MIUI - Video Quits after 1 second. - Samsung Mesmerize

Okay, I have tried 2 different .avi videos and both quit playback after 1 second. There is never any video and you can hear the first second of audio. After finding another video player and playing it using software decoding, it worked but wasnt in snyc with audio.

Thats odd. I can play multiple file types and codecs no problem. Make sure you're on 1.7.15 and maybe try some alternate kernels, glitch from the fascinate forums works amazingly for me.
If you still have issues, try...
1. Battery pull, this fixes some random radio issues and other things. Can't hurt to try.
2. Reflash rom and whatever kernel you use if you use one.
3. Data wipe/factory reset in recovery. You can make backups with titanium and miui to get everything back.
If you still have issues try using cm7, omfgb, some other rom and if it doesn't work there then it's your phone.

I dont think i use a kernel? Care to explain?

A kernel is sorta like the base of the rom in layman's terms. The rom is what you see and interact with and the kernel is like the underlying drivers that make things tick... you are running the standard kernel that comes with the rom. You can check the Fascinate development forum for kernels, I recommend Glitch for the best speed and awesomeness. It'll just give you extra features, speed, and possibly fix your problems.

[Q] Gingerbread video playback issues

Good morning XDA,
I've followed XDA for a few months now, reading as much as I can about all of the neat Android development going on here. I haven't had much to say that others haven't said before, but I haven't seen much mention regarding an issue I've noticed on a few of the new Gingerbread ROMs.
Video playback: I can't open any video files. Youtube and flash are ok, but an "unsupported" errorpops up with .avi, .mkv,.you name it. GR-11 and Subpression both do this. I think it may be something to do with the build.prop, but I'm not close to any of the developers here. Any solutions or others that have noticed this?
Just wanted to raise it on the rare chance it hasn't been noticed. ROMs are run on an i896.
Thanks for the hard work everyone!
It might be your rom or not a perfect flash because I'm on perception 2 beta 2 and im having no problem
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
No issues on Continuum either.
I would try reflashing it and see if that helps cause stuff can screw up in a flash
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Have you used SD Maid? It did give me some trouble after using it so I suggest not to.
If not, clear cache/dalvik and reflash your current ROM (or another if you want).
If that doesn't work.. Backup everything (and transfer your files to your computer), Factory reset through cwm (it will not clear your sd) and reflash your ROM.
Could be a Touchjizz 4 thing.. I just flashed GR-11 and also have the same problem. I don't experience any problems with the stock video player on stock JVB.
I tested it and it seems to work on Stock GB with the stock video player. No such luck with Continuum v5.1, Mosaic I, Subpression, or GR-11 so far. The exact error is: "Sorry, this video cannot be played". The video has no length, so it's just not reading it correctly.
I installed ADW and tested it and it doesn't work either, so it seems its not a TouchWiz 4 thing. Stagefright tweak doesn't alter anything either.
And no, I have not used SD Maid.
I will try again and reflash to stock for a third time. Maybe that will help.
Getting bored of flashing the same thing over and over D:
I haven't had any problem with video playback on perception 2
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Perception II Beta 2 works with video. Not sure why it's different, but it is.
Before I installed the ROM I checked to see if it was the kernel (Talon 0.1.5) causing the issues, but it was fine.
Not sure why.
I was on GR11 couple days ago and it played .mkv no problem. Now on Mosaic and still plays fine.As for avi, I dont think stock player support it,could be wrong.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
mkvs are working for me on subpression 3. but many things were broken for me on g-r11
it may be something to do with enabling stage fright in build.prop. look "media.stagefright.enable-player" and try changing it to false if nothing else works.
Had the same problem with GR 11. I just downloaded a different video player in the market; mobo.
GR 12 plays avi files fine. I don't have a mkv file with me to test. It was part of the changelog for 12 that media playback bug was fixed.
Sent from my Captivate running GR-12
This is caused by stagefright.
Disabling it will give you all video format support but get 1500 in CPU part of Quadrant.
Enabling it will disable mkv and avi playback, but get 5000ish in CPU part of Quadrant benchmark.

