Okay, maybe someone will know the answer to this.
Every single ICS rom I've tried... and I'm pretty sure that's all of them... has had abysmal performance playing flash video through a browser. I'm talking from
jt's original ICS... to
Entropy's ICS...to
uniporn
jblparisi's
remixICS
etc. etc.
Now, just to be clear... all of those ROMs that I mentioned I thoroughly enjoy... they had/have a lot of work put into them, and I thank the devs.
But this puzzles me... I had perfect flash video playback on a number of GB roms... notably AEON... now we move to ICS... and it's incapable of doing the same thing?
Also, whatever the problem is, it is some kind of common thread that runs through every ICS release for the infuse. I've tested. There is no example of this problem not being present.
Anyone have information, or a solution, or have noticed this problem themselves?
Thanks
I do agree with your statement.
I think this is due to the Wi-Fi and data speeds. Unlike GB ROMs, build.prop has not yet been extensively looked at in ICS ROMs. Network speed drops can be expected going from GB to ICS.
Again, this is just my opinion. Do not take my word for it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
You have a good point there, build.prop was not something that had occurred to me.
The only thing that makes me suspicious of that particular theory is...surely all the ICS roms can't have the same build.prop settings, right? So if it was coming from there, I guess I'd be expecting to see some roms performing better or worse than others... and yet when it comes to flash video, they are pretty consistently bad, with little variation.
Thanks for the idea though, I hope that you're right and that this is just something that can be fixed by build.prop rewrites.
You do have adobe flash player installed right? Unlike gingerbread roms I don't know of an ics Rom that comes with flash player installed...when I had the infuse as soon as I installed flash player I never had a problem with flash videos...also I never had a problem with slower network speeds...

Hehehe yeah I'm not that much of a fool =P
I tested everything I'm talking about with flash player installed. ICS can't deal with the video, it sticks and sputters like a broken faucet... super choppy, stops and starts... etc.
I can't testify 100% but I'm pretty sure that my data speeds on ICS are reduced as compared to GB roms.
With Wi-Fi, however, I think the speeds are comparable.
If this was happening on a PC, I could fix it. My first thought would be video driver issues, so I would remove all traces and then install the newest version.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple on Android...
I've read tons of discussions with Entropy and others talking about the video libs, and I remember that while the idea of "perfect smooth video" sounds like something that should be easy/simple to accomplish... it's actually a pretty deep rabbit hole. It seemed to me it's a fairly complex problem that draws on a lot of areas and takes a lot of work to get right.
I just wonder what this could be... what did GB have that ICS doesn't?
thanks for the reply, mg =)

Well...ics is aosp/aokp...so it is highly likely it could be missing some video libs and what not...off the top of ky head I know for a fact that gb has TWframeworks as well as many different libs...I have no infuse to test the choppy video so when I say i never expiernced it that is just based off my memory...basically what in getting at is that your theory is possible

Thanks! yeah, I'm no android expert, I'm just going by what makes sense to me.
Assuming just for a second that video libs were in fact the issue...I have a couple questions.
Is there anyone who would know how to identify the specific source of the problem?
Is there any more information I could somehow get/provide that might help?
Or is this just the kind of issue where... ICS is pretty new still, and in time it will probably be fixed? (wait & see)

Well logcats always help...those say exactly what your phone is doing and provide all errors your phone is receiving...from what I've seen, pony (the guy providing logcats for the miui build) is good with logcats...but he's busy with miui. I'm not even sure if you would find anything useful in the logcat anyway since it is somewhat working...I'm sure it will be fixed in time though
So if you know how to logcat then get one and see what it says...if not than just wait, I'm sure someone will end up working on a fix

