T-Mobile US OTA update? - HTC Sensation

Why isn't there more angst about T-Mobile US releasing our version of the Sensation update?
Forums for other phones I've had would be exploding long before now that TMO is awful in all sorts of ways.
Has everyone just given up? Any idea of our prospects? Or have I missed something obvious?

Personally I don't want to see ANY TMOUS OTA. I doubt it would give us S-OFF which is want I want to see first. I think most of us are waiting on developer S-OFF and then developer ROMs/kernels/radios and could care less about carrier OTA.

+1
an OTA could ruin your chances at using a developer S-off method

I think it's awesome that there aren't seeing more threads about "when are we gonna get our update in the us....waaaahhhh"
It does nothing for us actually getting one, and as the above posters stated, it would probably leave us worse off. Although, those threads we aren't seeing, have pretty much been replaced by "s-off threads" so there's really been npthing gained

Yeah, I'm not in that group. I don't need another hobby. Besides, HTC is unlocking the phone soon. But I get your point, which I'd overlooked, that most here are only waiting on the devs, not HTC or TMO. Thanks.

I agree... I just want S-off .... no tmobile ota is needed for me.

Actually the "outrage" did prompt TMO to push out a Vibrant Froyo update sooner, and they said they would do better. So I think posting can have an impact, but I see why it's not a high priority around here at this point.

Agreed. And us veterans know we wouldn't take the update anyway.

I'll take an update for bug fixes and speed improvements in a heartbeat. I don't know what you guys are smoking, but I don't want any of it. If we had root and s-off then my song would be a little different, but the sad truth is that we don't. Plus, as I've said before this device is pretty awesome for a non-rooted device. Just make sense run a little snappier like the evo3d and I'm a happy panda.

It's not that we wouldn't want bug fixes, it's that there have been a number of other devices that lost their root and s-off exploits from OTAs. For me, it's just not worth the risk when those bug fixes will be available later via custom ROMs.

in my past experience t-mobile is notoriously bad with ota's ( my previouly phones were the g1 and the mytouch 3g and, had a vibrant for like a month then solid it. ) so i pretty much given up ota with tmobile

Because not everyone likes to whine, and almost everyone doesn't like seeing other people whine.

I'm hoping if there is an OTA, it will enable video-chat on gtalk, the nexus S has this and I thought all gingerbread devices should be able to.

Might be true. I'm new to tmo, but from what I've read and seen, they're not half as bad as att. They sucked when it change to updates, which weren't even ota, had to dl a program and update via home pc.

I couldn't care less. Don't need an OTA. Phone is solid stock. I just want S-Off.

Solid stock? Only of you dont have touchscreen issues. And i cant believe all of you guys dont have it... My 5th sensation will be here tomorrow, 1st 4 had the touchscreen issue. An OTA for touchscreen issues is very very very important. This phone has a ton of bugs.. my experience is the dev community doesn't normally fix the type of issues the sensation has. Who the ef cares if they have an s-off phone if you have to press 14 times for a 7 digit number.. Or cant scroll contacts or home screens with out opening whatever you touch 1st during the swipe. Completely unacceptable. I guess thats why they dont mind replacing my phone every week.... Since thats how long it normally takes for the touchscreen to ef up. I didnt pay etf at sprint to leave the evo for a supposedly way better phone that is slower than the evo once the touchscreen takes a poop. S-off is coming, we know this, HTC says so. Bug fixes are more important to me, we need an OTA like last month!

I'm waiting on an XDA OTA update to really fix this bad boy

Still don't understand these touchscreen issues. I've had mine since 2 days after launch and zero problems. I wish I could see it first hand.

