Video Format - Eee Pad Transformer Themes and Apps

I did some searching and didn't find an answer so I thought I'd ask. I've tried to play a couple of videos from the mini-sd card, one in .mkv and one .avi without success. I have Format factor so conversions aren't a problem provided I know what is needed. My questions are...
1. What is the best format and resolution?
2. Are there any particular storage location requirements, such as no SD card to have movies play properly?
3. Is there a player that I should be using other than the default.
FYI, I am currently on rooted stock 3.1
Thank you in advance for any help!

Not a direct answer to your question, but I have found that there are very few video files that I can't get to play off of the microSD card between Moboplayer (with the codec it will ask you to add from the market the first time you open it up) and Rockplayer. I have tons of just random files in different formats that just seem to work in at least one of those players. Much easier to install those apps then convert a bunch of files.
Hope that helps enough, otherwise I hope someone can answer your more specific questions.

Ideally it would be any format that can be played back with the default player via hardware acceleration, which in my experience would be MP4 for the smoothest playback. As for resolution I would try to stick to whatever resolution the original video is at for the best quality possible, although if the original is 1080p I find it's a bit hit and miss in terms of getting smooth playback (YMMV, of course). Anything else at 720p or less should be fine.

Not really. This shouldn't matter as long as the video is in the correct format.

[Q] Question before buying Gtab

Hi,
I am new to Android and I would like to get some help for a few questions before buying a Gtablet.
1) Flash support - I saw it's posted on the official website it has a temp version of flash player. Can I know if it works well? I need to watch high-def flash movies on different websites. I hope it can play smoothly. Also am I able to play facebook flash games?
2) RMVB/AVI/MKV support - I have tons of these kind of videos on my NAS server but the official site does not say they are supported. I heard there is a Rockplayer that can do it, but I went to their App Store and found no such software. Can i know a way to play these formats? If the hardware does not support them, and there is a software does, how is the quality and speed?
3) Local LAN share - I think I already googled there is one called EStrong, can I open my NAS file share folders, and play Video directly?
4) Customization - Can I install apps from anywhere instead of their app store? for example can i install Android Market? or install an app from a file?
That's pretty much what i concerns so far, other than that this is a great tablet!
I much appreciate your advices.
I can help with the first and fourth ones. This afternoon I watched an episode of outsourced on nbc.com. it wasnt perfect, but definatly viewable, and youtube videos all look fine for me. As for the last one, I have the android market installed, and I have also installed .apks that I have the file form so yea they do work.
re. 2, my son user rockplayer to watch some mkvs last weekend. I'm not that familiar w/anime, but he said it wasn't handling embedded softsubs. We did find another player on market that did but I don't remember the name.
re. 3, ES Explorer will copy files over lan (windows shares or ftp), but it's not for streaming.
Mkv support depends more on how it was encoded. I ripped some DVDs to mkv with 5.1 sound using handbrake and those will play in rockplayer using software decode fine.

I should clarify my earlier post. We were able to watch the MKVs (animes) he had downloaded fine with rockplayer. But they had softsubs, and it wasn't showing those.

Re. 1, my wife uses the Gtab to watch Kdramas, on sites that stream flash, and it works pretty well. Served from sites like tudou, qdisk, etc., and works ok, but a lot of those sites sometimes have heavy traffic, and even with a PC, they get jerky, so it's not the Gtab, but the stream server and traffic usually.

Works on news sites, tv.com, hulu, but thats with vegan 5.1. The stock rom ran flash "ok" but would crash some times.

According to the specs It will play:
32-bit LP-DDR2, DDR2
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Not all of those are working currently (some are and some aren't). Get yourself a good video encoder/dvd ripper for your computer and once they are encoded, you just drag and drop onto the gtab. If they are encoded properly with the proper settings, you get descent video quality.