I have been using this build for quite a while now and decided to write a review of the ROM. Please keep in mind I am not a developer !!! I am simply writing this from a user standpoint and cannot nor will not support your problems. This is a review based on my opinions and usage of the ROM.
Pros:
I do like the UI. It is fairly stable and I haven't had much trouble out of it for the most part. The combination of ADW Launcher and the Cyanogen settings are great. The speed of the ROM is pretty good for a ported ROM based on GingerBread. I can't complain much about that. General things that I like are the advanced menus for customizing the dock and theme settings. The themed settings change icons for contacts, mail, messaging, phone, browser, calendar, and videos ( I may have missed some). The cyanogen settings cover an array of things that you can poke at but in my opinion should be included with stock builds as well. Overall if you were wanting to use this on a daily basis I think you would be ok to go ahead and install this ROM... NOTE: Don't hold me responsible if you brick your phone trying. It isn't one of the easiest roms I've
ever installed. The sleep policy has been fixed so that the phone doesn't reboot on unlock...which on my first flash hadn't been fixed and really really turned me off from this ROM.
Cons: I have yet to figure out why this is (again not a dev) but your microSD card will not mount when connected to the pc. I'm sure they are working on this but I haven't downloaded an update or nightly (which is current at the time of this post btw) that has fixed it. I do have some random picky things that I can't get an answer to, and good luck if you do...feel free to send them to me also. Some of my .mp3 ringtones will not work period. Different ones of even larger file size work... I'm not sure how that works out. Text messaging (native) doesn't work for incoming or outgoing... But I will say that I was having issues with that before so I can't blame that on this ROM. There are a few apps that won't work with this build easy uninstaller is one, I just get a fc. Battery is another issue that may be addressed with future releases. I don't run GPS (so don't ask if it's accurate) but keep wifi on all the time. I get probably about 8 hours with wifi on all the time. Not the best but definitely not the worst. You also cannot charge the phone while it is off... really not sure why, and the extended power menu doesn't work. And for the most part is an in depth install procedure... Back to stock with odin, flash two kernals, then a couple of files... Pretty lengthy and you have to be precise or else it bricks. Here it is if your interested... Thanks to MobileTechVideos for the instructions and video.
How to install CyanogenMod7
Other than that I have had virtually no problems (that I consider major) with this ROM and do like it and will probably continue to use it. If you have any general questions please feel free to ask. Again, again... I am not a dev so questions of that nature should be posted here: CyanogenMod7
I tried it and liked what works but it is still alpha quality and so i will wait for a few weeks until i give it another shot.

I agree, it is definitely still a beta build and as noted by Cyanogen... hasn't been put into the stable build section of their forums. I do look forward to a stable build. Perhaps the Dev's can address some of the weird issues that I mentioned above.
i also was not able to send multi media mms never would go through i tried for 20 mins to receive and send ,
this rom is great but here is why it sucks, i watch the cyanogen nightlies for the galaxy s phones, and with the types of updates im seeing on the cappy versus lets say the vibrant , there is no ****ing hope and this rom is dead.
the last update fixed an install file wtf. so at this rate cyanogen will be rc in o id say next year. ill have a new phone by then. my money is on miui

Well you completely forgot to mention that, currently it cannot handle lots of video format, most importantly mkv and even if you find something like Rock Player, there's a lot of lag in it. You cannot charge the phone while its off (because it'll turn on as soon as you plug the charger in). Also, you might encounter a totally new problem which you may not have an idea about. If captivate is your spare phone then play with it else stay away for a while until a RC is released.
This is just my opinion from 3 days of experience on CM7.

It was a total flop for me :/
It ran well when I first installed it, but started running "funny" (random crashing) after I installed gapps, then totally started crapping out after the 3/16 update.
I ended up ditching it for a 2.2 rom, mostly because I didn't feel I was gaining anything substantive and losing things I regularly use, like a feature rich camera app and divx playback support.
Been running for 3 days. 0 problems.
I've ran into a few bugs. External SD, booting when usb plugged in. Only charging to 95% (apparently a feature not a bug). At one point my signal shot down to searching, then it recovered and grabbed a signal. Not sure what caused that, but it was random.
I also cannot get it to mount to my PC. Kind of annoying, but if I need to transfer anything I just use dropbox.
I like it, and I think I'll keep with it. Even though it isn't 100%, I love gingerbread, and it's working for me.

I did forget that you cannot charge the phone while off and now that you mention it the extended power menu doesn't work either. It is fairly aggravating that Cyanogen updates the vibrant with "real" fixes other than this fixing little things but... All in all, it is still usable, just not stable or reliable.
Every time I try and warn someone that CM7 is not yet ready for primetime I get bashed for it, yet there seem to be plenty of people echoing my comments. Like I said in another thread, the people that are saying CM7 is stable and works great are either not using their device to its full potential or are willing to live without certain features. There is really no compelling reason to live with a ROM that has this many bugs or deficiencies when you consider how many really good ROMs there are available for our Cappys that have few, if any, issues. Yeah, they may not have Gingerbready theming or cutesy animations, but they just work. Andromeda 1.2 is one that comes to mind.
I am on it from I think last friday...Not a single problem...atleast how i use it...of course except battery life...which I am trying to solve...
Rock player worked well for me...I watched couple of movies when I was on road....never lagged just stopped couple of times....
great GPS...instant locks...i am amazed...But I also tried MIUI...and it is very very fast...and something different which I never experienced before...I think people should give it a try...ofcourse it has bugs too as it based on CM7...but they fixed camera bug and little stuff.....