[Poll] Returning my HTC Sensation

I decided to also make this post a poll. Will you return your HTC Sensation?
For everyone that is frustrated with the bootloader, you may want to follow suit. Don't hang onto this phone past your return policy time if you will be unhappy if it's not unlocked.
HTC haven't been able to definitively say "Yes we are unlocking the bootloader for the HTC Sensation." It seems all articles and re-posts that claim this will happen are quoting vague references and canned responses. I personally emailed them (as have many) to ask if it will be unlocked and all responses are (paraphrased) "We cannot say if it will be, but keep watching our media channels - facebook, twitter, etc". I went as far as trying to escalate to corporate (politely) and they were still unable to confirm if the HTC Sensation would or would not be unlocked.
So far zero confirmation. That's also zero confirmation on the reverse - they haven't definitively said they won't either. Grid lock.
What *has* been confirmed is that future devices will sport an unlocked bootloader. I'm willing to wait for this! This does not include the HTC Sensation or recent EVO.
I am returning my HTC Sensation to the store with 1 week left on my 30 day return policy. If they manage to deliver an unlocked bootloader between now and when the next device comes out I will gladly re-purchase the phone as the hardware and experience have been fantastic. Unfortunately being a fellow tweaker, I too want the ability to use custom roms and especially not be locked to a manufacturer's release schedule for Android updates. I went through too many let downs using a locked Motorola Android phone and will no longer be supporting locked devices full stop. Android is meant to help us be free of certain restrictions imposed by other operating systems and carriers.
I'm willing to wait for a non-bootloader locked phone with killer specs.
Sadly returning the device for now. Feel free to let us all know if you will also be, or have already returned your phone in hopeful anticipation of a completely open device.
Cheers all!
As I have said..You all are misinformed. As it was told to me was the bootloader unlocking tool will be a part of the htc dev tools site that will be launching soon. I suggest you relax, keep your phone and see how it goes. Not that serious to start a revolution over. Especially when it can be coming any day now.
No problems. I can handle the flames, but also understand that people are sick of this. We can close this thread.
holding onto the phone may not be viable if there is fear that we won't be getting bootloaders unlocked. I have a limited time frame for when I can return this phone...

I am also in the late stages of deciding to return the Sensation. It is a wonderful phone but many issues and no real answer about unlocking the bootloader(actual and factual info about when -where- and how.)and no word about updates and whether or not they will fix all of the issues. I am only speaking for me but I find it increasingly harder to keep and support a device that has numerous documented issues with no announced plan to fix them from HTC and nothing about unlocking the bootloader, except vague promises.. I also would like the link to the thread about dev tools.
If you're that sad that a locked bootloader is going to make you return your phone then you need to get out more. Get over it and just wait
No it's a great phone and works, with a few quirks, great. We already have received an update after one month so in 2-3 months we will receive the next update which will update the phone to a bug free heaven.
Besides, it's already possible to disable apps so I'm going to install Launcher Pro as soon as I'm bored with Sense. Have used Sense for 2 years on my Hero so I will survive.
This phone gonna be out g2x here i come .

You knew this phone had a locked bootloader when you bought it. It's funny how everyone is *****ing about it when they damn well knew it was locked. And what? Since HTC didnt release the unlocked bootloader a few weeks after the phone launches that's too long? Do I want my bootloader unlocked? HELL YEAH! Am I going to sit here and ***** and moan about it because HTC hasnt unlocked it yet? NO, because I knew I was buying a phone with a locked bootloader when I bought it. HTC Has said they will unlock the bootloader, they just didnt give an exact date as to when it would be unlocked. Even if HTC changes their minds, someone will get it unlocked eventually. Just look at the G2! That's never been officially unlocked..
I'm really tired of seeing all these posts with people *****ing about the bootloader.. YOU KNEW THIS WHEN YOU BOUGHT THE PHONE.. so 1. Dont buy the effing phone until it's unlocked or 2. stop *****ing that it's locked and just be patient!!! It's quite SIMPLE..
People knew it was locked but we also had the impression it would get unlocked that's the main reason people bought it. From what we hear htc aint unlocking **** , point blank they could of just told people its not going to be unlocked on Facebook and just ended it there instead of keeping hope alive. I still can live with it being locked cause i still have my ns and to think i was gonna sell it.

OMG! really? what you hear must be different from what the rest of us hear, because judging on what I read in the forums they tell everyone the same thing. They are committed to what they said and they are working on getting it going. The phone hasnt even been out for a full month yet and so many of you are crying foul on HTC's part. When I spoke to someone there, they said yes they did get a memo about informing them about the new policy. She told me the newer phones (released in late summer/early fall) will come shipped with unlocked bootloaders and they were working on an update for both the sensation and evo3d(which at the time I spoke to her wasnt even released yet). She told me the techs think it's going to be a nightmare for them because of all the noobs bricking their devices. I'm sure they already have S-off ready but right now they are trying to figure out the best way to implement it. Just because they didnt unlock it in the first 4 weeks of release doesnt mean they lied! People need to have patience. I mean they have to figure out how they are going to do it and also brace themselves and be ready for tons of noobs calling in saying they ****ed up their device. There is more to it than "hey it's ready push it out"
For example, will it be a OTA update? I think they will try to not make it so easy so every tom **** and harry could **** up their phone. Will we have to call in and request it special? will we have to send our devices into HTC and have them unlock it for us? I'm sure the logistics are what they are working on now. But how you get they are lying from all the info people have gotten is amazing. They keep saying they are standing behind it, and that there will be a update of some kind to unlock it. The only thing they havent told us is WHEN. And if they did give us a date and then couldnt make the deadline then you would be saying the same ****, that they lied and would prob be even more pissed off. I honestly dont see it happening until late aug or sept. But I'm sure by then one of us devs will break it or get a leaked Hboot

