[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS - EVO 4G Android Development

A lot of you have been asking for how to unroot the EVO, either because you're having problems and want to start over or you are returning your phone and need to have it unrooted. I've had nothing but trouble in the past trying to unroot using other methods, especially using the RUU on a PC. It always fails for me. Well here is the most simple guide to unroot!! Thanks to regaw for helping me with this, hosting, and the Unrevoked team for the S-ON tool!
HOW TO UNROOT THE EVO VIDEO WALKTHROUGH
How to Unroot the HTC EVO 4G
◄●REQUIRED DOWNLOADS●►
Unrevoked S-On Tool
PC36IMG
◄●SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS●►
If you're comfortable with everything Android related(flashing, recovery, etc.) then its just 2 simple steps:
If you used Unrevoked Forever at any time, flash unrevoked-forever-son.zip from recovery until hboot shows S-ON
Flash the PC36IMG.zip from hboot
◄●DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS●►
If you need a little more guidance, follow these instructions.
◄●If you have used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Make sure you have downloaded the files linked above. Do not extract them
Connect your phone to your computer via USB and change to "Disk Drive" by dragging down from the notification bar.
If you have NOT used Unrevoked Forever, skip to the instructions below. If you have, transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the root of your sdcard. Do NOT transfer the PC36IMG yet. It'll only cause a hassle and make this take longer.
Once complete, power off the phone
reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Depending on what recovery you're using, you need to flash a zip. Select the unrevoked-foreverson.zip that you just transferred and complete the flash.
When complete, power off the phone. Reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. If it says S-ON at the top, select RECOVERY and skip to step 9. If it says S-OFF, repeat steps 5-7 Until it does.
◄●If you have NEVER used Unrevoked forever, start here●►
Power off the phone and reboot into the recovery by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen. Then select RECOVERY.
Connect via USB. There is an option for this in both Amon RA and Clockwork.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sdcard.
EJECT THE PHONE FROM THE COMPUTER and then turn off USB in Recovery
Power off the phone and reboot into the bootloader by holding VOL DOWN + POWER until it boots to the white screen.
It should check the PC36IMG.zip and then ask you YES/NO to apply the update. Press VOL UP for YES
Once complete, Press VOL UP to reboot.
You are now unrooted!

I do believe that says ◄●If you have used Unrevoked forever, start here●► twice....

yeah it should say if you have NEVER used unrevoked
what about Amon Ra 1.8 it says S-OFF at the top of the screen? is that just for bootloader?

S-Off means unrevoked forever has been run. You will need to do the first part, to restore S-On.

Good, simple guide. One additional step if you've rooted via SimpleRoot is that you have to try and get back to the 1.40 PRI, which can be tedious. That might be worth mentioning.

Not quite. The previous post was correct. Its just the bootloader. Toasts root has an eng spl and will show s off. This is just the bootloader and will be flashed over. Unrevoked sets s off lower and is not flashed over.

try hitting hboot again and see

My micro-usb is hosed - it's why I need to unroot so as to return it.
Is there an adb method of unrooting?

You could get a MicroSDHC adapter and transfer the files from your PC directly to your card. Sorry if that's not particularly helpful. :/

So, I used Toast's method for rooting and have the eng hboot... I'm looking to get back to complete stock so I can play with Unrevoked 3.2... Just to verify before I proceed, will this pc36img.zip take me back to the release version of hboot as well as stock 2.1?
(I have some testing I need to do on my evo before I root my boss', gf, and other buddy's phones... I don't want them to lose their 1.40 PRI... I'm still stuck at 1.34 unfortunately, hence the reason I just want to get back to stock hboot and do all the testing from my phone...)

I used toast's method as well as unrevoked forever. It would be nice to know if this would work.
Unlike you, I tested the new unrevoked method on a few friends evo's without a single prob.
I would like to start over, unroot, get 1.4 pri and be done with it till the next big thing comes along.

Hi,
Which android version will this PC36IMG.zip go back to? Stock 2.1 or Stock 2.2? Thanks.

Best part about this (and i dont know if it will work for everyone) is that once I did this I then did a hard reset (##786# method) and it updated the pri to 1.4

Good news! It worked!
I had used simple root and had the the eng hboot.
DId the 2 simple steps and now am back to stock 2.2 as if I never rooted my phone. Now that I know it works.... back to root I go.
P.s I have 1.4 pri now too.
Thanks!

