Battery drain in sleep mode - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, probably it has been discussed before but coukd not find it. İf i leave my transformer in sleep state the battery drains all the juice in 3-4 days. İ need to prevent this what settings should i play with? İ dont want it to do no sync or anything at the background when it is in sleep mode
İ also dont wanna turn it off completely. My ipad 1 was only drainin around % 5 battery in sleep mode in 5 days. How can i make it par with ipad? Please help me to do the right settings

You can't...battery drains in sleep mode...a bug I cannot stand...turning WiFi and background notifications helps.... I turn the bad boy off if I am not going to use it for a long time.

Thanks. is it true for android tablets or eee pad only? i may try samsung before going back to ipad 2

I cannot say for other android tablets...color nook gets excellent battery life in sleep mode.
Don't give up on the transformer...to me it is a very good device and battery life in sleep mode will get fixed ..I hope..I have the iPad 1 and I use it also, but for different reasons...for me its no big to turn it off. Which ever route you take....hope it works out....

Nook also doesn't use Honeycomb.
@OP: Can you post a graph of your battery usage? I had this problem and fixed it. It was ROM-related I guess.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p163/gbd270/P20110723082933.png is a picture of my sleep mode. 7h+ hours of idle mode (sleep)

i read in another post there is a known issue with some docks nd to contact asus directly there is a fix.

There are 2 variants of honeycomb out for the nook. Both get excellent sleep life..and i have used both..

I was speaking from a point on 'officiality.' But I guess that counts, I don't follow the Nook.
@abprie: Umm.. I don't know how to answer that question.
PRIME 1.6 + Netformer 1.5 is what I use.
I gave battery tips in this thread (or maybe it was in another) refer to those.
To really diagnose your source of where the battery drain is coming from you need battery usage.. or some kind of app that monitors battery levels per app.

wifi disconnects when sleeping?

So, it seems like the xoom wifi model looses its wifi connection after the screen is off for a few minutes; is there a setting that I can change to keep the wifi active all the time, or, is it a function of the built in battery savings modes?
thanks!
weird... I have not encountered this issue.... my xoom is binging all the time when sleeping notifiying me of emails and such.
is it a wifi only model, or a 3g/wifi?
thanks
I have a wifi only version and no problems with wifi
ok, I guess I need to hear from more wifi owners to know if mine has a problem, or its my router..Although I have a brand new cisco/linksys e4200, so it shouldnt be the router..
I have the wifi only model.
I just looked at the settings... go into the wifi settings click the disconnect policy, and make sure "never" is clicked.
thanks, that was the first thing I did..
i also downloaded Spare Parts from the market to see if that would help, but so far it doesnt seem to help at all..
wonder if I have a bad unit..
May I ask why you would never want it to disconnect when screen is off? You will get more battery not using data when data is not needed... I had to go in and do the opposite because I noticed my xoom was draining more than normal when screen is off. Went down five percent in 1 hour which is not good once changing it; it didnt budge when screen is off. just my two cents..

Well if u want data for updates and oush notifications you'll need wifi on. Mines on all the time even when screens off and my battery life is amazing.
If you're having lots of battery drain u might wanna check your "awake" time in battery usage and make sure you don't have a rogue app or widget keeping the Xoom awake while the screen is off. The CNN widget was doing this for me.

Understood. Yea for some reason my awake time is matching my battery use time 100 percent however there is nothing that I can find causing it. Doesnt seem to be draining my battery at all however. I dont have a weather app or cnn app and my running services are just the google framework and core apps / maps ,goog voice. oh well.
It's called WIFI Sleep Policy. Set it to "never."

my thoughts exactly..
battery usage is amazing for me, even with all the widgets I have running on it, which are at least 10 or so..
Easily getting over 12 hours of battery life, which is good, since you cant plug the damn thing in while its standing up..
The engineer who placed the power hole on the bottom should be shot...

[Q] Battery life on standby (NOT in airplane mode)

I seems like we have a discrepancy in how much battery life a TF uses in standby. Some folks seem to be burning <1%/hour, others >3%/hour. Obviously, this makes a huge difference in the total time a TF can be expected to last on a charge.
Please indicate how much yours burns per hour. Please ONLY answer if you run your TF as follows:
1. NOT in airplane mode
2. With wifi in the default (run in background) configuration
What setting is to run wifi in the background?
Also, would the number of apps (singned in) and thinks like exchange emails factor into this?

