I just picked up my Infuse today, and it came preloaded with a 1080p trailer that looked pretty stunning on the phone. A few hours later, I'm running Darky 10.2.2 Final and everything is setup and working perfectly when I realize that the I9000 doesn't support >720p playback—and surely enough, I can no longer play 1080p videos on my Infuse. But then I flashed Infused, and I'm still unable to play videos >720p.
Is there any known way of enabling 1080p playback on Gingerbread? I did searching, but I couldn't find any topics about 1080p playback. Is this a bug, or is it a feature limited to AT&T ROM's for some reason?
Edit: Actually, I did some more testing and noticed that video support is abysmal compared to my Captivate. Some of my 720p videos (that play fine on my Captivate) are just a black screen and no sound, while others play fine. Also, playing videos using the software decoder of players like MX Video Player and MoboPlayer works just fine on my Captivate, but the same videos played in software on my Infuse result in a garbled, robotic sound and laggy video. These are pretty annoying problems, considering that my Captivate used to be my PMP and I expected the Infuse to be even better.

The reason you are having these problems is that none of the Gingerbread
custom roms here are the official AT&T release.
Instead the Gingerbread roms here were dumped from the Canadian Rogers
Infuse phones.
If you really are not satisfied with the current Rogers Gingerbread custom roms
then there is only one way to get the video playback to work according to
the Samsung Infuse specifications.
You will need to flash a Samung Infuse Froyo custom rom or go back to the
original stock Froyo rom which your phone came with.
Here are two links for you, one is for GTG's Infused v1.60 Froyo custom rom
which can be found here with complete step by step instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105413
This other link is for GTG's Infuse Froyo stock rom with step by step instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
Either one of these two roms will play back videos according to the
Samsung Infuse specifications.
I would suggest to go with the Infused v1.60 custom rom since its
a lot faster and smoother plus it has many extra features and options.
Good luck!
Are you playing the same 1080p trailer? It may be possible to pull libs from ki3 or ki4 into infused but it seems kinda useless since the infuse screen is only 480x800 and there is no NHL support in any non att rom. You may want to get Odin or heimdall and run the ki3 leak (better modem) or ki4 leak with the ki3 modem. Just flash it with the hellraiser kernel first ( easiest in heimdall 1.1 since you extract the package so you don't need to write into the package and worry about permissions. Issues) then flash the proper kernel after the phone has booted once. This will give you a rooted att 2.3.5 rom with HDMI but no recovery get sgs kernel flasher to flash back to the hellraiser kernel if you need recovery for any reason (this kernel breaks audio over usb and HDMI ). I ran my phone like this a coupe weeks and was pretty happy with it except for the rainbow garbage on boot.

Yea, it's the exact same set of videos. And I know the screen is only 800x480, but I have a large library of HD videos including 1080p and I don't like to spend hours converting files to reduce quality and take up additional space I don't really care about MHL/HDMI, I have laptops and HTPC's for that.
I might give KI3/4 a try, since I already flashed back to stock only to run into an unfixable (without factory reset) market bug. Do you know if they have the same format support as Froyo, or if the kernel has any effect on media playback?
Edit: Nvm. I just realized custom kernels won't boot the ROM and a Voodoo sound+OC kernel is a must for me.

Use entropy or hellraiser kernel. Yes they and others boot the rom. Older kernels had no wifi but Linux bozo and entropy pulled in initramfs mods from the ki4 kernel fixing that and improving data speeds. Just remember if you go to the stock kernel ( doesn't sound like you will) you would need to disable voodoo.
I posted a deodexed ki3 but it had issues. The email app wouldn't install and it was kinda slow. It ran much better odexed.

Hmm, I might give it a try. I'm on Infused 1.6 for now, but I've noticed that a lot of video playback issues still persists and seem to only affect the Infuse, regardless of the ROM it's running. Other I9000-based phones don't have these issues, so I'm pretty disappointed since there doesn't seem to be any fix available.

