FPSE vs. Official Emulator: Hot Shots Golf 2 - Xperia Play Themes and Apps

I wanted to compare, on a stock, untouched ROM, the performance of FPSE and Sony's official emulator rendering the same game. I chose Everybody's Golf 2 (Hot Shots Golf 2), paid for it on the Market and downloaded a backup to use with FPSE. One could imagine that, since the game, the emulated console and the official emulator are made by the same company, the official emulator would win hands down.
One would be wrong.
The paid-for game stutters sometimes while executing a stroke, and the input lag was noticeable. Moreover, the game slowed to a crawl in the animations after finishing a hole, and when several keys were pressed in a short time. The game was of course playable, but it wasn't 100% fluid, which is an unacceptable outcome given the price of the game.
On the other hand, FPSE's rendition was flawless. No stutters, no input lag, no post-hole slowness, and I could smash the buttons as much as I wanted without any slowness.
I am appalled by this outcome. Certainly I like good golf games, like HSG2, which is vastly superior to GameLift's Let's Golf 2 e.g. However, I want a proper user experience, which a lagging game doesn't deliver. I'm not going to buy any nore PSX titles.

Sony official emulator? where do i get this?!

It's built into the Xperia Play.
........................................
Thanks for the observations Logseman.
I'm sure this won't be the case with every game, but nevertheless, it is troubling.
I think it points to the limitations of the Play's hardware, the officiall Sony Emu on PSP is flawless for everything I have tried. Can't help but feel they should have made the Play just a 'little' bit more powerful.

Hardware-wise, the Xperia Play has technology at least 5 years younger than the PSP one, not to mention the boost in processing speed and RAM memory. Plus, FPSE runs in the same hardware flawlessly. I would say it's a matter of implementation.

Very interesting, I'll try this with destruction derby tonight, I just assumed it was a mixture of things running in the background that was making it juddery!

Destruction Derby runs really, really fast for me in FPSE.
If you put smoothing on it works perfect and looks amazing.
It's the only game I've really been able to play with smoothing on though, which is a shame because it really cleans up the jaggies.

Where is smoothing?

I think he means screen filtering

Logseman i dont really have any of the issue that you have brought up, if i get a txt while im playing the game, i get 10-15 seconds of slowdown after, but it seems to sort itself out

Riptide GP is in the market!

Pretty good game. Getting some artifacting in the graphics every once in a while. Big colored polygons in the sky which actually prevent you from seeing where you're going at times. Anyone else get that?
Sweet find thanks. Just bought it.
Works fine as far as GFX goes, but it keeps randomly pausing during a race....?
Anyone else getting random pauses?
No pauses here...try turning the graphics down in settings.....however i run it with graphics all the way up without issue.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
with graphics all the way up the framerate is is very crappy , in my opinion there shouldnt be a option to turn down the graphics to gain performance when your promoting how advance the tegra chip is.
It's playable on max settings but pull it all the way to the bottom and you'll notice how much more fluid it is, possibly giving you a greater sense of speed.
I dont see how you guys stand the controls on these games. Maybe its because i am from the NES age buti suck with motion controls. Sad because it keeps me from playing some good stuff on here.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
this game needs multiplayer, its good game for about 15 minutes or so then never to be played again other . multiplayer would bring hours of enjoyment if they ever implamented it
I was a big Hyrdo Thunder Game. I played it when it was on the PS1.
When Xbox Live had Hyrdo Thunder last summer I downloaded. A pretty good game for Xbox live and looks good Full HD.
I knew the guys that made Hydro Thunder was the same ones that made Riptide.
I played the Need for Speed Shift game on a the Best Buy Acer Tablet. I was trying to figure out which game. I ended up going with Riptide, just because it seems like it would be a little more fun over all. (I was never sure if NFS would work on the Transformer).
The Riptide game is for the most part just like Hydro Thunder. Thats good and bad.
Good because you know what you are getting. No real surprises.
Bad, nothing really that knew. Instead of collecting Boost like you do in Hyrdo Thunder, in Riptide you do tricks off of jumps. Not bad, but takes some getting use to. I do get some flicker problems a couple of times. But Over all no real problems. I'm trying to figure out how much Battery power this uses.
Over all I think it is worth the money if you are looking for a good arcade racer.
Their isn't a lot here. You are racing a jet ski around a course.

android apps?

I am purely expressing my opinion here, so care to agree or disagree with what I'm saying. Just curious as to what others think.
But is it me or do the android games on the market really suck? Give or take a handfull of them that have good graphics and gameplay, the rest are pretty much horrid. The graphics level is worse than the gameboy color when it first came out. And the gameplay isn't that great too. I've seen a couple of games that really utilize the graphics on an eco, but only 3 in a 1000. The games on my ipod are way better than most if the market, yet the ipod touch is almost 3 years behind some of these new htc devices. I love my eco, and think the android platform is much better than the iPhones, but I wanted tosee everyone else's opinion on this topic.
No our games are poor in comparison but our apps are comparable if not better. In fairness I don't play many games on here. I have a air hockey game and words with friends and that's it. If I want to play a game on here though I grab a rom for some old nintendo game I loved and play it on a the emulator.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
That's generally true and the reason for it is pretty obvious. Apple has a very stringent filter compared to Google about what goes onto the market. So basically the barrier to entry is much lower on android. With a lower barrier to entry, you end up with more low quality software.
Well, it also depends what u play.
To me, n64oid is beast.
Any Nintendo 64 game plays well. Including Starfox 64 and Mario Karts 64.
Then you have the Tegra Zone. Those games run smooth with the NVIDIA plugin on CF3D.
@Jesus,
I never actually thought about the, the whole low barrier thing. But even then, the top paid games, like ronodefence for example, are complete trash.
I also agree that the actual apps, not games, are far more customizable and awesome than sole will ever be haha.

N64oid V2.0 Released !

Has anyone tried it for the Play yet?
Apparently most games run smoothly now and the compatibility list just grew to nearly all games.

Aww it's not free? It's $3.99 on SlideME http://slideme.org/application/n64oid
Meh, if it included full touch pad support I'd buy it. Sticking with the free one I have currently when it was pull off the Android Market.
Easily worth the $4 if those claims are true!
Hope you can save controller config/settings for each game like in FPSE. N64 games have a huge variety of differing control option since there were 2 ways to hold the pad, so this would be very useful.
Alright, I've gone through all the slideme bull**** and purchased the upgrade. I'm here to give you feedback of my discoveries.
First to note, no, no touchpad support.
Second, only one new option has been added to the settings, and that's to switch between the new and the old gfx rendering engines. I also find that the frameskip option actually does something in this version.
First game, Super mario 64. So far, runs about the same, but then again it ran perfect before. One thing to note, stars show up on the doors now.
Zelda OoT; plays significantly smoother, no more huge sound raping during the title screen, or running around the kokori forest. However, the pause menu is still a mess, and you can no longer exit it without having the game lock up. Luckily, switching the GFX rendering option to "old" fixes this. More frame skipping is apparent though. Edit: I've found that another version of the rom doesn't freeze. well, it is still unstable, but it's better.
Mario Party 3; Oddly my save game remains on this one..only game so far. Runs near perfect it seems, frameskip taking care of most audio skippage that was present before.
Mario Kart 64; Pretty similar, runs smoother though, completely playable. Does the odd freezeframe while gameplay keeps going..didn't stop me from winning the cup but I can see this being extremely annoying if it happened to do it at a crucial time.
Smash Brothers: THEY HAVE FACES!!! Otherwise, seems to chug a lot more when 4 players are on the screen than the old gfx renderer. 2 players is fine.
Wave Race: Smoother during title screens etc, can get a little chunky in races but playable i suppose.
Conkers Bad Fur Day: Android thinks the app has crashed when opening this one. Hitting wait will resume as normal though. Game runs in it's full, no graphical glitches or anything. Too slow to be playable though.
Diddy Kong Racing: Runs pretty damn slick
Buck Bumble: completely playable
SF Rush 2: Some slight lag, Completely Playable though
Paper Mario: Runs nice so far, some graphical glitches on the title screen menus
Space Station Silicone Valley: This is a weird one..plays fine as a whole, animals have all the limbs etc. but the inside of the spacecraft is just...black...meaning the intro looked pretty weird. I'd say playable, but there are definitely some things missing...
Killer Instinct Gold: Haven't played this game before, not sure if it usually just throws you into the player select screen with 9 seconds to choose someone.. Otherwise, this player select screen is fairly glitchy looking, although you can still choose your player easy enough. The arena and characters themselves render fine, the backgrounds are pretty messed though. The slowdowns are pretty drastic, not highly enjoyable.
Fighters Destiny: Haven't played this one either, turns out I quite like it. No drama here, plays very smooth, no sound issues, no issues at all really. The one thing to note is you'll have to change your directional keymappings from the analogue stick to the d-pad.
Zelda, Majora's Mask: Nothing wrong yet, although the motion trails seems to be lost on this emulator. There is a little more lag than Ocarina of time, but not to the point of unplayable. The menu also works perfect in this game, no graphic glitches, and no freezing.
Goldeneye 007: Little lag to be seen here. Everything seems to work fine. I found it very difficult to play with my controls setup, but I'm sure if you majorly reconstruce your controls layout it would be fine.
Perfect Dark: More lag than goldeneye, also less stable, crashed on me on two different occasions. Playable though, with same control setup as goldeneye
WCW vs. NWO: Runs in a very vague way..lots of blackness when I press start to skip the also very black or strobing black intro. Not Playable
fzero x: Completely Playable
Harvestmoon 64: Constant Black lines and splotches hinder the otherwise fine gameplay.
Requests welcome
Please, try Space Station Silicon Valley, in the old version some character models were incomplete (dogs and sheep without heads or legs, humans without arms). I want to know if it is working now

Why slideme??? Get this on the market!!! I have been waiting for months for this, have bought all of his emulators, why do I have to pay again for an update????? This is kind of ****ty.
Can someone who bought this kindly PM me the Apk? I am not paying $4 for an update I have been waiting months for.
Alpha Tappa Lambda
Just read about his emus getting pulled. I haven't checked for awhile. Anyone know how to get a hold of yongzh? It sucks that I paid 6 bucks for this. Long time ago and now have to shell out 4 more for an update. I really don't want to make a slideme account for 1 app and don't use PayPal.

What about Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, WCW vs NWO Revenge, WWF No Mercy and Zelda : Majora's Mask ?

Haven't tried on this version, but No Mercy was fine on the old version.
There were some graphical errors on the menus, and you had to use frameskip 4, but it played fine. The challenge was getting the controls setup since it practically used every button!
ps. still the best wrestling game to this day!

I did read your original post, you answered my question about fighters destiny but not Killer Instinct Gold?
Red_Kop I know that in the old version worked. But when You play a career mode there was lots of graphical glitches (in menu and tekst) - and very difficult to play. WCW vs NWO Revenge doesn't work in old version. What about new? If it's work i'm gonna buy this app .
Wanted to chime in. Just got this in the slideme market and I've played a few games on it (stock r800x verizon, so no root and stock bloatware)
Mario Kart: Smooth framerates until I hit what seems like I hit a screen freeze (game plays as normal but the screen is frozen) pressing start a few times updates the screen then the screen "catches up" with the game. This happens every 30 seconds or so
San Fransisco Rush - kinda choppy, somewhat playable, minor graphic glitches
Beetle Adventure Racing - Hey, don't knock it, it's fun! Laggy, choppy, but somewhat playable (low fps)
FZeroX - Butterysmooth and still fun as hell
Extreme G 2 - Choppy framerate, quasi-playable (if you like stuttery gameplay)

You know this is a 2.0 release right? It's in the title. New graphics engine and all that? That means the developer has put quite a bit of work into this, and you want all that work for free? If you like the product, support it. $4 is
NOT a lot of cash for the amount of enjoyment you get out of this.

Does the dedicated pad make games too easy?

After beating Samurai II in the hardest level like a breeze, and after a similarly boringly easy experience with Asphalt 6, I would like to ask you people if you share that feeling, that the Play controls make the optimised games too easy to beat, since they allow much more precision than a touch screen, and those games were designed with touch screens in mind.

I think its the other way, that touchscreen games are too hard. The controls are just not intuitive, and in some cases downright maddening.
I agree. I have clocked Samurai II in its hardest setting in a about a week playing an hour to two each day. But my friend who has Samurai II on his LG Optimus 2x has been playing it for well over a month and he still cannot beat the final boss lol, even on the easiest setting (maybe he just sucks).
I also prefer using the gyroscope or w/e it uses to control the car on Ashphalt 6. Its way to easy to drive with the controls. Its alot more challenging without. I guess we are gonna be stuck with touch screen games being optimised for use with the controls.
I like the way how the pad allows me to win every game of rainbow six online.
Hell, wasn't the gamepad making things easier for you to win against others online even part of SE's marketing for the Play?
I'm still not used to the pads but I do love the buttons.
The controls far improve any game that I have also played on the touch screen. Controlling the game shouldn't be part of the challenge.

I found Asphault 6 impossible to complete and unlock all the cars because of the bullcrap requirements. Getting some of the required stars was damn near impossible, after a while i just gave up and Uninstalled the game out of sheer frustration.
Please tell me your joking? your complaining because we have a PROPER gamepad to play GAMES?! There was me thinking gamepads were how games were meant to be played, wow......
Also, Asphalt 6 is honestly the only racing game I play on the Play, I've tried many others but none of them make me want to go back and play again and again like Asphalt 6 does, it is also certainly a very good looking game!
Where have I complained, pray tell?

It was tough but definitely nowhere near impossible. I have all stars on most of the game, just took a conscious effort to do them. Usually its just making sure you give every turn a good drift and smash as many opponents as possible.
Well, I just can't get used to touchpads. I've NEVER played touchscreen games a lot (only one was Angry Birds on my old X8) and I find it much easier to play BC2 on screen than on touchpads. Movements are too fast, because the small touchpad is allocated to the whole screen.
I dont like the touchpad either, but I think the problem is the way they are programed to work. They do not really work like a joystick. Im used to playing shooters on my Xbox360
Most games I have played on the pad you have to move your finger back to the middle and slide to the edge of the joystick to move the camera that direction, rather than just pressing the edge of the pad like on the left pad when moving your character position.

Confirmed
Ah... that takes me back to the first time I tried to play an FPS on a touch-screen phone. It felt like using a PS2 controller made out of jell-o while submerged in molasses. The touch-pads are a godsend... when they are used right.
Every developer making a shooting game that requires any level of precision shouldn't be allowed to call their game "Xperia PLAY Optimized" until they've played Dead Space or the latest version of Brothers in Arms 2... and made the aiming work on that level.

Symphony of the Eternity officially Xperia PLAY Optimized! Menus and all!

So if you don't know already, KEMCO has been non-stop dropping awesome RPGs on Android. If I recall correctly, these are the same people behind a lot of awesome classics like Shadowgate, Deja Vu, the Sword of Hope series and Dragon View.
Their first Android hit, however, was Symphony of the Eternity, which is currently at a near-perfect rating of 9/10.
Just by having some general keyboard compatibility, you could already control movement and NPC interaction with the Xperia gamepad, but it was imperfect because you'd still have to use the touch screen for almost everything menu related... but as of this latest release (1.0.8) it's completely Xperia PLAY Optmized! Menu control, quick map, and even the game launcher... everything works with the Xperia PLAY controls now!
It's a fantastic throwback - but has a deep enough class/technique system so that it doesn't feel outdated or RPG-Maker-ish. I beat it already, but I think this just made me happy enough to beat it one more time and master all skills with all characters!
Only $2.99, CHECK IT OUT!
I'm hoping Alphadia's up next. Put some Xperia PLAY controls on that and I'll keep the tradition going of me buying every KEMCO RPG.
Certainly now I will try it again. I bought it for the SGS, didn't beat it because it was too hard to use the touch controls, and I've been hoping to use the Play's ones. The ridiculous dialogs will not disappear though...
Seems like a pretty solid RPG in good old retro style. How I loved Shadowgate when I was little! In fact I played through it again just a month ago.
This one reminds me a fair lot of Lufia 2 for the SNES. The battle system that is. They must have taken inspiration from it. Thanks for your youtube vids! How long did it take for you to finish this game? I'm on my second Chrono Trigger playthrough at the moment and don't want to start another time consuming game before I finish it. Now I'm off to bring Crono back on Death Peak!
Looks like a game made with an old version of RPG Maker... :/
Zenonia 1, 2 and 3 are much better.
This one is a JRPG Old School game and it is fantastic in its plot and gameplay!
I love Zenonia Series, but these two are completely different in genre so you just can't compare them together.
I managed to beat it since the very first xperia play optimize released, at the time when you have to use both touch screen and d-pad on xperia game pad. The control was kinda annoyed but its story and gameplay drove me to the end of the game.
Recommended for any JRPG lovers. This one is full of twists!
Wow, the new update adds voices and makes special attacks more dramatic.
Sounds like a small thing, but the game feels a lot more "defined" now. It actually feels like it's own thing instead of just a FF clone.