[Q] Enable 1080p playback on Gingerbread ROMs?

I just picked up my Infuse today, and it came preloaded with a 1080p trailer that looked pretty stunning on the phone. A few hours later, I'm running Darky 10.2.2 Final and everything is setup and working perfectly when I realize that the I9000 doesn't support >720p playback—and surely enough, I can no longer play 1080p videos on my Infuse. But then I flashed Infused, and I'm still unable to play videos >720p.
Is there any known way of enabling 1080p playback on Gingerbread? I did searching, but I couldn't find any topics about 1080p playback. Is this a bug, or is it a feature limited to AT&T ROM's for some reason?
Edit: Actually, I did some more testing and noticed that video support is abysmal compared to my Captivate. Some of my 720p videos (that play fine on my Captivate) are just a black screen and no sound, while others play fine. Also, playing videos using the software decoder of players like MX Video Player and MoboPlayer works just fine on my Captivate, but the same videos played in software on my Infuse result in a garbled, robotic sound and laggy video. These are pretty annoying problems, considering that my Captivate used to be my PMP and I expected the Infuse to be even better.

The reason you are having these problems is that none of the Gingerbread
custom roms here are the official AT&T release.
Instead the Gingerbread roms here were dumped from the Canadian Rogers
Infuse phones.
If you really are not satisfied with the current Rogers Gingerbread custom roms
then there is only one way to get the video playback to work according to
the Samsung Infuse specifications.
You will need to flash a Samung Infuse Froyo custom rom or go back to the
original stock Froyo rom which your phone came with.
Here are two links for you, one is for GTG's Infused v1.60 Froyo custom rom
which can be found here with complete step by step instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105413
This other link is for GTG's Infuse Froyo stock rom with step by step instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
Either one of these two roms will play back videos according to the
Samsung Infuse specifications.
I would suggest to go with the Infused v1.60 custom rom since its
a lot faster and smoother plus it has many extra features and options.
Good luck!
Are you playing the same 1080p trailer? It may be possible to pull libs from ki3 or ki4 into infused but it seems kinda useless since the infuse screen is only 480x800 and there is no NHL support in any non att rom. You may want to get Odin or heimdall and run the ki3 leak (better modem) or ki4 leak with the ki3 modem. Just flash it with the hellraiser kernel first ( easiest in heimdall 1.1 since you extract the package so you don't need to write into the package and worry about permissions. Issues) then flash the proper kernel after the phone has booted once. This will give you a rooted att 2.3.5 rom with HDMI but no recovery get sgs kernel flasher to flash back to the hellraiser kernel if you need recovery for any reason (this kernel breaks audio over usb and HDMI ). I ran my phone like this a coupe weeks and was pretty happy with it except for the rainbow garbage on boot.

Yea, it's the exact same set of videos. And I know the screen is only 800x480, but I have a large library of HD videos including 1080p and I don't like to spend hours converting files to reduce quality and take up additional space I don't really care about MHL/HDMI, I have laptops and HTPC's for that.
I might give KI3/4 a try, since I already flashed back to stock only to run into an unfixable (without factory reset) market bug. Do you know if they have the same format support as Froyo, or if the kernel has any effect on media playback?
Edit: Nvm. I just realized custom kernels won't boot the ROM and a Voodoo sound+OC kernel is a must for me.

Use entropy or hellraiser kernel. Yes they and others boot the rom. Older kernels had no wifi but Linux bozo and entropy pulled in initramfs mods from the ki4 kernel fixing that and improving data speeds. Just remember if you go to the stock kernel ( doesn't sound like you will) you would need to disable voodoo.
I posted a deodexed ki3 but it had issues. The email app wouldn't install and it was kinda slow. It ran much better odexed.

