[Q] Trying to root my HTC EVO 4G - General Questions and Answers

I am trying to root my EVO. I once had it rooted and unrooted it...i think...with unrEVOked. I wanted to root the phone and install a custom rom again but I cant seem to get it to root.
I have tried unrEVOked(and followed all the easy steps to root on a forum....more then once), and once I got the initial screen were it sais to plug the phone in and make sure it has USBdebugging on, I do just that and nothing happens. so....
I tried to use Simple Root .1. Once again, found a forum on how to root with this program and followed the steps...more then once...and still no luck. With Simple Root I watched a video and in the video the prompt screen said that it was pushing a file to the phone and then it is suppose to go to the HBOOT screen....which does not happen on my phone, it skips that step and tells me to go to step 2, but I haven't completed step 1 yet....
I really dont know if me rooting the phone befor is causing this, but if anybody has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank
dizl.evo

If you're on the OTA gingerbread update then you won't be able to root.

I have not updated yet. It asked me to but i was about to root so didn't feel the need to update the HTC software.....

So you're not on 2.3? I don't have an evo, but the rroot process was pretty easy for me using unrevoked. USB debugging on, set to charge only. (Fastboot off, if that's an option in settings>power.)

when i first got the phone i rooted it with unrevoked and yea, it was easy....
But yes i actually am on 2.3.3.... Dont know if that is gingerbread or not...
here is my software info...
Android Version -2.3.3
Baseband Version -2.15.00.05.02
Kernel -2.6.35.10-g4e39384 [email protected] #1
Build number -4.22.651.2 CL60865 release-keys
Software number -4.22.651.2
Browser version -WebKit/533.1
PRI version -2.15_003
PRL Version -60680
Today, I randomly checked to see if there was a HTC update, and there was and it said that 2.3 (Gingerbread) 4.24.651.1 was available.....I dont know if any of that helps....

Can you get into recovery? What is the status of your hboot security?
Power off. Pull battery for 1 min. Hold volume down. Press power.
Report here if S on or S off please.
Try going into recovery.

HBOOT = s-off
as far as recovery, it shows a phone with a red triangle with an exclamation point.....

Good news! You are still rooted! (technicaly, S-off is not root, but just as good) Jump over to the EVO 4G forums and start reading! And asking questions here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=652
You can flash a recovery that will allow you to, in turn, flash whatever ROM you would like...
I suggest Amon-Ra recovery.
Good luck!

I'm kind of surprised that you were having problems with unrevoked. That is probably because you somehow upgraded to 2.3.3. Unrevoked used the initial exploit of rageagainstthecage, and this was blocked in 2.3.3. However, you obviously used unrevoked some time BEFORE you received 2.3.3. Either way, just reflash a recovery pc36img.zip version of Amon Ra found here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
then download a ROM, I suggest MikG or Synergy to the root of your SD card and flash via recovery.

THANKS lil_bono. i really appreciate your help...
Ok so i went to the HBOOT screen and clicked recovery and it failed....so is a flashrecovery different or am i going to still run into the same problem of it giving me that red triangle??

Youre welcome. Yes. Flashed recovery can be of different types and is what you need. It will have locally packaged commands instead of the stock adb connection only. Head over to the EVO forums and start searching and reading.

[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS

A lot of you have been asking for how to unroot the EVO, either because you're having problems and want to start over or you are returning your phone and need to have it unrooted. I've had nothing but trouble in the past trying to unroot using other methods, especially using the RUU on a PC. It always fails for me. Well here is the most simple guide to unroot!! Thanks to regaw for helping me with this, hosting, and the Unrevoked team for the S-ON tool!
HOW TO UNROOT THE EVO VIDEO WALKTHROUGH
How to Unroot the HTC EVO 4G
◄●REQUIRED DOWNLOADS●►
Unrevoked S-On Tool
PC36IMG
◄●SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS●►
If you're comfortable with everything Android related(flashing, recovery, etc.) then its just 2 simple steps:
If you used Unrevoked Forever at any time, flash unrevoked-forever-son.zip from recovery until hboot shows S-ON
Flash the PC36IMG.zip from hboot
◄●DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS●►
If you need a little more guidance, follow these instructions.
◄●If you have used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Make sure you have downloaded the files linked above. Do not extract them
Connect your phone to your computer via USB and change to "Disk Drive" by dragging down from the notification bar.
If you have NOT used Unrevoked Forever, skip to the instructions below. If you have, transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the root of your sdcard. Do NOT transfer the PC36IMG yet. It'll only cause a hassle and make this take longer.
Once complete, power off the phone
reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Depending on what recovery you're using, you need to flash a zip. Select the unrevoked-foreverson.zip that you just transferred and complete the flash.
When complete, power off the phone. Reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. If it says S-ON at the top, select RECOVERY and skip to step 9. If it says S-OFF, repeat steps 5-7 Until it does.
◄●If you have NEVER used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Power off the phone and reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Connect via USB. There is an option for this in both Amon RA and Clockwork.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sdcard.
EJECT THE PHONE FROM THE COMPUTER and then turn off USB in Recovery
Power off the phone and reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen.
It should check the PC36IMG.zip and then ask you YES/NO to apply the update. Press VOL UP for YES
Once complete, Press VOL UP to reboot.
You are now unrooted!
I do believe that says ◄●If you have used Unrevoked forever, start here●► twice....
yeah it should say if you have NEVER used unrevoked
what about Amon Ra 1.8 it says S-OFF at the top of the screen? is that just for bootloader?

S-Off means unrevoked forever has been run. You will need to do the first part, to restore S-On.
Good, simple guide. One additional step if you've rooted via SimpleRoot is that you have to try and get back to the 1.40 PRI, which can be tedious. That might be worth mentioning.

Not quite. The previous post was correct. Its just the bootloader. Toasts root has an eng spl and will show s off. This is just the bootloader and will be flashed over. Unrevoked sets s off lower and is not flashed over.

You could get a MicroSDHC adapter and transfer the files from your PC directly to your card. Sorry if that's not particularly helpful. :/

So, I used Toast's method for rooting and have the eng hboot... I'm looking to get back to complete stock so I can play with Unrevoked 3.2... Just to verify before I proceed, will this pc36img.zip take me back to the release version of hboot as well as stock 2.1?
(I have some testing I need to do on my evo before I root my boss', gf, and other buddy's phones... I don't want them to lose their 1.40 PRI... I'm still stuck at 1.34 unfortunately, hence the reason I just want to get back to stock hboot and do all the testing from my phone...)

I used toast's method as well as unrevoked forever. It would be nice to know if this would work.
Unlike you, I tested the new unrevoked method on a few friends evo's without a single prob.
I would like to start over, unroot, get 1.4 pri and be done with it till the next big thing comes along.

Hi,
Which android version will this PC36IMG.zip go back to? Stock 2.1 or Stock 2.2? Thanks.
Best part about this (and i dont know if it will work for everyone) is that once I did this I then did a hard reset (##786# method) and it updated the pri to 1.4
Good news! It worked!
I had used simple root and had the the eng hboot.
DId the 2 simple steps and now am back to stock 2.2 as if I never rooted my phone. Now that I know it works.... back to root I go.
P.s I have 1.4 pri now too.
Thanks!
I can not get this to work
hey can you help me out-I keep flashing unrevoked-forever-son.zip repeatedly and it doesnt work-It keeps saying s-off.I have clockworkmod recovery-I need to turn s-on because i have to take my evo back to a sprint repair shop.my 4g radio got hosed.I must have deleted the keys-I was able to correct my mac address however 4g will still not connect

I bet you have s-on but it says s-off. Confusing right? Well, if you used simple root and have the engineering bootloader it will still say s-off even after running unrevoked-forever-son. Run it a few times just to make sure then do part two.
Well, that's what I did and ONLY after part 2 did I get s-on.

Returned to stock and now problem

I rooted my phone and s-off, and I tried to return it to stock. When I used the factory Rom, it seems Alittle laggy and it keeps on saying I dont have mobile data when I have 1 out of 5 bars. My phone is also still s-off and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm running stock with s-off and no problems.
Well I did the temproot then turned s-on, then installed stock software. Also reset the phone when it came back up and now everything is running 100% better and gets awesome upload and download speeds for some reason. 3mb download and .79 upload. Thanks for trying guys but maybe this forum can help someone else in the future.

What steps are used to turn it back on.

Start here if your unrooted!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
So i went through the hole root process with the GOLDCARD to get it at least temp rooted. Once you get to the temp root shell in step (step)3.7(dot) that states
"Launch Terminal Emulator again in the phone, it Force Closes. Launch a another time, and you'll have a temp root shell."
Start here if your already rooted or temp root!!
Go to this link and put the steps in your command promt, also from you ace-hack-kit-v002 folder navigate to "tools/win" or "tools/mac" to get to the adb file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11486587&postcount=27
I used the 3rd one and when you do the process su will respond with su su not found, but keep going it's fine. Once you complete that your s-on and should say on top of the boot loader.
After that i used the stock ruu from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224
then when it came back up, i just returned it to factory settings through SD & phone storage.
I'm not sure if there are great instructions lol but if you have trouble, just let me know and i'll help you out or try to make more sence of it.