I can not get this to work
hey can you help me out-I keep flashing unrevoked-forever-son.zip repeatedly and it doesnt work-It keeps saying s-off.I have clockworkmod recovery-I need to turn s-on because i have to take my evo back to a sprint repair shop.my 4g radio got hosed.I must have deleted the keys-I was able to correct my mac address however 4g will still not connect

I bet you have s-on but it says s-off. Confusing right? Well, if you used simple root and have the engineering bootloader it will still say s-off even after running unrevoked-forever-son. Run it a few times just to make sure then do part two.
Well, that's what I did and ONLY after part 2 did I get s-on.

[S-OFF] Unrevoked Forever for radio 2.15.00.11.19

If you're not an expert user, stop reading now. The unrevoked
release that supports the new OTA will be coming soon.
STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP
Hi folks.
I have a build of Forever for radio 2.15.00.11.19; it worked on my phone. So, for the adventurous amongst you who don't want to wait for the new unrevoked release (coming soon, I swear; we now all finally have a moment to breathe, so we're getting moving on this one), but are somehow stuck on the new radio, I have a new build for you -- get it at the usual place.
Have fun!

Quick question Joshua, Quite a while ago I Rooted my EVO with UnRevoked 3.21 and have S-Off and all is well. Back at that time should I have also flashed UnRevoked Forever, or does 3.21 also cover that?
Thanks.

Same question here, I only ran 3.21 and it put me in S-OFF. I've even flashed a couple of RUU's in the past and re-rooted, and the phone never went back to S-ON.
I had eng hboot with soff, but applied the new soff successfully to the radio after updating to the 2.15.00.11.19 radio.
This works flawlessly
Just wanted to let everyone know how I achieved full root with the newest OTA.
1) download newest S-OFF Patch that works with new radio while still rooted on older SW version. Install S-OFF.zip through recovery.
2) Use 3.29 ruu to restore phone back to stock, s-off will still be on. Download OTA update directly to phone after you finish initial setup.
3) Install downloaded OTA immediately. Let it do its thing. Once you reboot, place clockwork recovery (Amon-RA probably works too but I haven't tried it yet) on the root of your sdcard and make sure it is named pc36img.zip.
4) power off phone, hold volume down and power... phone will turn on and ask if you want to apply update , press volume up for yes.
5) you now have root and nand unlock with all the newest radio versions and a custom recovery to flash zips as you wish. I installed a stock de-odexed version of the newest OTA already as I wait for devs to release custom ROMS based on 3.70...
Have fun!!
Everything I used was downloaded right from here.

THIS WAS DONE ON AN 003 HARDWARE PHONE. I CAN NOT GUARANTEE THIS WILL WORK ON 004!!!
Thanks. The Unrevoked site now shows support for 11.19.

If the phone says S-OFF, and it DOESN'T say "ENG" at the top, then you don't need to run Forever; you're already S-OFF. (It was included in all unrevoked releases since, I think, 3.2.)
Josh I have original eng boot with s-off and I flashed unrevoked forever just in case I decided to upgrade the hboot later . My hboot still shows eng s-off and flash said it was successful. Should I see still see eng in my hboot?

If you flashed Forever, it will still say ENG; there isn't an easy way to tell if it's a hard-S-OFF or soft-S-OFF if you have the ENG loader. But yes, if you flashed Forever, you are now hard-S-OFF, and it's OK if it still says ENG -- you just have to remember that you did flash Forever!
Cool, yeah it put a log on my SD card that said successful. Figured I would forever flash as some people lost s-off updating hboot.

Okay, so u lashed zip and got s-off... Place pc36img.zip onto root of sdcard and then powered off the phone... The you hold down power and volume down button at same time... Hboot should pop up and search for pc36img.zip automatically... It should find it and then ask if you want to proceed to update... Then you press volume up key and it will update.... Boot phone regularly, attach to computer.... Remove pc36img.zip from root of sd card... Shut phone down.... Hold down power and volume down at same time. Hboot will pop up again and look for pc36img.zip / since u removed it it will find nothing press volume down until recovery... when recovery is highlighted press power button.. you will be in recovery.... Just make sure you get the pc36img.zip file from unrevoked site... I downloaded the one for clockwork as I have never had a problem with it.