I sold my Motorola Atrix because I couldn't stand the phone and I ended up picking up a Captivate a few days ago for $160 in excellent condition.
Anyways, I installed Serendipity rom and I can't watch ANY flash videos without it being very choppy. Every 2 seconds it stops for a quick moment and then continues. It's the newest version of flash. I tried Hulu and it doesn't work at all, only black screen. I've been searching on here for a resolution and haven't been able to find anything. I've seen videos online of flash videos working flawlessly.
If anyone can help me, It would be greatly appreciated it. Thanks in advance!
Its probably your location. When i'm at home i can stream vids on my Cappy faster and smoother than my 2 year old laptop, but when i visit my brother it breaks up pretty often at first. Letting it sit for about 5mins fixes it for me. But when i try to watch another vid it starts breaking up and i have to sit and wait again. Have you tried browsers like Opera Mobile and Skyfire? They stream better than the standard browser for me.

It does this no matter where I am. I've been using Dolphin and the stock browser. At work we have 20mbps down and at home I got 15mbps and it does this at both locations. Let me try the different browsers and if not, what do you think about changing the rom?
Also what rom do you have?
Thanks for the reply!
I had acceptable flash playback with Serendipity 6.3. It'd run a bit choppy at times, but mostly decent so long as you didn't resize the window or scroll while the video was running.
I'm getting MUCH MUCH better playback with the stock 2.3.3 firmware. The browser seems to be hardware accelerated and the flash video playback has desktop-like smoothness, even during scrolling and resizing.

I've been running Dragon RC6.1 with Speedmod K13E kernel for almost a week. It took about a day and a half for the 2 to sync but performance and battery life are really good now.
I'd say try different ROM's and see what you get. I've tried Serendipity, SpeedNLooks, and Phoenix ROM's and had absolutely no problem with them. But when i jumped from Andromeda 2.2 to Andromeda 3 and from DragonRC6 to DragonRC7 i found the older version just worked better for me.

Skyfire doesn't actually use adobe flash The video is decoded on skyfire's servers and streamed to your phone via some other method. Their whole "thing" was to provide flash support for phones that didn't support it natively. Kind of pointless on Android phones these days.
There actually isn't a stock 2.3 rom built specifically for the captivate yet and we still don't have a fully compatible kernel. The installation process is a bit involved at this point, so unless you like spending a day tinkering, giving up certain features (screen rotation), and potentially bricking (seriously), you might want to hold off for a bit.
If not, and you're willing to take the plunge, you can get the stock firmware from www.samfirmware.com (XWJVB) and flash it via odin. Be severely warned that this will flash new bootloaders, which can potentially permabrick your phone if things go boom while it's flashing sbl.bin. Warning #2, the key combo for recovery and download mode will have changed - download mode is now vol down+menu+power, recovery is vol up+power.
After you've flashed the official i9000 2.3, you can either stick with it and flash xcaliburinhand's partially-reoriented beta kernel, or you can flash any of the other 2.3 roms from the i9000 dev section and flash xcal's kernel over them. You should also read through the kernel thread in the dev section. There is a lot of good info in there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042543
Things you'll lose by flashing 2.3: Screen auto-rotation, BLN, Voodoo (lagfix, sound, color), ability to overclock, probably a few other less significant things.

A new Skyfire must've came out. I was watching live streaming through the actual flash player not the converter they have. It looks like i'll just try CM7 2.3.3 and see how that goes. I'm assuming CM7 and the 2.3 leak both have the same capabilities, right? I just really want to have a stable flash player. Thanks for your help!

CM7 flash performance is comparable to serendipity 6.* in my experience. It doesn't have the same hardware accelerated browser that the JVB rom has.

Not really. You'll be flashing the firmware and bootloaders, so it's essentially like flashing back to stock, except now stock is 2.3 and your orientation is mental. Check out the kernel thread, it has instructions.
I'm on Firefly 2.9 currently about to flash to 3.0 with Speedmod K13E and flash runs fine on my phone, it's more dependent on my connection than anything else.
You would like to check the version of ur flash player too.
I know there are some newer versions of flash player that actually degrade the performance of existing devices.
Flash player is poorly implemented in general, you will need some test to find the best fit version.
I just recently rooted my droid, and started using CM7 for the first time (less than a week ago), and I'm loving it so far. The only issue I have is that my camera doesn't work right.
I can start it up fine, and even take pictures, the only problem is, I can't see what I'm taking a picture of until it's already taken.
My camera app just shows a black screen in the box where it normally shows the image you're about to capture, however you can see bits and pieces of the image poking through the transparent UI.
I'm sure other's have encountered this issue and there's some way to fix it.
(This happens with all camera apps, not just the default one, and I'm running CM7.0.3 specifically)
Which phone? Have you re-flashed atleast once to see if that does anything..? Im running cm7 with no issue except for the shutter lag. Drives me nuts..

