS, there is no complete stable JB yet but once you have s-off you can try them all within minutes. And do not forget to sync/backup your data (contacts, etc) to Google or with some app from the Play Store. And read some guides before starting anything. I am just giving you directions not a tutorial

So why do you "root"? Just to unlock the phone without touching the FW?
Going custom i guess it's the only way, because htc is not going to update anymore, so better learn how to.
Anyway THANKS A LOT, it's more clear now

Yes you can root your current software (the stock one) if you need just root for an app or something specific without changing the software.
But going custom means to run Android and Sense version which you will never have officially. And they all come pre-rooted

The best app for applications and data backup is titanium backup. It also allows you to make a flashable update zip you can flash after installing a new rom

Ok, and for saving an image of my stock ROM, just in case i need to go back?
Nandroid backup is a part of the recovery and not an app.
Start reading instead of asking, please. The procedure is covered a million times in a million places.
To the answering guys, (almost) off-topic:
I have a riddle for you, or actually, a somewhat sad observation to share and see your opinions. Since this thread is one of the examples for what I'm going to talk about, and it's useless anyway, I won't feel any remorse diverting it.
I've seen several threads during the last couple of weeks where a random noob got the best out of one of the knowledgeable members of the community - in this and other forums - and they helped him instead of sending him to read stuff that he was supposed to be reading to know the answer.
In absolutely all of those threads, noob questions continued and deteriorated to the most basic ones. There wasn't even one thread where the noob wouldn't continue with flood of basic FAQ-sort of questions.
I've wrote in a couple of them more or less what I wrote here - an unpleasant message to stop the flood of baby questions.
All of the noobs were offended.
All of the noobs actually searched and found their answer after that message, and stopped the flood (with a message that here, they were so great they actually found everything themselves).
It's kinda sad, don't you think? Quite a few times bad treatment seems the most efficient way to achieve the best results... Guess there's no miraculous other way I'm missing, or maybe there is?
(P.S. I'm also moderating a local motorcyclists forum, and keeping the same harsh line in technical sub-forum. Works 100% for >5 years already. But sometimes it gets you wondering about human nature...)