Hmm, I might give it a try. I'm on Infused 1.6 for now, but I've noticed that a lot of video playback issues still persists and seem to only affect the Infuse, regardless of the ROM it's running. Other I9000-based phones don't have these issues, so I'm pretty disappointed since there doesn't seem to be any fix available.

Having a problem with Youtube Vids.

I'm currently running airfulip's AOSP Style X and previously was running dsexton's ICINB 2.3.7 v2. While running either ROM, I was able browse the web but YouTube videos would not always play. I would only be able to play YouTube videos successfully 2 out of 10 attempts. Now just to be sure, I tried them on my windows Nokia 710 and the same videos had no problem playing each and every time. I did this with the phones side to side. Both phones are on the same network, Wind Mobile. I tried fixing permissions, just because that's something everyone recommends when having weird issues like this, but it did not good. I even tried factory reset and re-installing the ROM and then another factory reset for good measure and it still has problems with playing YouTube. It's really weird it will play on the rare occasion, but for the most part, it's a no go. The screen just sits there, with the loading arrow circling trying to load the video but to no success. BTW, when I am on wifi, I do not have this problem. Any suggestions?
Sounds like a data speed problem. Both those ROMs as far as I know have no video issues. Try running speedtest and see. If it is a data problem try flashing another modem. FB's got CWM flashables in the dev section.
hello,
I'm running airfluips 2.3.7 SOAP style X ROM and you tube is working fine
its known not to play videos. and search criteria wont show everything you see as like on a PC because of the different video formats people use that cell phones cannot handle. Although i have heard if you have adobe flash player installed videos will load better in the browser
Best of luck! =)
Thanks for the suggestions. Tried a few different modems, did no good. Ran a speed test with mobilespeedtest.net on both the nokia 710 and GS4G. The nokia consistently was a bit slower, but it had no problem loading up and playing YouTube vids. I really don't get it. My GS4G will play YouTube but it just plays it on and off. Majority of the time it just sits there trying to load the video. Again, I don't have this problem with wifi. So it seems as if it get's real sticky when running off my 3G service, because wifi has no issues loading and playing YouTube.
Did you by any chance install the the beats audio mod? It happened to me after doing so. Reverted, everything's fine now.

No beats audio mod. The fact that I don't have any issues on wifi and the fact that I don't have any issues on the same network with my nokia 710 loading and playing the same videos has to mean there is an issue with the youtube app hooking up to my 3g data service. I'm gonna give valhalla final a try again. I don't remember every having this issue with valhalla final. So if it happens running valhalla final then I think im done troubleshooting. lol.
So it seems Vlahalla Final has no problems with youtube on my phone. It's very odd. I'm gonna just stick with this until I go full time to windows phone when Apollo is out in the fall.
I simply love Valhalla Final.
On my opinion, best ROM this phone has, combined with Team Acid kernel and Adrenaline Shot it doesn't get any better than this.

I have the same problem and I'm running dsexton's icbinb rom. I've been told to use gremlin remover.. but when you don't have access to a PC you just can't. I have no other problem with this Rom the YouTube issue is all! I'm gonna flash the new version of the Rom and see if it fixes it. Also, is it OK to flash over the old version with the aroma installer? Or do I have to do a wipe?

Sorry for the dumb question, but, did you try to reboot ?
I had a problem with YouTube videos 2 days ago and a reboot fixed it.
Apparently some flash or RAM issue.