Are you running a different kernel than Kali's that is stock in Cm7? That could be it.
I used the kernal listed here for DHD for CM7
I couldn't find an actual download link for the one you mentioned, which is why I didn't use it, could you possibly link me to a download if it's not to much trouble?

Try a full wipe and reinstall CM7, but this time don't install any kernel. The kernel that comes with CM7 is fine, especially if you're having weird unexplained problems when running a non-stock kernel.
edit: Your post says you have a Droid phone but I'm assuming you meant Inspire since you're posting here in this section. Droid is an actual line of phones made by Motorola (sorry if I'm being picky )
If you really want a custom kernel, Lord Mod is great. Don't use Ultimate Edition though. It is for Later Noghtlies. Version 5.x is great though.
when I initially tried using CM7, I attempted to use it without any custom Kernel, because I thought it did have one built in (Whic i know it does now) but when I tried to boot it without installing a kernel, my phone wouldn't boot at all, it just infinitly looped the cm7 loading screen.
(and yes I do have an inspire, that's why I posted here =P)
Okay, I have tried 2 different .avi videos and both quit playback after 1 second. There is never any video and you can hear the first second of audio. After finding another video player and playing it using software decoding, it worked but wasnt in snyc with audio.

Thats odd. I can play multiple file types and codecs no problem. Make sure you're on 1.7.15 and maybe try some alternate kernels, glitch from the fascinate forums works amazingly for me.
If you still have issues, try...
1. Battery pull, this fixes some random radio issues and other things. Can't hurt to try.
2. Reflash rom and whatever kernel you use if you use one.
3. Data wipe/factory reset in recovery. You can make backups with titanium and miui to get everything back.
If you still have issues try using cm7, omfgb, some other rom and if it doesn't work there then it's your phone.

I dont think i use a kernel? Care to explain?
A kernel is sorta like the base of the rom in layman's terms. The rom is what you see and interact with and the kernel is like the underlying drivers that make things tick... you are running the standard kernel that comes with the rom. You can check the Fascinate development forum for kernels, I recommend Glitch for the best speed and awesomeness. It'll just give you extra features, speed, and possibly fix your problems.

And, like mt3g said, CM7 also works really well. Although others complain that it's buggy for them, but that's just the nature of these phones: what works for one phone, doesn't work well for another. Trial and error is your strange bedfellow.

If you want something easy to customize, I recommend Hellfire Phoenix over EaglesBlood because its based on the newest CM7 source, which includes a lot of fixes and more tweaks.
Now if you want a stock look (along with that better stock battery life), I recommend Bionix Reloaded v1.4.1 because its heavily tweaked for better battery life, and gives you all the stock Tmo apps like Wifi Calling, DLNA Sharing, etc.
The kernel is important too, and I always used Faux's kernel without any problems. In fact, using Faux helped solve some, as people running other kernels weren't able to play games such as Draw Something.

I like CM7, but have been running Hell Fire Phoenix for a LONG time, and love it.
Specific reqs
My wife is a medical professional and is sometimes "on call". I bought our phones a year ago, and didn't switch from stock 2.2.2, because no ROM/kernel (if I'm using those terms correctly) seem to be able to fix the Black Screen Of Death. So now I wonder the same - which ROM and or kernel is the most stable? She loves the stock LG camera, doesn't use BT nor WiFi calling - she NEEDS STABILITY!!! I know I can search thru the dev forum, but there are many posts, some by zealots. I'm looking for opinions from people who have tried many. It could be that the new LG V21Y will be good for her....
She doesn't need to customize - she just wants a phone that is working every time she pulls it out of her purse.
I vote for LG's stock 2.3.4 with new baseband.
My wife has not rebooted her G2x since updating to the new V21y/2.3.4. It's been at least a month for her w/o ANY complaints. She used to ***** at least daily about needing to pull the battery or reboot. Call quality is much improved, but what really impresses me is the speed and accuracy of the GPS now (not sure how much that matters for your wife). Battery seems to be at least as good as when I run the latest CM Nightly with Morfic's Trinity ELP kernel underclocked.
I too keep a nandroid backup of the new stock rom on my G2x. I find it the most stable of anything I've tried. Recently I've been on Hellfire Phoenix w/ either Morfic's ELP or Faux's 50b6 kernel. I've also been through all the recent Cyanogenmod releases lately.
Benefits of the stock ROM...
-No black screens of death
-Great battery life
-Clear in-call sound
-Quick GPS locks
-Minimal force closes
Compared to CM-based ROM's I mostly miss the brightness controlled by sliding across the status bar, the status bar toggles, the CM themes, and the "render effect" that allows me to pick the hue of the screen. I like to run the red one (least bright) when I just can't stop using the phone at night.
I am beginning to play with the rooted 2.3.4 (Thanks kwes1020) in hopes of regaining some of that custom functionality that I miss from the CM-based builds...