Yep, a lot of things could impact this. But, the dichotomy seems so clear-cut (literally, <1%/hour for some people vs. >3%/hour for others) that I don't think those things by themselves can account for the difference.

I understand and agree. There should be some type of baseline. can you explain what Wifi setting you mentioned above? I have 3 options - Sleep when screen is off, Never when plugged in and Never - I know thats not exactly how they read but its something like that.

Dunno how many %/hour, but I've gotten from 14 hours to 17 hours.
Picked up the transformer once in a while, put it down, etc..
Here's a screenshot of the 14hr one, charged it at the end for a few minutes.

So you don't think the amount of data being communicated per application affects battery use in idle?
What do you think about signal strength from the WAP? (being further from the WiFi router, in another room, many walls and objects between the unit and the WAP)

I'm comparing my results to what I'm seeing on the Xoom, which is pretty much identically configured to my TF (same email accounts, same apps installed and running, used with the same routers, etc.). The Xoom uses well under 1%/hour on standby, the TF right around 3.5%/hour.
I'very configured my TF to turn WiFi off when sleeping.
Yesterday my TF was unplugged and unused for a full 24 hours for an 8% battery drain.
Regards,
Davw
The reason there will be discrepencies between peoples devices is because everyone installs different apps. It's these apps that drain the battery more/less, so install a battery monitoring app and check the logs every few days. If you're losing more than 1% on standby per hour, then get a task killer program and tasker, and set up schedules to turn off apps at times you dont need them. Also make sure you have actually set the battery app up properly, by changing the rating it thinks the battery is (to 6600mA) instead of any default value it has.

If you are using Battery Monitor Widget then it's from settings>monitoring preferences>battery capacity. Default was 1200mA on mine originally. If you're using some other app, I've no idea.
As an update, I decided to go ahead and do a factory restore, just for kicks. I'm not experiencing much closer standby performance to my Xoom, about 1%/hour or maybe a bit less. In four hours since the restore, I've lost 5% battery life, and that includes a bit of use.
It's possible that the battery just hasn't calibrated since the restore, and so I'll report back if things return to what they were before. At this point, though, I'm hopeful that something was corrupted or misconfigured, and that a factory restore did indeed resolve the issue.

Coolthanks for the info will have to check out that app. Right now i am using battery indicator pro whicb does not have a option to change battery capacity
Another update after the factory reset: charged the TF to 100% and unplugged at midnight. At 8:00am this morning it was at 78%, so roughly 2.75%/hour discharge rate. At 10:00am (also only on standby) it was at 74%, so 2.6%/hour total for the 10 hours.
The Xoom was at 48% at 8:00am (forgot to note its battery life at midnight), and at 10:00am (also on standby) was at 47%. So, the Xoom on standby is burning .5%/hour, which has been my general experience with it.
Both the Xoom and the TF are configured with the same email accounts and settings, the same general configuration (wifi, etc.), and the same apps except for the Asus apps. Since my experience on standby was roughly the same with the original (non-updated) TF build, I don't think it's the Asus apps that are causing the burn.
If most others were experiencing the same thing, I'd write this off as a purely academic exercise. 2.5%/hour burn rate on standby isn't terrible, particularly since I tend to charge every night anyways. My concern, though, is that if others are getting <1%/hour with the same basic settings, and as I'm getting on the Xoom for sure, then the question becomes: is there something wrong with my TF specifically?
Well my transformer is doing better than that. I lost only 3 over 5 hours. Overnight from 10 to 10 battery went from 33 to 27 percent so looking at 0.6 % per hour. Btw I have wifi set to turn off with screen off. Why do I need wifi going if I can't see the screen. For mail when would wake the device it checks the accounts immediately. So........

I've had my TF with me most of the day letting friends play around with it so it's had what I would consider "normal" use.
Starting at 100% this morning when I left and now has 65% after ~8 hours. (See attached screenshot)
I am battery anal too but anyone else feel like discussing a 2% drain difference in idle is kind of ridiculous.. no one runs exactly the same stuff on their devices of course it will be different... to be honest if you are concered about battery drain during idle.. you obviously leave your device unused alot... in which case battery life doesn't matter a great deal cuz you aren't using it hahhha

Disagree with you. I think standby life is very important because the tablet is something you wanna pickup and have immediate access to for information a nd media without always Worrying if the battery's has enough juice. My nook color can go several days on stby and 3 to 4 days of casual use with standby. This tab doing same stuff is giving me 36 hours tops.
Cm7 on nook color has sleep issues and so doesn't enter deep sleep and so battery drain is about 2% instead of. 2% per hour on stock nook.
maybe our devices aren't sleeping deeply and draining much faster.
Something a Dev. can check?

Maximizing Battery Life

What do you guys do to maximize your battery life? I just can't seem to get decent life. Average is probably 5 hours with heavy usage.
Any recommendations?

The usual - brightness as low as you can stand, radios not in use turned off, screen timeout 15 seconds, 200-1400 conservative governor in SetCPU.
Search AutoKiller in the market -- choose "optimal" profile, so far has given me an extra two hours today over what I got yesterday.
5h of heavy use is good already.
You can tweak your idle batt life, 2g-only, undervolted kernel, avoiding power hungry rom.
Idle battery life is just amazing with stock... just test it over night, 6hrs get 2/3% for me.
I can get 30hrs with 4hrs with screen on, the screen is the key here, i can get 5hrs with 4hrs with screen on too. ;o)

Try a kernel that is made to optimise batt life with display active, like the XTEUV92 Trinity kernel.

How would you define "heavy" usage?
Also, what does your "battery use" stats say? (Settings - About Phone - Battery Use)
5 hours of truly heavy usage (online gaming, for instance) is actually to be expected.

You can create a custom prl setting. Turn wifi to never sleep when you're at home... Have the prl to auto *CDMA or GSM* Which ever your network is on. (This goes to all Nexus S. users). So you have wifi on with a signal and 3g off. The phone stays in 2g for calls and uses wifi for data. Turn off google location services while your at home, turn off roaming, turn all of that off. I get about 13 hours of battery life with heavy usage. People think wifi drains your battery but it doesn't if you have mobile data turned off. When you have 3g turned on it's constantly searching for a better connection. If you have wifi on and a strong connection it isn't constantly polling.
are there any charging habits that would help prolong battery life? I usually just charge my phone every night cause, if I remember correctly, these batteries don't have a memory or anything. anyone know if that is the smartest thing to do?

I hope you don't mean overnight. I don't know if phones have auto-cutoff feature (a la laptops), but it's safer just not to charge overnight.
I personally use an extension that has a timer built-in. Nifty. Set the timer, plug the phone in, it will automatically start and stop the charging at the predetermined times. I usually time the charging to end right before I wake up, so the battery doesn't stay fully charged for too long. I heard batteries corrode faster when they're fully charged.
When my battery life starts getting shorter than usual, I let them drain until the phone turns off automatically (well I actually try not to get to that point, but seldom succeeded ), and as soon as possible charge it until full.
Usually the battery holds longer then. It has something to do with teaching the battery about the true empty and true full.. or something.....
AFAIK. CMIIW.
doesn't the nexus s have a built in cut-off feature so it will only charge to 95% though? I figure that would take care of the full charge issue. i'm also not sure if lithium ion batteries have a memory, but you could always reset the battery stats if you're on root to compensate for the whole draining and fully charging thing.

Battery stats! That's the word I was looking for No I wasn't referring to the memory effect
I don't know what would happen when the cut-off feature kicks up. My Nexus S still shows a charging icon even a while after full, so I don't wanna risk it.
The best way is by touching the charger unit after a while and see if it's warm/hot. If it is, it's still charging. But you gotta give it time to cool down first (after it's finished charging) Haven't gotten around to it, though. Always forgot to check the charger

lol, I know that my phone for sure won't charge to 100% from watching it, so even after a night of charging it's still at 95%. I've read a few explanations on this forum about the whole not fully charging thing too, so i'm pretty sure that it's like that on purpose.

[Q] Wifi drains battery

Hi,
just got my brand new Transformer Infinity today and I'm pretty disappointed with battery life - without dock it lasts something between 5 and 6 hours while watching youtube and browsing web and that's not much more than my HTC One X. I found out that wifi drains more battery than the screen - 40%, which is pretty weird, because I'm sitting right next to the router and wifi signal is always stronger than -50dB. Have someone experienced something similar?

Is there a way to check if it's miss calculated or if there is something wrong with wifi module? And if it's actually miss calculated, shouldn't Asus repair it to make sure it is calculated correctly?
your argument might have more merit if you did a test with the wifi always on for a period of time vs without it on.

Since it might be miscalculated that could be wrong. Try watching a movie with another one of similar length without wifi. Afterwards compare battery percentage.
The battery needs a few charge and discharge cycles before you will start to see more meaningful reports. Don't go around and unnerve people by posting about battery life when you cannot possible say anything about that particular issue right now. Let it settle in for a bit. Please.

No, it's not. Li-Ion batteries have hysteresis as well, and the circuitry needs some start and end points to calibrate itself. I would agree that in some cases, like in my SGS2, specific hardware is used that doesn't need as much info as other pieces do, but generally speaking, you can't expect full potential out of the box.
Posted for reference. You can keep believing in your myth busting capabilities; I do not have the illusion I can convince you otherwise.

I agree. As an SGS2 owner myself, I know that when a battery is first used, or removed and put back in, it takes the device a few cycles to properly calibrate the battery gauge to have accurate results. I imagine this is the norm across other devices as well.

Never experienced anything like that since Li-ion batteries came into production.
Btw, just did video tests with wifi on and off, there is almost no difference in battery usage (about 15% per hour with brightness about 50% and IPS+ off), so it seems the battery readings are wrong.
Also I found out today, that auto brightness does not work - stays at maximum level if you go into dark room from bright place forever, exactly the same problem someone experiences with earlier Transformer models. Does auto brightness work OK on your Infinity?

Never experienced anything like that since Li-ion batteries came into production.
Btw, just did video tests with wifi on and off, there is almost no difference in battery usage (about 15% per hour with brightness about 50% and IPS+ off), so it seems the battery readings are wrong.

Auto brightness is buggy here also. Have to control brightness manually....

Well, you can't change the laws of physics.

My specimen does the same. Brightness doesn't go down when I turn off the light in the room, and it stays at the relatively high level it was at. So that currently makes three of us.
Using auto brightness on mine now. Seems fine. Regarding the battery usage, i have wlan at. 30% usage after alot of downloading.

Apart from the physical characteristics of the batteries discussed above, it is a problem I have encountered in numerous Android devices - the stock battery stats are miscalculated in so many ways, we won't even have enough time to name them all (I remember users panicking about the dialer "draining" the battery in numerous threads, while in most cases it was only the stat issue showing the dialer using most of the battery after making/answering an initial call).
For some different measures, try different apps from Google Play, like Badass battery for example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm
According to the review from Taiwan, the Infinity could watch youtube movies for almost 7 hours. The brightness was set to max, volume was set to 50%, using wifi to connect to internet.

Engadget said they got about 9:30 out of the thing. 14:43 with the dock attached. That's looping a 720p video with wifi on, and the screen cranked to 50%. I think with normal usage, you can crank out a good amount of time. You just have to find that sweet spot with battery usage. I know I'm still working that out on my Bionic...but I've gotten that to last all day lately.

After one week of usage mine lasts about 9 hours while idling with 50% brightness, about 4-6 hours while watching youtube or browsing and about 3 hours while watching videos or gaming at 100% brightness and IPS+ on. Right now battery is at 66% after 1:48 of youtube and browsing with about 35% brightness, Badass Battery estimation - 3:06 left. What is battery life on your Infinity?

Wifi battery drain

Hi. I'm having a problem. The wifi is draining my battery. My battery will only last about 4 hours of screen on time.
I've already check the power option of disabling wifi when the screen is off. Wifi drains at least 40%of the charge.
I've read other forums but nobody has an answer just yet. I really like this tablet, but it makes me mad just having 4 hours of battery.
Driver problem, an app misbehaving, hardware problem?
What can I do? What should I do? How many of you are having this issue?

