So what's the big deal about these GB leaks? I understand it means GB is coming to our beloved phone but I don't get why the leak itself is so highly praised, I haven't personally used it yet(just too much work for a non apparent gain) but it just seems like a glitchy unstable firmware to run.
I'd just like to know why everyone seems to like this leak so much.
From what I've seen, they give you a bit of a performance/signal boost. Everything feels smoother overall. That's it,I think. Netflix used to be a big reason for GB, but now it's on Froyo devices as well.
Ya I've heard of the performance boost but Voodoo is a better boost IMO(I'm not going on Quadrants, it's just with Voodoo I haven't noticed any hints of lag and I run 3 widgets + underclock). I do think the radio is a huge necessity seeing as I drop 4g connection all the time but I've heard of the GB leaks not allowing you to receive calls/SMS. Lame.

Well, since we don't have GB source code for our Charges, we haven't been able to get voodoo out as quick as with source code available. From what I've heard, though, a voodoo kernel for GB is in the works. GB + voodoo = heaven.
I'm using Navenedrob's EXT4 formatter/Nameless kernel and my phone is very smooth. Unfortunately, using that kernel, I can't take advantage of any form of voodoo.
Anyway, I'm currently running the latest GB leak and I get SMS/calls just fine.
Just curious if there are any deciding factors, I'll probably stick with Froyo until the official GB is released(probably 1-3 months). Hell, I got the phone at Costco so I might just swap it if the Galaxy S2 comes out before GB.
The big deal about the Gingerbread leaks is just that -- they're Gingerbread, which is the latest and greatest version of Android.
That said, Gingerbread is and was intended as a fairly minor update, with improvements almost exclusively focused around the UI and game performance.
It's certainly nice, but it's not like getting a new phone. It's just that a lot of people are prone to excessive hyperbole... which may be why reading these forums you might get the impression Gingerbread is the best thing since sliced, uh, bread.
As I've said before around here, the conventional wisdom (i.e. that GB was a minor OS update) has never held true for me. When I first went from Froyo to GB on the Evo, it was like a revelation in terms of speed, performance, battery life, etc. Can't say it's exactly the same sensation for the Charge yet since we are working off leaks, but I still find even the leaked GB much smoother than Froyo.
Its not just about GB. Kejars gummy version is MORE stable than the stock Froyo.
Google are the ones that say GB is a minor update, and the code for 2.3 is only 2.8something% different than 2.2. The amazing performance increases you claim just aren't substantiated by the code.
Going from 2.1 to 2.2, on the other hand, was supposed to provide a huge performance boost.
What's "so good" about the leaks is that it gives the devs, themers, etc. an early opportunity to work with GB for the Charge, so that when the official release comes out, they will already be in a good position to get their work out quickly. That's how I see it at least.
Nothing...they suck.
Aside from having the devs getting a jump start on some ROMS, the GB leaks are awful.

Saying they suck is also hyperbole. They don't suck; they're just leaks, and leaks usually are not quite finished products.
The significance about the leaks is that they get us angry because they show that we won't be getting TouchWiz 4.

Gingerbread or froyo!? Which do u prefer and why?
For now I prefer Froyo. The GB is unpolished to my eye. I have run both and always go back to lightning fast GummyCharged FE.
GB really slowed my lte speed like about 1/3. There are a few visual tweaks on GB but nothing to write home about. Also it seemed kinda sluggish.
You really don't gain any functionality on GB. Froyo is solid on the charge.
GC FE works really good with lots of nice themes for it.
Polished gingerbread > Polished froyo > leaked gingerbread

I prefer Froyo, its way more stable to me. Also, the speeds on GB are horrible! My 4G feels like 3G when I use GB.

Your speeds are exactly the same. You looking at your speed test results and your mind is playing tricks on you. Speedtest isn't working right on gingerbread. Go to speakeasy.com instead and see what I mean.
prefer froyo at the moment now that netflix is on froyo i don't see any improvement to move to GB

If you are basing your opinion on the GB leak for the charge and you notice no loss of lte speed, that is great. I would have stuck on GB if that was the case.
My lte slowed dramatically on GB then instantly got good when I reverted back to froyo. This is based on speakeasy.net results. Also not only with speedtests but when dl files, apps and webpages, it was friggin slow.
I follow the development thread every now and again. Recently so much stuff has sprung up i am confused. Reading it tells me so much and I don't want to install every single one to find out properly.

