Thinking about going from 7 to 10.1 - General Topics

My 7 isn't a bad tablet at all. But there are times when I have to dock and transfer files and I have read the 10.1 does have that feature.
Wondering for those that have made the jump if there is an upgrade in overall quality and faster performance. Thanks in advance. Searched for similar threads but nothing came up dating back to May.

Man, you have a large selection of 10.1 tablets to choose from. They all are nice, but the ultimate desicion will be on you and what you are looking for. You have these options:
Samsung Galaxy 10.1
- This one is like an iPad clone.
- Thin and light.
- Has no expansion ports native to it. You have to get a cable adapter from Samsung.
Motarola Xoom
- This was the first 10.1.
- Has microSD port, but it did not initially work (I think an update is out and it does now)
- Has microUSB port
- Has microHDMI port
Asus Transformer
- Has microSD port
- Has MicroHDMI port
- Has keyboard docking station with full size USB ports and extra battery (cost extra)
Acer Iconia
- Has Full size USB port
- Has microSD port
- Has microHDMI port
Toshiba Thrive
- Has full size USB port
- Has full size SD port
- Has full size HDMI port
Levono IdeaPad
- New player on the market
- Full size USB port
- Mini HDMI port
- 3-in1 card reader (at least on some sites it says so)
There are different screens and memory options from 8GB to 32 GB. The Toshiba will support a 128GB SD card. All run the same guts under the screen and all are Android 3.x. Reading the forums, all have some type of software issue and a lot of tablets have had GPS issues. I think I have listed them from lightest to heaviest. Each have thier pluses and each have thier minuses. All alow you to hook up to a PC and transfer data. The ones with the external micro or SD slot allow you to transfer directly or inderctly to the SD card. Hope this helps. The bottom line is what features do you want and how much do you want to spend. Look them all over and decide.

I have heard reports that you can't use a card > 16Gb in the tablet but that's unconfirmed AFAIK.
I've also heard rumours that the keyboard's full-size SD card slot will take SDXC format cards which supports >32Gb capacity but again I've seen no confirmation of that.
I am snapping this up as soon as it's released here.
Questions on the storage:
1-As mentioned above, is this confirmed that the tablet microSD won't accept anything larger than 8GB?
2- If i get the dock and say I have a 16gb microsd card in the tablet and 32gb sd card in the dock, i should be able to access BOTH of these from the tablet (while docked) correct? So theoretically, I would have 16GB-built in flash on tablet + 16GB microsd card on tablet + 32GB SD card in dock = 64GB?
3-I just want to find out if by docking the tablet, the tablet storage just acts like another drive?
Thanks
KG
1- Even though I have the original manual here as a pdf, there's no info on what is the maximum size of SD card in the tablet slot.
2- I'm 99% sure that it's like that. Everything else would be stupid because many android applications store data on the (tablet) sd card.
3- yes, quite sure it does.
As a plus, you can use the USB 2.0 ports to add external hard drives.
Quote from manual:
USB Port (2.0)
The USB (Universal Serial Bus) is compatible with USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 devices such as keyboards, pointing devices, flash disk drive and hard disk drives.

There's a way to use USB host without the dock? I don't want to buy the keyboard because i've already got a 13" notebook for mobility, i just need a tablet but the USB host is necessary for me.

Thanks for the reply!
In that case, I can't wait to get this tablet what a great concept, best of both worlds. No need to buy a case, just shut the lid and you can carry it on travel without worrying too much just like a laptop, with all the various expandability options, no need to worry about HDD space either.
When combined with dock, it actually has 2 3.5mm sockets, which means I can use 1 device and myself and my wife can watch the same thing with 2 headphones and not worry about viewing angles thanks to the IPS screen...
So long as the 16GB tablet+dock comes in at around $500 or less, I am good...!

Any answer on maximum capacity?