I guess you are referring to the G2x? It does have Froyo stock but I hear CM7 got a lot more stable for it(I'm going to try it again). I run Faux's GB rom on my G2x. and it's pretty stable for me.
The ram issue? Sure the G2x has only 512 but I NEVER had a time when I didnt have at least 90-100mb of free ram and that's when everything I use is open and running in the background. Someone once said if you have that much available ram at all times even when you open everything up then it's pretty much wasted ram. When I got the G2x I came from the MT4G and I was REALLY concerned about having 768 and having to go to 512. But Cyanogen himself when he got the g2x said the 512 of ram was perfectly fine and there were no issues with it having only 512. When I read that I felt better about making the switch. And yes it does have less ram than the sensation but at this point and time my G2x blows my sensation out of the water speed and performance wise. I love my sensation and cant wait until we can see what this thing can really do
You guys are nitpicking about something you already knew about. So what does that make u?
I still got the phone knowing what I was getting. I came from the g2x and the nexus s and I don't regret getting rid of both.
The bootloader will be unlocked. We have root now and overclock so take that and have fun with it. Stop being impatient. This isn't the Atrix I'm sure it won't take that long lol.
If u want it that bad....start developing the unlock yourself or sit down and Stfu.

List Of All Thunderbolt Problems Since Launch

We all know the thunderbolthas been plagued with problems since its launch. First the launch date was delayed. Now the GB update that has been delayed for months gets released and pulled immediately due to more bugs. I have read about people who complain so much that they are given free replacement phones of their choosing. I would like to do the same and try and get the new nexus phone. So I need your help with making a list of all the thunderbolt problems since launch so I can make a good argument for why I should get a new phone. Thanks guys!
Just to add my 2 cents
You have to remember that as with most forums, you usually only see the problems and not the ones with good units and that one or two people talking in a forum thread or maybe a handful of people posting multiple threads can make it seem alot worse then it really is. I have never had an issue with my bolt since getting it on launch. I was first on line at bestbuy and it has worked great since the moment I activated it.
Also the launch was not delayed. Neither HTC or Verizon gave a specific date on release. Everybody was basing the release off rumors and a mistaken bestbuy ad...
when you say 'new phone', are you trying to get Verizon to allow you to exchange your TB for something else?
if so, that's not that hard. you just need to call and complain a few times(bring up battery life & call quality - data speeds couldn't hurt to) and after a few calls & complaining about how you wish you never got this phone they should offer to exchange it for you so long as you got the phone somewhat recently.
if you bought the phone back at launch though then the most they would do(other then offer a warrenty exchange) is allow you to get a different phone at the upgrade price instead of full retail, then you'd still have your TB to sell on craigslist or something.

And if you don't actually have any problems with your phone, and are just *****ing because you want something free, you should head to wall street, I hear a lot of that is going on there.
Good luck is all i can say. I went through 3 Droids and 4 droid 2s, and an iPhone (on their suggestion) and STILL had to pay full 2 year contract price for the T Bolt. VZW isn't like att you barely get anything for free EVER

The thunderbolt was the best choice at the time and I don't see any reason to change it now. Nothing newer is too much better. I think the bionic looks and feels cheaper and that's before you consider the locked bootloader... major con for me... the grass ain't always greener. Just sayin.

Charge would be nice, but if I want one bad enough ill buy one. Trying to get one for free is lame.

You need to stop believing all the internet crap you read. I've had a couple of phones that were FAR, FAR worse than the Thunderbolt and I never got free upgrades to replace them. The people that say they did probably took an early upgrade on another line. I ended up going back to old phones with the POS devices. So yeah, if you think I calling them liars or misrepresenting the truth, that's EXACTLY what I'm doing. And I know for a fact none of them can prove it.

The ONLY reason why they gave me a bionic is they tried to charge me twice for not returning a defective device two separate times. Even then I had to fight them for it, first they offered to pay my data for a month. I guess their logic was "sorry we tried to steal $1200 from you, here's $30".
There was no early upgrade or anything, I told the guy to just cancel my contact. I had no intention of canceling, look what else is out there. If you really think you can get a free phone just because of the issues you've had with it good luck.

