After beating Samurai II in the hardest level like a breeze, and after a similarly boringly easy experience with Asphalt 6, I would like to ask you people if you share that feeling, that the Play controls make the optimised games too easy to beat, since they allow much more precision than a touch screen, and those games were designed with touch screens in mind.

I think its the other way, that touchscreen games are too hard. The controls are just not intuitive, and in some cases downright maddening.
I agree. I have clocked Samurai II in its hardest setting in a about a week playing an hour to two each day. But my friend who has Samurai II on his LG Optimus 2x has been playing it for well over a month and he still cannot beat the final boss lol, even on the easiest setting (maybe he just sucks).
I also prefer using the gyroscope or w/e it uses to control the car on Ashphalt 6. Its way to easy to drive with the controls. Its alot more challenging without. I guess we are gonna be stuck with touch screen games being optimised for use with the controls.
I like the way how the pad allows me to win every game of rainbow six online.
Hell, wasn't the gamepad making things easier for you to win against others online even part of SE's marketing for the Play?
I'm still not used to the pads but I do love the buttons.
The controls far improve any game that I have also played on the touch screen. Controlling the game shouldn't be part of the challenge.

I found Asphault 6 impossible to complete and unlock all the cars because of the bullcrap requirements. Getting some of the required stars was damn near impossible, after a while i just gave up and Uninstalled the game out of sheer frustration.
Please tell me your joking? your complaining because we have a PROPER gamepad to play GAMES?! There was me thinking gamepads were how games were meant to be played, wow......
Also, Asphalt 6 is honestly the only racing game I play on the Play, I've tried many others but none of them make me want to go back and play again and again like Asphalt 6 does, it is also certainly a very good looking game!
Where have I complained, pray tell?

It was tough but definitely nowhere near impossible. I have all stars on most of the game, just took a conscious effort to do them. Usually its just making sure you give every turn a good drift and smash as many opponents as possible.
Well, I just can't get used to touchpads. I've NEVER played touchscreen games a lot (only one was Angry Birds on my old X8) and I find it much easier to play BC2 on screen than on touchpads. Movements are too fast, because the small touchpad is allocated to the whole screen.
I dont like the touchpad either, but I think the problem is the way they are programed to work. They do not really work like a joystick. Im used to playing shooters on my Xbox360
Most games I have played on the pad you have to move your finger back to the middle and slide to the edge of the joystick to move the camera that direction, rather than just pressing the edge of the pad like on the left pad when moving your character position.

Ah... that takes me back to the first time I tried to play an FPS on a touch-screen phone. It felt like using a PS2 controller made out of jell-o while submerged in molasses. The touch-pads are a godsend... when they are used right.
Every developer making a shooting game that requires any level of precision shouldn't be allowed to call their game "Xperia PLAY Optimized" until they've played Dead Space or the latest version of Brothers in Arms 2... and made the aiming work on that level.

The game looks awesome. Reminds me of my mini RC cars I use to race against my cousin
Anybody played it yet? Impressions?
I know that it has good graphics and all but with out any type of multiplayer I just can't see me paying 8 bucks for it
Looks cool but not sure its $8 cool.

Just made the plunge, overall the graphics are nice, the game plays smooth, the only thing to get used to are the controls, you use your thumb in front of the car to street and accelerate/decelerate. Overall I enjoy it and now am looking forward to riptide gp and galaxy on fire 2.

I purchased and then uninstalled within 15 mins as I don't like the way you control it, was using a stylus which was better than using a finger but would have preferred an alternative choice for control.

Tell you the truth I've never even purchase an app from android market before. Mainly some of them I want to see how it's like before I buy it. I know they're mostly cheap, but still would like a demo. I wouldn't pay for most games since my psp and ps3 is for that, but some useful apps I would pay for. I didn't know they have this 15 minutes return policy. Does it work for all apps? most? I might try it, but 15 minutes is not a lot of time to try out software. They should make it 30 minutes.
For 8 bucks it should have sone kind of multiplayer, so imma pass on this one