[Q] ICS & Flash Video

Okay, maybe someone will know the answer to this.
Every single ICS rom I've tried... and I'm pretty sure that's all of them... has had abysmal performance playing flash video through a browser. I'm talking from
jt's original ICS... to
Entropy's ICS...to
uniporn
jblparisi's
remixICS
etc. etc.
Now, just to be clear... all of those ROMs that I mentioned I thoroughly enjoy... they had/have a lot of work put into them, and I thank the devs.
But this puzzles me... I had perfect flash video playback on a number of GB roms... notably AEON... now we move to ICS... and it's incapable of doing the same thing?
Also, whatever the problem is, it is some kind of common thread that runs through every ICS release for the infuse. I've tested. There is no example of this problem not being present.
Anyone have information, or a solution, or have noticed this problem themselves?
Thanks
I do agree with your statement.
I think this is due to the Wi-Fi and data speeds. Unlike GB ROMs, build.prop has not yet been extensively looked at in ICS ROMs. Network speed drops can be expected going from GB to ICS.
Again, this is just my opinion. Do not take my word for it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
You have a good point there, build.prop was not something that had occurred to me.
The only thing that makes me suspicious of that particular theory is...surely all the ICS roms can't have the same build.prop settings, right? So if it was coming from there, I guess I'd be expecting to see some roms performing better or worse than others... and yet when it comes to flash video, they are pretty consistently bad, with little variation.
Thanks for the idea though, I hope that you're right and that this is just something that can be fixed by build.prop rewrites.
You do have adobe flash player installed right? Unlike gingerbread roms I don't know of an ics Rom that comes with flash player installed...when I had the infuse as soon as I installed flash player I never had a problem with flash videos...also I never had a problem with slower network speeds...

Hehehe yeah I'm not that much of a fool =P
I tested everything I'm talking about with flash player installed. ICS can't deal with the video, it sticks and sputters like a broken faucet... super choppy, stops and starts... etc.
I can't testify 100% but I'm pretty sure that my data speeds on ICS are reduced as compared to GB roms.
With Wi-Fi, however, I think the speeds are comparable.
If this was happening on a PC, I could fix it. My first thought would be video driver issues, so I would remove all traces and then install the newest version.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple on Android...
I've read tons of discussions with Entropy and others talking about the video libs, and I remember that while the idea of "perfect smooth video" sounds like something that should be easy/simple to accomplish... it's actually a pretty deep rabbit hole. It seemed to me it's a fairly complex problem that draws on a lot of areas and takes a lot of work to get right.
I just wonder what this could be... what did GB have that ICS doesn't?
thanks for the reply, mg =)

Well...ics is aosp/aokp...so it is highly likely it could be missing some video libs and what not...off the top of ky head I know for a fact that gb has TWframeworks as well as many different libs...I have no infuse to test the choppy video so when I say i never expiernced it that is just based off my memory...basically what in getting at is that your theory is possible

Thanks! yeah, I'm no android expert, I'm just going by what makes sense to me.
Assuming just for a second that video libs were in fact the issue...I have a couple questions.
Is there anyone who would know how to identify the specific source of the problem?
Is there any more information I could somehow get/provide that might help?
Or is this just the kind of issue where... ICS is pretty new still, and in time it will probably be fixed? (wait & see)

Well logcats always help...those say exactly what your phone is doing and provide all errors your phone is receiving...from what I've seen, pony (the guy providing logcats for the miui build) is good with logcats...but he's busy with miui. I'm not even sure if you would find anything useful in the logcat anyway since it is somewhat working...I'm sure it will be fixed in time though
So if you know how to logcat then get one and see what it says...if not than just wait, I'm sure someone will end up working on a fix

Hellfire Phoenix V2.3 p999 [cm7.2 /super tweeked] - audio/music stops randomly...

Hi,
Firstly, want to thank the dev for this great rom. I recently switched back from ICS because I couldn't take the lag/wanted a fully functioning operating system.
The main problem I' having with this rom is that when I'm listening to music/audio files they'll stop for no apparent reason. The only thing I can think of is that maybe they're stopping when I go in and out of service. When I either unlock and press play or switch apps and press play they start again with not problems. I've found this to happen in multiple audio player (Poweramp and BeyondPod being the two main ones I use).
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is incredibly frustrating.
Thanks very much for your hard work.
btw: the reason I didn't post this in the related dev forum is that I don't as yet have enough posts to do so...so no flaming please).
Nobody is gonna flame you for posting a question on the questions forum.. (unless you didn't search first)
I've had this happen to me as well with different ROM's. I don't believe its ROM specific. My problems were related to some of my notification settings. I also switched from the standard player to UberMusic. It's old but does the job well.