The Wanhu and Special are similar but different. The Special is the way to go (but not yet b/c Hellmonger is working on the stuck at M problem). Wanhu with MZ patch works very well according to Libertymonger. CM6 is also very good-customizable, but it is still in development and may not be what you are looking for quite yet.
My suggestion is to go to front page of all three and see specs and what you want out of them. Most of us can't really stay on a ROM for more than a week anyways, so we are constantly flashing over and over to tweak this or mess with that.

If I had to choose between any of the 2.2 ROMs it'd have to be WanHU stock, no patches. But I have to say my priorities have changed a lil after trying out each and every ROM. Stability issues have bothered me alot with most of the ROM's and I found coming from the 2.1 signapore SBF with Wanhu over it was the most stable. Not to mention the stock look, improved battery life and overall functionality. But people's tastes might be different. The special is based on WanHU with alot of customizations, from the theme to the inner workings of the ROM, and it is still in developement so there are some boot problems. Also people don't like the korean number format which is fixed in the special. CM6 is pretty cool too, loads of customizations right from the settings but its not without its problems, eg the stock google camera app doesnt take pictures at full resolution and there are also other tiny bugs here and there. I'd say try the special, or wanhu and watch the CM6 development.
I actually don't know when I will be content with the version of ROM on my phone. Theres always new ROMS released for any phones, and I always have an urge to update it to the latest. I think its becoming an obsession almost.
as a guideline, I wouldn't recommend any 2.3 roms from experience. I don't think our phones have the overall capacity and stability for 2.3.
And its also true about the battery life. 2.2 seems to drain battery on my phone faster.
Khalpowers WanHU
I would have to say for now, until Hellmonger releases his Special Hellmonger edition, Khalpower's WhanHU steelblue is the best, Very Very stable, ram is very stable between 50-85 constant, and when you kill apps it holds steady instead of just dropping again. Only downfall with it is 20% battery increments(being worked on) and phone number format( also may be fixed). If we didn't have Hellmongers Special after it is made stable, Khal's would be my choice for now. It is fully functional with fm radio and tv out and whatever else. I think Hellmonger's mod's to it is more to do with the whole phone like camera and recording and things too maybe. I know CM6 is super super fast but khal's is fast enough for me plus can handle the games and things. I will take fast and functionality over superfast with half functionality. My 2 cents! stick it in yo pocket or cash it in! lol
The CM6 rom is a potential rom to be the best... However there are several issues to fix like the camera/camcorder application(8mp/hd recording), FM etc....
As of now, I'm using the original Wanhu stock rom with the latest update from Mioze, Dark Froyo Theme and ADW-Ex launcher... overclock at 1200 MHz, 75 vsel, this rom rocks..... very fast and snappy.
After been useing cm6 its the best.
No memory leaks.
Its very compatiable with ardoidiani openrecovery.
You have reboot the phone everyday.
It blazing fast.
No radio support who cares its a crapy radio any way.

Cm6 is very competent in my opinion. Was on miui before this and I must say cm6 has beaten our miui rom in stability and speed. With stability I mean the general absense of force closes and reboots.

I'm looking for the exact same answer and I thinking I leaning towards the stock roms.
Because most of those I have tried proved to be unstable at some point. One made my camera lose some features, the other made the fm radio stop working altogether.
And finally the last I've tried couldn't run Skype well, it would crash misteriously. Now I'm back to the stock rom, only this time is rooted and a newer version. So far so good, happy to have a stable phone again. I get enough headaches and crashes from my laptop and pc.
CM6.
My reason its the best.
1. Have not had reboot fot five days.
2.you can under clock it to 650 and fast as hell.
3. Memory avg aound 70 but it can go high 110 i have had this high.
4. When under clock much better battery life.
5. The most staible rom i have used on xt720.
Many more reason picking this rom.
You need to use ardoidiani openrecovery with cm6.

That's weird.. I don't overclock cm6 and it runs smooth at default 720 mhz. I then overclock it to 1 ghz, and back to 720 mhz, and its sluggish. I cannot imagine running it lower than 720. Not to mention by average free memory has gone down since i installed it a week ago. Average was 70-80, now its like: 20-30. I use autokiller memory optomizer and advanced task killer, but it still stays at 20-30 free mbs.
On the brighter side, battery seems to be extended a couple of hours for me on this rom. I can get 2+hours of phone call, texting all day, and some web surfing and game playing in for about 14 hours and have 20% battery left. It has yet to crash and restart, and I love the themes. It is really fast for me at 1 ghz. This is all updated over top the Cincinnati Bell froyo 2.2 "update".
I dont use minifree or any taskmanagers their a wast of memory.
I manage program memory through ardroidiani openrecovery.

so its between wanhu and CM6.. interesting, no-one has the miui rom as their top choice....i really like the sync, brigtness, data, gps switching on the fly on the notification bar.
Do wanhu or cm6 have this features? saves space and reduces amount of widgets needed. Also anyone know if MIUI has a push messaging problem?

CM6 has this. You can select/choose from up to 6 buttons in CM settings.

Some things about camera on CM6: the menu that pops up for setting preferences (the top most of the six icons) actually scrolls, but it's impossible to have known that because it doesn't look like that at all. Also, milaq's CM 6.3.0 has updates to the camera--6.3.0 for XT720 should be out today or tomorrow depending on how testing goes this evening (it's built and sitting on my disk ). Mostly the CM camera doesn't offer to crop images to widescreen format by chopping off the top and bottom--so people expecting 8MP to be widescreen maybe get confused (I haven't tested this yet because of the camera updates that are in 6.3.0).
The other somewhat hassle with CM6 at the moment is that video playback isn't on par with WanHu/XDAspecial yet. Software decoding works as a workaround to playback some files, but WanHu/XDAspecial seems to be the media king. I also don't think HDMI output works yet on CM6, but it supposedly works well on WanHu/XDAspecial.
I agree with mchlbenner on the pluses of CM6 having tested Dexter 1.3, MIUI V2-V4, WanHu and the Cincinati Bell Froyo.I personally find that CM6 has the least Forced close and reboots and better power consumption of the ROMS I have tried.
IMHO, I reckon we cannot expect these modded ROMS to be 100% perfect since it is the work of the community as there will always be some small lingering issues - just try all the ROMS and then decide which ones suit your needs the best or closest.

Skyrocketeer with flashed Rogers radio. It's very stable, had some slight issues with the sms timestamps but with the help of SMStimeFIX from market it was solved. Also still looking to confirm if i obtain full 50mb/s LTE speed but until i got back to that spot where i always get it, i wont be able to confirm. It's a nice looking rom, snappy, fast, good battery life, nice emprovements
Stock rom. I've tried a few, including sky ics. Good rom but I still found stock more stable. But it depends on the user. I don't like to search as to why apps keep fcing. I just like it when I use my phone that it runs smooth. The rogers stock is good. Isn't any bloaware to slow it down. However I did get rid of the odd app and widget installed
hey i tried some roms soo far. the roms/kernel id recommend is either use sky/tpc/rocketeer. kernel wise id stay away from all kernels i mean no offence given devs work hard on kernel, but unless you rogers folks wanted a heat around camera area for everyday i know i don't use stock rogers kernel its snappy @ 1.5ghz + no lags + my heavy day to day lasts me 1 and 1/2 day with full use of wifi,bt,browser and games. just remove all the bloatware and u'll see.
Stock Rom for me, although I have started to play with Go Launcher to spice things up a little bit. Waiting for ICS my self.
Stock here as well, tried a few roms, and aside from over or under clocking, which I love, there haven't been any roms or kernels as stable so far. If someone comes up with a great way to 'clock let's hear it!

Runnin skyicecream sandwich jugglin between faux and romracer kernel cant get the romracer to deepsleep. Running faux at 1.5gz max with setcpu and its pretty stable no fc or sod. Smooth and fast.