Got a question. I rooted using the original method from reginaw when 2.2 first got rooted using the long adb method. I also flashed unrevoked forever and the eng.76 boot loader. Since I just recently flashed the new radio but I'm still showing s-off, do I need to reflash unrevoked forever? Thanks for any help u can give.

Is there any benefit of the newest Hboot? I originally rooted my phone back in Sept with unrevoked 3.21. It had hboot .92 i believe, but then i flashed the eng .76 bootloader. Everything has been great. But recently I flashed caulkulin's all in one PRI, PRL, WIMAX, and RADIO. My phone has been booting, but I noticed it stays on the flash screen for a good amount of time, sometimes it will even hang up on the flash screen and I have to do a battery pull. Would it benefit me to flash the latest s-off, update OTA to 3.70 and follow the rest of the directions? Thanks for any help you can spare.

[TOOL][Updated 21-AUG-2011]Inspire Factory Reset/S-ON tool. GB and FR versions.

I'm working on a single-package solution for S-ON full factory reset. It's a PD98IMG type package that, in addition to the program itself, contains the complete factory stock 1.80.502.3 RUU. It runs in three phases:
Overview:
Installs itself as a PD98IMG type package (it contains a stripped down CM6 OS with a single app--the app that does the restoration, the correct radio/kernel combo for gfree exploit, and a data partition containing the RUU); Simply copy the file to the SD card (with an adapter if you can't do it through the phone), rename it to exactly "PD98IMG.zip", then boot into HBOOT (disconnect USB if connected, pull and put back battery, then hold VOL-DOWN and momentarily press POWER).
Boots and runs the restoration program as the only app in the OS, prompting the user at each step to make sure all goes well. The last step copies the RUU from the data partition to the SD card, thereby replacing the PD98IMG.zip that installed everything with the RUU, then reboots to HBOOT for the final phase.
The final phase is loading and running the RUU on the newly restored (S-ON) device to return it to full factory status. The RUU copied in phase 2 is a genuine HTC stock 1.80.502.3 restoration RUU. Allow it to unzip and self-check, then press VOL-UP to write it to the device.
Once completed successfully, you should be in the same condition as an out-of-box new phone.
If you do have to send your phone back for warranty or insurance purposes, it should be a lot easier than the currently available methods.
Important! The newest batch of Inspires shipped from HTC (probably anything bought new after Aug. 2011) have hardware that is incompatible with the hboot in the Froyo update as listed here. If your Inspire is a later model Inspire, do not run the Froyo version on it. Use the Gingerbread version only!
Instructions:
Do a nandroid and/or Titanium backup! It never hurts!
While still in ClockWorkMod recovery, do a "Factory Reset/Wipe Data". This is necessary if you've got an ext4 cache or CM7 dalvik-cache on /cache. If not it will cause boot hang after installation. EXT4 cache will not work with this tool. If your recovery has ext4, be sure you format the cache to EXT3.
Download from the URL below, copy to the SD card and rename to "PD98IMG.zip"
Reboot to HBOOT: Shutdown completely (disconnect USB if connected and pull battery if necessary) then while holding down the VOL-DOWN key, press the POWER key for about half a second. The phone should boot into HBOOT, check the PD98IMG.zip for consistency, then prompt you to install. Select VOL-UP to install.
Once installed, HBOOT will prompt you to reboot by pressing the POWER button. Do this.
The operating system in this tool is a stripped down CM6 install with only the minimum features necessary to run an apk. The apk for the tool will run after the HTC splash screen, then prompt you through the process. Depending on the speed of your SD card, the last step, copying the RUU to the SD card, may take several minutes.
Once successfully completed, the phone will automatically reboot to HBOOT and begin the process of installing the RUU. The only thing you have to do at this point is acknowledge the prompt to install by pressing VOL-UP. (Note: the RUU install may skip a couple of images during the install but this is normal.)
Once the RUU is installed, press POWER to reboot and your phone should be in 100% factory out-of-box condition.
Changelog:
13-SEP-2011 -- Added emphasis to step 2 to drive home the fact that this will not work if you have an EXT4 cache partition.
21-AUG-2011 -- 1.07: Removed "beta" designation. Added both Gingerbread (2.3.3) and Froyo (2.2.2) versions since 2.3.3 is now officially released for Inspire. Cleaned up the launcher a bit, fixed some typos and scrolling issues.
11-AUG-2011 -- 1.06b: Reverted to a PD98IMG that does NOT erase the cache. This was causing boot hangs. There is now a new step 2 in the instructions. Be sure to clear your data/cache.
10-AUG-2011 -- 1.05b: Fixed black screen for some Inspires with different mfg. LCD panels. Added cache wipe to main image as a dirty cache partition could cause bootloops in some situations. Disabled screen timeout so screen doesn't blank out while copying RUU.