That's certainly above and beyond a few complaints about a device that works otherwise! Wow... That's pretty screwed up.
Problems with the Thunderbolt (STOCK)
Now granted i dont know if verizon has pushed any radio upgrades, i do that myself and the first radio upgrade i got fixed my issue.
1. GPS takes forever to lock. I walk in with a friend tried to get him a discount and showed him how MY thunderbolt wil lock in seconds where the thunderbolt, charge and nearly every other android phone they have took over 5 minutes to lcok (i never locked before we left).
2. Battery life on the stock is disgusting in comparison to clean ROMs. (my opinin you shouldnt have to root the phone to get all the specs to work correctly)
thats really all i can think of.
My main issue with this phone is battery life when on a sense based rom (any sense based rom sucks battery life a really fat guy with a milkshake), but I have an upgrade on my account and am definitely grabbing a nexus when it comes out

Lol its dumb but its life. I dont support it nor am i against it. I had HTC Touch Pro 2 i had for over 2 years. It was a fantastic phone for the era that the Iphone came out. Sure apps were very very few and far between but being able to get ROms that were similar to HTC's 2.1 or3.0 was awesome. The only problem i ever had with the phone was i was plagued with BSOD's constantly after unlocking. But as we all know its based on the phone you get, my brother and sister both had them and were unlocked overclocked and had 0 problems...again i know where the guys coming from we all play the system at one point or another to get what we want. He was just a little more blunt about it than most people would have been. Next time bro just be a little more incognito about the whole idea behind it. Its like Backtrack. Its a tool to "test your wireless security" and you know 80% of the people that use the tool are not testing their secruity with it.
It's threads like this that made me remember why I left in the first place. I had hoped things had changed... guess not...

ICS future for the Atrix 2 gloomy?

Talked with a Motorola rep via support webchat who said that they "don't know" if an update for ICS will come to this phone. This is highly disappointing. Does anybody have any other information? I am considering returning it if they back out on it (as I am still within the return period). Maybe AT&T has a better answer?

Unfortunately no AT&T does not have a better answer, actually it is worse. I got the "We are working very hard to have ICS ready for all phones that have the capability, and we don't have any dates to reveal for any phones upgrade to ICS". I then also got the "We have 4 phones getting ready to be released in the next 60 days that will have ICS already on them".
I also asked around at corporate, and I can not get any of the people I work with there to give my any information at all on ICS one way or the other, for any phone.
Don't worry though ports are on the way, I know that both lfaber06 and I will be working to get a real port of it over ASAP. In fact he has a true pre-alpha version already posted this morning.

Major bummer, considering this phone is only about 2 months old. Either way, I love the phone and I'm keeping it for as long as its functional!

If you think this phone is too plasticy...then your best bet would be an HTC phone. I think the Atrix 2 is very solid feeling.

Ok lets see if I have this straight
You want to return the Atrix 2 when they don't even have the ICS update for the Motorola Razor yet and it's guaranteed? Me, I'm waiting for the Atrix 2 and here is why.
Google states that phones that run 2.3 can run ICS and it's up to the manufacturer to push the upgrades out. What manufacturer is going to push the hardest to get their handsets running ICS
Motorola/Google hands down

Not so fast there.... you are forgetting AT&T is the carrier, and they HAVE to do the actual ROM build, MOTO will give them all of the needed firmware and drivers and such, but it is AT&T who actually does the final build and approval for the releases, what we get off the MOT dev sites, actually is a joint effort from both Moto and AT&T.
I have direct information that if the Atrix 2 gets an ICS build, and IF is the word here, it will not be right away.
Why? You will most likely ask. It is becuase they (Moto and AT&T) are more interested in "Selling" you another more expensive phone, with ICS already on it. Both MOTO and AT&T don't get anything by releasing a new version of the OS to your phone. Just because a Phone can run it, does not mean that they will make it happen. Don't wait for something that might or might not come. If that is the attitude then go get a phone that already has ICS on it, you will be much happier.
I have information that IF, this comes out it will be after June most likely, April or may possibly. This last sentence is unofficial information, the official info I got from my client is posted in the second post here.

I agree completely on the time frame. However unlike other releases this one is different for Google. They will press extremely hard and bend over backwards to help update every phone in the field they can. The why is extremely easy
This ICS build will allow Google to build for their tablet platform AND the phone platform. The more phones they convert the larger the base to attract developers. This is the first shot they have had to have a single operating system. If they update every phone that can run ICS in about a year most phones current in the lineup and still in the field will be running ICS. Most tablets will be running ICS. As for the carriers they will leap on board since Google is going to be doing the work for them. The more phones on one platform the easier it will be to support. It's truly a win/win

If Atrix 2 does get ICS, it will be a very long time before that happens, Motorola hasnt even released an update to 2.3 to fix all the damn bugs on the phone. Atrix 2 is the red headed step child.
Red-heads rock ... FYI ...
assuming the carpet matches the drapes
off-topic apologies... back to maintaining positive ICS thoughts...
From what I have read..it would seem that perhaps manufacturers and the "almighty goog" are fighting over device disk space with their proprietary interface bloatware and OS upgrades as well...hence the perpetual speak of "fragmentation" as well... too many differences and no commonality. To someone else's point, hopefully ICS can bring a closer point of unification.

Interesting point well taken, but I'd have to as you this
Assuming you are the CEO of a carrier and you are presented with two paths and only have the time to pursue one course of action.
A) Put your programmers on fixing the current system and take them off upgrading as many phones as possible to ICS, even though the bugs with the phone are minor and don't impede actually using it as a phone.
B) Concentrate on moving forward with one platform so you can decrease support costs overall and get a big fat bonus

Long time or not, as long as it comes before my contract renewal date, I'll be happy
Considering this phone came out about two months ago, I will go ahead and assume that most of us just renewed our at&t contracts to get it... I will also assume that most of us have about two years before we can renew our phones so basically, there's no rush guys lol

The biggest problem I see is that Google is in the process of buying Motorola. The issue is that during such buyouts, there are a lot of movement of people who work there. Usually a lot of instability, layoffs and/or management changes happen during this period. The end result will be that the Atrix 2 will be caught in the shuffle and so I don’t have know if ICS will ever come to this device. Motorola doesn’t even seem to care to address the many bugs as it is with this phone, much less care about ICS.

It all depends on LOE. If the LOE is less than the cost to implement with newer handsets, then it will happen. If the LOE is more than the cost to implement ICS with all new phones, then it will not happen. Look AT&T has 4 different versions of the Iphone that all can run 5 different versions of IOS, and there is not a way to FORCE anyone on an older Iphone to upgrade, becuase there was not OTA until IOS 5.
Support is not a big issue for the carriers, because they really don't support the devices the manufactures do.
You need think way higher than just google and android in this equation and the fact that AT&T still has to support ANY handset (on their network) that has been sold through AT&T or Cingular since 3g rolled out. There are guys at corporate AT&T that still carry the first HTC Tytn phone (the first 3g phone on cingular / AT&T), because it was a beast for the time, and since it is still 3g, and works, AT&T has to provide support for it. Now are there updates from AT&T or HTC, no, but that is why this community is here. Those guys are all running some form of windows mobile 6 on it, so is it the latest, no, does it do the job, yes.
Again ICS might or might not come (at this point the LOE says no, most likely not), I can't spell it out for you any clearer than that or I will no longer have my current customer. I have way more information than I am letting on, that I can not release at this time.
Motorola has issued very few statements about devices that will be on the upgrade path to ICS and the ones that were stated are on Verizen and they havnt even been given a specific date as to when to expect the update.
AT&T has a very good record at getting updated to their devices and doing it in a timely manner compared to the other carriers. Look at the phones on Verizen and tell me how many are up to date and running Gingerbread 2.3.5 or higher, very few. Heck their famed Thunderbolt is still trying to get the Gingerbread update going. The OG Atrix recieved the Gingerbread update before 90% of all other phones had.
Im not confirming nor denying that we will get it but we have a very good chance considering AT&T's track record even though they are being tight lipped about things and I personally think we will. But hey I have been proven to be wrong also
So if Jim says May - mid summer I say that is acceptible in my books. Has anyone seen a PROVEN date as to the other devices yet? NO. We all just have to be patient and see how the events play out. Hope everyone has a good day!

That is exactly what I have been trying to get across, Thanks! I also want to note that the carriers are not the ones that really care about which OS a phone is on or if it is up to date, just that it does not harm their network.
AT&T is really trying to get phones updated as soon as they can, if it is a feasible LOE. And they do have a good track record of doing so.

An official ICS release. \\This is not news, tips or how-to's.\\

I better get an ice cream sandwich after having to deal with your crap HTC. This device was full of flaws when I bought it. That was inexcusable after paying top dollar for it. Verizon (Ripoff Mobile, Inc.) was too uptight to do anything about it. I would not be surprised if all the official talk was nothing more than hot air in the end. At least developers are working on a version. I am so glad I finally had some time to get root permissions on this phone. Did you feel betrayed after buying your TBolt? To be honest, I would have bought a marked down model if I had of know ahead of time what was going to happen.