I am by no means saying that it is ready for the masses... The only one that I would suggest without a second thought to someone who isn't willing to deal with at least some problems is Cognition Series by DesignGears. To my knowledge (and opinion) this is the absolute best rom for the captivate. IF ... Cyanogen gets to the point of a Cognition rom in function and use, then I might suggest it for the masses but not until then.

Your right in regard to it not being ready for most users (many are already praising the miui 2.3.3 also which is even less stable.....not saying it isn't promising). I think it breaks into 2 camps.
1. If you are a power user that wants all aspects of your device to function as intended...not for you. More specifically, If you use an external SD especially if your moving files to and from mounted to a PC....this is not the rom for you (this is my biggest gripe at this point). If you do lots of video in different formats...not for you as you will face compatibility issues. If you have to ask how your flash back to stock....this is probably not for you. If you value battery life as a top priority...not yet for you. Most of the other deficiencies or shortcomings had adequate work arounds but you until the major issues are resolved you will quickly find yourself flashing back to Phoenix, Firefly, Serendipity, Andromeda, etc.)
2. If you don't use and external SD and/or do much media vid/music then i can see why many view this as "stable" for their purposes. The UI, menus, and animations are smooth/fast and i never really had any issues with force closes while using it. Maybe its better linguistically to say its incomplete rather than refer to is as unstable and sorry if it offends the early adopters but if you are using it as your daily driver its pretty obvious you are using an inferior rom @ this point.

i would easily put a handful of roms on par with cognition:
Firefly, Supernova, Phoenix, Serendipity, Andromeda.

Excellent post.
Glad to see users sharing their experience on CM7. This is always good foe the community. I hope to see new users to read this thread prior to making any decision whether to flash CM7 2.3.3 or not.
On another note, I'm sure once Samsung do final release of Gingerbread 2.3.3 for i9000 series (last I heard that an early beta was released), we cappyites will see stable release.

Regarding the phone turning on when charging, I believe it's a gingerbread "feature". It's been said that it is working as intended. Also, the iphone does the same thing so I don't really see it as an issue. It's probably google seeing behavior they like and implementing it.
You can not mount the external sd but you can transfer to your internal then on the phone transfer to external, so I am not certain it Is fair to say you can not use your external sd. Video is an issue, and battery is as well.
At this point in time it is a trade off, there are several things cm7 can't do well or can not do at all. there are also several things it does much better than any 2.2 rom or are not available on 2.2 roms.
Its all preference and priorities. Kinda like any best rom discussion.

Largely it its because you have never used it, and have only tried one rom. That and you are compelled to jump on any thread that mentions it as if it is a personal mission. It its not as if you do not make some valid points, but it is not hard to see why it may rub some the wrong way after a while.

Agreed... I was not trying to start a thread to bash any rom. However I do know that there are some hard feelings that are out based on certain features that work or don't and peoples impressions about the ROM itself. I also know that there is quite a bit of loyalty to certain ROM creators that no matter what they aren't going to be going to a new ROM simply because they are loyal to that dev... which is fine! I simply wanted to create an avenue for people who have used the ROM to pass along information and opinions on the ROM to people who are thinking about switching to it. People are entitled to their opinions and I am all for that... Just don't bash any of the devs or their work, it is not easy putting this stuff together and I for one am happy that I have a place I can go to that allows me to get away from stock. I hope that all will realize that

The terminology might be better as incomplete instead of unstable. great post.
With the recent lag fixes, superchargers and browser fix, and youtube work arounds, no more data drops, phone calls actually working, aside from video recording i don't really see any more big bugs associated with ICS Roms. I have decided to try out an ICS ROM. I looked through the forums about the best ICS Roms and see those two as the consistent winners, so it would be great if someone could give me to choose one over the other.
P.S. Also, the first sentence is just my assumption that there are no more major issues with those roms, but if there are any more big issues like gps not working or maybe some of the fixes I mentioned above aren't included in all current ICS roms it would be appreciated if someone pointed that out. Thanks

I usually always use Domination, although I have a soft spot in my heart for HFS since it was my first ICS ROM. Currently using the new version of Genesis and actually don't have any plans to try out Paranoid.
You're going to have to do what we all do and just try the ROMs yourself. Plus, it's fun switching ROMs every once in a while!
I've tried them all, and I always come back to Genesis. IMO, it's the most customizable, and the newest Stable build runs great.
But, try them all out. Don't take anybody's word on which is best, they all have pros and cons. You just have to figure out which one fits you the best

I am trying paranoidandroid right now and I am waiting for Tony, I think it is, to get the data fix from the EB team because the data drops are kinda annoying. However, everything else works fine, except it can be a bit laggy sometimes but that of course is because of the lack of hardware acceleration.