Brand new G2X (got the $30 T-mobile Walmart plan), running 2.3.4 on the March 2012 BB, kernel 2.6.32.9 (if that matters)
Basically I'm looking for something stable, though I am interested in customization.
Features that are important to me:
Battery Life, speed, GPS, WiFi Calling, Bluetooth streaming (but dont care about Bluetooth calling), fast camera
Based on all my reading in these forums, I think I should be looking for a GingerBread ROM that allows some neat customization. CM7 7.2 Stable seems to be the most recommended right now. Is that right?
Also, though I have a couple years experience with Android, this will be the first time I root a phone and install a custom ROM. I was planning to use the video tutorials at theunlockr.com to start the process. Having watched all those, it looks like there are 3 steps:
1. Root: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2x/
2. Flash Custom Recovery Image: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-flash-a-custom-recovery-image-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
3. Load Custom ROM: http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
However, I saw in another thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761772&page=2 ) that "There is no need to root your stock Rom if you are using NVFlash to flash CWM."
So, is this a newer method or the same thing that unlockr.com is instructing me to do?
I know that's alot, but thanks for any advice...

Well, I rooted my phone for the first time about 3 months ago and I used the unlockr method. As long as you follow step by step instructions everything should go smoothly, I screwed it up and had to reload stock rom, but that just made me understand the process better.
As for which ROM to get, I tried various ones Eaglesblood, Hellfire both ICS and GB and I found that the one I liked the best was Hellfire CM7.2 supertweaked. I couldn't do ICS because I actually want to watch videos on my phone and it was too laggy. However, Hellfire ran smoothly and the battery life is amazing compared to stock. I have had this phone on mostly standby for a whole day and it was still on 60% battery life. There are no problems with wifi and camera is good. I am not sure about bluetooth since i don't use it, but the news is that there will soon be fixes to any bluetooth issues.
An extra piece of advice, if you are going to root your phone and I recommend you get the Auto Memory Manager and FasterGPS app. The former is better than app killer, which are bad for your device and the second will immensely increase GPS lock on time.

Well, I rooted my phone for the first time about 3 months ago and I used the unlockr method. As long as you follow step by step instructions everything should go smoothly, I screwed it up and had to reload stock rom, but that just made me understand the process better.

Thanks for the quick response. So, did you do the 3 videos in that order? That is my plan. And I will look for the Hellfire ROM, thanks.
I've been playing around with my friend's Infuse after fixing the power button/boot loop issue. I did flash it to CM11, though it did run beautifully, found there were issues with the video recorder (choppy). I brute forced it back (an epic battle with the AT&T logo loop) to rooted GB stock with Zen's Synthesis kernal and CWM.
I'm looking for the most stable rom that doesn't have camera issues. From what I was reading that it is hit or miss from ICS and up. Should I just leave it as is? I'm thinking about flashing a GB rom like Aeon or Revenant. The biggest complaint with this phone was battery drain, so I got all of the bloat off with Titanium.
I'm asking because my friend needs a daily driver with no problems--she doesn't know how to fix things if something arises.

I found CarbonROM to be less buggy than Beanstalk 4.4.2 or CM 10.1, but then again, I didn't extensively run/test it like the others, including the camcorder. I did hear that you cannot do HD recording with it. If that is a problem, should stick with stock Gingerbread.
Lollipop may change things, but Eclipse does use Froyo as a baseline for software requirements by default. It may be GB now, but even then you would be safe for a year until Android 5.1 comes out (Gingerdeath won't happen overnight).
Thanks!
I'm more apt to stick as close to stock as possible on other people's devices because we all know strange things can and do happen. But I just couldn't help myself trying to update it as far as possible. I'll see how she feels about the HD recording and take it from there.