Easy killer. My phone has worked mostly fine since day one. Sure there were some software issues (random reboots due to the LTE radio, GPS, the most annoying), but that is to be expected when you buy bleeding edge technology. This was the first Verizon LTE smartphone, EVER.
That being said, the device is still on par with other top devices today. I haven't upgraded, because I haven't found another device I like that much better than this. The Nexus is nice, but I'm not big on the light flimsy build of those phones, plus samsung is notorious for poor reliability. Motorola screen's have been awful so far, or I would have considered the Razr Maxx.
Bottom line...why don't you cry about it...
BTW, there is nothing special about ICS. Sure it's nice to have the newest thing, but there really isn't that much to get excited about. I still don't understand why honey comb and ICS got rid of the search button. I use that thing constantly.
I have to say I've been 99% happy with this phone since release.
The 1% was the odd rebooting issue I had for 4 weeks in aprilish.

Honestly I've liked this phone since I first got it, battery life sucked but that was nothing rooting and loading a rom couldn't fix. Other than that I'm still happy with my purchase.
I especially like it cause me and my girlfriend got phones from a good batch, handles low voltages and overclocking even up to 1.8 (not needed though) perfectly.
Thanks to all the developers who have been developing for the thunderbolt since day one, and all that are continuing to do so!

Let's see.
1. The phone was the Flagship phone for LTE and was released with Froyo.
2. The phone was buggy at release and still shows some issues.
3. Not everyone's phone was "perfect out of teh box". Some of us had to get replacements multiple times to get a *good one*.
4. ICS does have improvements over Froyo and GB.
5. Official OTA release of ICS will allow devs to create much better ROMs for this phone, rather approaching it by piecemealing parts from other Official ROMs.
6. Lastly, this phone was sold at a premium price and VZW's/HTC's support has been lackluster to be kind about it.
Note: I don't know the OP from Adam, but your experience, like mine, is anecdotal and not indicative of all others. VZW screwed the pooch on the roll-out and
HTC screwed the pooch on the releases of updates, support and finally, by rushing the damn thing out the door before it was ready.

That's with any phone these days. I haven't had a single smartphone I haven't had to replace for one reason or another.
On a side note, the Tbolt isn't the only flagship phone with problems. The Galaxy Nexus has really bad call connectivity problems from what I hear, and that's supposed to be the MAIN function of a PHONE. lolz
All i will buy is htc. I know updates are slow to come. I also dont care. The newest isnt always the best, there are usually a fresh set of bugs to work out. That being said, the devs here and other sites give me enough variety to satisfy me. If you dont like the process, learn to code.

If you care, go call them and say what you said directly as it will do far more good for you and for the community.
I moved onto a Nexus, but I still use my Thunderbolt for development testing apps I make. Not even the Nexus is perfect though as the internal antennas are not as powerful at picking up data. My db is usually 10-15db worse than the thunderbolt. However, I would not trade my Nexus for any other phone as I got tired of having to wait on HTC and Verizon for updates on the Thunderbolt.
i just lol at this thread.
Im an HTC fan. I got my tbolt on launch day and have never had an issue (not saying some havent) but I couldn't be happier.
Still have yet to find one phone on the market that has everything the tbolt has (not including dual core, which has not really impressed me) and still think it is a top 4g phone.
I would buy it all over again. We have received everything promised so far & it would be a nightmare for HTC to not give us ICS after they confirmed it...
I also have to say that Verizon did not screw up or delay the launch. There was never an official launch date given from them or HTC until the week before release, as is the norm with their releases. All other dates were made up by the internet and people.
HTC released about 6 updates to the phone between march and September, I think that is pretty good at keeping on top of it..

Everyones phone is gonna be better or worse than the next guy. Did we get screwed by Verizon??? Show me where in writing the promise a full ICS upgrade and you will see thousands of TB owners lining up to sue the piss off Verizon and HTC.
If you are gonna stay up on the newest devices, Hopefully you are not paying retail for the devices, Shop around and you will be amazed at what you can find.
I have a galaxy nexus just sitting on stand-by cause i've had no problems with my tbolt, besides the dev slowing down i really have no problems with my tbolt and has been my favorite phone. while it would be nice to get ICS soon im not tripping about it, my contract for the thunderbolt ends in december much wait and see what comes out by then.