I've been on Android for over 3 years now..
Had so many different roms on my devices. This one I've used syrocketeer, was nice, smooth stable, not many issues.
Tried SkyIce Cream Sandwich rom. Was pissed off it was just a theme of ICS on 2.3.6 IMO name is very misleading, but whatever, to each his own. Was a good stable rom if you want a nice overlay of ICS, had a few issues with FC but the dev gives pretty good instructions on how to fix it.
Most of these I was running primarily until Cyanogen team came out with something stable enough to put on my phone. As I've always found CM to be the best thing you can run.
Newest build for me has been very stable - running Da_G kernel. No issues except for the call issue posted in their forums. I think that was supposed to be fixed in the latest update, however I haven't gotten around to updating. Turning GPS on seemed to work to fix the issue tho. I would never change to anything else (unless real ICS rom came out, then would only stay on that till CM9 came out with a stable enough release)
I have confirmed in most parts of Toronto where reception is decent enough I'm getting an average of 30+ mbps. Closer to downtown core upwards of 40mbps and in a few cases up to 58mbps. So LTE works great on that ROM as well.

I was loving Darkyy on my SGS but even though I played with a couple ROMS and kernels on the SII LTE I went back to stock. Solid, fast, and good battery life.
I did freeze and uninstall most of what I could identify as bloatware and the horrid touchwiz slowpoke. I picked up ADW EX when it was on the 10 for 0.10 sale, and like it better (landscape mode and the ability to customize the dock easily is a big bonus).

Using the Stock rom. Haven't had one issue with it and since I'm coming from a Touch pro 2 running WM 6.1 this thing is fast enough as is......For now.
Stock myself, played around with a few ROMs but ended up liking the reliability of the stock. Eagerly awaiting ICS and CM 9.
I have flashed almost all of the ROMs on here and in my opinion the snappiest one was the Quikwiz 1.0.3 and skyrocketeer was pretty quick as well. Right now im running stock though because as almost everybody said it is the most stable build for Rogers rightnow. I am trying to get the stock-ish kernel by romracer on my phone right now. If anybody has flashed that i would like to know how the battery and speed were? Thanks
Stock Rom for me, i tried Da_G's Kernel but got alot of SOD's. There were a few fixes such as deleting modules etc but none of those ever fixed it. Sadly I'm getting poor battery life on my Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE even with JuiceDefender Ultimate installed. Before JuiceDefender I was about to take the phone back, now it's just sub par battery life. As for now I'm done with messing around on flashing the phone , at least until we get our stock ICS ROM. It should be coming out soon, that's my hope.
I've flashed Sky and TPC. Both are fairly stable, but I'm not getting any where close to the battery life some of these AT&T guys are getting.
I'm a fairly heavy user—LTE on all day, but I have wifi on at work and home.
I personally don't feel that flashing a new ROM has done anything for my battery life, however it HAS improved my usability factor (both Sky and TPC have been able to grant me a sizeable performance increase).
I have galaxy skyrocket with 2.3.5 and pretty happy with it. A friend installed ICS on his and on a quick glance I have not noticed any major benefits.
In general I am all for using latest software, but this is my primary phone and my life almost depends on it. I had some bad experience with experimental ROMs on my previous phone (it started hanging up and battery life decreased significantly) and this time I am cautious to upgrade and weighting pros and cons.
So, my question is: what are the major benefits on ICS compared to 2.3.5?
What major features I will get which would make it worth updating?

I'll chime in. The GB rom's are MUCH better right now. ICS leak is slow, and tons of bugs. None of the devs are able to fix the bugs so the custom roms are simply themed, packages added/removed, etc, and all the ICS bugs remain. The only thing ICS really brings right now is a better launcher and the ability to run the few ICS apps out there. When I switched back to GB I couldn't believe how fast my phone was.
I tried the leak and was less than impressed by the difference.
I have been back on Gingerbread ever since.

Super stable and very modder friendly.
I was loving the nexusmod GB rom but i took the leap yesterday to jump up to ICS. i flashed the UCLA4 modem followed by superlite 5 and honestly, i'm loving it. its much more aesthetically pleasing, and zippy as hell. On top of that, add supercharger and the build.prop tweaks mentioned earlier in the general section and you have a blazing fast UI.
I haven't noticed any battery drain yet, i think that might've been fixed in this latest version. It's honestly draining the same rate as it did on nexusmod. I get through a day with about 20-30% while listening to music, texting my gf regularly, and connected to wifi to play words with friends/draw something.
My vote : get yourself up to superlite
I tried the ICS leak stock (rooted and debloated).
The negatives out weighed the positives I get. In particular the battery life was worse. I got 4-6 hours less life from each charge.
Also some of the bugs, such as losing root and restart/reboot lock ups did not show up for a few days after I installed ICS.
I am back to 2.3.5.
It works well for me, YMMV.