Did you by any chance find out what is the maximum capacity of the microSD card that can be used in the tablet?
I have a 16Gb class 10 installed and working perfect. I'm just thinking to purchase one of 64Gb and I'm not sure it will work.
There is no rated max capacity, I've see people who put 128GB cards in there (NTFS formatted) that work fine.
That's great news. I'll try to find a good deal on a 64Gb card and use it with my Transformer
Does anyone know if we can connect an external USB drive to the TF101 without the dock? Thanks.

yes you can but you need to mod your charging cord or buy the asus proprietary port/usb dongle

[Q] A few simple questions

I am considering the Transformer over the Acer A500 mainly because of the display. However, I do enjoy the sd card and usb ports on the acer.
I am confused with the Asus ports. Since I am not interested in the dock, I was wondering if the asus has usb and micros sd ports on the tablet without needing the dock.
If not, I may just end up keeping the acer. However, do you know of other additional features of the transformer over the acer? (besides the dock)
Thanks!
JT
THe tablet only has a microSD card on the tablet itself
the dock has the 2 usb ports, and full size SD card
Yea the TF tablet itself doesn't have the USB ports. It just has the SD Card slot
It has MicroSD and mini HDMI but no USB, I don't know for certain but it looks like Asus will be producing a desk dock (not keyboard), maybe it'll have a USB port .... that's pure speculation on my part.
Asus will be releasing a USB accessory that plugs into the data port on the tablet......

[Q] First Tablet! :D

Can I use a memory card to extend the memory? and can I have a one in the tablet and one in the dock? 32+32+16(tablet)?
When using the dock,it drains the dock battery first, then the tablet itself?
Is there a headphone jack on the dock?
Are there any homescreen replacements?
1. Expand the capacity not the memory.
2 It's suppose to do that.
3. No
4. ADWLauncher EX, Launcher Pro
Hope this helps.

Yeah,memory capacity
Thanks. Is this a good tablet to start with?
Been wanting the iPad 2 for a while but it lacks features. Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Sony's Tablet S were also on my list then the Eee Pad Transformer caught my eye.
Dock (16 hours) and memory card expansion are SOOO GOOOD features I like. Is the new EeePad slider a successor to this? (in terms of performance)? I want this tablet to be future proof and last a while until I get a new one.
To elaborate a little:
Yes, you can have a microsd card in the tablet, a standard sd card in the dock and even plug in flash drives or hard drives to the usb ports on the dock.
I don't actually have the dock so I'm not too sure but I believe it drains the dock battery first and the dock battery actually charges the tablet. It has something like 16 hours of battery life with the dock.
The dock doesn't have a headphone jack but the tablet has one on the side so docked or not, you can get to the headphone jack.
I haven't used any homescreen replacements in honeycomb, but I keep reading the ones for phones work (launcher pro, adw, etc).
It's an excellent tablet to start with, not just for the price but for the fact that you can convert it into a netbook by adding the dock. In turn you get 2 USB ports and a full size SD card reader that will give you even more capacity and of course an extra battery which will give you a total of 16 hours of normal usage.
I started with the Viewsonic g-Tablet and the very first thing I did was to root it and throw a custom ROM on it which I went from Froyo 2.2 to Honeycomb 3.1.
The Eee Transformer caught my eye because it had HC 3.1 natively and I had to have it. I looked at the Galaxy 10.1 and it's slim design and it would have been my primary choice if it had the capability for capacity expandability. It also had a $500 price tag instead of a $400 like the TF.
I didn't really give the Sony or the Slider a look because I was already sold on the TF so maybe someone else can elaborate on those tablets pros and cons.
By the way, congrats on your new TF. I'm sure you'll have hours of enjoyment with it.
Thanks for the response,appreciate it
No problem, glad I could help out a fellow TF user.

1.Yes, the dock also has 2 usb ports, which makes it easier to transfer files or for the extra storage space.
2. Yes it does, and if the tablet is 50% battery then decide to use the dock, and battery power in the dock is transferred to the tablet in case you want to undock it.
So what's the max memory I can with the tablet itself, AND with the dock
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I have THIS 32gb MicroSDHC inserted into my tablet and THIS 128gb SDXC card inserted into my dock. I also plug THIS SSD in THIS external enclosure with a whole ton of movies and media loaded on it and it's simple as pie to just switch back and forth between my desktop, laptop and tablet anytime I want.
That's a total of 280gb in external media jacked into this thing, so you get the idea of the possibilities. Incidentally, USB 3.0 is backward compatible to USB 2.0 in case you were questioning the interface of the SSD.