Yes but you will need to do a couple updates using the developer instructions from here and then do a market fix. The easiest one is the simple performance pack update to the 3389 build with a market fix, however over 5,000 people have gone to vegan 5.1
http://vegantab.gojimi.com/
It is the best from what i can tell, wicked fast. It has two issues curently 1) Micro SD card management/file mgt 2) Keyboard auto correct. Updates seem to come out every 10 days to 2 weeks right now.
Thank you all!
Thanks a lot for your answers it helped me a lot!

Or maybe I should say, what's the best settings to use when converting my movies? And the best software someone can recommend?

why not just plug it up to the computer and copy the files to a Created "Movie" folder. your phone WILL play most formats already. i use dice player to play them and it makes them look really good. but you dont really need an app or anything.
im not sure what you mean by settings though. what are you trying to set up??

Ok cool, thanks. I just thought maybe there's certain settings (specs) to use to convert the movie files I have now to play on the SGS2 - kinda like "portable" specs so it won't take up too much space on the memory card.

i mean you can always change the formats to something that takes up less space. i think mp4's are pretty small.
OR you can buy an external sd card (32gig) and just put them there that way your not using the phones memory....but the phone has 16gig. are you trying to use your phone like an external drive of some sorts. most movies in avi format are around 700-900meg.

Can't get avi or mp4 to play!

Hi All. Just got the Note 10.1 and loving it so far.
However, for some reason, I can't get any avi or mp4 to play. These are files that play perfectly well on my Galaxy Tab 7", SGS2 and SGS3 but refuse to play on the Note. I've tried a few other players and they refuse to play the files as well.
Any thoughts, hints or tips?
Cheers
I had a similar issue with my optimus 2x files did not play only sound can try changing hardware accelaration settings. May be the way the video is encoded it is not compatible with note codecs
You clearly haven't tried BSplayer. It's like a real vlc for android!

Unfortunately, BS Player didn't work either! All I get is Blue notification box with a warning triangle saying
Cannot play video
Sorry this video cannot be played.
Forgot to mention that the Heli vid plays fine.
Also, I am Stock out of the box flavour of Android.
MX Player works for me. Anything I throw at it. If it doesn't, just change codec to software from hardware.
And there IS a VLC for android btw...
How are you transferring the videos to the device?

Copying files onto files on micro SD card and inserting it. Tried copying files onto internal SD but this didn't make any difference.

this is weird, my Note 10.1 plays anything I have and Im using the built in video player. Can you you PM me a description of a file of what you are trying to play so I can test it ?
Dont post a torrent link here.
Try turning off the force GPU rendering setting?

I just watched the movie you told me to try and everything is fine. I used the stock player btw.
Sounds like it might be a warranty job.... Most people I know had it up and running out of the box with no problems....
If this was a hardware issue we should see the videos playing using software acceleration in diceplayer, bs player and others. The fact that these videos wont play at all on this device suggest some soft of software / codec issue. You say they play fine on other Samsung devices, i'd try a full ROM reinstall first before doing anything else.
Even if this is a software problem it shouldn't be this much trouble to get your tablet working. I'd still take it back under warranty as the codecs should be preloaded...
You haven't mentioned if you have rooted or whether you are on a cooked ROM, if so taking it back as a first step might be more hassle. I'd still recommend a total factory wipe before taking it back.
If you can record video on your tablet and play it back it would suggest to me there is nothing wrong with the hardware which is why I believe a factory reset should resolve it.
Can you record and playback?
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I went back to basics and eliminated everything hardware wise that might have caused the problems. I then had the brainwave of sticking my micro SD card from my SG3 into the Note and lo and behold, I could play videos with no problems at all! So I re-formatted the card in my PC (originally I had formatted it in the Note) and stuck an AVI on the newly formatted card. This played perfectly
I hadn't thought it was the SD card as I could play MP3s from it with no problems at all, just wouldn't play videos.
Once again, many thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem.
:good:
I have a related problem.
I'm transferring MP4 videos from Windows 7 PC - Micro SD card in adaptor in the card slot on PC.
It will let me transfer about 5 and play them ok. Then it transfers the films, but gives the "Sorry cannot play this video" error message. When I look at the details of these none players, the resolution says 0x0 and the duration reads 00.00.
I have tried this on a Samsung 32gb disc formatted on the Note, and long format on a laptop running Vista. I've also tried a 16gb sd card. Same results every time.
Having read the thread, I tried recording video on the GN 10, it recorded and plays back ok.
Any suggestions would be welcome! I also hope this thread is still alive lol.