Trying JellyBAM. Camera crashes the phone when flash goes off (although flashlight works fine). My corporate mail/calendar account also can't access the right security settings, so I'm crippled for work purposes. If you use these features, consider something other than JellyBAM.
Tried PACman but switched. Don't recall why, now. Maybe I'll try it again. . . .

PACman and JellyBAM have the same base and kernel so you will have the same issues connecting to work email.
I've seen other users post this about the camera flash crashing things, but I was never able to recreate it. So I just summed it up to an improper wipe/flash. No one has offered any kind of logs either to go along with said crashes, but that's not saying it will help because again we can't recreate these issues during testing.

Inaccurate exaggeration is nobody's friend. It's a nice ROM, sure, but saying it has less issues than stock? You just lost any further credibility.
Happens to be my opinion based on my own personal experience however. And will remain so.
I'm kinda like you david, I consider a ROM 100% when it runs 100% of the things I have to have or need. I realize it can't be like that for everyone but for those that it is, it allows a person to enjoy WAY more ROMs. JMO.....

But when I read reviews of a ROM, maybe I'm wanting to try it but trying to determine what things other people are encountering. Someone who says, "This ROM is perfect! Everything works!" but then I find out that, no, everything doesn't work and even they later admit that "some things aren't working but I can overlook that", well, that totally invalidates the entire thread. How am I to trust anything that person writes about anything else? Yes, we have subjective opinions about ROMs, but it does nobody any favor to exaggerate the abilities of a ROM. If you tell me a ROM is perfect and "better than stock", then I have some extra high expectations.
I understand completely. But there is more to a declaration of perfection than the statement itself. It would depend on who makes it and their knowledge of different ROMs but to me it just means it's damn close. I usually find out the details when I run it myself. That's when I'm reminded that nothing is perfect. Even the original developers don't distribute perfection and there is a HUGE well paid team of them.
I can appreciate anyone's expectations of a shared original ROM or a port to be one of perfection but that usually means the person with those expectations just doesn't realize all that's involved. People have to remember that this is more a personally fulfilling "hobby" than their vocation.
My biggest frustration is people wanting something that works 100%. Compared to what? Stock? Half the time the "Stock" ROMs have their own issues. That's why we root and ROM, to improve the experience over Stock.
What features do you want? What's your opinion of 100%? Sense? AOSP?
Hell, even the title of the thread isn't 100% accurate. There isn't an official ICS ROM, so there can't be a debloated version. And the word "Best" implies that there are at least 2 ICS Roms that work 100%....
[/Rant]
(Crap, I obviously need more sleep over the weekends....)
Weekends are too short ya know.

Exactly This.
In even the best ICS "closest to what factory would be" ROM I've found (Virtuous Primadonna), 1080p recording, WiFi calling, and tethering were borked. To me 100% means 100% as in all options the phone came with work and not having options taken away.
MikTouch is still the best I've found. Once the Xperia ZL drop for purchase I'm bailing on my MT4GS. I absolutely love this phone, but I hate HTC with a burning of a thousand suns for bailing on this phone which was supposed to be a flagship device.

wifi calling works on ALL ics roms. there is a workaround for tethering involving barnacle and open garden. so that leaves 1080p recording

Did you flash the wifi calling patch and push gan optimizer.apk to system apps?

How do you think this would affect us?
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...me-with-new-experimental-virtualization-tech/
To me, it almost seems like a way of dual-booting but... simultaneously, pretty much. I think I could work/deal with this if it ever comes down to it. It sounds like even if radio functions weren't on one ROM, we could just have a fully working Gingerbread, or even a hackfest on the otherside carrying the team.
Of course, even this tech is still in it's early stages.
What do you guys think? Devs, would this possibly solve some issues?
Probably not the MAIN one.
Edit: "getting"? ... I meant get. ._.

This device often runs out of RAM if you use a lot of apps simultaneously, so I can't imagine running TWO android ROMs at the same time. The Out of memory killer will get crazy!