Can't be too careful when it comes to flames.
I thought it might be my notification settings but I've tried pretty much every permutation of those. Can't really bring myself to switch from PowerAmp (paid) and BeyondPod(free) is the best podcast player I've found to date...I might try reinstalling the rom, maybe I didn't wait long enough before using it?

Does the problem exist if you were to use Google Music? If it does, then it's most definitely a problem with the ROM. Try a re-install and if that doesn't clear it up, you might want try out a different ROM to see if it's the ROM or not.

Sadly, or happily as I love PowerAmp, it does occur with Google Music too. Never had this problem on eaglseblood gb (which I mainly used before trying a few ICS roms) but switched as their GB rom is no longer maintained. Will try re-flashing. Hopefully that helps.

Yeah, i just recently discovered this issue too, and it kind of bugs me.
Still haven't found a way around this. Tried reflashing the rom which didn't help. Just tried flashing faux's 49b1 to see if that helps. The dalvik cache is being very slowly rebuilt. The newer kernel (the one included in hellfire 2.3) has a MUCH faster loading time (at least upon first load). Will post if this helps with the sound issue.

Well. I'm still having this problem. I've tried multiple kernels, multiple roms and even completely formatted my phone (all partition including boot sector). No luck. Truly aggravating because aside from this issue, I love this rom. Very smooth/fast and stable. Not sure I can live with this audio problem though as it's incredibly frustrating.
If anyone else has encountered this problem and found a solution, please post. Thanks,
I just dl the old music player apk here see if it helps. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrtstudio.music
Also does it occur both when using headphones and not? I had issue with a set of headphones with a break in the wire, which would make the phone appear as though the headset was unplugged and plugged back in, which stopped playback constantly.
Let me know if this helps any.

Thanks for replying.
I'd wondered if that might be the reason too. I know it gains with different headphones as I've tried four different pairs. I'll have you try it without any and see. I did try disabling the setting for stop playback upon removal of headphones with no success. I'll try without headphones in and see. I'll have to flash the Rom again as I've been trying a few others out.

Did you get it figured out?

Sadly, no. I've tried playing music without headphones attached and the same problem occurs. Random stops. I go into whichever application (it happens in everyone single one I've tried) was playing an audio file and it starts up right where it left off when I press play.
It's worse now actually in that it occurs with whatever all roms. So now I'm left wondering if there's a micro fracture in the headphone sensor that only started acting up at the exact time I put Hellfire Phoenix 2.3 on my phone or if, somehow, it corrupted some base setting on the phone that even reformatting it can't get rid of.
Terribly aggravating. Debating taking it in for service but I need to find a Wind factory rom before I can do so. Think I saw one in the forums a few months ago. hopefully the link's still active.

I've reinstalled my phone's stock rom (WIND Mobile).
This seems to have sorted out the issue. I'm going to try reinstalling Hellsfire Phoenix in a few hours if it doesn't happen again (I'm playing music nwo and will continue for a couple hours to make sure).
I'm now wondering if maybe this was some sort of error caused by downgrading from an ICS build (hadn't occured to me previously but that's when I started having this issue and it didn't matter which GB rom I tried after that)? Hopefully this will be the end of these problems and I can enjoy Hellsfire Phoenix as it was great aside from that issue.
I'll post in a couple days if all goes well....or if it doesn't.

That's so odd. I'm curious to see what happens if you go from stock to HFP v2.3.

Well, sad to say that I still had that problem after trying HFP 2.3 again. So I went back to stock. This time it happened on stock too so I have to assume it's a hardware problem. I guess I just lucked out (well, poor luck in this case) that it went for four hours Friday without halting playback.
Better take it in for warranty service while it's still covered.
At least it seems unlikely that any rom/kernel combo was to blame now.