[Q]4.4.2 playing video from restricted profile

Just done a factory reset to clear the bugs but I have found a small problem with video playback using the stock player & a restricted profile.
My daughters video collections on the sd card, I can view and hover with playback but it will not let me click on the file unless I am in a full account. As soon as I create a restricted account it refuses to allow me to playback video. It works fine in MX player but try telling a 4 year old to use something new..
Is there anything I can do to get this working ?
Thanks.
Here's an idea

I'm sorry but I have no idea how to solve this, since I have no experience with restricted profiles. However, I have a solution if you are looking for a kids mode, which may or may not solve your issues.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiddoware.kidsplace&hl=en
That's a kid mode app that you can be password protected, you can either run it on your own account or perhaps integrate it as the launcher for your daughter's profile, I don't know if it will work that way but it is worth a try.
The reason I think this may work is because the developer also makes a video player that integrates with the app, and the description mentions it reads external storage. Due to the changes with Kitkat, I don't know if it still works perfectly (although from what I understand the changes with Kitkat were regarding write, so maybe reading the video files might still work), but it's worth a shot.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiddoware.kidsvideoplayer&hl=en
Hope it works!
Thanks, I already have MX player but she loves the preview the stock player has. I am backing up 60gb of vids to format the card as it has a wobbly even renaming folders while in her profile, I think that may be part of the issue so I will try the obvious 1st
oh well, this is a confirmed bug. formatted the sd card, stuck 1 video back on and still can't play it.

Video playback issues

Hello there!
I've been searching the forums (mainly this one) and wasn't able to find a proper answer, so here I go:
I am REALLY happy with this phablet, being the Mate 7 my 5tht android phone, but I've never had any video playback problems: When I try to play a 720p mp4 file, it freezes at 1:00 (5 seconds more or less) or it stops and the system shows a popup: "Cannot play this video".
I've tried MX Player (HW and SW decoding), VLC and VLC beta, stock video player and MoboPlayer. Every one of them behaves the same way.
Also tried lower resolution files, and 360p aren't a problem for them: It plays them flawlessly. Played them from SD card and internal storage.
Btw, Youtube plays 1080p videos without a problem, and I usually watch short Twitch.tv sessions at highest resolution.
I don't know what else I can do, and I am seriously thinking about returning the unit, since it's one of my main uses (and that's why I just LOVE this screen).
Any help is appreciated and, also, any question regarding this problem.
[EDIT]
Btw, I am on 5.1.1 with EMUI 3.1 (build B324), unrooted.
Have you tried a factory reset? This would mostly fix issued like this. I'm running the same version of Android on the mt7-tl10 gold version and have never had an issue with this. In fact I'm currently happily re-watching Star Wars episodes 1 to 6 in 720p.
It sounds like the videos are being corrupted (correct me if I'm wrong), because that's exactly what happens when I try to play a video which torrent hasn't finished downloading.
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.
Today I've discovered my SD card was having read issues, and even when I formatted it, it had issues with anything beyond 20MB, regardless being video or audio. Also, when i copied anything from the SD to the main memory, it kept having the same problems: mp3 suddenly stopped and videos couldn't be played.
So I extracted the SD, did a factory reset, and it looks like it's working flawlessly (fingers crossed).
So far, so good.

I'm glad I could be of some help!
I had the same issue with a previous device of mine, though the culprit had been a cheap and nasty MSD card I bought on vacation to squeeze extra photos in. I find that investing in proper storage (and taking the punch cost-wise) can go a long way, whether it be for your phone, PC, laptop or whatever.
Cheers! :highfive:
