Okay, just remember this is a total rumor, and complete speculation at this point.
This article says that it is "likely" that Samsung will be the first handset maker to provide 2.3 Gingerbread to the U.S. Cellular carriers.
http://androidandme.com/2011/03/pho...the-first-gingerbread-updates-to-us-carriers/
***This is complete speculation, has nothing to do with any of the updates of late, this could not even mean an update for our phone. I am simply posting a link so that everyone else can know. I expect no flame in the thread, it will most likely end in a Close Thread. Take this thread for what it is.***
Eh. 2.3 with the TW interface won't be so great anyways. I'll flash CM7 when it becomes easier to flash and more stable. But it would be nice to see Samsung and ATT pushing out Gingerbread earlier than everyone else.
EDIT: On second thought, I can almost see this purely because the first Gingerbread phone ever was Samsung.
Yeah it is very possible, but if it's true it could take a while

Just so you know CM7 is really stable for many users and the install process is easier then you might think. I would personally love to see just a system dump because that would make these dev's lives easier.

Yeah CM7 isn't that hard to install. Just follow the direction to a T.
Don't think they'll release it any sooner judging on how long they took to release froyo.

If you check the CM7 Q&A thread it says that its not likely that it will ever be a single zip install, so I don't think there's much hope for an easier install, although its fairly easy to begin with anyways. I'm running it right now and it seems bug free for the most part my only complaint is the camera app because its not as nice as the Samsung one but I can live with it.

Could be true.. Probably won't be OTA, but I wouldn't be surprised of the international galaxy s got a 2.3 update by the end of next month. They got 2.2 in what, September, October 2010?
I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3 for the Captivate though.
Bleh, even if Samsung delivered 2.3 tomorrow it would still be eight to twelve months before AT&T could get it's act together and release the software for Captivate and that is if there is ANY plan to update Captivate. I won't hold my breath and really don't need their 2.3.
One thing nice, is that it could be a hint that the Internation Galaxy S is going to be getting an official release sometime soon, which in turn could translate into ports anyway that could contribute to even better custom ROM's. And i doubt it will come to the Captivate. Why when they are trying to sell a new device?

Just installed CM7 on my cappy Thursday took about 5 mins, just follow connexion2005's video linked in the CM7 thread and you'll have no issues. Just make sure you have the files downloaded and your phone flashed to stock before hand.
Well one can hope but to be honest we will get a ported version long before an official version, that is even if we do get one with the Captivate to be considered EOL by ATT as of the middle of next month. Will it be OTA? God I hope not lol
There already is a "official" release. CM7!

Would love to see this on the cappy, but lets face it, its not Samsung holding back most of the time, its ATT. =(
I suppose CM7 isn't HARD, but I just haven't been installing ROMs that long and I've never messed with actual Odin before, just one-click. I'm pretty happy on Precision right now anyways, so I can't see myself flashing CM7 anytime soon. I don't get how 2.3 is so much better than 2.2 anyways.

I think I will never use Odin one click again...it hard bricked my original awesome phone and now i have to use refurbished...
but full odin is better and flashing CM7 is very smooth and awesome...little complicated to install...but that video should help...i flashed twice and i cant go back to froyo from it...
Feel of Gingerbread is better than any froyo rom..
Just with the 2-3 weeks I've been on CM7....its amazing! First its just plain fast, even in its developmental stage it's supremely fast. Secondly The small details, It has the glow effect when you get to the end of a scrollable list, which i think adds a nice touch. Lastly The CRT shutdown is really nice, I don't think I could go back after having it. All in all its really fun to use
has anyone created just a black status bar? I really don't want to install any ROMS at the moment (I am rooted).
Thanks!

I thought the new cm7 comes out for unrooted users instead of having to go ito ROM manager and what-not to get it?
And that's why I'm worried... I'm not really that tech-savvy with this stuff, so I'm hesitant on installing anything.. don't want to brick my phone
Someone will write a updated for the framework-res soon enough. I wonder how it will look with lcd bleeding.
Why flash an entire custom rom for just a black status bar?

You have to be rooted to flash anything. Rom manager isnt ready yet, but clockwork recovery works just fine. And you cant brick a phone by flashing a rom.

Honestly more people should be like you. If you're not comfortable doing the things you see on this forum like rooting, using a custom recovery and flashing roms it's best that you refrain from doing so. A lot of people mess stuff up and don't have enough knowledge to fix it, then panic and cause more problems for themselves.
I was extremely timid with my g1, but now 2 phones later I'm much more comfortable messing with this stuff. The best advice I can give is for you to just read all kinds of stuff on these forums until you get a good idea about what different things do and how they can help and/or hurt what you want to do with your phone, then decide for yourself if you want to proceed.
And yes, like the last poster said, CM is only available to root users. You might be thinking of Gingerbread (Android 2.3) which will be available to non-root users "soon" according to tmobile.
Hope this helps ya out man.
Thanks a lot guys, yes I used ROM manager and it didn't work and it got me stuck at the LG sign when rebooting, and I panicked, so I exchanged my phone.
Got a new one, rooted it for whatever reason - maybe just to freeze bloatware.
I'll just wait for the Gingerbread. I just hope it solves the battery problem? 0_o I'm a stickler for battery, so I need to know soon because I'll just return my phone and get a different one (possibly a blackberry since the battery was always good on my old one), just always wanted to adventure into a smartphone

actually u can brick a phone JUST by flashing a ROM...unlikely given some reasonable intelligence...but it does happen...radios...radios..radios...also...kernels...
I'd say the best method is to just wait for the Official Gingerbread update from LG.
Flashing roms is fun and easy but not everyone has to be a crackflasher. CM7 will never be available for unrooted phones as you have to be rooted to flash it.
The G2x is very new and ClockWorkMod recovery isn't even ready for prime time yet. I would hold off at least until CWM Recovery has a decent automated boot process for our phones.
As far as bleeding screens, you WILL be able to see it with the all black bar. I have 2 G2x's here which 1 I haven't returned yet and has a screen bleed. It is noticeable. I did conclude that the "Sense-themed" bar in Eaglesblood isn't noticeable because of the contrasting colors. So take that with some consideration.

Hi guys - Great website. I love the amount of information being exchanged here. I am new to the rooting environment, but I am not new to IT. I have an IT career, some entry level programming, SQL scripting, and have modded playstations and xboxes previously so I should be able to follow much of the technical talk.
I just purchased a Samsung Charge and have completed the one click root and have confirmed that I have root on ED1. So my questions are (please link to thread if answered elsewhere):
How do I determine which mod/rom is the best and safest to use? Gummy, Altered beast, etc?
Are any gingerbread based mods out or are they all froyo based for the Charge? What is the newest out and is there a projected release schedule?
How do I get the wireless hot stop working for free once I am rooted? Do I have to install a ROM?
Is the Odin application the best way to update the ROMs?
Is the ROM the OS update and the kernel the BIOS update?
It looks like there is an issue doing backups with Charge Mods, so how do I backup my phone? (it looks like the ability to backup has been removed from some mods)
So I am rooted. What are the next steps I need to follow: 1) Backup (how) 2) install new OS ROM????
Thanks for your time.

Pretty much just by reading their threads and seeing what issues people are having. That being said, the Charge ROMs are all pretty new, so safest is to just find a rooted version of stock, which you seem to have accomplished. The other ROMs are trying to improve on things by doing things such as "debloating" (removing useless stuff added by Verizon), etc., but this can have unintended consequences. For instance, with Altered Beast, you'll see he released fixed versions of stock apps which broke.
Are any gingerbread based mods out or are they all froyo based for the Charge? What is the newest out and is there a projected release schedule?

They're all Froyo for now. I'd guess a Gingerbread version will be out within the next month or so, depending on how many devs are working on it. I think Gummy is slightly newer than Altered Beast, but that could change any second. Actually, the newest at this moment is the OTA (Over The Air) release from Verizon last night, EE4.

You just need to install an app. Search the market, or search the forums for what others are using. They're getting a little more difficult to find as Verizon has started blocking some of them from their version of the market.

Right now it seems to be. Though once you use that and have CWM (ClockWork Mod) installed, you might be able to update using CWM. Still a little early to tell.

Pretty close. ROM, as we usually use the term, refers to the Boot ROM, which is the first code run, and essentially the O/S, though some ROMs aren't a complete replacement for all of it. The kernel isn't quite as equivalent, but that's true to the extent that it handles communication between the software and the hardware.
It looks like there is an issue doing backups with Charge Mods, so how do I backup my phone? (it looks like the ability to backup has been removed from some mods)

There's an issue with doing backups through CWM, but you can still use something like Titanium Backup. What do you want to backup? If it's just your software, settings, etc., that should be fine.

I have the ED1 versions rooted with gingerbreak and used root explorer to change the script from ED1 to ED2. Everything is working good and launcher pro is making it look better, but is it safe to load altered beast or other roms using Odin or will it mess it up? I would like to get CWM on it to go straight into bootloader like I did with the Incredible.
The kernel shouldn't be related to a BIOS in a PC, that would be your bootloader. A kernel is part of an Operating system. Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X all have kernels. The kernel, as I understand it, is sort of like the middle man between the software you "see" and the hardware. Drivers are a core part of a kernel, but aren't the only thing in the kernel. A ROM, is the OS, as a kernel is included in any ROM. The ROM will consist of the applications included, be it themed applications or custom built ones, and a kernel.
Keep in mind this is a large generalization of the whole subject, but I think its a good overview.

I wouldn't really expect an official Samsung Gingerbread ROM until next year. They are incredibly slow. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see an unofficial version well before then.

Incredibly slow, yet the DROID Charge just received it's 2nd OTA update in 1 month from release, and the Fascinate just got it's 6th/7th OTA update in the past 8 months as well, and as far as I know, the international SGS has had a similar number of updates come out for it as well. The problem isn't Samsung producing the updates (anymore), it's getting the carriers test them and submit feedback in a timely manner.
Given that the SGS line is getting Gingerbread over the summer from most reports I've read, I'd expect the Charge to get Gingerbread sometime late summer/fall, as well as the rest of the US lineup of SGS phones.

Question. I am using Odin to install alteredbeast. I held down the volume key until after i clicked start on the ROM. It has been working for about 5 minutes and on my phone i can see a downloading icon with a "AX_TIMEOUT" in red in the top left. Did I screw up?

You only have to hold the down volume button for a few seconds, until you get to the yellow downloading screen. Im not sure if that has an effect, but I'd start over. Turn off any antivirus, plug in to your rear USB ports, and try again.

They're doing well on the bugfixes, I'll give them that. But with how long we waited for updates for my wife's Epic, I'm not super keen on Samsung's update schedule. They ranked last on the list of manufacturers updating to newer versions of software. That being said, I'm hoping with this as their Verizon flagship they'll stay on top of it.
Regarding the OTA GB update for the G2X, is this update in any way different from the leaked GB Rom that came around a few months ago?
I'm not sure how to compare the two...
Here is the difference, as best as I can tell...
Paul's leaked 2.3.3 GB made us happy and hopeful.
LG's official 2.3.3 made us sad and jaded.
It's faster, no keyboard lag. I've never had any issues with more phone though. It's just more "complete" besides the missing LG camera which is very sad.

It only seems faster cause they added a swap partition to the rom. I looked through the files and can tell you that a hooker with a box of ***** couldn't have screwed this up as bad as LG.
I am just happy that CM7, EB and MIUI are available for our phones.
Thanks guys, judging by that info it seems there's no point in upgrading.
are the new CM7 nightlies worth updated to? I hate flashing and wiping and having to redo everything everytime, can anyone give me some insight as to how i can restore my phone exactly the way it is now after flashing/wiping/dalvik/battstats, etc?
Actually, you're going to want to upgrade the phone to get the latest baseband. Fortunatly it's incredibly simple to put another custom ROM on the phone, just re-flash CWM and you'll be good to go.

First off I was sticking on topic and actually gave good info as the OTA rom only seems faster due to a swap partition not on the leak....
And I was even talking about the new baseband compared to the old one, Not to mention the info you gave is wrong as both the leak and OTA both have only White signal bars & icons as LG messed up the framework files.
Truth be told they are both the same rom other then swap partition added to the OTA..

Hey guys, been a fan of XDA for years, infinite amounts of knowledge here it seems, and I know nothing. While I could spend years reading all the posts and searching, I figured some of the more knowledgable members may be able to answer a couple quick questions without giving me TOO big of a hard time.
I have had my G2x for about a year which is running 2.3.4, March 2011 baseband. I used to own a G1 and a Motorola Cliq and had experimented with rooting it. I am looking for something new and different, as I'm kind of sick of regular old GB. There is so much knowledge here, and on some ROMs 100's of pages of stuff to read, which unfortuantely most of which I find confusing. I know nothing about baseband versions, radios, etc. I plan on researching a lot of these things, as thats obviously the only way to learn.
My Fiance and I both have the G2x, and are both needing to be hard reset and they're running slowly and the battery seems to be draining faster and faster. I planned to do a hard reset this weekend, but figured I may experiment with rooting and custom roms. If you guys can answer some questions for me, I'd greatly appreiciate it! I know that all this information is likely out there, although I feel completely lost and overwhelmed, unsure where to begin. I had the following questions.
If I decide to root the phone, and try different roms am I always able to "unroot" the phone and bring it back to factory just as it is now? Is this general rooting guide good for 2.3.4? Can I root without loading a custom Rom? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594650
I had been noticing that with Hellfire Sandwhich, and EaglesBlood there are some known issues, like bluetooth I believe, but I'm having a hard time seeing what isn't working currently. I would like to try ICS, but want something stable where I'm not going to experience a lot of programs not working. I don't do a lot on my phone but would like all the little things to work. How would I find "current bugs" or something similar, as there are hundreds of posts I can't seem to find the information.
Is there a certain rom that most people recommend for ICS that is more stable, possible CM?
How common is it to completely brick your phone, if you're not an idiot and follow instructions?
I was told when I bought the phone that it would receive ICS OTA, but this seems debateable. Am I better off waiting to see if this happens, or what do you guys recommend?
I'm sorry this seems like a stupid post, and that I haven't done any reading, because I have, I'm just confused as hell. I REALLY appreciate everyone's help! I've always enjoying messing with phones, although there is just too much to it with Radios, baseband, kernels, all of which I know nothing about, and mean nothing to me at this point. THANKS guys!
That guide will work for you. The good news is that the G2x is close to impossible to brick (it can be done, but definitely takes some talent). NVflash can be used 98% of the time to fix your phone.
As far as ROMs go, you have to experiment. Every G2x is different, and handle different setups differently. With that being said, Kwes's rooted stock ROM fixed a lot of the problems I had with my G2x. If you're bored with stock, most CM7 based ROMs are very stable. As far as ICS goes, Genesis was always my favorite, and the most reliable for me. I recently started playing with Paranoid Android CM9, and so far it works great, and provides a really unique experience.
Just read the first few posts of every ROM and it should provide you with most of the information you need to make a good decision. Hope this helps, and happy flashing!

I've tried pretty much every ROM available (save for quite a few GB ROMs and two JB ROMs), and I feel that the CM10 Paranoid Android is the smoothest ROM available. Every ICS ROM is smooth when you first install it (and I especially love all the features in Domination and Genesis), but after a week or so of use, your phone will start lagging again. With PA, lag is at a minimum. I was on CM9 PA last before getting sick of lag before switching to a GB ROM for a month or so, then decided to finally try out CM10 PA because I just missed flashing new ROMs and I was very impressed. CM10 version runs WAY better than CM9.
I just rooted my phone about 1 week ago and used the guide that the OP posted..everything worked great...I'm currently running hellfire 2.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420972&highlight=hellfire+2+3) and freaking loving it...sooo much better than stock...basically follow the directions from the thread you posted and you'll be fine...
It depends on how important it is to you to have good picture quality with your phone. Even though this phone doesn't have the greatest camera, the stock camera is the best. If you flash to a CM ROM the quality is horrible. I love the performance of CM, but the camera quality was a deal breaker for me.
I ended up trying some stock 2.3.3 roms, but I have ended up back on my rooted stock running 2.3.4 with some tweaks from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1806868&highlight=tweaks and I am running faux's 14b2 kernel. With these two things my phone runs really good.

Do you have a link to the CM10 Paranoid Android you're referring to? I was able to find http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1891480 which says it's CM10, although says alpha and hackfest stating it's buggy. The other version that I found was CM9. Is this the version you're saying is the smoothest?

That's the one. It's no less buggy than any ICS ROM if that's the flavor your going for. CM10 is smoother than CM9. At least in my experience. Does anyone else want to chime in?
The only thing that took me back to CM9 was the battery drain issue on CM10.
On a different note: my phone only likes stock ROMs, but I recent found out about Weapon a New Clip, and it is pretty sweet, and just as reliable as anything else I've ever used

CM10 Paranoid looks soo beautiful and I'm really tempted to try it out, but I have a really good thing going on right now with the hellfire...it's super stable and smooth plus I have a ics theme on it so that keeps things fresh for me. I do have one question for those on CM10 Paranoid. Is it stable enough that you can run the 4.2 gapps or any themes/launchers on it??

I know I tried it. Not a whole lot of difference. I had my wife's stock g2x to do a side by side comparison. I was hoping it would be better.
Unrooting and bringing back to stock.
Hey guys, I rooted my phone and installed Hellfire sandwhich about a month ago. The rom seemed to run good at first, and progressively get slower. I just picked up a Nexus 7 and have no desire to run custom roms on my phone anymore as the tablet has all the bells and whistles, therefore at this point i want to bring my phone back to original condition.
I used this guide to root my phone - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1594650 and installed HFS from there. I am looking at threads to unroot and some of them are using ADB. The first thing that I did is to load my Nandroid backup from when I oringinally rooted my phone, and I am receiving the message saying "Checking MD5 sums...MD5 mismatch!". I have gone to this thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114, but I am unable to access my phone via ADB, as it's saying "Error: Device not found". I have tried to boot into CWM and plug the phone in there, but appears that all my drivers are not loading - http://puu.sh/1JH8J and it's still saying device not found. I have tried enabling USB debugging, as well as turning it off. When I plug the phone in, I only have the option of "Media Device (MTP)" or "Camera (PTP), no "charge only" option under "USB Computer Connection".
I am unsure what to do at this point. I have installed the "LGUnitedMobileDriver S4981MAN38AP22 ML WHQL Ver 3.8.1" drivers and still receiving the same error. Sorry if this has been addressed, as I'm sure it has, but can someone point me in the right direction. Thank you!

Have you tried this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048274 and unroot with SuperOneClick or whatever.
OP have you tried an MIUI based ROM? That's always been a bit of a different experience for me.

I have tried this, and that's when I'm receiving the "Checking MD5 sums...MD5 mismatch!" error after choosing to restore.

I'm sick of gingerbread!
I want sum different. I've had eaglesblood 2.3.4 for years on my g2x and I have tried
Hellfire - works for a while then stuff goes wrong after a wk or so
Tried ICS - stuff is always wrong
On MIUI - and simple stuff is not working after days
I have been flashing phones for a very long time and all the ROMs above I have flashed over n over again and the fact still remains. They DONT Work!
I'm about to flash my eaglesblood back because that's the only thing that works the longest wit no bugs.
is there anything available besides eaglesblood that's stable?
geesh!!

I think Marie Antoinette said, If they don't like Gingerbread then let them eat cake, or something similar.