Depending on your usage, it is indeed possible to drain battery 3-4 hours. I myself never had that situation but for those who played highly CPU/GPU intensive game along with WIFI had that issue. I usually had 5-6 hours on my routine use which to me seems was not much.
So couple things I believe you should look into.
1. How is your monitor brightness?
2. What applications are you running? e.g. are you downloading on background with playing some game foreground?
Those sort of basic things. To identify whether the WIFI is actual issue or not, one thing you can do is simply turn off the WIFI and do whatever you need for couple hours and see where you at in your battery. If you have 50% drained in couple hours without WIFI on, clearly WIFI is not the issue but if you suddenly get only 20% battery drain from WIFI off, it is indeed the WIFI.
If WIFI is indeed the issue and perhaps you can try Juice Defender but it will only save battery if you are not using WIFI all the time.
For detail, please refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805636.
One last thing is obvious, but battery save mode rather than balance mode gave me extra couple hours without sacrifice in my foreground application performance; however, I did notice main screen page swiping or application launch animation weren't as smooth. Almost felt like back to my old Galaxy 10.1 tablet on Honeycomb.
There is actually a bug that makes your battery overview show the percentage of wifi on time as percentage of wifi battery consumption:
-> wifi on 80% of time > shows 80% of power consumption from wifi.
How long do you have your device ?
When i first got it I also thought that the battery time was bad but now ( i have had it for about a week) i get battery drain of 10% / hr while surfing and 14-18 %/hr while streaming video over wifi and 0,5-1% / hr while standby with wifi and sync on.
I have the brightness on manual contorl and when i watch video i change the performance to eco setting.
Hi, thank you for your responses..... This is an update of what is going on.
I am already on firmware. 26, but had the problems since fw. 22
Yesterday I did a factory reset to rule out some mysterious app. The battery issue continued under wifi.
Wifi was still draining between 40 and 50% of the battery. Completely drained in about 4 hours of browsing time in balanced mode and about 40% screen brightness.
I just did another test. I played 2 movies with the wifi off. After 4 hours of screen on time the battery fell to 66%. So the tablet have enough battery juice for 12 back to back movies. That's great, I can rule out the battery.
So far I can confirm that the battery is draining extremely fast with wifi and is not a big showing erroneous battery drain.
4 hours of browsing tine is a joke for a tablet...
Any other things you think I can try?
For how long have you had it? No matter what people say, the calibration algorithms for these kinds of batteries still need several cycles of charging and discharging before they can actually read out any battery level accurately. I easily go for far longer than that on my device -- not that that fact helps you out, I know -- but I thought battery life was worse in he beginning as well. I guess it just needs to settle down a bit. Give it a week.
EIDT: Oh, and....eeehmmmmm.... do not believe the standard Android battery tool. Get yer mitts on BetterBatteryStats and get a few cycles on it, check the readouts and then report back in.

Thanks. I've already installed better battery stats.. While Web browsing battery drains up to 30%/h. I know is too soon to get to a conclusion. I will keep you post it.
Hope there is some firmware update that will fix this. This is Asus 5th tablet (transformer, prime, slider, tf300) I don't want a beta product!
Sorry about the whining, I know that you guys are helping me..
Battery life is really bad on this we need the motley kernel and some custom rooms soon !!!
I am running this tablet on performance and it is still very slow ccompared to my prime I hoped I can wait for the custom rooms and kernels before I sell this tablet i know i am very impatient
i have a tf700 too and have the same problem on wifi I love this tablet, i think we need to find a fix. Hope to hear from some of the smart people on this forum.
The reason for the low battery is this; Asus did not put a larger battery in Infinity compared to Prime.
Both devices have the exact same battery, but since Infinity runs at a higher clock speed and has a higher resolution screen, it drains the battery much much faster.
You can't really fix this with software. You can however lower the voltage with a custom kernel, making slightly improvement....but that'll also make the device unstable.
Just to let you guys know, i have assigned a fixed ip address for my Tf700 and the wifi drain seems to have decreased. I won't rely on the native android battery monitor (mine still says 85% battery drain by wifi). But i have noticed much less actually drain/hour when using wifi with a fixed ip address than not. YMMV.