Please help my nexux s

I just unrooted my nexus s (9020t) and returned it to stock. It came up with 2.3.1 originally and wanted to update it back to 2.3.3. I found the update drivers and tried to update it, and came up with the status 7 errors. If found the solutions, and tried to go from 2.3.1 to 2.3.2, than install the radio thing to 2.3.3. Up to 2.3.2, it came up with the same error and tried the last resort of updating it to the full 2.3.3 os.
After the update, the nexus s turns on to the google splash screen and hangs up there. I can still access the recovery by holding the volume up and power. I also tried to do factory reset, and wipe data. Nothing seems to help.
Any help?
I'm no expert by any means but you may have to use odin to get it going again. You will probably need to make a jig or buy one to get into download mode.
I hope this helps you and your able to get up and running again.

I'm totally new into the android community and have no idea what Odin or jig is.
Since the fastboot is working, is there something that I'm missing with resetting orders or something else? I found that some one did a wipe dalvik (I think) with factory reset and cache, but I cannot find the dalvik.

You dont need a jig to get into download mode
Aslong as the bootloader is unlocked
Power down phone hold volume up/down then plug in USB from computer ....in download mode
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
im thinking if you could still access the bootloader then you can still flash clockworkmod. when you get that running, flash any rom u want in clockwork including stock 2.3.3. no odin necessary.
As long as you can still use fastboot there's no need to use Odin or JIG to flash the ROM.
I assume that:
you already have clockworkmod recovery installed and it's working properly.
your phone model is I9020T (SAMOLED)
If those are correct, I'd suggest you to download the 2.3.3 OTA package and flash it via clockworkmod (use the menu "Install zip from sdcard")
After flashing you'll have 2.3.3 on GRI40 running. And if you want to continue updating to 2.3.4, there's a thread dedicated to the topic.
PROBLEM SOLVED! Big appreciation to sonnysekhon who helped me over the phone at 11 in the night!
I was guided to just unlock fastboot, load the cwr and go into usb storage, add the cyanogen mod 7 and voila, problem solved. Now my only problem is, I've got 2.3.3 and want to update it to 2.3.4. Is there any easy way to do this?
Again, I want to thank you guys for the help!

I'm on cm7. It shows the cyanogen mod splash screen during bootup and has rom manager, file manager preinstalled.
I'm not really savvy when it comes to android mechanics because I just moved from itouch and iphones to androids couple days ago.
First of all. Congratulations on making the best decision! Iphone sucks. Lol.
Anyway, you can't update to 2.3.4 yet since its only available on stock right now. We're gonna have to wait until devs incorporate it into their custom roms. I believe there is a nightly version of cm7 that is already 2.3.4 but its not as stable as the 2.3.3 yet. hope that helps.

{GUIDE} Unroot and back to STOCK via HBOOT

Here is what I did to return to stock unrooted:
1) Download latest RUU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Speedy
1.5) Install latest HTC Drivers on computer from here http://www.htc.com/www/SupportViewNe...73&news_id=907
2)Boot into Bootloader: Vol down plus power
3)click on fastboot
4)connect USB to computer and phone
5)when screen says fastboot usb run RUU on your computer
5.5) Dont worry about errors about usb being connected just exit RUU and try again. It took me a few times before it finally took.
6)When done you will be stock and unrooted.
If this helps you please don't forget the thanks button.
Thanks skibit for the PM. OP was updated.
My story
Here is why I posted this.
My wife wanted her phone back to stock. So I searched around for about an hour looking at all the different ways to unroot. I finally chose the way I wanted to do it using the PG06IMG. After running it the phone was S-ON and Root Checker was still saying phone was rooted with busybox and the custom ROM was still installed. I was still able to get into recovery but wasn't able to get s-off again. So I tried to install the the lasted stock ROM via CWM but it caused the phone to get stuck at the splash screen (prolly because of S-ON). After about 5 hours of searching (I did find posts to do what I ended up doing but they weren't detailed and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working) and piecing things together I finally found a solution that worked. Hope this helps you.

My phone was done by hardware cycle clip a couple of months ago, first experience with Ginberbreak was confusing but it does work. First turn on debug mode, second turn off fast boot in power menu cos you'll need to fully reboot after the gingerbreak error.....
So run gingerbreak and after the SD card can be removed safely indicating the sdcard is now unmounted, then wait a couple of minutes and give the screen a few swipe another message error that it didn't work telling you to check for superuser in the app drawer. Do check if superuser is installed then you're rooted but no use without SD card access, now just reboot fully and check that sdcard is mounted then go to market download Rom manager and flash clockworkmod.
If no further luck then refer to loveboatcaptain's unsecured boot image might be easier stickied thread.