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Well, maybe someone could make some kind of severly gimped rom that only runs the radio?
I still doubt that would help out the memory TOO much, but.. I dunno... Maybe like a 2.2/2.3 ROM?
This is all still just wishes and hopes for now, though.
I wouldn't mind having a 2nd rom used purely for calling and texting
Interesting read indeed. Although, by the time technology and proper coding permits something like this most of us would have probably moved on to another device. Although I plan on keeping my g2x for as long devs keep making roms, kernals and mods for it.
However I'm currently running eagles blood ics 4.0.4. And I mist say its the closest to a fully functioning ics rom on this phone that I can tell. I wouldn't be planning to flash cm7 on it if it weren't tor the inability to record video and wifi calling.....these are the only 2 functions that do not work....that I unfortunately need. The customization is fairly good on stock settings, stock kernal is fast, battery is good enough and the voltage is completely tweakable if you want to make it last longer.

Hi All!
Recently, while surfing through the ocean of ROMs for my LG G2X P999, I came across this ROM. Couldn't find any link related to this on XDA. So thought of pointing the G2X owners to this link:
http://www.androidauthority.com/g2x-p999-t-mobile-cyanogenmod-10-cm10-unofficial-115536/
Flashed it just yesterday. Apart from the Video-recording did not notice any bugs so far. In fact I haven't used it enough to comment on bugs. But I can confirm that Calls and Wifi are both working fine.
If any one knows any prior publication of this work on XDA; please let me know so we can avoid duplicates.
Hackfest in development section.

It doesn't,
I can't get it to work on anything that is not CM7 based.
Kinda blows that our phone is limited to cm7. I love cm7 as it is treating me well, but selection is always a nice privilege

so data is working? i thought the data or radio was still broken. does this mean we may get a somewhat stable build of JB?
Still a hackfest.

I tried a couple different versions of CM7 over the past few days, and its nothing but a nightmare. It will run flawlessly for hours and then something quirky will happen and I either cant get data, or cant make calls, or my screen locks up, and im rebooting the phone or looking for a fix on google. Wound up just going back to the stock rom with faux123 kernel.

Well the problem is that other developers take the vanilla cm7 code and tweak/mod the hell out of it which is always awesome but they put out an unstable build/ROM. If you haven't tried vanilla CM7.2 from get.cm (latest build) then you're missing out. I have had the ROM installed running with mazout's latest kernel for over a week now and its been running extremely well. All and any problems that I experienced with this setup were directly due to ignorance and human error as I'm still a flaming n00b. At the same time they were great learning experiences and easily fixed.

The problem is going to lie in your setup somewhere.
Maybe kernel level as it is known that some G2xs will run great on Trinity but crash on Faux and vice versa. That's just a quick example.
I've run vanilla CM7 for like 13 months now and do not encounter the issues you are describing.
Soooo...what's your setup.

Data does work but there is issue related to rapid battery drain. Back to my stock ROM. This hasn't been updated since a long time. I wonder if any developer at all is working on this phone or not!

You are late to the party... This device is a dying device. There's 1 dev working on a CM7 Kernel and that's about it. More than likely we will never see fully working 4.1.1 or higher on our device. They tried real hard and are some talented people (our devs), but LG handed them a broken pile of excrement and said, "here you go... Jellybeans!!"...

That's almost all true! I have another old phone, Mytouch4g/HTC Glacier. On that one I am running 4.2.2 and there is a lot of development still on. Huge number of ROMs which can be used as daily drivers. But here we don't even have a perfectly working 4.0.4. But again, no complain to Developers. they have tried really hard with a lot of time invested in this device. All the blame on LG.
This phone is lightning fast on 2.3.X variants. still very much usable. I may be late to the party, but the party is yet not over
I just want to chime in that I used this and the phone is working. The camera seems slower (and therefore more blurry). Other than that everything that I use (I do not use bluetooth, tethering, or wi-fi calling) is working. It's about the same speed as CM7 I had on here before. Don't know about battery since I only just did it.
If anyone knows any tricks for the camera please share. I babysit a toddler and his face is often blurry in photos. I'm pretty sure with this new ROM it will be even more blurred. I have already removed the plastic cover over the camera lens, it's not that issue. This is clearly software as it has gotten slower with this ROM.
We thought we might have a jellybean breakthrough when cm started deving cm10.1 on the p990 and had the courtesy of posting a half port of their work in progress. I believe it's called AdamPK's cm10.1 and is usually found with Mazout360 kernel. Hardware Acceleration Work so no camera, camcorder, sluggish or other problems that plagued the hackfests but they ran into and issue with the radio because O2x and G2x use different radio chips. So you have wifi but no data and battery can't be read correctly but other than that it would be as close to a perfect 4.x as we could get.