I'm actually wanting to flash my phone back to an "out of the box" state, I'm downloading the .zip now, I'll post the results in a few. If this works, you will have made me a happy man!
I'm going to get the Motorola Atrix (I hope it's actually better...)

if you have s-on, you probably never rooted in the first place so what are you looking to "restore"?

works
It worked as it should. S-on and back to stock, very easily. great work.
Nice job, GenePoole. This was well thought out and executed.
is there a specific place to put the PD98IMG or is anywhere fine?
This didn't work for me. I wanted to try out the new Gingerbread release from AT&T and when I run through this process, I'm stuck at a black screen after step 4. I tried twice just to make sure I didn't screw something up. Black screen, both times.
thanks
so i haven't tried this method yet, im wondering if i return my inspire to get a new replacement inspire, will it be as easy to root my new inspire as it was a couple months ago, the reason i ask is because anyone with a rooted evo 4g better take good care of it because if they send it in to get a new one they will be stuck with stock, the new evo 4g is unrootable lol, sucks for them, any ways i just dont want a stock inspire that cant be rooted, thanks for this tool mate, i will surely use it once i know i can root my replacement inspire

The RUU has the default splash screen (white with green "HTC") so I would assume that if you have a custom screen, it will overwrite it, but I have no first hand information. I'll try installing a custom splash on mine and see what happens.

[Q] Can't ROOT anymore - Permission Error

I have an Inspire 4G which I've rooted before using the ace-hack v11a method. I subsequently unrooted the device and went back to stock. I now have a desire to root again. I received my goldcard image, but when I run option 2, I receive an error with dev/block/mmcblk1 protected Can't write to MBR, etc., etc.
I can get into the white option bootloader screen on rebooting the unit and performed a factory reset. I've also formatted my SD Card FAT-32. I've tried two different USB cables and I know I can root this device because I've rooted it in the past. I just can't get past the write permission errors to perform option #2 or #3 on the ace-hack file. Virus protections were off. It definitely can perform ADB functions because it did reboot the device on its own.
Any other suggestions?

Are you still s-off? If so...download this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965634), rename it PD98IMG.zip, boot to bootloader and let it install. This is angelchen's stock/rooted ROM. Once it installs, install ROM Manager and flash CWM Recovery. Now you can download/flash the ROM of your choice
No, I don't think I'm S-OFF. When I unrooted it pretty much took me back to stock as if the phone had never been rooted. I may have misspoke when I said I boot into bootloader. I basically boot into a white screen with four options such as fastboot, recovery, factory reset and simlock. It states eMMC-boot at the top. Recovery does nothing. It comes up with a sync like icon, but then I get the phone with the red icon thing and it reboots.

This is stock Hboot, but you could still be s-off after unrooting. At the top does it say "ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF" or "ACE PVT SHIP S-ON"?
If you're S-On, try an alternative root method. CyanogenMod has a method (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Ace) so does user JSLEnterprises (http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3867.0)
It sounds like you're using an older version of attn1's hack kit. The newest working version is, I'm sorry, was, only 1 step. Older versions may no longer work with newer firmware
It's definitely S-ON. Thanks for the reply. I'll try one of those alternative methods tonight. Thanks for the links though.

No problem and good luck
Thanks for your help yesterday. I ended up using the Advanced ACE Hack Kit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352) and it rooted perfectly. For those who receive an error similar to mine, don't believe those who say it's your SD Card or drivers, etc. It's probably that you're using an old version of the rooting software then your phone can support.

Plea for help..