NICE!
Exactly what I want/need. Lots of space
Will this get Ice Cream Sandwich?
We are kind assuming (and massively hoping) that it will get ICS. Honestly though, I'm thinking that if ICS was released, there would be some devs who would make a custom rom with it if Asus decides to screw us over..

I9505 vs Nexus 5| Kitkat Google edition| Ubuntu desktop| media hub question

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question, probably not? Please replace.
I now have a Galaxy S2 with android 2.3, with ubuntu 12.04 desktop running on it(complete linux installer), together with an MHL adapter I can have a dektop experience on every screen that has HDMI input.
But, OTG does not work on my S2(ROM thing I think?), anyway OTG and MHL simultaniously would never work, because of the 5 pin usb restriction.
Anyway, I want to buy a new phone, but I am not sure which one to buy, I have done a lot of research, but missing some parts.
What I want:
- Kitkat google edition, because it's so clean right?
- OTG and MHL(HDMI out) simultanious, for mouse, keyboard, hdd, a lot of other usb devices and hdmi out.
- Full Ubuntu desktop running
In the first place I would buy a Nexus 5, because of Kitkat Google edition. Maybe later one of the first phones with "official ubuntu for android by Canonical", snapdragon 800 processor 2.2 GHz quad-core 2GB Ram, but, it has only 16GB or 32GB, which is not extendable! And not simultanious OTG and MHL(HDMI out) support, so I cannot add an usb stick or a HDD when I am connected to a screen. Conclusion very limited memory.
Then the other option is the Samsung S4 I9505, snapdragon 600 1.9 GHz quad-core(little bit slower), 2GB ram, extendable memory. And the great thing is that the S4 has a 11 pin usb, this way you can connect the official SAMSUNG multimedia dock(3x usb, hdmi, mini-jack, charging). I would like to run Kitkat google edition on it, then my next question is, would linux/ubuntu run on this? Because I saw that people had some problems with running ubuntu desktop version on the S4?
Conclusion:
Nexus awesome phone, but does not support OTG and MHL at the same time, which results in memory limitation!
S4 a little bit slower, but has it all, the question is, would the S4 with Kitkat google edition run linux on anroid image?
The thing I want to have a full desktop experience, with your phone as base, and experience on every screen you want to. When I am at school, in the train, at home(desktop place), at home(as smart tv or so), add a coreless tablet/touchscreen later?
Or these the only option? Any other genius ideas?
Cheers

Z4 tablet extra usability?

Hi. I'm deciding to buy a Sony Xperia Tablet Z4 because it was love at first sight. However, since it has only 1 micro usb port, that limits her expansion by a lot. I'm also planning to buy the tablet with her original keyboard and that also has a micro usb but I don't know if I can use that keyboard port to add a usb hub or it's just for charging. The final setup that I dream of is this (if possible): have the Z4 tablet attached to the keyboard with that hub using the tablet or the keyboard micro usb port, one mouse for more ease of use and productivity and the card reader from the micro usb hub as a way to transfer photos from my camera to the tablet. Yes, I know I should buy a laptop but I just want to travel light and also have some Lightroom editing on the go. You can also recommend some laptops for that use, if they don't break the bank of course because I am completely clueless of which to buy. Thanks a lot in advance
Use a bluetooth keyboard (I have two, one with a mouse emulation, there are some with trackballs) I use them rarely on the Z4 ...
Don't use a proprietory keyboard: more expensive and less versatile.
Getting photos onto the tab: I use the remote control apps of the camera manufactures (Canon, Fuji).
An USB OTG cable with cardreader works fine too.
For notebooks:
I buy refurbished/demo from Lenovo or HP.