Also, should I expect a decrease in battery life or an increase?

I experienced lower battery life and performance issues.
From apps taking longer to launch to general lagginess of the rom. Other users have complaints about that in the various dev threads.
I started a thread in general about my downgrade to cm7. I have to say it makes the cappy feel new after using various laggy ics/jb roms.
But as with all things your mileage may vary. Not everyone complains about the upgrades.

Thanks, that was definitely something I was worried about. I actually recently started to use the Captivate because my old iPhone 3GS just ran terribly choppy (along with a much decreased battery life) with the newer iOS that was forced onto it so I don't want that kind of situation to reoccur.
I'm personally running the Slim Bean 2.1 rom which is Android 4.1. Other than the small bugs listed on their site, my phone is running butter smooth with no issues. As a moderate user to heavy user, my battery lasts pretty much the whole day and some. You just gotta follow the dev instructions and do your research.
I am currently running slim Bean, but I also ran slim ics. Which I felt that my phone has never run better on either of these two roms... Battery life was about the same for me between gb, ics, and jb.

One of the great features of ICS/JB is the battery settings option. From here, you can see what is draining your battery. When I flashed CM10 a few weeks ago, I noticed one of the widgets I used on CM9 was draining the battery big time (30-40%). So I disabled that widget and now I get battery life that is equal if not better then stock GB.
I've also ordred some 1800mAH batteries from Amazon which will definitely get me through a work day.
I'm currently Paranoid Android JB, and the battery life difference from 4.0 is negligible, but from 2.3, it's quite a change. As far as lag, it would be pretty bad if I was unable to OC it. Currently comfy at 1200MHz with the ondemand governor, and battery life is still better than GB.
I was stock GB for ages and had decent battery life. Then switched to CM 7.2 and had a horrible battery life. Switched to CM 9.1 and it isn't any better. So I ordered a 1800 battery, hopefully it will improve things.

Just as a mini update for anyone viewing this thread, i've tried both CM9 and Jelly Bean Lanight rom. Both have been pretty fast, haven't really seen any lag issues and battery is relatively the same.
ICS update to sgh-i897 captivate
I updated my ATT captivate SGHi897 to ICS recently from here

I am bit novice here on ROM .version build etc. but its running 4.0.3 Build - IML74K eng.
I notice my captivate is now bit laggy in opening up cameraand some apps but not that significant.
Actually It has solved many issues when i was running gingerbread earlier with too many forceclose issues , choppy signal , calls dropping etc.
Also I noticed my network signal is much better and shows " H " instead of 3g earlier. I did not know captivate is compatible for H and not just 3g.
I did notice te browsing is much much faster than gingerbread. ginger bread was horrible than the previous OS.
I was bale to browse in the same places where I was not even getting any signal to make voice calls , the Signal reception is great with ICS now . Not sure how a OS can affect the signal reception.
over all i am happy with ICS on my captivate.

My wife runs cm9 loves it. Fastest ROM she's had. Swears by it. I noticed alot of roms only do 3g no 3g at home so it goes to edge. But cm9 let's her get 4g everywhere. I've been out of the scene since my cappy went swimming . I miss it very much! Great phone. Go cyanogen mod download gapps. You want galaxymtd btw.

I am bit novice here on ROM .version build etc. but its running 4.0.3 Build - IML74K eng.
I notice my captivate is now bit laggy in opening up cameraand some apps but not that significant.
Actually It has solved many issues when i was running gingerbread earlier with too many forceclose issues , choppy signal , calls dropping etc.
Also I noticed my network signal is much better and shows " H " instead of 3g earlier. I did not know captivate is compatible for H and not just 3g.
I did notice te browsing is much much faster than gingerbread. ginger bread was horrible than the previous OS.
I was bale to browse in the same places where I was not even getting any signal to make voice calls , the Signal reception is great with ICS now . Not sure how a OS can affect the signal reception.
over all i am happy with ICS on my captivate.

The ICS browser has been reworked and made better. It is faster and a lot more stable than the GB browser. Signal quality could be due to the fact that the i9000 with ics has newer and better modems. Btw im looking at your link and i noticed that you flashed a rom from the i9000 forums. I would suggest that you flash a rom from i897 forums. Even though both phones have similar spec they are very different and that could be the cause of your lag.