I know I was down this road before.
I upgraded my 4G to ICS one of the first ones...
Then using One-X toolKit successfully installed CWM and root the thingy...
Silly me.. Started Fooking with perfectly fine phone..... and screwed it up to the point that I lost Sense, contacts, music... Otherwise it booted and worked...
Now started at point 0 again. D/loaded GB RUU, flashed it with no probs...
Looked for T-mo ICS update, found it and installed. NOW....... Dummy me, can't install CWM.... Can't root. All my effort end up at white HTC screen with no response at all, until I pull the battery out and then restart it. Restarts fine, everything works, but with no root cannot use Titanium and do have some apps to install.
Please, if someone had the same situation would you give me some pointers....
Getting to the point to go insane..... Thanks!!
Did you s-off or are you s-off? To check take the battery out of your phone put it back in and hold down the power plus the volume down rocker. If it says S-off then just follow this guide if not you see what hboot you are on, assuming its 1.2x then follow this guide if its 1.18 then just use this
Thanks for the reply.
After 10 hour fighting with that thing, finally got it done...
Still have no idea of what happened but, what I've done last, I didn't let it to reboot... Clicked BOOT TO RECOVERY right away.. It might of done the trick and allow me toboot to CWM and install the Superuser..... Now everything is fine..
Thanks, all!!!!

TC Inspire 4g Unbricking Guide
In this guide I will be showing you how to unbrick the HTC Inspire 4g for AT&T.
Requirements:
1. Your bricked phone (of-course)
2. HTC-Sync
3. USB Cable
4. HTC Inspire 4g Gingerbread RUU
5. S-ON
Steps:
1. Download HTC-Sync from: http://dl3.htc.com/application/HTCSyncv3.0.5579.exe
2. Download HTC Inspire Gingerbread RUU from: http://dl4.htc.com/RUU_Ace_Gingerbr...60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_200368_signed.exe
3. Install HTC-Sync
4. Boot into Bootloader mode and plug your phone into your pc
5. Run the RUU executable
6. It will take a moment to start, but when it does, go through the steps and it should start to flash the firmware
7. (Optional) Sometimes the process will freeze. It is ok though, open task manager, close the process, unplug your phone, pull the battery, and start over the process until you get it to work. (It worked first time for me.)
Then your phone should restart after it finishes flashing. Then your phone will be unbricked!
Thank you for looking and I hope this helps you in some way!

You just need to flash a ROM. Doesnt matter how you do it, just do it.

flashing the rom is the problem. it wouldnt let me into the recovery. the steps above actually help. now i just need to root the thing
I notice the bootlaoder step is vague. It needs to be in fastboot. So select fastboot from hboot so that you see fastboot USB on screen then run ruu.

Your sdcard is corrupted and won't work as a goldcard. Get a NEW one or one that has not been improper dismounted. By the way, if you phone were bricked then you would have nothing to do. You just got stuck.
Get the new sdcard and then flash the PD98IMG.zip file that the Hack Kit downloaded (it is in the PD98IMG folder and it is usually called PD98IMG-GBx.zip, being x a number. Of course make sure that you rename it PD98IMG.zip once in the sdcard).
Then boot in hboot and wait to be prompted to update. After that, you will be downgraded, just re run the hack kit and you will be ready to go. SALUD!

I suspect that I have issues with my sd card. Can these issues with corruption be corrected?

Not with the same card, as far as I know. You need to get a new one. The card tends to get corrupted when it's improperly unmounted.
Bricked?
Recently tried to return to stock RUU via ace advanced hack kit. During the return to stock there was an error and my phone attempted to reboot. I currently can't get past the htc boot up screen. It powers on, shows htc screen, then fades to black. Attempted to hold power and vol button with no luck. Anyone have any suggestions how to bypass this? Can't get my pc to recognize my device so not really sure if I can push a new rom to it or not.
Thanks,
Ryan

What do you mean by "no luck?" What happens exactly when you hold power and volume-down?

What was the AAHK error? Which RUU? Was AAHK up to date? Were you S-OFF? ADB doesn't detect your device?

I have a hunch that you may have messed your bootloader. Wait for tomorrow and hope glevitan shows up to verify/denounce my hunch and help you out.
Didn't he update the guide to reflect how to fix that issue? Not sure, can't remember.... too sleepy to check. :screwy:

Have you tried pulling the battery out for a few seconds then hold volume down and press power. Don't let go of volume down until you see hboot screen.

You can flash this PD98IMG. It will take a long time to react to stuff though so you will have to be patient. It's the inspire gingerbread hboot.
PD98IMG
After that use this PD98IMG to install the gingerbread Rom. You will still be s off but on 2.47.502.7.

Well, you failed to read and follow the manual and besides you even flashed a froyo Ruu when you are told not to so?
conclusion: messed bootloader. You will have to fix it yourself. I decided not to help lazy people anymore. What first happened to you was Normal and detailed in the effen manual. If you had read it you would be enjoying your phone now.