On another note, my brother got the same phone and has had problems. Just like any other electronic item, you might get a dud.

We may need a campaign of annoyance...

Folks,
There's been no word, no dates given or leaked about the ICS update we're supposed to be receiving. Samsung has said we're supposed to get the update, but T-Mobile has been quiet. Hell, Samsung just announced that the GS2 will be getting JB and they've been working on it. I don't know how well that translates to the T-Mobile variant of the GS2, but it's still something. All we need is a kernel and some camera drivers. Hell, we could probably get away without the camera drivers and mangle the old ones using a compatibility HAL..
It is starting to feel like T-Mobile is simply going to forget the blaze. I mean, they released an update already, why would they hurry on to the next update...
I think if we're going to get something for nothing, we'll have to make noise about it. Same way we got this forum. I think it's going to take bugging t-mobile on the forums and on their support lines. You people on contract have it worse. You bought a really powerful phone in the presence of ICS, some of you after the promise that it would receive the update. T-Mobile wouldn't suffer penalties if they didn't push it, but I imagine they'll respond to some social pressure enough not to simply forget the update.
Hell, it'd be nice if we could even just get a date.
I agree with you. At this point I'd be happy with some sort of update from Samsung/T-Mobile. Even if they just said "we're still working on it" and gave no ETA at least we'd know they hadn't forgotten about it.
If the Blaze Q whatever the hell they've decided to call it launches here in a few weeks with ICS and we still don't get the software I will be ticked.
If push comes to shove and they don't release it can the devs port it or JB from another galaxy phone?
Correct me if I'm wrong but my understating is that it can but would take a lot of work and all are holding off since ICS is supposed to be dropping at anytime. No sense in going thru all that work only to have an official release dropped on us.

I completely agree with you. To be honest, I am already pissed off that they still havent released it. When I got this phone, T-Mobile promised I was going to get an ICS update in July. Yeah, so much for that. At the very least they could acknowledge our presence and let us know that they havent forgotten about us

The problem is the kernel and libraries specific to our hardware. We have to have a working kernel and libraries before the rest of the rom can come.
I'm not sure why people thought the Blaze Q would've been a good thing for us because unless the hardware was identically similar (which no one had any proof that it was), the releases for that phone would've been useless for ours. The fact that it's now coming with a 720p display (I would've stayed with my Blaze 4G if it had that), and a keyboard tells me that there will be PLENTY different between the phones.
Hardware-wise, the T769 (Blaze) is EXTREMELY similar to the T989 (T-Mo SGS2). How similar you ask? In the original kernel configuration file for the T769, the options are set to build it as a T769 AND T989. There are a few ifdefs that exist purely to stop little snippets of the T989 code from taking effect.
I worked on my own time to try and hack together a kernel from the released sources for the T989 for ICS. Porting specific code from the T769 sources to try to come up with something that worked. Here's the problem: it was stressful and thankless, and at the end of it all I had a kernel that would compile and not boot. No one collected anything to help me attempt this and I was getting tired of having a non-functioning phone that pissed me off. So I ordered me a Galaxy Nexus. I received 2 in a row with screen issues and ended up returning them. I figured I would return to my efforts with the blaze, but at that point I was used to the big phone with a beautiful 720p resolution... so I shelled out the money for a GS3.
I have thought of returning and making a second attempt to port the kernel, and have actually started setting up to do just that. I think I made some mistakes my first time around, so the second time might actually work. But it is A PAIN.

Yeah, a 720p screen would have been nice... thanks for the detailed explanation.
I still find it comical that my old HD2 is on the verge of having a fully functional JB rom but my brand new Blaze is still stuck on GB.
Honestly if I could've afforded it I would have probably gone the Nexus or S3 route but given my limited funds and needing to cover two phones (wife needed an upgrade) I thought this was the best value ($30 upgrade cost at Target).

T-Mobile hasn't updated their page for a month now, and that was for the Gingerbread update they released when they could have been making headway on ICS. I can't find out how to submit any new pages, but I can see two requests for an update that were a couple months old (click on the link, then read on the right side in section "Incoming Links") source = http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4182
I went to Samsung's page about ICS updates, and rated it "very dissatisfied," informing them they should have supplied target Year and Quarter (i.e. 2012 Q3) at the minimum, but preferably a specific month. source = http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00046726&fm_seq=49755
Let's continue to put pressure on these assholes, or they will sweep us under the bus while they pursue development of the Samsung Galaxy Supernova 4G Touchwiz Xtra 4.1.
Not to be a **** ... but what's the rush? What's wrong with the software on your phone now? I've had this Blaze for a couple months and I don't think I ever had a problem. I have ICS on a tablet and like it, but I never felt like I needed to light the torches and march on the castle because I didn't have the latest **** on my phone.
And honestly, if a delay of an update for a great phone that works perfectly fine is what keeps you up at night, just wow...
If I am missing something critical here that I should know about (phone will explode without ICS ROM installed, I have a higher risk of cancer if I don't have ICS on phone, etc) please let me know immediately. I have poster boards, Sharpies, and a willingness to assemble if needed.

Nope, just a league of people whining because that makes things happen faster. There really is nothing more to it.
I'll be the first to admit I've become a bit jaded because of my experiences with T-Mobile / Samsung and the Samsung Vibrant.
I heard promises about updates to that phone - they even set dates and pushed them back and back and back and finally... nothing.
If anything I think the release of the Blaze Q is a strike against us because our phones are now the "out dated" version of the Blaze and why put development hours into an "old" device.
I'm happy that I have a fully functional phone as it is now (the Vibrant never really had a fully working GPS). An update would be nice but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it because honestly, you may just be setting yourself up for a lot of sleepless nights.
Oh, and on the Vibrant Forum they started a twitter campaign #NeverAgain demanding the promised upgrade or they would never use T-mobile or Samsung again. No one listened.
I know this all sounds cynical but I've seen this show before.
Edit to add: If memory serves correctly this was also the case with the Behold on T-mobile.
Hey i know im new here, but i was wondering if you guys have only attempted to port ics roms from the SII? Ive tried to do the same and only recieved a glittery sparkly screen. I was wondering if anyone tried other devices with similar hardware like the HTC amaze 4g. I tried to port that one and actually got the boot animation to pop up. I havent tried to do any logcats or anything because i have been to busy and i need my phone for work, but if anyone else has tried to port from other devices i would like to know so i can know where to start if i do decide to try again.

The reason you get a glittery screen when coming from roms that are like the SGS2 is because they use different display panel hardware than we do. I'd be careful porting things from different manufacturers unless you really know what you're doing. You'd hate to go and format some partitions you can't get back

What happens when more "cool new apps" are released to the market that require Android 4.0 API's or better? Chrome immediately comes to mind, and there are others with many more on the way. What happens 4 months from now when you are only 6 months into your 2 year contract and you're wondering why you can't realistically run things on your phone that has 1 gig of ram and a dual-core 1.5ghz cpu?
And honestly, btw... I had a myTouch 4G running CM7 that felt miles faster than my blaze. The samsung crapware is not only bloated, but breaks the system in a number of places. You can see this in the fact that you can't have a scrollable wallpaper, or that the system doesn't understand all the loop points in ringtones that work properly in other phones. I can't tell you how frustrated I get by an unlock and/or answer mechanism that can't track my fingers in real time like something as simple as CM7 does.
And don't get me started on the underutilisation of the video hardware.

No, this phone was released with a promise. When it was released, ICS had been out for 6 months or more, and I'm sure the OEMs had access to the system and API's well before the official release. By the time ICS is released for our phones (IF it is released for our phones), JB will have been out for several months.
This is a matter of support and broken promises. I am NOT just whining. I was sold a phone with a promise of ICS and it has NOT been delivered, and at this point the time has gone beyond reasonable.
If we don't make noise now, it WILL be forgotten and you're going to end up with a phone outdated well before it's time.

Yeah the first time i tried to flash the rom nothing happened. ahah but then i went into the updater script changed some things and got it to flash. but since the hard ware is the same do you think i could use the display drivers from the amaze 4g and replace them in the SII rom and maybe it will work? well maybe i will have to do some logcats to see why the amaze rom isnt booting.

I doubt it. The drivers are baked into the kernel, they aren't modules or libraries. You'd have to get another compiled kernel working for our device, and you'll undoubtedly lose other drivers (camera, wifi come to mind). It's, of course, up to you to brick your own phone

Well cant you decompile a kernel? or maybe if i get the source of both devices i can use the code to compile a new kernel... hmmm all stuff to try. but compiling a kernel takes a while i think ill update my PC first haha. Im not necessarily worried about the other drivers not working, i just want to make progress, or at least help us make a push in the right direction. Im sorry if im being too optimistic or noobish, i just want to learn what people have and havent tried, so i dont waste my time on what has already been done.

Try sending an email to [email protected] and ask (nicely) about a status update on the ICS update for our phone! I just sent one, and hopefully if we send enough we can get some traction