Yes i agree 15 mins is rubbish if you truly want to try software that has a lot of features, it used to be 24 hrs but was changed by Google after complaints from developers as far as know. The main thing is that we still have an option to cancel.
Who knows, the game may have been ok if I played it longer and became acquainted with the controls but I was not willing to pay £5 and on top of that they added VAT which I don't think used to be the case because I remember only paying the price that the market showed.
They should of made it like reckless racing which has many different methods of control.
think this has great potential but i agree with the majority, the controls really need different method options, the one you have to use sucks
Reckless racing has HD graphics and cross platform multiplayer with iPhone. The start screen isn't HD but the actual game is. And the price for the game is FTW
So the Reckless Racing Play is the HD version? Does it work well on the Transformer?
I sent an email to the developers of Bang Bang Racing about the control scheme. They replied indicating that an update with different control schemes would be available soon.
My review and comparison to Reckless Racing
I have played reckless racing, and now this. I am a big fan of racing games, especially top down racing games. Both reckless racing and bang bang racing lack a lot of depth and features to make them amazing. I'll abbreviate each game with BB and RR
1. Controls. BB uses a very unique control scheme. You point in the direction you want to go, and the farther the distance your finger is from your car, the faster you go. This takes some getting used to, but ultimately is a very fun way to play. The biggest downside of the control scheme is that since you always have your finger in front of the car, you are constantly blocking some of the screen in front of you. RR on the other hand has multiple control options, but not all of them are optimized for tablet use. There are standard controls with the left/right buttons on the left. There's tank controls with a left button on the left side of the screen and right on the right side. Also, there are some tilt control and analog type steering wheel controls that don't as well. The physics of the controls are also very different. In BB, you have a lot more grip over your car, and in RR, there is a lot of drifting and skidding making it much more challenging to make the turns correctly.
2. Graphics. Both games look very good on the transformer's screen. Bang Bang Racing is a lot more colorful and cartoony, and Reckless Racing is a little more gritty and offers more texture and detail to the terrain.
3. Presentation. This doesn't matter that much, but I just wanted to complain that the menu system in BB is very annoying. You have to select an option and then press next for everything you do (unnecessary two button presses to advance each menu). Also, there is no way to restart a race when you are in the middle of racing. You have to exit back to the main menu and do the whole 2 button press menu to start over. RR menu system is much much better. BB also lacks an on screen map while playing to help see what the next turn is.
4. Gameplay. BB has 3 ways to play. Single Race, Championship, and Time Trial. RR has the same, but is missing the Championship mode where you compete in multiple races in a row trying to become the overall winner. RR does have a delivery mode kinda like crazy taxi where you pick up some stuff and deliver it. This is a good idea, but there is only one map, and it isn't very big, so there aren't a whole lot of different deliveries you can make. It would be a great idea if there was a huge map, or maybe multiple maps.
Once you're playing, there really isn't a whole lot of difference between the two. You race around the track, and try to place first. BB offers a few things like barrels and cones you can run into, but do very little to affect the race. Both games have a few minor shortcuts that you can take advantage of. BB also has a damage meter, and the ability to fix your car by driving through repair icons. The damage concept is a good idea, but I have never have completely damaged my car. You don’t even need to slow down to recharge your damage meter. RR has some areas of the track where you can fall off, and your car will reset. You also have an option of resetting manually if you get jacked up. BB offers no reset option, which is kinda unfortunate because it is easy to get completely screwed at the beginning of the race in a traffic jam.
RR offers multiplayer across android and iphone. BB offers no multiplayer, but maybe they will add it in a future update?
Both games offer different cars to play with. In RR, it's only the appearance of the car that changes. In BB racing, the different cars have speed and grip ratings to make them different.
Tracks. Overall, I like the tracks in BB better than RR. I think RR has 7 tracks (originally 5, but updates have added 2 more), and you can go in reverse for a total of 14. Some of the RR tracks are very short though. BB has 8, and can go reverse for 16. All 8 of the tracks are approximately the same size. I prefer the track design in BB better. It offers a lot more twists and turns, and they are all very good lengths.
Overall, both games are good. I like to play both of them for different reasons. RR's drifting and sliding controls offer a completely different feel, and can be frustrating to newcomers. BB has a better standard steering experience, but the controls can be very awkward for a lot of people. Obviously the price of RR is better if you only want one.
What these games need. I really wish these games would offer a little more depth in the game play. Some things that would be cool to see in a future top down racing game are: power-ups and items, required pit stops for damage and or gas, more car variation with armor and acceleration categories, and maybe even a 2 player split screen multiplayer like how fruit ninja hd did.
With regard to Reckless Racing, the controls are completely customizable so you can change the placement and size of all the on-screen buttons. Bearing that in mind, RR is infinitely better than BBR when it comes to controls.

Ah, you are right. I thought you could only change the size of the button area. You can actually move the buttons as well.
I wanted to compare, on a stock, untouched ROM, the performance of FPSE and Sony's official emulator rendering the same game. I chose Everybody's Golf 2 (Hot Shots Golf 2), paid for it on the Market and downloaded a backup to use with FPSE. One could imagine that, since the game, the emulated console and the official emulator are made by the same company, the official emulator would win hands down.
One would be wrong.
The paid-for game stutters sometimes while executing a stroke, and the input lag was noticeable. Moreover, the game slowed to a crawl in the animations after finishing a hole, and when several keys were pressed in a short time. The game was of course playable, but it wasn't 100% fluid, which is an unacceptable outcome given the price of the game.
On the other hand, FPSE's rendition was flawless. No stutters, no input lag, no post-hole slowness, and I could smash the buttons as much as I wanted without any slowness.
I am appalled by this outcome. Certainly I like good golf games, like HSG2, which is vastly superior to GameLift's Let's Golf 2 e.g. However, I want a proper user experience, which a lagging game doesn't deliver. I'm not going to buy any nore PSX titles.

It's built into the Xperia Play.
........................................
Thanks for the observations Logseman.
I'm sure this won't be the case with every game, but nevertheless, it is troubling.
I think it points to the limitations of the Play's hardware, the officiall Sony Emu on PSP is flawless for everything I have tried. Can't help but feel they should have made the Play just a 'little' bit more powerful.
Hardware-wise, the Xperia Play has technology at least 5 years younger than the PSP one, not to mention the boost in processing speed and RAM memory. Plus, FPSE runs in the same hardware flawlessly. I would say it's a matter of implementation.
Very interesting, I'll try this with destruction derby tonight, I just assumed it was a mixture of things running in the background that was making it juddery!
Destruction Derby runs really, really fast for me in FPSE.
If you put smoothing on it works perfect and looks amazing.
It's the only game I've really been able to play with smoothing on though, which is a shame because it really cleans up the jaggies.
Where is smoothing?
I think he means screen filtering

Logseman i dont really have any of the issue that you have brought up, if i get a txt while im playing the game, i get 10-15 seconds of slowdown after, but it seems to sort itself out
Hi,
I have a BIG (personal) problem with the controls in Gameloft games. On a real console, if you hold the right analog stick in any direction, the camera keeps turning forever, which is the way it's supposed to be.
But in Gameloft games, if you keep your finger on the touchpad to keep turning nothing happens. Your character just does a ~90° turn and stys like that ... even if your finger is constantly on the same spot on the touchpad.
So in order to do a 360° turn you have to slide 4 times over the right touchpad. Where in gods name is the damn sense there? It's such a pita to play a game like this and it's not for one game, it's for EVERY SINGLE game they made for the xperia play !!
So what I'm asking here ... is there some kind of patch / hack to make it possible to have a permanant movement over the right touchpad?
Thanks,
iCEQB
I believe in can be changed in modern combat. Frankly I love the way they did it, I can turn faster by swiping faster, and aiming with it much faster and accurate. When I'm not lagging I get 55-9 records in rainbow 6. My best record was 110-10. Headshot rates are at around 48%.
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
I know exactly what you mean. They have made it so its like a controller in brothers in arms, but its far too sensitive, the swipe motion is a lot better the way gameloft has made them anyway.
The reason its good for some is that they have got used to it being that way. NOVA 2 was harder in the first half of the game, but started getting easier in the 2nd half as I had got used to the controls. Multiplayer was easy as others wouldn't be able to shoot straight at ya!
There's a thread on the gameloft forums about this and people complaining, its obvious they've just mapped the movement as it is now to the control pad rather than looking and testing it!
I think it's brilliant! With the right settings (sensitivity) and some time to get used to it and you're good to go! I'm loving it! Of curse, it's not the same as a real console but be real broh, it's a phone. Take it for what it is. I'm happy with it
I'm with the OP the gameloft controlls are crap, i didnt buy a phone with a pad to play games like im using a touch screen, the touch pad tests show, they can perfectly emulate anologue sticks, so why treat then like a touch screen, battlefields hammers the gameloft games, just because of the fact it has real controlls
I think we can categorise the 2 different look styles something like this -
1) Swipe to look - right stick acts like the touchscreen
2) Press to look - right stick acts like a regular control pad stick
Rainbow 6 has the option to play either way. I personally prefer number 2 and so i am with the OP also.
All games should have options to play BOTH ways to keep everyone happy imo.
Just tested Bad Company 2 ... thank god EA got the controls right. This game is SO much fun and a lot better than every single Gameloft game I tried.
But I still want to give gameloft games a chance. We need a list of games that support both control schemes.

yeah that game works perfect!
For four reasons, this surprises me:
• Gameloft usually sucks at quality assurance
• Modern Combat 2's controls have been getting worse with every "improvement"
• NOVA 2's controls work better... but only because the auto-aim is so high you'd swear every enemy is rigged with an electromagnet
• Previous versions of this very game followed suit.. except with ridiculous errors that'd make touching the right pad trigger things like shooting.
...but I bought it during the 99c sale... and umm... I dunno if they improved things drastically since the last version I played, but Brothers in Arms 2 controls are actually very responsive now! Almost to that sky-high level achieved by Dead Space!
If Gameloft can pull this off, why not go back to MC2 and NOVA2 to make their Xperia Play aiming work like this?
EDIT: And freaking Splinter Cell! Oh GOD! The rest are at least playable... Conviction doesn't even offer the ability to choose between swipe/analog or offer any form of acceleration tweaks!
What version? 3.3.9? Bought the game today and the aim controls are lame. It's way behind Dead Space's aim controls. I'd love to make headshots but the aim control is indeed responsive but are way too sensitive that it registers incorrect aim movement. Much like MC2.
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:37 AM ----------
I have latest version 3.3.9 by the way.
I just bought MC2 last night thinking the controls would be decent, I seriously can't aim for ****. I slide my finger down with the sensitivity at the lowest and my gun flies across the screen.
What a piece of garbage lol
So Dead Space the controls are great then? I had the game on my iPhone 4 and thought they were pretty decent on there, even better on the Xperia Play?

Yep, 3.3.9 is the BiA2 I have too. Sorry if I set any confusion, but Dead Space is still the top. I was just stating that BiA2's controls had me a bit more impressed than the other Gameloft shooters, especially considering how it's other versions were nearly unplayable.

That's because Gameloft issued a Modern Combat 2 update that made the game unplayable. My version of MC2 is 3.3.9... and as far as I know, that's the last version that still has 'good' controls.
Dead Space, however, controls FANTASTICALLY with the Xperia PLAY touchpads.
Now for some reason, it won't allow me to download Dead Space, says my device is not supported, wtf lol

I bought two new gameloft games i dunno last month I guess because I thought hey, 99 cents why not. To be honest I never play them. I mean, yes, technically they're games, but definitely not to the standard I even want to play for free. Some are ok but my point is most are insultingly bad.

Are you using the official AT&T version that just came out?
I remember that when PewPew 2 came out for Xperia PLAY, I gobbled it up and it controlled perfectly for me, but almost every other user was reporting it didn't work with their Xperia PLAY. I believe there's still some confusion going around since there's multiple versions of the Xperia PLAY (R800x, R800i, R800a, and now R800at). This could just be another episode of the same deal.
the problem i had with MC2 is that when i touch the right pad for UP, aim just goes down and vice versa..when trying to aim at enemies, the crosshair just flies up to the sky such that my player stares at the clouds and gets f***** by enemies... additionally, i can't aim the grenade properly that my player just drops it in front.. stupid
the problem with BiA2 is that, yeah the aim control was responsive but it's way to sensitive even with the Sensitivity set to 0. sometimes i even have the same problem i had with MC2.
i played Dead Space and indeed it was good, but i wasn't really impressed..the aim control was way too sensitive for my wide padded thumb (i have a big hand you know )..
of all the FPS i have played in my Xperia PLAY, those that really impressed me with their aiming controls were Rainbow Six Shadow Vanguard and NOVA2. I don't know with you guys but i'm having the perfect aiming controls with NOVA2. Stupid aliens just disappear in seconds when i'm playing it.

Yes, R800at.
It allowed me to download it a couple days ago, but I was at work and didn't have time, now I try to download it from Flexion and says my device is not supported all of the sudden.
and oh, the problem with BiA's aiming controls is that unlike Shadow Vanguard where you can let your right thumb stay on the right touchpad and just slide it when needed, in BiA you have to lift your thumb from it every now and then after making a move or the aim will just fly across the screen.. additionally, it seems the aiming control doesn't fully fully "respect" (if that's the right term) the idea of having a touchpad. it still requires you to touch/tap an imaginary four-directional areas in the right touchpad as if you are using a D-pad to aim. oh gameloft.. so lame...
I love first person/third person shooters and play a bunch on my pc. From TF2 to Mount and Musket I love these types of games.
I bought max payne mobile,Doom GLES, and Shadow Gun. After playing them all for about 3 hours I was really frustrated. The way the default controls of one finger on the left moves, and one on the right looks seemed really bad for shooters. I mean i have to stop moving or looking in order to shoot. It felt clumsy and my thumb sometimes slipped and didnt hit the "Shoot" button perfectly. Max Payne has a nice auto aim feature where the game does most of the precise aiming for you but still i was a bit frustrated. It seems the 3 games I used all had the same control system.
Do you like first person action based games on your phone and/or tablet? If so does the tablets bigger screen help? Do you change the way the controls work to better suit your needs? Do you play different games that control differently?
I want to like mobile games, but so far I am a bit unsure of the ones people play or that have good controls. Or maybe this genre isnt for the phone.
I am currently using a Motorola Droid Razr with 4.0.4
Thanks
